I grew up in New Jersey in a house with a full basement and attic that made storage felt endless. Then I moved to Florida, where storage space is practically nonexistent. I quickly realized that many people rely on storage companies for everything from holiday decorations and inherited furniture to all the things they simply cannot part with. That is where Public Storage comes in. It is the largest self-storage provider in the world. Fun fact: the very first Public Storage opened in El Cajon, California, in 1972, and its first customer was an STP Motor Oil distributor who needed a place to store cans out of his driveway. You probably recognize the company by its signature orange doors, intentionally designed to catch the attention of highway drivers. Today, Public Storage operates more than 5,000 facilities nationwide, with a few policies renters quickly learn. For example, they do not prorate monthly rent, so it is best to move out before your billing date. Like many storage companies, they attract customers with impressive move-in specials. But once your belongings are settled in and the convenience sets in, the monthly rates can rise dramatically. To be fair, they are upfront about the pricing structure, but realistically, no one moves into storage unit for only a month. We ended up at the Oakland Park Public Storage when we had to quickly liquidate a large business and needed space to sort, organize, and store inventory. At one point, we rented multiple units across different cities, but now we are down to a single unit here. Security is decent, with two gated entrances before you can access the property. Once inside, the place feels enormous. The facility stretches alongside the train tracks, so the sound of freight trains rushing by become part of the background noise. Along with household belongings, people store boats, trailers, and work trucks. At night the environment feels less safe. There are often sketchy people lingering around the property. I never feel comfortable leaving the car unlocked or unattended. Vehicles occasionally slow down as if sizing up both you and your belongings. I never saw anyone living inside a unit, but some unhoused people use the facility to store what they own. One elderly man regularly sorts through his possessions in the late afternoon before heading back out on foot for the night. Most interactions with Public Storage happen online these days, but the one time I went into the office, the employees were surprisingly kind. They even gave me an ice pack from the first aid kit when I needed one. There is also a large RaceTrac gas station directly across the street, which makes it convenient to grab drinks, snacks, or fuel while loading and unloading. If you need extra space, Public Storage will do the job. Like most storage facilities, it is equal parts convenience, necessity, and the emotional challenge of figuring out what to hold onto. read more

I am extremely disappointed with Public Storage's customer service. Since March 29, I have been trying to merge two accounts and have gotten nowhere. I have made multiple trips to the local office, only to be told they couldn't help. I then called corporate, waited on hold, and was told that the local office had to complete the merge--exactly the opposite of what the office had been telling me. For over two months, I have been stuck in a cycle of being passed back and forth between the office and corporate with no resolution. No one seems willing or able to take ownership of the issue. To be fair, the lady at the local office was very nice when I spoke with her on the phone. However, being friendly does not solve the problem. I still have to use two separate logins just to manage and view my two storage units, which is completely unnecessary and a waste of time. In 2026, there is no reason customers should have to deal with something this basic. Public Storage needs to come out of the dark ages and modernize its systems. To make matters worse, Public Storage has raised my rates three times within a single year. Paying more while receiving this level of customer service and outdated technology is unacceptable. At this point, I will be moving both of my storage units to another company. I will be actively looking at other storage providers within the next month. I expect better communication, accountability, and customer service from a company of this size. read more

I appreciated the person who checked us in. She also offered us to even show us the unit. The unit was also clean and very well maintained. I can only speak as to the check-in process, since we only recently got a storage unit here. The check-in process online was seamless, and the staff at the front desk were very helpful with our reservation and explaining how everything works. I will say it was a little confusing trying to find the storage unit at first because the confirmation email said "Building E," but as far as I could see, there is no Building E. But the helpful front office staff was able to direct us to the correct building. Our unit was clean and had a lock already for us to use inside, and the temperature inside seemed appropriate. read more

what I have experienced is the staff being entirely rude and very mean behaviors towards me. Involving very personal things I had no idea about even in my own personal life and it is hard for me to get in and out of my storage unit. Yes employees working at this storage place have caused a stir at the facility making it hard for everyone that came to load or unpacking for storage to even do what they came to do. They also had people that were not working one time be mean to me when they came in to do last rounds like sweeping and cleaning that didn't even work for public storage. he didn't wear a uniform and went with one of the facilities employees. Started June 1 and within two months my rent went up almost 50%. Felt like a bait and switch with their intro pricing, knowing that I wasn't going to move by belongings again so quickly. The unit itself was fine, but not a good value for the price. read more

