We came in here today to possibly sign up my husband for benefits. He has a Vietnam veteran has hearing issues, etc. they were very nice to say downstairs. We met with a lady. We still have an appointment but we didn't know that because our friend suggested we just come down and then what happened was she filled out all the paperwork and stuff for us so that we were able to apply right away and not have to wait. You should hear something soon but she was just amazing. I believe her name was Liz, but she was just out of this world. She was in the VBA office in the basement, but that did not take away from her ability to do things and to get stuff moving in the right direction for him. Been feeling terrible past 5 days. Brother in law took me to the ER. The staff here are amazing. We both noticed something here that you don't see at St Anne's or Charlton. My SO comes here for both service related injury and regular health care. His service related care is covered at no cost. Things like prescriptions for non-service related needs are billed to his health insurance which have a copay and/or coinsurance. The VA does have a difficult time getting and keeping qualified physicians. He has been assigned a few PCP's over the years and he has requested a change in PCP in the past, which has been done for him. The staff here are pretty laid back in their patient facing interactions. Appointments often run behind schedule, so be sure to 'check-in' with the appropriate people and do ask questions. At our last appointment we had to 'take a number' which wasn't communicated in any way (phone call when making appointment, paperwork, a sign in department) so maybe ask for clarification (just sit down?) even when it doesn't appear clarification is needed. There are also a number of volunteers who can assist you or point you in the right direction. This facility has many on-site services such as lab, pharmacy, EKG, X-ray and so on. Other services are offered at satellite locations throughout the state. They have an urgent visit office on site, open during regular business hours. Outside regular business hours, if you need urgent treatment, call their after hours line to find out what facility is covered by the VA and located near you. We did this once while traveling in PA and were directed to Pittsburgh. As that was about as far away from us as home, we opted to cut our trip short and drive home to use the VA. Not always a convenient option, but if you use the in-network facilities you won't get an unexpected bill. Which is good to know. A new parking structure has been built near the hospital helping to relieve parking issues. The drive up entrance is handicapped accessible and there seem to be a few parking spots in this area as well. Just inside the entrance is a staffed information desk, If you need assistance or directions, stop here. The lobby is a sunny area with a few seats available if you are waiting for a patient or for a patient to wait while you get the car. Many patients are older and use walkers or canes. The halls can be a bit dark, but many are wide and signs overhead give an idea of which corridor will lead to your desired destination. There are vending machines around, usually near waiting areas and public restrooms scattered throughout. Last visit there was a little shop set up near a waiting area selling military related gear like hats. I have found that when a medical service is needed, they do try to provide good care in a timely fashion. Some appointments may not be available quickly due to limited resources, but in the past couple of years, as funding for our VA has increased, more services have become available and appointment times are quicker. Having several Veterans in the family, past and present, I feel taking care of our Vets is a societal, moral obligation and I appreciate that this facility and those working or volunteering here are trying to provide appropriate treatment for our injured and/or ageing military vets. Any medical care system can be frustrating to navigate, especially when resources are limited. Having patients and asking lots of questions in a calm manner can go a long way. Those volunteers, who use the VA themselves, are an excellent resource of information. Stop by the lobby and chat one up. They are there to help. read more

Had a medical issue other day and traveled to the ER for first time. The level of Care I received was outstanding. Even listening to other people receive Care through out the morning was astonishing. My situation required surgery immediate and over Night stay. You hear a lot about people complaining about VA Care, I've been using there Care for 5 years now and NEVER had an issue. The Providence VA is much improved from some of the other facilities I have been at. The staff are friendly and helpful. The layout of the site is good with the ER and Urgent care right at the front door. I have used both and have been well taken care of each time. Everything except Eye and Hearing are all there in one place. Eye and hearing are in their own separate facility down the street. I am satisfied with my primary care but I have been assigned to 6 different doctors in about 8 years because they come and leave so frequently but they have all been good. Pharmacy mails my meds right to my home and specialists are good and do not have a really long wait for an appointment. I am happy with the care given to me there. read more

