This place started off well with quick service for an outside seat. We ordered fresh guacamole that came out with a great server (we tipped her on the side, very nice) everything seemed ok except the time it took for drinks (not a big deal at the time) the food came about the same time as the drinks. Food was good, though not as ordered, just a side, but asked to have the original request, didn't get delivered until we had finished the meal. Service time slowed to a crawl, biggest concern however was that my credit card was lost between the server ringing it up and bringing back to me and he didn't realize it. Needed to go in from the patio to ask the manager, they found my card outside on the ground of the patio . Yes it was after dark and gone long enough with a crowded area I called and had it canceled. My second time at this restaurant. First time there it was great. Food was good and waiter was nice and attentive. Went there again Saturday with my family. Waiter was not not as attentive as the first visit. Guacamole was good. Had to ask for napkins twice. Had to repeat my order x3 it was the same order we just didn't want beans we wanted rice and one order was French fries!!! One plate was medium rare and two were well done!!! Ok, we get pass that.. food comes one plate come wrong!!! One plate has hair!!! And French fries and hair!!!! This place sucks. The service: downright bad. Snooty hostess that basically ignores you. The waiter not only took 10 minutes to come to my table, and 10 minutes to bring my drink, but brought me entirely the wrong dish. And then didn't show up at all after a bidder dropped it off. So I just sat there for ten minutes with the wrong dish. They sat me with no silverware or napkins and dropped off chips and watery salsa without a plate or any of the above. I went for the first time Saturday me and my daughter the first thing that disturbed me was, it took roughly about 15 minutes to be acknowledged that we've been sitting there, I told my daughter we'll wait 5 more minutes then we're leaving. 2nd we finally got food I order 3 tacos rice and beans which was good nothing extravagant we ate then left by time I got to target I had to use the bathroom stomach cramping like crazy and still a little today Sunday. This restaurant falls short of a five star rating to me because of the service at the beginning of the night. I called in and let them know my family and I were coming and they had quoted 20 to 25 minutes on the phone. I put in my reservation and got there 20 minutes later only to be told it will be another 20-25 minutes. The hostess's at the front have NO concept of how long seating will take. I had once come here with 8 people, and they told me an hour wait. We waited an hour and came back and they said it'd still be another hour to an hour and a half! WTF?? Anyways so this time we ended up waiting through the whole wait to get seated for dinner. The nice thing is the manager came out and served everyone small glasses of margaritas with VERY smooth tequila. It was likely the "good stuff" because I could barely tell it was there but was slightly buzzed afterwards! This was a nice touch, since waiting there was such a pain. Now on to the food. Their chips and salsa are average, what i expected really. We had guacamole made at the table which was pretty good too. If i had to rate those two things along I would give it 3 stars. The main courses were AMAZING. I had dinner with my parents and my brother, and all 4 of us LOVED our meals. They were amazing. First let me say the variety is outstanding. I have been to tons of mexican restaurants and its usually just the typical burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, enchiladas, but this place had a LOT of variety. Each dish was flavorful, well thought out, and just down right delicious. The main course I would rate 5 stars, and it was so good I would come back just for that. Dessert was 3 star quality. I had fried ice cream, though I believe the crust on the outside of the ice cream was stale when it was fried. The flan, I have had better but it wasn't too bad either. Over all the main meal carries this rating to a 4 star rating. I believe this place is worth checking out. I saw many of the less than great reviews and I think since this place is new it is worth letting it get started and figure out what's good and what's not! read more

Ok, so I had earlier written a 4 star review, and was a bit puzzled by the number of critical reviews. I had previously only dined here outside on the patio, probably some 6-7 times over the past several years. Last weekend I finally sat inside on a cloudy and chilly Sunday. I now understand the critical reviews. For me, dining inside especially at a booth makes for a completely different experience than dining on the patio on a nice day. The booths are simply awful -- the seating areas are badly worn and sunk in, and the booths are the type where you're sharing a bench with the party seated at the next booth (it's like a two way facing bench -- the two seating areas aren't anchored to a partition or anything). If the people seated behind you are fidgeting the entire time, you're going to have a lousy time. The only other place I'm aware of that has these is Sally's Pizza, whose interior is of course at least 50 years old, so I'm not sure why a restaurant built in the last decade like Puerto Vallarta would have these awful booths (well, probably because they're cheap). To make it even worse, the back of the booths are straight up with no recline at all and very uncomfortable (To be clear, I'm not overweight and while I'm not a millennial, I'm also not middle aged.) I couldn't wait to finish our meal and get the hell out of these hellish booths. If I had just come here and dined at a booth indoors, I would have rated PV 2 stars and would almost certainly not return. To add a little more color, on a Sunday afternoon there were many babies and screaming toddlers which most of the families took no effort to control. One other criticism my recent visit reinforced for me -- the chicken in any burrito or enchilada is very bland. As I noted in the prior review, the best thing I've had here is the Vegetarian Burrito, as it actually has some flavor. While I'm averaging out the rating to 3 stars, the true ratings are: - If you sit outside on the patio on a nice day, Puerto Vallarta offers a pleasant and unique experience on the Boston Post Road (as long as you get lucky and order something with a bit of flavor). 4 stars for that. - Sitting inside? 2 stars, and will never do it again. read more

