We had excellent service during the off season month with one server doing every table. To be able to sit on the patio, enjoy the lake, sunset and great food is a 5-star. Madeline Island is already quaint and intimate yet almost every patron makes small talk in a nice way. We met a cute poodle named Tommy on the patio and the owner allowed me to feed him some of my fabulous pork apple meal. There is a wide variety of food and cocktails. My husband and I split the Caesar salad with chicken (the chicken was not that great so I recommend omitting that) and then he had the pot pie and I had the apple pork with potatoes. Everything was flavored well and felt comforting. For dessert, we split the apple pie. The staff even warmed it up for us. Thank you!! read more

Madeline Island is already a treat in itself, but visiting this gem made it even better. The food was fantastic and the view speaks for itself. My group went with the Brussel sprout appetizer and then ordered our own dishes. I chose the linguine with white sauce and mussels. I couldn't have been more pleased. Service was great. If only the drive (and the ferry ride) from Madison was a bit shorter, I'd be back all the time. read more

We have visited many times and I will say this most recent visit was awesome! We were seated right away as walk-ins on a Saturday night so that was great! Our server was very sweet and attentive. I ordered the simply white fish with the champagne buerre sauce with wild rice and it was so delicious, just thinking about it as I write makes my mouth water it was so good! Hubs ordered the bistro Gorgonzola fettuccine- the steak was perfectly seasoned and tender his only comment was that he wished there were kore Gorgonzola chunks on top but he loved every bite! We also splurged for my birthday and got desert even though we were so full! Fudge brownie and ice cream and cheesecake- ughhh so good! That cheesecake just melts in your mouth. I have been coming to the Pub for years but this last trip up was sub-par. Usually, their mussels are so good, I come once a day to enjoy. This time, we came twice and they were just ok, and both times came out cold. It seems like something is amiss at the Pub, and I'm hoping it's just a bad summer season. We came twice for dinner because I usually love the pizza as well as the mussels. Both times we came the service was pretty mediocre. I will say that usually I recognize most of the crew year after year and this trip I only recognized one. Neither time did anyone come back to ask how we were doing and after we ordered it seemed like they just disappeared. Both times we had to flag someone down to get our bill and I actually had to ask for them to clear our plates when it was very clear we were done. Both times all food came out cold. Mussels, florentine, tenderloin tips, pizza, crab stuffed shrimp, whitefish....it was extremely disappointing. Bartenders were very loud and had hard rock music blasting inside (to be fair, this is usually the music choice I would enjoy, but not at this sort of establishment, especially when you've come for a nice dinner). Yes, it's a bit pricey, but everything on the island is. Normally I don't mind paying because the Pub's food is solid, but not this last trip. I'll be back, especially since it's the only place open in the winter, but I sure hope they get it together. The only reason I gave 3 stars was because of solid experiences over the last several years. read more

We dined here twice while on the Island. First night was a Monday night with 5 star food. The second night was 3 star food at best, and we had many of the same items including the steak and a Caesar salad. So I must conclude inconsistency in the kitchen. The outdoor patio and sunset views are unbelievable and perhaps worth 3 star food. However, be prepared for a pretty obnoxious group of other patrons and staff. It's a mess from that perspective. The first night was my birthday and the sunset was one of the longest and most dramatic I've ever seen. I will treasure that memory, but the second night did enough to make it unlikely I'd go back again unless it was the only thing opened. read more

Wow great place to eat. Right on the shores of Lake Superior. Great views of the lake. Adequate parking. Great food. OK service but they were busy. One of us had pepperoni pizza and the rest of us had lake trout with wild rice. A side of brussel sprouts. The slice of the pizza I had was great. Thin crust and just right. A beautiful but busy restaurant with something to please everyone in your group! I had the linguine with mussels, which came with a creamy garlicky sauce that is one of the best pasta sauces I've ever had. My mother had the mushroom and Swiss burger and a salad with vinaigrette which she really enjoyed. Then we shared a very generous portion of the bread pudding with berries. They also had a wonderful selection of "sober spirits" for people who plan on driving. We had a wonderful view of the lake and our server, David, was very nice. Update: we ended up coming back a second time! We had pizza plus the salad with blackened whitefish, followed by a slice of key lime pie from a local bakery. Everything was delicious, especially the pizza, which is made in an authentic pizza oven with a flame in it. Our server Marisa was also super kind and helpful. read more