VA healthcare is sort of like being a part of the mob. It takes care of you because it has to, but your options are limited, and those who are also part of it are stuck like you are. That said, the VA does provide services to veterans and their families that otherwise may not get the services that they needed. We first arrived at the VA during the process of compensation and pension exams for my husband with the military. They sent us to the main hospital as well as some subsequent satellite facilities including auditory, vision and so forth. At the main facility however, it's a much larger and expansive place. When you arrive, they have free valet parking which is very convenient. They also have self-parking, but it's very difficult to find, and very difficult to navigate. Once inside, they have a centralized check in, and then you're free to roam about. Our provider at the vision clinic was a student, but she was decently good. At the auditory clinic, they had drop in hours during our appointment, which made things very chaotic as you can imagine. The main facility however was where we went for blood tests, x-rays, and specialty care. Inside the VA they even have primary care next to an ER, providing basically wrap around services for any veteran within the system. I have been told however, that VA physicians are not required to licensure or contract at the same level as independent providers, that they are allowed to practice with less credentialing, which makes me feel weird. Overall, something is to be said about the convenience of having everyone in the same location, and the price, to most veterans it's free, which in and of its self is sometimes enough to sell someone on participating. I think that being able to go out into the community and pick your own provider is more optimal, however that's not usually an option, and this is the next best thing. read more

Blood draw is on point. This was my first time getting blood drawn at the VA and she got me the first time. This have never happened-civilian or corpsman always had to stick me at least two or three times. I'm pretty impressed, was in and out in ten minutes read more

The providence VA employs many many people( nurses, doctors, aids. Techs ) that have no compassion or the ability to even deal with veterans. I've been a patient since the 80's. This is all I've ever had for health care. I've seen them time and time again drop the ball on my own issues ( some very serious issues) They have me at some times,worried about even going there. Many times trying to tell them what's wrong with no real response or just dropping the ball mid stream. I think they suck. These people don't work because they care about veterans. They're just there for the money!! That is definitely not what we veterans need there. I find myself considering suicide because I'm so tired of the pain and suffering I go through 24 hour a day. I'm not posting this in and quick or haphazard or without plenty of thought. I'm posting it because of screw ups over and over again with my health care. My family, friends all see this in disbelief. Wondering how many veterans is this happening to. Don't know how much longer I can put up with this. I'm at the end of my rope. Believe me I've done everything I'm supposed to do. It's not me. ITS THEM! Va. A lot of people with jobs. Just nobody that gives a fuck! THEY SUCK AND THEIR DANGEROUS Doesn't anybody even think this is useful. GOOD LUCK ITS YOUR LIFE. I have had nothing, but horrible experiences here (with only ONE exception)! I'm not afraid to disclose that I have MH issues, but the level of unprofessionalism in this MH clinic is absurd. Ms Lusier (I hope I spelled it right) is NO DOCTOR! On our first appointment she made false accusations about saying that I'm abusive, violent, and disrespectful. NOTHING could be further from the truth. The Patient Advocate is horrible about returning phone calls even after promising a call back. The issues are still unresolved. George Malick (I hope I spelled that right too) is the person that's ultimately over the MH clinic and has stated he wants to sit down and talk about the issues with Ms Lusier, but has refused to actually meet for an appointment to discuss her behavior. He said he would call me back, but yet I've waited for weeks for his call....still nothing. The professionalism of the checkin staff of this clinic HAS gotten better over the past year, but still have improvements to make. Waiting 4-5 hours in the Emergency Room is absolutely ridiculous! I've hoped to have received medical services, but it seems to be a lost call. FYI, not that it matters really OUTSIDE the VA Hospital, but I'm a 100% Service-connected disabled veteran. read more

