I recently won a storage unit auction at this Hillside Public Storage. Once I won I realized I was going to need more time to clean it out so I decided to rent a space at the unit. I have rented many storage spaces in my time but I did not expect the customer service that I received at this branch. From the first day I spoke with Angie she was very polite and very helpful. The day I won I had to get to the storage unit before they shut. I had some issues with my car on the way there and I did not think I was going to make it, but I spoke with Angie, explained the situation and said I would get there as soon as possible. All she asked was that I call and keep in touch if she knew when I was coming. I did throughout the trip I ended up being 15 minutes late they should have already shot but Angie stayed helped me get everything set up to go and the extra time needed to show me my unit and make sure I had everything I needed. She could have just left even though I made the long drive but she didn't. I've been renting storage units for about 30 years and I've never had someone go so far out of their way to help. Usually I receive a lot of attitude or they won't help in any situations. So this was very unexpected. As I started to unload this unit, it was extremely loaded with everything and anything. I never seen such a mess. Couple days in I realized I was not going to be done in time so I figured I'd go talk to Angie. Before I could get to the office she came to me and she told me, before I even asked that it would be okay if it took me a few extra days to get it cleaned and that she would work with me as long as I kept in touch with her. As we continued to clean for the next couple days we kept in touch and every time she was very helpful and extended my time. One of the days I drove all the way there (40 minute drive), got to the jnit door and it was locked and I thought, "Oh my time is up," but Angie went and unlock the unit and worked it out with me to be able to take over the unit for the month so that I could finish getting everything out. She worked it out so that I could have that unit specifically at a good price. Unlike others who would have given up and said there was nothing they could do. She went out of her way, research what she needed to do and made sure she was able to fix it for me. Her only major concern was helping me as a customer to make sure that I had everything I needed. That's what you want in customer service as a customer and that's what you want working for you to represent you as an employer. At one point, she even wished that she could help me move as she felt bad for me. Unfortunately, she could not. She continued to check in every day making sure I had everything I needed. She's such a pleasant, caring person, very knowledgeable in her position to be able to allow me to take over that unit. I've asked storage places before if it's possible that I just take over the unit that I bought. They just said it was not possible, that there's nothing else they could do for me, but it seems there was something that could be done and Angie did do it. Angie didn't even question it, she knew exactly what to do. Angie saved me so much time, money and effort in moving everything around and making it work. Thanks to her I was able to get everything fixed without being pressured to close the unit before I was done cleaning it and lose everything I had just won. If I had a business where I could employ her, I would truly love having an employee like her. I hope Public Storage appreciates having someone that has the knowledge, compassion and work ethic as she does. read more

I had a rodent problem. I paid for insurance and was only offered $150.00. The rodents came through the floor. I have photos to prove it. It was at the hillside, nj location. My furniture had so much rodent feces and dead rodents in my unit. Do not pay for insurance. It's a waste of money. read more

I am highly disgusted!! I paid over $350 over each month for this storage unit. Over 30 bags of clothes were in this unit 3 piece couch set, two bedroom set, my wedding dress, my daughters sweet sixteen dress, my daughters prom dress so on and so forth. All of these things were covered in rat droppings. I had such good and memorable clothes that went to waste. After all of these things I placed in storage, I only left out two bags and one bin. I am hurt and so disappointed. Never again public storage unit!!! read more

Staff does try but you are rarely able to get a cart at this location, something NECESSARY and promised. Monthly pricing varies without warning, so be sure to check your billing. A 20% increase, when I am not getting the access I have paid for due to lack of carts, AND there is no improvement, is not acceptable. They wouldn't let me give ZERO !!!!!! This place is HORRIBLE! I had numerous items stolen from this place. BEWARE!!!! I am soo disgusted because nothing was done. I spoke with the company, police,, manangement. I had insurance on the unit but they didn't cover my STOLEN items because the unit "did not appear to be tampered with"........I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU CALL IT WHEN THE ITEMS YOU PLACED IN THE UNIT IS NOT IN THE UNIT WHEN YOU RETURN!!!!! I left my things is storage for approximately 6 weeks and in that time frame more than $10,000 worth of my belongings were stolen......every coat, jacket, blazer I owned, clothes, children's clothes, BRAND NEW 50" TV (new in box, purchased for my new home), BRAND NEW PRINTER (purchased at Black Friday sale). A suitcase full of clothing...... I am still in shock, that is such a lost. I truly don't understand people! I am a single mother with 3 children starting over again after a failed relationship and it took me months to get myself together to finally start over again and my belongings were stolen. I am sure it was an inside job! There is no way my unit was entered, only certain things were stolen and closed back!!!! I pray that the person/people responsible are caught! I am going to leave judgement for the Lord........ I truly hope no one has to experience the disappointment and shock that I am currently experiencing. I had no idea that placing items into storage was a "at your own risk". I thought I was making a good decision to put the things in storage.......I never thought I would be a victim!!!! ROACHES, ROACHES ROACHES. I recently vacated the public storage in Hillside NJ and when I went to get my stuff, the movers discovered over 200 roaches in my unit. My stuff was there for less there for just over 30 days and became infested with roaches. I have been told multiple times that the property manager and district manager will call me back with no response or help. I have had to come out of pocket hundreds of dollars to get exterminators along with it delayed my move by hours (billed at $200 an/hour). We had to get roach bombs and bomb everything in the truck to get my stuff out of the unit and hopefully not bring roaches into our brand new house (unsuccessful). Since no one local was getting back to me, I tried calling corporate to get this resolved without bringing online in which I was told "too bad. You signed a contract that you store at your own risk." All I am asking for is a refund on my money to help me cover these unexpected upfront costs that I have had to come out of pocket for. The only assistance I can get is being told to call a "we care" phone number. This does not seem like a company that cares. read more