Nice stop with a view for lunch, even in these miserable days of masks, patio only seating, and Covid. Super friendly staff with a small but decent menu. The wife really enjoyed her Ryder Estate chardonnay and my Earth Rider Caribou IPA was very good as well.. I had the Cheeseburger and the wife had the grilled chicken caprese sandwich... both were very flavorful and reasonably priced. The place is a little walk away from the ferry landing (just go right and walk), but it's totally worth it! We were two and wanted to sit outside (the inside seemed a little dark and we wanted to enjoy the beautiful day), but there wasn't any space available. The waitress kindly told us which table had just asked for the check, and added that she would have "reserve" it for us, and that in the meantime we could just sit at the bar and drink something. We tried their Blueberry Margarita: good, but nothing special. We waited just about 10 minutes before we sat. The view from the patio is quite good, a little beach and a glimpse of a port, but the patio is also near to a hotel's swimming pool, so it is a bit crowdy. The menu was interesting, not expensive, and the food we ordered was delicious! We had a salad, fish tacos and a dessert. I really liked everything! The presentation was also pretty nice (I will add a couple of pics), and as I said, I think it's worth it to do that walk! read more

Well this restaurant basically got our full business for a few days because there's nowhere else open to eat (or even grocery shop apparently) in late September on this Madeline Island. While I wish I could have tried more of the local restaurants, I have to say i'm overall quite pleased with this one. The first night we got a pepperoni pizza. It was pretty good and they give you Parmesan and red pepper flakes (my FAVORITE) with it. Winner for sure especially because I got super obliterated that night and couldn't keep my hands off of it. Anyway the next day we came back and ordered a veggie burger and shrimp linguine. The shrimp linguine was "quite good, big juicy shrimps" according to my partner who ordered it. The veggie burger tasted amazing, but the texture is why I couldn't do 5 stars. Like I said the flavor was there but it was more of a quinoa spread than a burger? I'm not mad just disappointed. Honestly it was still pretty good especially considering I could barely take a bite of anything with one of the worst hangovers of my life. And i'm also eternally grateful for this place because if it hadn't been open, I'd be stuck eating Funyuns for breakfast lunch and dinner for two days . Thanks Pub read more

Didn't stay for the food. The whole restaurant was empty and the hostess stated she had no room near the window. Then the next couple came in and were seated next to the window. The menu looks delicious and we will go back after the hostess is done with her shift. We went back and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the food with that spectacular view. It is worth it. Went with a party of 6,including two children, for dinner on a Saturday night. . I would add an extra star just for the view, but the food was just average. The server seem harried and a bit overwhelmed, but was kind enough to serve the children quickly while we were waiting for our steaks, burgers and pasta. I had the ribeye, nothing to write home about, but I added a side of Woodland Mushrooms and they were outstanding. Overall a decent place on an island with limited restaurant options. read more

We stayed at The Inn on Madeline Island for two days and the Pub is one of the only restaurants open for dinner on the island in the fall. I really liked the Pub, it was so warm and cozy, and it is nothing like your usually hotel restaurant or pub. The food here was fantastic, and very gourmet. We had dessert here one night and dinner the next. The have a variety of delish sounding entrees, but we decided to share a spicy sausage flatbread pizza. The crust was thin and crispy and there was just the right amount of sauce and cheese. I'd definitely recommend their flatbreads. For dessert we ordered their caramel apple cake with cream cheese frosting. This was a towering, two layer cake big enough for two to share. The cake was dense with just the right amount of spice and in between the cake layers was a layer of caramel apple filling. The cream cheese frosting was thick and dense and not too sweet. This cake was delicious. My only suggestion would be to add more apple filling. read more