In less then a year having a unit here the price has tripled. You used to at least get a year contract with public storage not anymore, a month after getting the unit they started raising my rates. I tried to switch into a cheaper unit a few months ago and they gave me a unit with so many large holes in the wall I could reach right into the unit next door. Management refused to give me a different unit so here I am still paying for the more expensive one. They claimed they have no other available, their website shows plenty of open units. I will never rent here again! I got screwed with their rental period, and they call incessantly about nothing but fail to call back when they know I'm gonna file a complaint. Try to call the office, you get a voicemail box every single time. A rental month for me has been the 15th of every month for many years by my leasing company. I moved in using the same pattern. They don't go by the day you move in; they offer $1 rent, and then they prorate the month coming in. Okay, that's fine. Now I need to move out, and I tell them I'll be out by Feb 3. Oh, but you'll need to pay the entire month, they say! Oh snap. For a measly 3 days, I lost $160, and they refuse to prorate my leave. Wow--quite a racket! So, I asked for the manager to call me, but they never did. I called the 800# for information: I provided a tentative move-out date of the 9th after a line of questions by them. I figured I'd take my time moving out. I get a phone call almost immediately by someone who sounds like he's in high school. I start assuming the worst when these guys call--maybe the unit blew up or something, or a car ran into it. The guy just called because he heard that I'd be moving out on the 8th and wanted to offer some help with the move-out date. Well, then that's just fine. That's great actually. He tells me that if I move towards the end or the beginning of the month, I could avoid the additional month. Well, that's fine. I said, what if I move out on the 3rd? He says no, I'd still have to pay the whole month. Oh... so if I move out on the 9th? Nope, still have to pay the whole month. So I ask--then why are you calling me, cause that doesn't help me at all. He was calling me to try to offer some help. So, I take a step back and allow him to do his pitch. He repeats the same weird line that if I move at the beginning or end of the month, there is no benefit for me. I still don't get why he called. I stopped him and confirmed that saving me money that is not yet due, and I'm already paid for the next 28 days does nothing for help. He replied that he wants to see if he can save my account from canceling. I then thought--how strange is this. You can have a save team that makes sense if you provide a service like internet service or something, where people would cancel to go elsewhere. A storage unit people don't like to move, and they would not go through the effort of moving from one storage unit to another just because they save $10 by going elsewhere. I used this storage unit because I moved on the 15th, and I close on a house on the 3rd of the month. Storage units are not apartments or internet services--save teams are nonsensical. I asked for his manager to call me back. I'm still waiting for a call. When I terminated the auto-pay, it was because I am poor and I don't like auto pays pulling out of my and when I live pay check to paycheck. They called me on a Sunday and didn't leave a message. They called back every few hours, no messages. I looked up the number and saw it was Public Storage and thought... wow. Something is wrong. The place blew up... I was robbed. They called a lot, so I thought the worst. When I finally got someone to pick up (cause usually, they don't pick up, and you have to leave a message), I asked, omg... what happens? I got a half dozen missed calls from this number!!! The girl then tells me no, she was calling to find out what my move-out date was because I canceled the auto-pay. Omg! Are you serious! I didn't know at the time when I was closing, and I don't know the move-out date. That's far in advance. I just paid for the next month... was there a problem with my payment? I paid early...! She then tells me no, they assumed that with auto-pay off, I was moving out. Wow. It never occurred to her that some people are check to check and can't do auto-pay like they can. I loathe auto-pay because you never really recall when the payments come out and when they clear, etc. and they tend to cause probs I don't pay bills like that. Ask the manager to call me back. Still waiting for a call back. The week I moved in, I made a final trip to load stuff in storage... the complex is outside. I was able to get it all done, and I left the gate area at 9:08 pm. They close at 9 pm. The gates are automated. Could you believe that the following day I get an email and a text message saying that they detected that I was late leaving last night and that I should be aware and consider the fact that they close at 9 pm. They leave at 6 pm! Who was held up over me leaving the property 8 mins late! Holy crap. These folks must be socially bored or something to call so much about nothing! stupid stuff. I work doing tech support, and I'm on the phone for 10 hours a day. The last thing I want to do is be on the phone on my day off! I'm still pissed that they won't prorate my moving out but do prorate coming in. Which throws me off significantly, and how management doesn't call back if they know you're gonna complain. read more

Only thing I would suggest is to extend your hours or allow patrons who are in able to leave using their code. I nearly got locked in, unaware I wouldn't be able to get out using my code. Just got robbed last week when I was out of town and they where actually yelling at me e k we the phone. I had a relative lock up what's left. Then got robbed this wee. Police said they were rude to him and uncooperative. I would move my stuff out but the robbers took everything. Mt relative said multiple unit got robbed. SCAM! They charge you for insurance and it's not required by law. They are LIARS!

This is my go to storage facility. They have the best prices (at least to start). The ladies who work the front desk are the best. Very helpful and competent. They will raise your rates but you can ask for a lower rate within two months of the notification of raise. read more

They have security cameras but not inside where the climate control units are. I'm pretty sure that thieves attempted to break into my unit a second time. Make sure you use two licks or just use the top lock. The metal on the bottom is not strong and the thieves can bend it to gain access. I strongly discourage you from getting a unit here. read more

