Love, love, LOVE this place! So happy it's opened and been successful. It's a little on the pricey side, but not anything out of line, as everything on the island is usually at a premium. Cute little restaurant close to the ferry on Madeline Island. Seems like a local ewing type of place with a small menu that seems to change with the seasons. Thank ordered a GF "wild rice burger" and they knew enough about their gluten practices that they knew to tell me the fries were in a shared fryer. They put it on a GF bread also. When I got my "burger" it seemed like it was just shredded beets mashed together in a patty shape. I don't like beets, but it was actually quite good. The aoili sauce that was with it really brought out a delicious seasoned flavor. I actually asked about for more sauce to eat with the beets that spilled out of the sandwich and she told me that it was wild rice mixed with the beets. The menu just wasn't very clear at all (I thought it would be ground beef mixed with wild rice! ha!) My kids split a waffle which they said was delicious, the bacon was tasty and thick, and the fried rice had really good good flavor with a good mix of texture (husband and kids both really loved it.) One thing : it was an order at the counter type place and they charged us the tip when we paid for the email upfront. Kind of weird but maybe something you have to do to get staff to work on an island in this kind of workforce. Total meal price was $64 for three plates and two coffees. I've eaten breakfast here several times during our annual Labor day weekend jaunts to Madeline, and always loved it. Yesterday I finally got to try it for lunch, and it was, not surprisingly, a great meal. I tried the Korean BBQ Sandwich with a side salad ($13 for sandwich, $1.50 for the salad). A bit pricey, but oh well. Keep in mind that they automatically add 18% to all checks. That's what I typically tip, so the amount is fine. But it really irks me when restaurants do that for a party of one!!! So that tip thing is my only negative. Just consider that part of the deal, and relax and enjoy yummy food, a quirky, artsy, fun environment, and a lovely view of Lake Superior! My sandwich came on some yummy crunchy bread (I think they do all their own baking but I am not sure). The delicious sauce made it soft inside pretty quickly -- maybe grill both sides next time? No real problem, though, as the roasted chicken was tender and flavorful, and the house kimchi was just tangy and spicy enough to satisfy a spic-lover like myself, but not so much that wimpier (sorry) fans couldn't handle it. The greens were fresh and colorful, with a superb vinaigrette. I didn't eat breakfast this trip, but in the past I have LOVED the savory waffle, and my daughter always gets the farmers breakfast. This place has a liquor license and a sense of humor! Got my Americano in a big mason jar- love that! The clerks were very friendly. Ordering from a clerk before being seated is tough for me to figure out, but it seems commonplace on Madeline Island. I loved the whitefish toast! The poached eggs were perfectly poached. I just wished there were bigger chunks of the whitefish in the spread. Micro greens added texture and smiles. Someone else in the group got the hash, and they loved it. If you want a good meal on Madeline island this is your only option. I mean a well thought out, full of flavor and unique meal. Not just food that is a filler. We got the hash hash, savory waffle and the farmers scramble. Everyone loved their meals. The savory waffle was really good. Heaven on Madeline Island!!! Farmhouse is my new favorite spot! Cozy , warm environment that does remind me of a farmhouse kitchen. Braided rag rugs are barstool covers and polished natural wood bar. A well trained young staff and a great soundtrack give the place a hip a slightly urban casual vibe! Shout out to Soma for a fab cappuccino and being the first server ever to suggest adding a bit of coffee to my cup to allow me to enjoy the last of the foam! Love that!!! The superstar of the day was the Savory Waffle!!! Do not miss it! Served with an easy egg and lightly dressed greens it is truly amazing! I can't believe all of these years that I have been at the island and I have not dined here for some farm fresh food! You order at the counter and then you are seated to wait for your food. I ordered a pomosa (oh you don't know what that is? I didn't either, a pomegranate mimosa!) Comes in a huge glass, it was quite delicious. Now my meal sounds basic but it was far from - eggs toast bacon and sautéed root vegetables, oh my gosh if those veggies weren't cooked perfectly I don't know what was, the bread was great (not sure what kind it was) but I was so full and even more satisfied