I found Puppyland through volunteering and loved every second of it! The animals were taken care of greatly and though some animals weren't up for adoption they still made sure they were healthy and their needs were met. Lorn was a very great manager to the place and the reason I got my cat Scarlett. My mini best friend! Lorn does have some medical issues but does what he can so volunteers are so helpful. read more

I inquired about a dog over the weekend, and the male/owner was grumpy and felt like I was annoying him. I called today about the status of the dog, and the owner told me to "go to hell". I feel sorry for the animals in his care. I saw feces in each dog cage. Still interested in helping that dog, but the owner is not friendly nor helpful. read more

I have been part of this shelter going on 8 and a half years. Never seen neglect or abuse from any of the management or volunteers. They take in the sick and older animals on occasion and bring them back to health. I know when I am there I know the animals are treated with love. Shame on those who beg to differ. There are better things to do with yourself than try to close this shelter. They have been open since 1948. I am behind Puppyland 100%. read more

Stopped by yesterday a few minutes after noon and learned Puppyland hours are 8am-12noon. Was met by the manager named Lorn. I asked to see the dogs for adoption. Upon entering the dog building, there were 5 dogs, three were 'not available for adoption' and wouldn't offer me why they were there or why they were not adoptable. The two that I was told were adoptable had hand written signs on the cage telling me to stay back. The barking was insane in the building, like crazy energy. I turned my body in the direction of a cage where a dog was barking like a wild, crazed animal. Lorn spoke with a stern, loud voice, 'I told you that dog is NOT available!' (There was no attempt on his part to connect with the dogs in any way. Maybe he was having a bad day? or I arrived... after hours?) If I was interested in a dog, there was no place to connect/play with it. I learned later that this is a 'no kill shelter'. I wondered where the dogs came from. Are dogs assessed as they come in. There was no story about offered about any of the dogs. Puppyland allows children under 18 to volunteer and I wonder who helps the behavioral needs of these animals. Puppyland has been around for a long time and Lorn told me he is the manager. I wonder if they have a board of directors? How can community support the safety of the animals and visitors and ensure the animals a quality of life while waiting to be adopted out or die? It was a pretty confusing visit. If I could give 0 stars I would.‼‼‼So Cali(our first cat from here, got her last September) was diagnosed with ring worm last Friday, vet said Viper(second cat from here, got him in May)probably had it while he was at the shelter (doesn't surprise me since conditions aren't the greatest) and must have gotten through it before we adopted him. Took him in yesterday and turns out he still had traces of it on him but she plucked the two hairs that had it and is now ring worm "free". I decided to message puppyland to let them know..person running the Facebook page said that they are aware of the ring worm and are currently treating the other cats/kittens. They claim they do a full vet check up but if they actually did a FULL check up, they would have found ring worm in those kittens. Not once did we receive a phone call letting us know that he might have had ring worm. I told them that for the future they really should make their customers aware of these issues even if it doesn't have affect on the cat. That's just what good businesses do. I told them that I had contracted the ring worm as well. They eventually go on to tell me that I am banned from stepping foot on their property and even threatened to call the cops. This all may seem one sided but I have screenshots to prove all the messages and I was not rude at all. I did not ask for money back, I was simply letting them know about our situation and that they should treat their other animals. I posted this on social media, and got a lot of comments saying that they are surprised this place isn't shut down yet. One person told me the cats they got there came with fleas! Unfortunately the local police have bigger problems to deal with so that's why I'm leaving this review ‍ Adopt here at your own risk! PS the cat building smells HORRIBLE! Hope this helped! read more

SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN OR CLEAN UP YOUR ACT!!! PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW!! I was a volunteer are Puppyland Humane Society for a short amount of time. In this time I tried extremely hard to help this place improve from its very low standards. In the beginning, I went into this place knowing it had a bad reputation. When I arrived, I could see why, but I had hope that with my efforts and the effort of the other fantastic adult volunteers, we could market this place and use our manpower to make vast improvements. At first, we would clean cat cages and do dog walking. Both the cat cages and dog cages were always completely disgusting. Full of feces, vomit, hair, dirt, you name it. Same with the food and water. It was hard to believe that there were any other volunteers coming into this place and doing any of the work. We always pointed out the issues we saw, to the manager (Lorn) and we were usually blown off and given some reason that the place was in extra bad condition that week. If that was the only problem, I would have kept my faith. In time, many animals were coming down with different illnesses ( eye infections, respiratory infections, etc...) One cat in particular was sick with a respiratory infection for weeks...Lorn decided that instead of treating the cat, it would be a better idea to euthanize her. My friend was going to adopt her out of the shelter the next day, after hearing about her terrible condition. So many of the kittens had worms literally crawling out of their butts! If Puppyland wouldn't have disabled comments on their Facebook page, you could read the reviews of adopters that had issues with their new pet's health. But they needed to cover that up to not get bad exposure...classy. Sounds like a place that should be in business. On another occasion, I took a 3 week old kitten home to foster, after I found him lying in his own diarrhea, basically dying. He came home with me for a couple days, and his symptoms didn't improve, so I took him to the Emergency vet (completely my choice, I paid for the medical bills of over $200 to try to save the poor babies life.) Unfortunately, he didn't make it. We went to Lorn and all he had to say was " you shouldn't have taken it to the vet, you should have brought it back. You are no longer allowed to foster animals from here...there is not point in fostering these kittens, they will die anyway". After this comment, we exchanged some words and Lorn told me either to leave or he will call the sheriff to have me escorted off the property. He told me I was there to clean & feed the animals...I did not have to be involved with the well being of them. Um...no. Psycho. I honestly was making such great progress getting the community to donate to the shelter and that Puppyland even existed at all! The same day I was kicked out, at least 5 people came in to either donate supplies or a monetary amount, all of which I recruited to do so. He now has kicked out nearly all of the adult volunteers that are too wise for him and will not keep their mouths shut and think this place is fine. He keeps the 14-15 year old girls that are too young to realize this place is not even close to being kept up to standards. They are the ones that update their facebook page every so often & their website every 6 months. Good job. Also, they had such a bad flea infestation in August 2016 that they don't allow the animals being kept there to have blankets or anything. In the middle of the winter. Sitting on a concrete floor. IF YOU NEED TO SURRENDER AN ANIMAL IN WASHINGTON COUNTY, PLEASE TAKE IT TO WCHS. THEY ARE AMAZING. BUT PLEASE DO ADOPT FROM THE UNFORTUNATE AT PUPPYLAND. Your animal will either take 6+ months to get adopted out at Puppyland or will die there. Disgusting and shameful. read more

no problems for me. I was a volunteer at Puppyland years ago when my kids were younger and we all helped out, cleaning cages and walking dogs. Thats when I found our next dog Shilo there. She was there because she would have been put down at a larger humane society, I contacted her previous owners which Puppyland gave me and they told me the odds were against her in a larger facility and she had a few personality issues, separation anxiety) Shilo was healthy up to date on vaccines and no worms, flees or health issues what so ever. She was my best friend for 10+ years. This is a small no kill shelter that needs all the help they can get and I go there often to drop off donations and its old but not like the other reviews are describing it. People need to check it out for themselves instead of going on negativity that people post. Yes there are teenagers there helping out, there is also a manager who is busy trying to run the place, take animals to the vet and get supplies. Disgruntal people only post bad reviews so dont believe all the negativity and volunteer or stop by before believing all the haters. read more

Puppyland Humane Society Inc. is under new management now and they are doing great. The place has REALLY improved. They are not affiliated with the previous owners or that website. The new website is www.puppylandhumanesociety.org and they have a facebook page at www.facebook.com/puppylandhumanesocietyinc All of the animals are well taken care of and loved. The facility is cleaned daily. They even wash all the blankets and stuff that the animals use. They all seem to be fed well and correctly. They still have work to do, but they are on top of it. Looking for a young kid hangout? I can't believe this place calls themselves an animal shelter. My family and I stopped in over the weekend. NOBODY was taking care of the animals. It looked like about 4 or 5 teenaged girls were having a party. NOT professional at all!!!!! We were looking for a cat for my daughter. We will NOT be back to this place. We've been volunteering for, and donating to Puppyland for some time now and will continue to do so. We like the fact that is a volunteer-run, no-kill shelter. The manager and other volunteers really care about the animals--the animals are well cared for and the cages always look clean. I was a volunteer for a very short time at Puppyland. On my first day there I found a 4 week old kitten cold and dying in a cage. Despite the efforts of one of the other volunteers, the kitten died. Because that volunteer sought medical care for it she was told to never come back. I don't understand that! Upon my second visit I saw several kittens with severe eye infections and one that was crawling with tapeworms. When I brought it to the managers attention, I too was told not to come back. There was also an adult cat with a serious respiratory infection that from what I was told had been suffering with it for weeks! A friend of one of the volunteers went in to adopt the cat two days later and was told " It is gone" ! When asked what that meant he was told again "It is gone"! Just like that! There are some very disturbing things going on at that place and it has been on the radar of concerned people for years. I say either step it up folks and do your job or give it up. read more
