We came in 11 people to eat, our tour guide recommended it…read more we order 10 meals, and 10 drinks. nothing fancy when it came to the food, chicken only. when we asked for the bill, we got bunch of small paper which our order was on it, could not understand the writing since it was in spanish, and a piece of long paper with charges on it. it was not a receipt that you get with what your order and the amount next time, there was no way to match the amount with the order. Our bill was 11,000 pesos !!!! which is 700$ there was no way that our bill was so high, since the meals that we order were between 250-300 Pesos. We could not talk to anyone about this, since no one spoke english. a completely rip off!! we were charged dubble the amount!!!! If you eat there just make sure you are paying the right amount.

El Meson is clearly a tourist destination: literally every diner I saw during my meal was clearly not a Yucutan native. However, if you are looking for familiar food in a restaurant with helpful staff, and you are exhausted from your day trip, then you won't go wrong with El Meson del Marques. We started our meal with a couple of the delicious Mexican margaritas (not too sweet, and just as I like them!) accompanied with some tortilla chips and Sikil P'ak, a delicious Yucatan appetizer dip of crushed pumpkin seed, roast tomato, various herbs (often chive; I like cilantro, which El Meson included), all crushed in a mortar and pestle to produce a roasty, slightly chunky dip that is delicious with the ubiquitous tortilla chips. When it came time to order the main course, my husband, who didn't want any more Yucatan cuisine tonight, ordered the salmon. The helpful waiter asked him how he would like this done, and he looked at me in bewilderment, never having to answer such a question about fish. "I'd like it cooked," he said. I immediately had visions of overcooked salmon, and quickly added, "Medium, not overcooked.". He was pleased with the finished product, cooked but not dry! I took a risk and ordered a specialty, the "stuffed cheese". The waiter looked at me hesitantly, and then quickly filled me in that this dish is a bean stew, with a cheese rind. Having done some research into Yucatan cuisine, I knew that incorporating the rinds of Edam cheese into stew is a very traditional approach. The stew arrived, with a big thick cheese rind. I probably only ate half of it, not because I didn't like it, but because the helping was huge! It looked like an innocuous bowl of soup, but just half of that bowl ate like a full meal. Wow. This is a somewhat pricey (by local standards) but good, reliable, very touristy restaurant which will offer you familiar Canadian or American dishes as well as some genuine Yucatan specialties. Service is as polished as it gets, in a dining room with spectacular decor and a wide ranging menu with plenty of choices.

We loved that we could dine outdoors (and hangout with like 15 stray dogs haha) and this was incredibly close to the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza so we were able to grab food here the night before our tour of the ruins. Started off with some pork tacos and some assorted empanadas. The empanadas were good but I would say out of the three things I tried they were my least favorite. The flavor was solid and the fillings and consistency were enjoyable but they lacked the pop of the other two dishes for me personally. I added some of the hot salsas they brought to the table and that made these even better but the tacos and my entree definitely held the edge. These tacos were served on a thicker tortilla than the tortillas they brought for our entrees. I really enjoyed the texture and mouth feel of this compared to a typical corn tortilla. It had more flavor as well to me. The pork had great flavor and was very tender, and the toppings as well as both hot salsa's on this was really great together. I'd eat these tacos all day long. For my entree I decided to get the "Chochinita Pibil" platter. This is this regions famous go to dish so it made perfect sense to try it out. It's a pork that is slow roasted with interesting seasonings like cinnamon, achiote, and allspice. The flavor on this was not similar to things I've had before and I enjoyed it so much. The pork was super tender and there was a bit of a smoky flavor as well. I made some tacos with it and added some of the rice and mole and it was seriously an awesome bite.