This place is really bad! I have been there three times and each time I have not liked what I ate and felt like I paid way too much for it. Unfortunately my husband really liked it the first time we went, so we have been going back. Each time I hope I will find some dish they do well, but no such luck. Between my husband and I, we have had the lamb special, some sort of fried whole fish dish, pastor tacos, beef tacos, carnitas de puerco, and a large seafood soup. The only dish that was good (and the reason we had to keep going back) was the fried fish my husband had. His seafood soup though yesterday has finally convinced him that this place is awful. The shellfish tasted old and fishy. The broth was flavorless. My carnitas weren't horrible, but they were dry. The lamb tasted too old and lamby (good lamb does not have that pungent taste). The pastor tacos I had were not original at all. They have better pastor tacos for A LOT cheaper at the Taquiera Mexicana up the street (most people reading this will probably not dare to venture in there, but it is good!). The only thing thing Puerto Vallarata does well is chips, salsa, and margaritas. So come for happy hour, but go for dinner somewhere else! read more

I was always a big fan of this place. The staff works well together and the food is tasty. However, one visit turned sour and I have not been back since. It is actually quite unfortunate because I did enjoy the food, but I was not a fan of how I was treated when an error in the bill came up. The menu clearly said what my plate cost. My bill arrived and they had charged an extra few dollars. I thought it to be a silly mistake.. I work in the food industry as well and mistakes happen all the time, no big deal. I asked to see the menu again and one waitress understood my problem and brought over the server of my table to go over my issue. He claimed that the entire menu was changing and that some prices are different on the menu than from on the computer. He was very stubborn and would not take off money from the bill. Some people come to restaurants with budgets and cannot afford to be charged random prices without discretion. Though he handled it apologetically, I was very turned off in that I still had to pay the extra few dollars. I'm from west Texas so Tex-Mex is near and dear to my soul. I was completely impressed by the food and service. Right off the bat noticed the entire back parking lot (very accessible and convenient) was nearly full. There were plenty of families (typically good sign), and mariachis singing which offered a relaxed authentic vibe. They prepare giant bowls of fresh guac table side, and offer complimentary chips and salsa and a stack of freshly made corn tortillas true to El Paso form. I enjoyed the ENCHILADAS RIO BRAVO (VERY creamy and cheesy), and they had decent Spanish rice and re fried pinto beans. The service was outstanding, and we left a large tip. I'd come back, and recommend to anyone in the area looking for Mexican food. read more

Okay there are a couple different elements that are giving this a 4 star. My food was good because I went safe with coconut shrimp. Who can mess up coconut shrimp that's why I ordered it. Everything on the menu looked nasty and my cousin got some shrimp dish that wasn't good at all but she loved it and I guess that's all that matters. All the food I saw people ordering we're all looking so nasty. Now I went on a Saturday night and the atmosphere was really awesome they had a live DJ it was a packed house and everybody was having a ball. The drinks were awesome. I had 3 drinks and my coconut shrimp and I paid about $35 overall because of the great atmosphere and the friendly bartenders I'm giving this place 4 Stars just go on a Friday or Saturday when they have the live DJ. As far as food I would rather go to Xpicnas in Hamden but they never have a live band and the atmosphere isn't as great. read more

We have been multiple times before and enjoyed. However...tonights experience left a lot to be desired. We were sat down and waited no less than 15 minutes for our waiter to come over. I will say that the bus boy delivered our chips, salsa, and water within two minutes. We ordered enchilada mole and fajitas for our dinners as well as the fonduita. We nibbled on chips (really good) and waited. About ten minutes later, our waiter came back because he forgot our ordee. Okay, it happens. Our fonduita came out. No chorizo that I could taste, nor any poblanos. Plus, whatever meat was in it was tasteless and extremely greasy. And...under the cheese, which was not smooth or easy to get out of the dish and onto my corn tortilla (very yummy tortillas). I went online and reread the description of the dish and what I was served was nothing like described. We ate very little. Meals..they came out ok. The mole enchilada was extremely cinnaminnoy to the point of almost choking. The fajitas were warm not cold. I wasn't given a plate dor my fajitas so I used my appetizer plate. I was also not given additional tortillas for the fajitas but when our waiter came over (busboy delivered our meals) he brought me more...just flour not corn. Overall fajitas were ok, and a good sized portion. We really were not thrilled so we went to leave. We did take leftovers home of our entrees, although I can guarantee that the enchilada will go in the trash. I did order an order of sopapillas for dessert because it is truly one of my favorites. However, they were missing the chocolate drizzle and whipped cream. The waiter must have known something was off because he didn't put our sopapilla on the bill. read more

My wife has been here before and suggested we get lunch here. Great choice. I got the torta with pastor and she got the pollo mole. Both the lunch special. My torta was awesome. It needed jalapeños which they have me when I asked. Almost as good as a bodega you would go to in Norwalk. The pollo mole was super tasty. Tasty enough to where that the dish I'll get next time. I took my nephew here for his 10th birthday. We went on a Friday night and the place was jamming. We had to wait 45 minutes, I could not believe this. At first we left and were driving to Sloppy Jose's but then found out they were closed. While waiting we were treated to free margaritas, they were small but we each had 2 and that was enough of a treat for me(it made the wait go by much easier..LOL) The food is good American Mexican food. The wait staff was very professional. My only complaint is the seating needs to be plumped up, the booth seats are worn and saggy and I sank in and felt uncomfortably low. This is a great watering hole at the end of a long week! It's too cool now, but soon I can drink at the outdoor patio. Today I had arroz con pollo, which was a bit undercooked for my liking, and my husband had steak encebellado, which was a bit overdone. But we enjoyed both. Perhaps it was the flight of margaritas we had with it. We also had the pork lettuce wraps, and the lettuce could've been crisper. The atmosphere is a bit loud but one can talk without shouting and the Mexican music they play is very enjoyable.