with how good it was. The hubs ordered the fried chicken sandwich he said it tasted good (I didn't want a bite this time because my breakfast was too good ha) the only thing he said was he was surprised the chicken sandwich was dark meat when typically they use breast for sandwiches. We stopped here for our first breakfast on Madeline Island and we were not disappointed! So cute, cozy and - best of all - delicious! Food: Really good. We had the pesto eggs and it was life changing. Try those. Service: Prompt and straight-forward. It's a small place, so they obviously don't miss people as they come/go, but I appreciated the friendliness of the staff. Atmosphere: Unique. Very quaint and cozy. We sat at a small table in the middle of the restaurant. Even though the restaurant is small, it still felt intimate. Strongly recommend checking this place out! Full disclosure, we went in the fall. We met some friends here for breakfast and had no information prior to sitting down to eat. This place rocks! It's expensive but that's the Island Life! Both lover and I got the Farmers Breakfast- basted eggs, his with bacon, mine with braised beef. Both were excellent choices. If I made it at home I would add gravy but it was good without it. In my house if gravy can go on it, it will. The sourdough bread was impressively awesome, and that homemade jam.. mmmm yes M'AM. These beautiful donuts were sitting there on a plate whispering to me "look here, it's your secret lover, Donut... here to seduce you." It was a peanut butter and jelly donut! Peanut butter frosting and an apple jam type filling. So good, made me wonder what raspberry would be like.... A girl has to have dreams. The donut obsession continues. The cold press coffee is just right. The "Pomosa", pomegranate mimosa was oh so tempting. But a mimosa so soon after my last incident was just returning to the scene of the crime too soon. But if you haven't recently worn out your welcome with mimosas try the Pomosa, lord knows I would. This joint is full of so many cool unique aspects. I was forlorn over the crochet hot dog on display. How I don't have one of those in my life yet is just criminal. The table markers are stuffed fruits and veggies. Outdoor seating rocks, indoor seating looked nice. Ambiance is a little funky and oh so Madeline. The sweet and savory waffle option was begging me. Farmhouse was such a great surprise when visiting Madeline Island. It's just to the left on the main road after you get off the ferry. They offer meat, vegan and vegetarian options, with a great selection of beverages. I'm not usually one for imitation meats, but the mock duck rueben with housemade kimchi was delicious (Kimchi Rachel). Paired with a Bent Paddle Hop, of course. We also tried the Foraged Mushroom Grilled Cheese, a triple-decker sandwich with cheddar cheese, pesto and wild mushrooms. A big bite that packs a punch. They feature seasonal, local, high quality ingredients and it is obvious in every bite. From the food to the atmosphere to the service, we loved this place and we will definitely go back! read more

All the locals told us The Farmhouse was the best place to eat on Madeline Island. Lucky for us we were staying right next door at the Island Inn. Decor is so cute. Place settings are rolled up in bandanas. Specials of the day are written in a blackboard wall. I had the Sweet Waffle and eggs. The waffle is Belgian style with granola baked in, topped with real whipped cream and blueberries and served with local maple syrup. My friends both had the Savory Waffle with gouda, spinach chives baked in served with an over medium egg and sausage. Everything was excellent! read more

Probably the best fried fish sandwich I've ever had, and I've had a lot fish sandwiches at a lot of different places. So, then why only 3 stars? Good taste and food quality only carries one so far. There's also service. First, they were out many menu items. The menu was written in chalk and could have easily been updated. Second, the person taking the order was rude. They were unapologetic for the missing menu items and tossed (not placed, but actually thrown) certain items (like my credit card) on the counter rather than handing them back to me. Third, an 18% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. I don't mind that so much for large parties, but there were only 2 of us. We ordered 2 sandwiches, a donut, and a lemonade and the total bill was $41. That's not a large order. Also, since the service was poor, I wasn't keen on leaving a full 18% tip. I had the veggie sloppy joe with bacon and an egg. It was fantastic. My wife had the Rachel (turkey and Kimchi). Good spice but the turkey was excessive dry. The food was a solid 4 (at least mine, hers was definitely