DEPLORABLE! MOUSE/ RAT INFESTATION. STAY AWAY!!! In short, anywhere is better than this. It was DISGUSTING. EVERYTHING that could go wrong did and the staff was no help at all. There were mouse and rat droppings along with used wipes and cigarets in the unit I was supposed to be renting...everything except the lock I purchased. When I refused to utilize the storage due to the conditions, I was told I couldn't be refunded so I'm expected to pay for a unit unsuitable and very unsanitary especially during a time like this for anyone's furniture. The staff responded as if my request was unreasonable. After driving 4 hrs to my out of state, was just ridiculous. Very unhappy. read more

I got items stolen from this Public Storage location. My lock WAS NOT damaged, cut or broken. Everything started when I received an email from them that my lock was improper closed. Next day I stop by and everything was closed, the locked was properly closed and not broken. Next thing was after Summer time, I went to get some things at the storage space and I have over 5 items missing, someone stole them. I lost over $1,500 on belongings and they did not do absolutely anything. Police report was made and the Insurance never does anything, they only tell you that you must have receipts and proof of ownership of items. How are you going supposed to have receipts of over 7 years old items? Really? But they don't tell you the day you rent. At the day of the claim, they only tell you that cameras were not working and only record for 2 weeks... Are you serious?? There are thieves at that location. Police department will not even care, they only do the report for you. In conclusion, this means that someone internally has a Master Key to all room spaces. I will never recommend this company to anyone. Your items will be out there unsecured. read more

I have mixed reviews of this Public Storage in Hillside. I made reservations for my unit online. The next day, a person called me to confirm all the information. He was very professional and I was confident in knowing that all the details were handled. The day before I was supposed to start my rental, Public Storage called me again and double checked my appointment time for Sunday, May 12. I flew from California on the 11th, with the intent of moving my daughter out of her college dorm on the 12th. I showed up at my appointment time to see the unit and start my rental. However, I was told by Sean at the desk that there wasn't a unit available for me. Keep in my mind that I already had a reservation and this information had been confirmed TWICE. I will give Sean credit for being understanding and to be frank, it wasn't his fault. He was a nice young man and very courteous. However, Sean let me know that the reservation was just for locking in the price and wasn't a reservation for the unit. What? Then why did I have a confirmed appointment time for a unit that didn't exist? I blame the management and/or Public Storage policy for this mix-up. I only had one day to move my daughter out of her dorm and get on a flight back to California, and now I had to find another storage unit that was open on Mother's Day. Fortunately, Sean's professionalism was evident because he located another storage facility for me and arranged the reservation for me. So, I am very angry that I had to go through this at the Hillside location, but I'm also glad that they hired a competent and professional person like Sean. I picked this particular location because of the Yelp reviews. Hopefully if you plan on renting here, you will know to ask them if you are reserving a particular price or if they really have a place to put your belongings. Facilities are average but secure...I didn't see any bug infestations or rat droppings and they seem to keep it clean... I rented from here awhile ago and I'm surprised I did not leave a review. This place is a rip off as well as having employees who are thieves. I had my storage there for two years without a problem, then as soon as I was going to move my things out, lo and behold someone ransacked my storage unit and stole all my electronics out my unit. I had fell two months behind, so they broke my lock and put their lock on, Right before auction, I paid my balance in full and was ready to move into my apartment. What a great surprise to see when you are expecting all your things to be in one place. The police were called and the detective on my case even stated that they were some shady business going on here. My storage unit was just off the main ramp but the cameras were not working properly. Did I also mention that there was no signs of forced entry on my unit? No one even contacted me from the company to offer me any sympathy or anything. It was my fault for letting my payments lapse but when you put your companies lock on the storage unit, you take full responsibility of those items. BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! read more
