I have never had a worse dining experience in my life. The food was awful!! I got my meal 30 mins late as well my friend was served pork when she ordered chicken meanwhile we were not given silverware or napkins. Everyone else around us was given glass glasses and we were served with plastic. I've come here a couple of times for a drink and a bite, and have been super happy with the quality of the food, drinks, and service. This time I went with the blackberry pisco sour and the lomo saltado empanada sampler, both of which were absolutely perfect. And a side of plantains was the ideal not-quite-dessert! The food is good, the service/management terrible. They take reservations but do not honor them. I requested a table away from the door, they gave me the table in front of the door. Drink order arrived wrong, server brought food then literally disappeared. Another server who took our payment stood at the register making calls on her cell phone and needed 2 guys from the kitchen to come out and help her process the credit card order. Two years ago this had a fine dining vibe, but now it gets a bar crowd. And like I said, the food was delicious but I won't be back. read more

Chacra is one of the go-to nightlife locations in Downtown New Haven. I had the pleasure of working with Chacra to host a community event here and they did not disappoint! The food was amazing, the manager, Walter, was extremely easy to work with and all the staff members were super accommodating and helped bring our vision to life! They have an incredible outdoor dining space, complete with a covered outdoor patio and very spacious back yard area with an outdoor bar. It's okay. Went there with my colleagues and my partner. It wasn't busy, but the service took a while to get to us. Additionally, my coworker asked for the Machu Pichu (a Peruvian beverage) and the waiter brought a pisco sour. Apparently, the restaurant doesn't offer a the beverage that was ordered. It offered authentic Peruvian food but not the greatest. The seafood didn't taste fresh. Quite unfortunate. The food was edible. The space is well decorated and cute at night. read more

An impromptu visit to a new spot we had not seen since our visit last year, and it did not disappoint! We are fans of Peruvian food, and we have a couple of favorites back in Los Angeles. However, the places we often visit do not have a bar like this, with reasonably priced well drinks that were absolutely done right and tasted so good, it left me wanting more. Now, add in the cuisine, good conversation, very friendly and attentive staff, and you have a recipe for success! We started out with the papas huacaina which were just ok, followed it up with the Classico ceviche, which was full of a lime flavor balanced just right and complimented with the sweetness from the plantains. And finally, the Lomo Saltado - just wow!! Each meal kept improving on the prior dish and the lomo saltado was probably the best we ever had! Highly recommend this place, and I'm almost positive that once you try it you will become instant fans too! Chacra is an authentic Peruvian restaurant and Pisco bar that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in September 2022. It was founded by restaurateur Walter "Jefferson" Vera. A presence in the New Haven food scene for 20 years, Vera began as a server before rising the ranks to become a restaurant manager. For a number of years, he was the manager at nearby Pacifico (a popular Latin-American fusion restaurant) and later Barcelona Wine Bar. Chacra is the first venture where Vera is the owner and proprietor. It also has the distinction of being the only Peruvian restaurant in downtown New Haven. The menu features classic Peruvian dishes, including nine types of ceviche. The bar menu places emphasis on pisco: a type of brandy that's native to the winemaking regions of Peru and Chile. I was recently invited to Chacra to attend an exclusive tasting event for local foodie influencers. This was my first visit to Chacra as well as my first time sampling authentic Peruvian cuisine. I was not at all familiar with pisco, so everyone recommended that I order a classic "Pisco Sour" (pisco, fresh lime juice, jarabe de goma, egg whites, angostura bitters). The sourness was balanced out by the sweet, fruity notes; I really enjoyed every sip. For food, the group was treated to a variety of different plates such as "Papas a la Huancaina", "Lomo Saltado Empanadas", "Clasico Ceviche", and "Chicharron con Yuca". Everything was so delicious! For a second cocktail, I opted for the "Barbuja" (pisco, fresh lime juice, passion fruit, jarabe de goma, prosecco dropped). This was a nice change from my previous cocktail. For dessert, the group was served sweet treats such as "De La Selva", "Helado Lucuma" and "Arroz con Leche". Helpful staff, beautiful plate presentation, and a phenomenal feast!! I had high hopes when my husband made reservations at Chacra Pisco Bar for Valentine's Day. However, the experience got off to a rocky start when the person seating us barely acknowledged us. I just gave my name and he stared at his tablet in silence before I prompted that we were likely first on the list. In a standoffish tone he replied "I know" and led us to a cramped table in the very back, right by the bathroom and high traffic bar area. Once we got our actual waiter, the service greatly improved. He warmly presented us the Valentine's Day menu and let us know we could also order from the regular menu. The drinks from the cocktail-savvy bartender were excellent - her virgin Mojitos and Moscow Mules were perfectly balanced. The food was hit or miss. The empanadas with the creamy dipping sauce were sublime. My husband loved his lomo saltado. My salmon la haucaina was unfortunately overly salty, so I could only manage a small bite. However, the side of quinoa, potatoes, spinach and tomatoes was fantastic. Dessert is where things totally fell apart. The flan tasted so off that I immediately spit it out. My tres leches cake could have doubled as a hockey puck - when I tapped it with my spoon, it made a hard thud against the plate. It was dry and flavorless inside. I had to chase my first bite with water. We informed our apologetic waiter about the tres leches. He went to the same person who sat us about our concern, and he brushed it off. he asked for a suggestion from another coworker, and she suggested to offer us another dessert. Unfortunately, with our experience with both desserts we just named that it was just feedback and we were OK with the check. I am still happy that they at least tried to make that right buy us. So in summary - inconsistent service, drinks and empanadas were excellent, some dishes shone while others disappointed, and desserts were downright inedible. I wanted to love Chacra for Valentine's Day but the uneven execution means I likely won't return. read more