I don't believe in leaving bad reviews, but I have been compelled to make an exception for this. I would strongly caution renting here. Issues I have experienced in my 2 years of renting a 11x25 unit: - PRICE: I signed on at ~$130/month via SpareFoot. Since then, I have received increases every 6 months. The most recent increase puts my monthly total at $400 - more than triple the original rate in 24 months time. The idea is that once you move-in, you will be more willing to accept the increases to avoid the huge inconvenience of moving out. - RESTRICTIONS: The staff restricts you from doing anything on-site. I have been threatened with eviction for assembling storage shelves in my unit, cleaning my unit, and keeping my door partially shut to block the sun. Anything besides fast pick-up and drop-offs is punishable by eviction. I was told that I would need to assemble storage shelving off-site and bring it back once completed to put into the unit. - STAFF: The staff is intentionally confrontational. Very rude. - SECURITY: Multiple break-ins occurred in neighboring units. In each situation, staff was extremely unhelpful. They would not review camera footage, and did not offer solutions of any kind. I would strongly recommend you look elsewhere. read more

This place has tons of roaches and rodents. Poorly managed and twice i noticed tenants using units as a place of business letting in people they shouldnt be. All complaints fall on deaf ears and the advertised price goes up automatically 15% after month 5. So unless you want to move your stuff around and deal with all that you have just read, stay away. read more

Man, these places REALLY rope you in with their "$1 first month's rent!" advertisements. It's like a spirit airlines flight. Start the fare low to reel in the customer and then nickel and dime the hell out of people, irritating the hell out of them. I would rather just be told from the get go the actual price so I know what to expect going in. I'm in between apartments for a few months and living with a friend in the meantime so I needed a small unit to keep a few boxes and a dresser or two. This equated to the smallest unit that the place offered. It was advertised at 50% off the first month's rent (not even the $1 that is on the wall at the center) online, but there was supposedly an online discount. Woo hoo. However, that 50% month 1 discount was quickly negated by the fact that there was a 24.99 charge as an "initiation fee" to start the rental. So my 50.00 unit that was half off was no longer half off. I basically just saved the initiation fee. I called a few days before to speak to a staff member and set up a time to get my keys and sign all the paperwork, and I came around 7pm on a Friday. To my shock and awe, the gates for the complex are only open from 6am to 8pm. This is NOT AT ALL convenient seeing as I'm a night owl-and I also work decently far away and don't get home some days until 7pm. Then I was informed that in August (basically now, I rented the unit in July) it would change to a 7pm gate lock). What? I understand if the office closes after normal business hours, but why can't I go in and get my things? There is a code lock that allows me in and there are cameras monitoring the place, and I have my key to my unit. The "regular business hours" are completely ludicrous. Had I not been in a complete bind to put my stuff somewhere I would have shopped around more. I also found out while shopping around that there is a mandatory insurance policy on the units. The minimum policy is $11.00 a month. I have a renters insurance policy that covers storage units and all of the items inside, but evidently that wasn't sufficient. So for the next 2 months, I'm paying MORE to cover a 5x5 cube than I am for all of my entire apartment. At least those things are double covered. The "lease contract" for a CUBE to put stuff in is outrageous, 9 pages is crazy. Also the fees for missing payments is insane so I went ahead and put it on autopay-and thankfully I won't be keeping stuff here long. read more

Rented a unit last Feb..... Didn't return to the unit till end of October.... In July i was in Austin .... Payment lapsed 30 days ..... I paid the payment in August to catch up and have been caught up since .... One error on my part ... When this happened in July they cut my lock off and put a managers lock on .... Need less to say when I showed up in Oct .... all my box's were stolen .... TVs computers personal items .. Imagine your house now think of everything in your drawers, on your shelves , personal pics .... Business records , Priceless mementos gone... Insurance wont cover it and Public storage deny a problem .... Police think its an insider ... an employee ... When i came with a truck in October guess who let me in .... A maintenance guy ... That means all the employees past and present now had keys to my unit .... I'm missing my whole life and no one will answer for it .... I put all my stuff in storage in February cause I was going to be traveling... So all I had was a suit case .... I went to public storage cause they were a huge company and thought they would have the latest in security .... I paid this company 200$ a month to keep my items safe and secure .... I even took the insurance that they require .... Insurance is a scam they don't cover anything .... No cameras on the rows of storage box's .... and no responsibility for my items .... My life is gone .... My Late grandpas memories... My late friend Georges items.... Even his ashes were taken ... Art work and fine wood working pieces from my uncle .... Over 30 Boxs .... when I showed up lamps were broken items thrown on floor .... I would rather have someone break into my house and rummage through my things .... Instead I packed up my whole house for these thief's ...... Steer clear of public storage .... Your items are not secure here and they don't care to make it right .... The office does not call you back, regardless of how many times you call them. The gate hours are ridiculous, but the only plus side is that this place is heavily gaurded with cameras. So as long as you don't need to get a hold of someone perfect place for your stuff. read more

I had a great experience today when I went to Public Storage in Oakland Park to rent a small storage unit I will need for an indefinite period of time. LaQuayle and Maria were both very helpful. I spoke with Maria over the phone before going in and LaQuayle in person when I went to rent the unit. I must say, LaQuayle took me over to see the unit and explained everything to me, from their hours, options to pay, gate entrance info/explanation, insurance clarification, etc....She really was outstanding.