After a day of boating around Madeline Island, our family stopped here for lunch since it's next door to the marina. We sat outside on the deck overlooking the bay so the view was nice and the weather was beautiful. My son had the whitefish sandwich that he said was delicious, perfectly sauteed with a lightly toasted breadcrumb topping with lettuce and tartar sauce. I had the pub mussels in a garlic white wine cream sauce served with crusty French bread. The mussels were either overcooked or previously frozen because they were tough and tasteless and were not tender and fresh. The best part was the fresh garlic cream sauce that could have benefited from more garlic but I gobbled it up with the bread. My wife had their burger on a GF bun and said the burger was good, but the GF bun was small and not very tasty or fresh. Our grandchildren had the usual chicken tenders that was a good value and portion size that they could not finish. To sum up, it's a hit & miss restaurant where some things are done well and other things need improvement. Maybe it was due to the end of season where lunch is no longer served after Labor Day. I wanted to give it 2 1/2 stars so I'll bump it up to 3 stars for the service, which was good since there were no other occupied tables. There's not a lot of choices for meals on this island and this may be the best of what was available on a Monday. read more

Summertime lunch al fresco overlooking Lake Superior - really doesn't get any better than that! Started with bloody Mary's and enjoyed the fresh caught whitefish sandwich. Delicate lightly breaded fish on ciabatta with homemade tartar and kettle chips. Great place to watch the boats coming into the marina along with kayakers and paddle boarders. Small beach to wade in with chairs and fire pit. Best part it's only a few blocks from the busy ferry landing and a world away in relaxation. read more

We dined at The Pub on 8/11/2015..Excellent food, nice view of the lake, very busy. My boyfriend was taking a bite of his steak and a fly had landed on it....the flies were terrible, and noticed other people were shooing them away as well. We mentioned this to our waitress Marcia, her reply "we are in the woods, there are flies everywhere", and walked away shaking her head. We stayed on the Island 2 nights, didn't have a problem with flies anywhere else, including patios, outside bar, hotel, or the beach. Will never go back due to the flies and our waitress. read more

Hello service!? Waited for 15 minutes for the hostess. No hostess showed. The dining room was empty. Walked into the bar where a few tables of people were eating but the bartender looked mad and refused to look up at us. Walked outside to a table and sat down. Saw at least two waitresses walk past us with angry faces. They did not seem friendly at all to the other customers. Waited patiently for someone to welcome us but got the stink eye again from both waitresses who were also pretending not to see us. Knew this was a very bad sign and got up and left hungry. I should also mention it had nothing to do with the time of day. It was 1:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday, the second week in July. Very disappointed. read more

The food was fabulous. The menu lead off with small plates. We ordered three between the two of us. Charcuterie platter had 4 great cheeses, grapes, 3 kinds of crackers and two sliced meats. The sauce on the plate of mussels was the best. The crab dip with flat bread "almost" had me licking the bowl. But I grabbed a spoon and got most of it. Barely had room for the raspberry bread pudding. We WILL be back. read more

We spend a lot of time on the island so we have been here many times and I'm sure we will go back again. The view is beautiful and the restaurant is fairly spacious so there usually isn't much of a wait for a table, though we often end up in the bar or on the dog-friendly patio. The food is always okay but rarely great - there always seems to be one thing that could just be better and I wish they would step it up a notch! Example - the caesar salad lettuce and croutons are good and lots of parmesan which I LOVE but it is always overdressed and could really be improved by addition of anchovies (at least in the dressing) and citrus (lemon!) as it is just too creamy and bland. The pork belly tacos were very tasty regarding the pork belly and the mango salsa was a nice add but there was hardly any salsa and too much coleslaw. My brother ordered a blue and bacon burger and they forgot the bacon, which he had to wait for them to bring out separately after an already LONG wait for lunch recently. Special pizzas are often good - like the thin crust, though the toppings sometimes aren't well-distributed. Would love to see improvement in the future to make it the go-to place - for now, happy it's not the only option! read more