Piscojito drink was good although they were out of my first choice of dragon, fruit flavor, and I ended up with mango flavor, the grilled octopus appetizer was good, but way smaller than shown on their menu (IPhoto is thumb size or bigger and I got the pinky size order). Calamari frito was done nicely. My Entree was the seafood Parihuella. There were several similar seafood dishes, but our waitress (from Honduras ) recommended this dish. This is one of my favorite type of dishes to get when I'm dining out. This was my first time at a "Peruvian" restaurant and this dish was quite bland. Since it was my first time at a Peruvian Restaurant,, somebody will have to tell me if that's what I should've expected, but I thought it would have some flavor, maybe some spice. Overall, we got the meals that we ordered. Waitress was nice enough but not very attentive. We waved at her for the bill and still waited long enough for me to go to the rest room and take a photo for the only other diners (group of 7 presumably Peruvian males) and still wait when I returned to the table. First time I came I had the chicharrones with yucca and oyster chalacas. It was delicious! The chicharrones were crispy and tender and the oysters had a perfect balance of spice and acidity. I went tonight and the chalacas were still delicious but the chicharrones were chewy and full of fat. Not worth the $20 price. Service was still great though. The waitress was attentive and kept checking in on us. The ambiance is nice, it's a small space but still good music and nice decor. read more

Ximena was our waitress and when I'd asked what was good, she told me everything was good - and she was right! We had the best Peruvian food! Went here recently and am on the fence about giving it another try. The drinks were great, clearly made with fresh ingredients. I wouldn't have thought I could find a good Pisco sour in New Haven until I stopped here considering the lack of Peruvian food in the area. Now to the food. We ordered off the restaurant week menu and got anticucho and papas a la huancaina which both arrived lukewarm. Taste wise they were good so we weren't too bothered by that but it was a bit of a bummer. As an entree we ordered ceviche and pollo a la brasa, only one of our orders was correct. Instead of ceviche we got a lomo saltado but thought we may have misremembered the order since we were back and forth on those items and service was iffy so we just settled instead of flagging someone down. We had two servers the second was great but the first was apathetic. According to the check we did order the ceviche so that was another let down at the end. The pollo was dry which was a huge surprise considering what a big menu item that was and on the regular menu for the price 1/4 of dry chicken would not be worth it. Flavor wise it was good but the deeper into the chicken you ate the more bland and sad it became. I think the most disappointing part for me was the chaufa, it was flavorless and tasted old. The consistency was not right for freshly made rice unless they cook it to death. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was crunchy but it was getting there. The lomo was also fairly bland, ended up drenching it in aji. Overall for the cost of the meal we left disappointed but was impressed at the look of the restaurant its beautifully designed. Maybe we'll return if they have happy hour or something but this isn't gonna be a night out spot, I'll save my cash for a better experience. read more

