It was fine. Pricey! Went on a Sunday mid afternoon so it was t very busy and service was rather slow considering. They didn't have vegetarian options listed so I had to ask a lot of questions. The bean dip that arrived shortly after we sat down had pork fat and our server did know this when we asked so that was good. I'd like restaurants in CT to make an effort to show vegetarian on their menu. The enchiladas didn't even have a vegetarian option but they came back and gave me one. This was our first time visiting La Catrina's West Haven location, and we have to say we were very impressed! We had loved their food in Milford, and we found it was even more delicious here. We visited during their breakfast hours (Saturday & Sunday 8:30am-3pm), and it's some of the most authentic and tastiest Mexican breakfast in the area. Stand out items were the lachera pancakes, ham and cheese omelette because of how flavorful it was, and the lamb Barbacoa. The drinks were fantastic, from the simple chocolate banana milkshake to cocktails lit on fire! Since we were there close to lunch, we also enjoyed their birria tacos and signature La Catrina meat and shrimp platter, both being delicious as well. What a wonderful experience! You are greeted with a delicious bowl of warm black bean dip and chips. Large menu with plenty of Mexican favorites along with burgers, steaks, chicken and pork chops. Service was impeccable! I had the carnitas taco and it honestly was the best taco I ever tasted and a side of refried beans. My dad and hubs had the el pastor taco dinner and they were very happy. The menu at La Catrina features a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes, including tacos, burritos, tostadas and delicious drinks! The food is made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the flavors are bold and authentic with generous portions! The service at La Catrina although friendly was a little slow- but we did go on Cinco de mayo and it happen to be the Friday night dinner rush time. However, our server was really sweet and happy to make recommendations but immediately told us that she didn't speak English well. We had no issues in communicating with her although we had to be very attentive in how we ordered- for example we ordered 2 shots of Parton and she misunderstood that as double 2 shots for an order of 4 shots- it was a hilarious mishap avoided. We did try their amazing $6.50 margaritas special - the passion fruit and guava were generous in portion and STRONG the way I like it! We tried their Corn Elote for appetizer, the Camarones Tostadas, and the Pork carnitas tacos (all pictured here) and it was amazing!! This is a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family if you're looking for a great authentic Mexican restaurant. La Catrina is a great option. The Margarita tasted like syrup sugar water & the salsa in the nachos didn't have "any" vegetables in it. Portions were on the small side & the food almost looked like something a child platted. The salsa looked just like Frank's hot sauce; it sure looks like no salsa I ever seen. Too bad. Enchiladas were made with quality ingredients, authentic and all the ingredients seemed to be fresh and very competently prepared. My partner had the steak, and it was tender and flavorful. Great authentic Mexican food! I had some shrimp fajitas which came out sizzling and tasted great. Being from Southern California, I'm a bit spoiled with Mexican food but this was on par with much of what I'm use to back home. The guac and margs are also great!