Unfortunately, we left this restaurant feeling underwhelmed and a little ripped off. The menu was interesting but overpriced and the food itself was lackluster. There were, however, some very kid-friendly options for the under-tens in our party, which was nice. This restaurant is good for their view on the water. The service was not good and the food was mediocre, as well as, overpriced. I was most disappointed in the drink selection and service. The selection was pour and they were out of my preferred beers so they suggested something close and I thought I would give it a try. It was far from the beer I had asked for and I was very unsatisfied with the taste. After a poor suggestion, they refused to give me another beer. This is the first time I have heard of a restaurant refusing this. read more

We went the day after Labor Day and they were really ready for the tourists to be gone. We had to go to the kitchen and ask the cooks for a table. After a long complaint about reduced staff, she cleaned a table for us. We ordered drinks and the Artisan Bread Basket. She REFUSED to bring the bread until we ordered our whole meal. She wouldn't "turn in a partial order". Things went from bad to worse with her, she was so rude we got to the point of wondering if we could ask for a different server. Was looking forward to coming here, first saw it when driving around the island for the first time. Hadn't looked at reviews prior to coming and was excited to give it a try, curb appeal brought us in. Big mistake. First we walk in and go up to the front desk. The lady was not very accommodating and didn't speak good english, kind of hard to get your point across/understand. I asked for a table for five and was completely ok with waiting if we needed to. I asked if she needed a name to put down and she proceeded to walk away and help a different family. So she came back and took my name after I asked again and we had a 15 minute wait. Not bad and we spent the time in the backyard on the dock admiring the view. We then got seated shortly and waited about 10 minutes to meet our server. We watched her buzz around the restaurant and speak with other tables and we hadn't even gotten our drink order taken. She eventually got to us and shortly apologized for our wait, blaming it on how "busy" it was. She took our drink orders and was prompt with it. Then she took our food order. I personally work at a restaurant and I can guarantee we ALWAYS put the customer first. If the customer has a request we must follow it for many reasons but the most simple being, you don't want to lose future business and obviously you want to make people happy. For example, seniors order kids meals and ask for the senior discount, which I do not think is ok but I do it and with a smile. At this establishment, if you are over the age of 10, YOU WILL. NOT. Be served a kids meal. I do not need adult portions and I am a very picky eater so I do not enjoy most things on a regular menu. I wanted the mac and cheese off the kids menu which I did not think would be a problem and I was perfectly okay and prepared to pay a higher price than 4.99 for it. I just wanted some mac and cheese. But nope. The Pub did not want to fulfill my dreams. I asked for it and the waitress came back at me with "You look a little old to be ordering that." I was immediately uninterested and completely unsatisfied with the waitress and this entire place. The customer always always always comes first. If it weren't for the customer, how was an establishment make money? Charge me 15$ for a terrible evening and I will never come back. Charge me 5$ for a meal I will actually enjoy and I would be more than happy to come back and spend more which in the long run will bring more money in than that meek $15. It's simple math. And good customer service. But here, I guess that doesn't matter. So I begrudgingly order "Pizza Fries", which the menu did a terrible job explaining, and she was completely oblivious to my clear emotions of anger and disappointment. Food comes, it was mediocre. I would not order them (pizza "fries") again but if they were thrown in front of me for free, I would eat them. I would pay $3 for this $12 "appetizer." The $2.25 "Artisan Bread Basket" was the only true item we order that was true to its price and I would order that again hands down. Others with me enjoyed their food, I guess I was the whipping boy. In the end the waitress was good at small talk and nice-ish but wasn't nice enough to prompt me to return. Overall, service: 3/10 food: 5/10 atmosphere: 10/10 customer first: -15/10 price: 7/10 Overall: 4/10, I personally would not come back. read more
