Our family member is a 19-year-old high performing athlete who has had daily headaches and post-concussion symptoms since October. After five months of neurologists finding nothing on standard MRI, we flew to CognitiveFX for the EPIC treatment week. The fNCI scan was genuinely illuminating -- the most objective picture of what was wrong that we'd had in five months. The treatment protocols were sophisticated and specifically mapped to her scan results. Her before and after scores moved dramatically. We believe something real happened this week. But here's what didn't happen. On day one I asked explicitly: by Friday we need an honest clinical assessment of when and if she can return to sports. That was the single most important ask. Friday's end-of-week review was conducted by a nurse and a trainer. No physician was available at any point during the entire treatment week. The doctor whose name is on her scans we have still never spoken to. In fact, we were told three of the four doctors listed at the clinic do not come in, and one wasn't coming in the entire week we were there. No doctors -- at all. We had to push hard just to get a Tuesday Zoom scheduled with the physician of record-- after the week was over and we were already on a plane home. There's more. CognitiveFX ordered a cervical spine MRI on day two of treatment. The radiologist found degenerative disc disease out of proportion with vertebral wedging from chronic axial loading. Nobody mentioned this to us during the week. We found out from a chiropractor we saw on the way to the airport Friday afternoon. CognitiveFX had that report for three days and said nothing. We also requested CognitiveFX's own return-to-sport specialist, who had committed to being part of the end-of-week process in a pre-treatment meeting be included in Friday's review. He wasn't there either. No one was but a thoughtful nurse. For what this week costs, the clinical consultation piece should not require a parent to fight for it after the fact. The diagnostic tool is real. The treatment protocols are real. The therapists and trainers were professional and clearly skilled. But a medically supervised program needs physicians who are actually present and accountable. That part was not delivered. I'll update this review based on how Tuesday's follow-up call goes.

The exhausting week and money was worth it for this amazing feeling. The one week, all day of hard work to help all areas of my brain function was incredible. Lunch was provided every day. The time to rest in between sessions was nice. It was so amazing to see I could do memory exercises at the end of the week that I was not able to do at the beginning of the week. When you get done you still have to continue with the exercises at home. Cognitive FX does provide you with a big binder of exercises. The MRI that was done before the week and at the end of the week were compared and there was a significant difference. Everyone who works here is so kind, patient, and understanding. It was so nice to meet other people who have been experiencing the same symptoms I have for so long. Not everyone understands how you feel but people at Cognitive FX do. This was a life changing experience.

A relative of mine is a current resident there and has been for several months. She is in chronic pain of her sciatic nerve and has so far basically been ignored. She has been to the nearby pain clinic one time with no plan to revisit or resolution for her pain. I have tried to speak to the Nursing Admin and always get voicemail. My calls are never returned. I have left messages for her doctor with the same result. As far as I know, there is no care plan in place for her discharge to an assisted living facility which is her desire and her goal. I live out of state so it is very hard for me to sit back and watch my relative be treated in such a manner. I am looking for another facility as I write this. Take my advice, do NOT let your family stay here. If there were a zero star rating, I would give it zero stars.

We had to pay a higher pay for the four days that I had to wait for people to come back from vacation so we can check out that was extremely unprofessional and enexcusible since it was Christmas week

Our family member was…read moreadmitted with a written prior diagnosis for a serious mental health disorder and was not seen by a psychiatrist for the first 50 days of his stay. We were told that the medical staff who are PRNs and therapists, not psychiatrists, did not "see signs" of moodiness and the family member was not reporting symptoms. It was only when the family contacted DHHS was the patient seen by a psychiatrist and prescribed his needed medication. Ironically, one of the reasons our family member developed substance abuse issues is because he had gone off his medication and was self medicating with drugs. So, if mental health issues are a concern, this is not the right place. Additionally, we had almost no support from his therapist. We went 3 weeks without return phone calls and contact with our family was limited to a specific date and time with zero flexibility. It felt like the family involvement was limited to family week which they heavily promote instead of 1:1 check-ins. For $800 per day it felt like a 12 step program in a nice facility. My advice is if you need to send your family member to Cirque Lodge, get the expectations in writing. Their website is purposely vague and for $800 per day it should not be unreasonable to expect weekly calls for updates and the patient to be seen by a medical professional if they have a pre-existing condition. I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be for families who suspect a mental health issue. I would also interview the therapist who will be working with your family member. Ours was awful. We also contacted Cirque Lodge with a formal complaint and request for refund for missed time with the right treatment plan. They declined our request. For our family, it's less about the money and it is more about the shocking lack of mental health awareness. As I asked one of the Cirque leaders "If a patient was admitted with a diagnosis of diabetes would you withhold their insulin until they had a blood sugar crash?" I don't know how it's any different. Fortunately, we have our family member in a better facility now and he is getting the treatment he needs. We are redoing the first 90 days which comes at great expense in both time and money. If you have similar circumstances, I hope our story helps you.

Thankfully I have an amazing support system and when I told them how I was feeling we decided I needed to get some help. I didn't know about Aspen grove, I was just led to it through luck really. From the moment i walked in I was treated with care and as an individual person. I didn't have much of an expectation being someone who has never gotten this kind of help and jail had been my only experience of being held somewhere. I just left an hour ago and as I reflect on my time there I'm amazed with the type of ppl I met there. Both patients and staff. I made life long friends and I didn't meet one staff member that wasn't an angel sent from God himself. They make it known they want the best for you by the effort and patience they treat each patient with. Not to mention the time they put in to getting to know everyone individually. (What works for one person won't necessarily work for the next) I didn't realize how down and out I was until this very moment as I reflect and they literally gave me the hope I needed to look within myself to how I can be a better person and why I should. And for anyone looking for help that smokes cigarettes, they let you smoke there which for me was a huge plus. 10 out of 10 stars. More like 20 out of 10 stars for how far above and beyond they go to help. If you need help, please do yourself a favor and go there. I promise on God you will not regret it. With much love, -Todd Simmons