lower), service 3, and the wait (45 minutes for two sandwiches and fries) was definitely a 2. Not a bad spot, not great. The food was pretty good, but didn't quite justify the cost. They are doing well with the classic Seattle-like hipster vibe and are all very friendly and food was farm to table fresh. However, my biggest issue is the high cost of any option added to the meal along with an 18% automatic gratuity for counter service and self-serve coffee. The Farmhouse is a good concept with good potential, but it has not yet achieved a level of food and service commensurate with what their target market expects. My wife and I have become breakfast connoisseurs in the Minneapolis-St Paul area, and larger metro areas when we travel. We know what makes a great breakfast or brunch, and have reasonable standards--we don't demand perfection. I just wish I could like the place more, but cannot give it more than three stars based on today's experience. (Details below.) Our party of four arrived at 8:30 on a Sunday morning, when there were still plenty of tables available inside. Unfortunately, there were only two servers working and just getting our coffee took ten minutes. This trend continued for the remainder of our meal, with us waiting at least 40 minutes for our food once we had ordered. I needed to raise my hand when we were finished and wanted to pay, because we received so little attention that we could have easily been there another 20-30 minutes without taking action. Sometimes the wait is worth it when the food is incredible, but the food--the main purpose of the establishment--was underwhelming. We ordered the brunch special: a plate of heart-shaped cinnamon doughnuts. It's unclear why they were so dry and stiff, or why there was no cinnamon or sugar on them, but they were just dry and tasteless, and went uneaten after one bite from each of us. I would prefer to spend my calories on food I enjoy. When the food finally arrived, it looked okay, but was only slightly warm--certainly not hot. We got the hash and the sweet waffle. For the hash they were unable to poach the eggs, so we received basted eggs, the yolks of which were half cooked and didn't really ooze out to mix with the hash. And the waffle was dry and tough, requiring significant force to cut with my fork. See the video of me trying to cut my waffle. Giving this review does not please me. I really want this place to do well; Madeline Island has long needed some newer restaurants and the Farmhouse is certainly a step in the right direction. I suspect that more than anything they just need more staff--more servers and more cooks would go a long way toward speeding up the service and ensuring hot and fresh meals. Presumably the doughnuts and waffles are better when they are fresh, but more staff would also allow them to pay attention to the details (like sugaring the doughnuts), which are really what make or break a restaurant experience. I hope Farmhouse is able to turn these things around in the near future. I would love to love this place, but it seems like it still needs some significant TLC. read more

My first complaint is the 18% gratuity automatically added to you bill even though it's not a full service restaurant. You place your order at the counter and when you need a refill on your coffee, it's up to you to walk to the counter and refill it yourself. Out breakfast for two came to about $40 which is a bit spendy. While some may call the restaurant quaint, I found it more worn due to neglect. It didn't feel that clean and and is in need of some TLC. When my scrambled eggs, hash browns and toast arrived, both the eggs and browns had a slight gray tinge to them. From my earlier years working in a kitchen, I recognized this was from a griddle that was in need of cleaning. The toast was served without jelly and had to make my way to the counter to obtain and the final straw was when my latte was set on the table, the server had the dirtiest nails. This was about the worst place I have ever dined at and would recommend you dine else where. GAK!! read more

Hands down THE best breakfast and lunch place on the island! They serve Big Water coffee offering a delicious start to your meal. My favorite food items: Hash Hash (yummy hash with root veggies topped with an egg), savory waffle (my 10 year old son who's actually quite picky with food gobbles it up) and their sweet waffle is wonderful with little chunks of granola inside and fresh fruit compote. Locally sourced foods and unique offerings you cant get anywhere else on the island. Go here and sit back, relax, and enjoy the amazing view of the lake. We had a Father's Day brunch and my husband ordered the Fat Mac (Farmhouse version of a Big Mac) with bacon added and it was SO good! You just can't go wrong here! read more