The receptionist at VS in Providenceis rude, abrupt, poorly trained, directional signage poor. Pulmonary good.Huge problem with Hyannis Clinic, they don,t take phone calls!, All calls go through VA Providence, then Get gets message with no phone number left on machine, I got another This morning, vet has to call Providence ask them to find out Who called vet???you wind up playing phone tag!!, There not that busy and should be required to take their patients calls. I just had my physical scheduled cancelled by a new Dr., after changing my plans , Had test and made arrangements, Hyannis good clinic, nice staff but should be able to be called Direct! Ever since I have been going there all has worked well. All staffers courteous, helpful get my stuff done on time, doctor is great listens cares. I know not all are happy with service but there are some who just want to be catered to and don't realize these people are just like us and don't try to choose one over another. On October 15th I brought my husband to the emergency room of the VA in Providence RI based on the recommendation of the nurse who promptly called me back. I explained my husband symptoms. Although my husband did not seemed in distress upon arrival it was obvious to me that something was terribly wrong with him. Had he seen a pcp they probably would have recommended him seeing a pulmonary specialist as he has asthma. Thank GOD we went to the ER. We had a doctor by the name of Dr. Chaffey. He ordered chest x-ray ekg and extensive blood work. I had told him that my husband oxygen levels went down on very little exersion. He did a d-dimer test. What should have had a level of 200 his was 3199. He followed it up with a cat scan which indicated my husband had blood clots in both lungs. Follow up testing show blood clots in left knee. Dr. Chaffey and the staff of the 5th floor of the VA thank you. In my opinion you saved his life. He is now doing very well and I credit all of you for that. read more

As a veteran who's healthcare is followed by the VA, everywhere I go I need to register at the local hospital. The hospital is around 6 stories, much smaller than my past hospitals. It's fairly close to my apartment, which is a plus. With the exception of the miami VA, I never had any concerns with cleanliness and customer service. From what I am told they are overhauling the whole consult system nationwide in order to see new patients quicker and more efficiently. The staff here is friendly and the wait time is decent, better than the bigger VA hospitals I've been to. I haven't tried the food.. I'm actually kinda scared it will take a star off. I guess I'll try it eventually and I'll let you guys know. read more

Up until now (Dec 2020) I would have given them a 5 star rating. I have been going once a year for an annual checkup. My last appointment was for last month. I called a week ahead of time to confirm my appointment, and it was confirmed by a person, and I was told I was expected. A couple days before my appointment, they called and told me my in-person appointment I had scheduled months earlier had been changed to my choice of a virtual appointment, or a phone call appointment with my new doctor. I declined, because I need blood work to find out if my meds are OK the way they are, need to be changed--or even dropped. How can they do that over the phone? I am also trying to get the 2 stage shot to prevent shingles. Also want to get a sugar testing device I need to attend a class for, as those classes were put on hold earlier this year due to covid. I am guessing it's because of covid--but that was not mentioned. I called a few days later after thinking about it, explained my situation to a live operator, and she was nice to me and took my information. She said she wou0ld forward my information to a medical co-ordinator, and have them call me for an in-person appointment. My call was returned later the same day, but all they wanted to do was to offer me the same virtual appointment or phone call appointment. I again requested the first available in-person appo0intment. The appointment they gave me is next Spring, 2021. I have been in quarantine since last March. I think veterans deserve to be told what's going on. I spent my last year of active duty on a base in Vietnam surrounded by mountains and a jungle while a lot of people in that jungle spent that year trying to kill everyone on that base. I am not sick, and I know how to be careful. How dangerous can in be to have me just come in for a blood sample and a couple of shots. I am fine talking to a doctor over the phone with that information, and getting my soon-to-expire meds to keep arriving in the mail. ER 'motto' - thank you for your service, now go 'F' yourself. I called and was told I could get 3 to 5 days of a necessary medicine until I could get to the pharmacy. I drove 45 minutes to be told 'sorry' we can't do that. We don't know who told you that, again we're sorry. The ER is absolutely a 'sorry' site within an otherwise pretty darn good VA hospital. read more

between the OIF/OEF coordinators, the ER, blood draw, and a specialty clinic, I've had nothing but great experiences here. Coming from an under-staffed and under-educated VA in a rural town, this has been a very beneficial experience.