There are many interesting cocktails to choose from. I had the pisco sour and my husband had the piscojito. They were both quite good. The traditional Peruvian menu has many choices. The appetizers were the highlight. We had beef on skewers, a corn and Lima bean salad and some fried yucca. They are served with a spicy sauce and a creamy sauce for dipping. I had the traditional limos saltado for my entree and my husband had seafood stew. All was quite good. The overwhelming impression I got from tis place was a sort of ennui. It is located in a busy area of restaurants and the guest i met there was concerned about getting in because it was commencement weekend. When i walked in there were no other diners a a few staff. The interior is a small, cozy area with an adjacent bar. There is an nice outdoor patio with plenty of tables, space and enclosed from surrounding environs. We sat outside hoping to have more space and quiet. We had both since in 2 hrs of time, no one else came to the place save a few folks who sat inside. The menu and cuisine appears to be fully authentic Peruvian fare, which apparently is heavily ceviche based. There is an online lunch menu but we were given a dinner one with significantly higher prices. My compadre had ceviche and I ad a hot dish. The food was unexceptional and not terribly tasty. It was also plater in both a fussy and kind of lazy way. The meat in my portion was more like a child's size and on the dry side. My dining friend got ceviche and while they didn't complain I wasn't hearing any compliments about it either. The service was generally attentive but this was unquestionable due to the fact the place was EMPTY. The waiter was a bit overly pushy on extras like drinks and desserts but pleasant enough. All told we split a bottle of still water and there was a "street corn" appetizer and with a tip the entire meal was about $40 each. Now were this NYC that kind of a lunch bill would be understandable (even for mediocre food) but for this one, much too high. My highest compliments were the patio, which was safe, welcoming and relaxing. I was told by the person I shared the meal with that the place which was the prior establishment would park the patio and it was bustling. I'm the picture from the menu down I was at the restaurant. We we first one's there for lunch and Dayana was a wonderful host. She's so sweet, very friendly pleasant to talk to very helpful with the menu because one person was sure what to get and she ask and then suggested the roasted chicken with salad and fries came with it. Overall opinion is that this place is still figuring it out because it's new. Waited about 15-20 minutes at the door with three other parties as, what seemed like the owner, bussed tables in between bringing other tables their meals. Typically one is greeted and told what to expect...but we all just waited while everyone avoided eye contact and buzzed by. Drinks were good but the food was just ok honestly, and not quite worth the price for what was received. The waitress we had was very sweet but as I'm sure they're still learning, we were asked how things are going multiple times by several people but not a single plate was taken from our table to make room until the very end (as one example). Came here for dinner for their pre fixe menu (not including drinks), ordered the empanada tasting, anticucho, ceviche, seco de res chiclayano, flan, arroz con leche, and two cocktails, pisco sour and one with strawberries and basil in it (cannot remember name). Initially asked if we wanted still or sparkling water, did not know we could just get tap, charged $8?! Which is crazy. The empanadas were disappointing, on the dry side, under-seasoned and only one flavor of empanadas. They were also tiny. Anticucho (veal heart skewers) were absolutely delicious. I would eat that again. Super tender and well seasoned. The ceviche was good, not blown away by it. The seco de res chiclayano was also absolutely amazing. Meat was extremely tender and the sauce it was stewed in was to die for. Only complaint was how little meat we got, just three little chunks. In general the portions seemed small for what we paid for. The flan was a bit curdled on the outside and slightly smoother in the center. The arroz con leche was delicious, creamy sweet, hint of cinnamon. Would come here again for cocktails, the pisco sour was great, light, semi sweet, little sour. The strawberry basil cocktail just needed less basil. Overall okay experience. I would give this another try outside of their pre fixe menu nights. read more

We had an incredible experience. Started with Pisco Sours that tasted as if they were from Peru. We then had the original ceviche, tuna tiradito, and Peruvian street corn. For a Peruvian restaurant I was quite disappointed for how my meal came out. I ordered the Pariheulla and tallarin con mariscos, as well as the ceviche Classico. I'll start off with the good news.. some of the best ceviche you will get in downtown New Haven; it was fresh and had the right ratio of citrus and garlic, my only complaint was the portion was small given the price tag. Now for my entrees... both dishes severely lacked favor which was a major disappointment. My pariheulla was a seafood broth with no true flavor, to the point were i had to add salt for flavor (i was desperate). Not typical for a Peruvian restaurant. A great addition to the downtown scene! Food and drinks are delicious and otherwise unique to this area. They also have no issue seating large parties. During restaurant week they had a plantain ice cream Sunday that changed the way I see ice cream. All of that being said, they are far too expensive for most college students and young professionals.