Really disappointed in the service and lack of attention to an obvious mistake with our order. Took over 50 min to get our food, we checked at 40 min and they said it was still coming when the people who ordered before and after us were done eating already. Food came out wrong, little effort to fix that. We ate then left. Really bummed they couldn't acknowledge their errors. We were recently here for brunch and left so happy! My husband and I had been in on the off-season and were a bit disappointed by a very dry waffle and overall mediocre experience but they have really figured it out now! Love the counter ordering set up that gives it a more casual vibe. The patio is nice and big and blissfully bug-free when we were there. I had the savory waffle which was one of the priciest items on the menu but worth every penny! Huge serving with delicious sausage, nice salad, and tons of tasty savory waffle with an egg on top. Ate way too much but couldn't stop! Also enjoyed the hibiscus kombucha on tap (they also have another flavor on tap) and they seemed to have lots of other beverage options and coffee that you could also get to go (great to have on the island!). Hello Madeline Island! This is the place to go if you want good farm-to-table food in the middle of a lake. Great service, cozy warm atmosphere with farm-like tables, windows, books and a chalkboard with specials. Limited food options but really good options. They even have veggie sausage! I ordered the creamed (almond milk) greens with tomatoes on toast, with potatoes. It was delicious! Maybe a little heavy on the bread (I didn't eat it all) and a little light on the greens, but I still enjoyed the vegan options and the ambience. We met our family here for a late lunch after biking all around the island. We sat out on the patio under the shade. We were hungry and the Farmhouse was a great place to fill our tummies. Scott had the eggs and hash which was a ton of deliciousness on a plate. Aunt Linda and I got the last two savory waffles and I'm so glad we did. It was one of those meals that you still keep eating even through you're full because it's soooo good. They also had a good selection of beer, wine and craft sodas to quench your thirst. We were very excited to eat here before we even got to the island. We were "greeted" at the door with an impatient girl rolling her eyes at us and asking us rudely every two seconds what we wanted. When we did order we found a seat and watched as everyone around us was given fresh water. We asked for some but was never given any. Why were we forced to pay an almost 7 dollar gratuity up front when we had NO service. We were never asked how our meal was, yet several other groups were. I even had the pleasure of the young girl working there, roll her eyes at me when she asked if we wanted jam and I said yes. Frankly it was way overpriced for what we had for a breakfast. We frequent Madeline, but we will not eat here ever again. read more

(This is cut and pasted from my TripAdvisor review, as I wanted to make sure the restaurant might see it.) Totally passable, OK food. That being said, nothing to write home about, and nothing one couldn't easily make at home, for that matter, but I believe the menu rotates, so perhaps it was just a little uninspired today. Prices certainly seemed a bit inflated for small-town northwestern WI ($7 for a cup of soup) but I suppose inflated prices are to be expected in touristy La Pointe (most of the products had to make the ferry over), and I see the restaurant seems to tout the fact that they use local and/or organic ingredients, so there's another contributing factor. The $7 soup was admittedly pretty good, some of the breakfast potatoes a bit undercooked, reportedly the scrambled eggs were a little overdone and no butter came with any of the bread/toast; the waiter seemed a bit rushed and we were rushed ourselves, needing to make the 1 pm ferry so we didn't even bother to ask for butter (our own fault). The wait times were quite long, even for a cup of coffee, but the staff seemed to be running a little short on help (I did notice the "help wanted" sign out front), I saw one cook in the back, so maybe it just wasn't their best work today. I'm not itching to go back, but if I do, I would love to see a more interesting menu, and a little more attention to detail. Using locally sourced products is great, but if you're charging $7 for a cup of soup in rural northern WI, you had a better make sure it's good and presented well. Oh, and maybe drop the "Blue Sky" soda for something a little more mainstream, or if we have to be committed to using more obscure products, how about something like Sprechers? read more
