Stopped by yesterday a few minutes after noon and learned Puppyland hours are 8am-12noon. Was met by the manager named Lorn. I asked to see the dogs for adoption. Upon entering the dog building, there were 5 dogs, three were 'not available for adoption' and wouldn't offer me why they were there or why they were not adoptable. The two that I was told were adoptable had hand written signs on the cage telling me to stay back. The barking was insane in the building, like crazy energy. I turned my body in the direction of a cage where a dog was barking like a wild, crazed animal. Lorn spoke with a stern, loud voice, 'I told you that dog is NOT available!' (There was no attempt on his part to connect with the dogs in any way. Maybe he was having a bad day? or I arrived... after hours?) If I was interested in a dog, there was no place to connect/play with it. I learned later that this is a 'no kill shelter'. I wondered where the dogs came from. Are dogs assessed as they come in. There was no story about offered about any of the dogs. Puppyland allows children under 18 to volunteer and I wonder who helps the behavioral needs of these animals. Puppyland has been around for a long time and Lorn told me he is the manager. I wonder if they have a board of directors? How can community support the safety of the animals and visitors and ensure the animals a quality of life while waiting to be adopted out or die? It was a pretty confusing visit. I am open to feedback on you comments.

Where can I find pictures of the current animals available at Puppyland? The photos shown are all from two years ago.

I believe you can go on petfinders.com and type in puppyland. Otherwise check their Facebook page.

OMGoodness! This place is a piece of heaven right here in Ozaukee County. I overheard some people…read moretalking about the Blue Heron Wildlife Preserve while I was at a dog park. I asked a few basic questions and found out that it was a place where I could go walking on trails with my service dog. We love to walk trails so I became fixated on finding out where this place was. It's only about 12 minutes away from my home so I decided we should find it. We took a Sunday drive to go look for it and I am so happy we did. This is a beautiful, natural preserve. I really hope that people that come here will make the effort to keep it beautiful. The trails are long and clean and they extend onward forever. The air is crisp and cool and inviting. I just wanted to walk off into the sunset and never come back. I was reminded of all the times I went volksmarching in Germany. They were the happiest times of my tour of Germany. I love being out in nature so I know my service dog and I will come here often. I can't wait to bring a friend and explore the trails. It's a little daunting because the trails go on and on. I wasn't comfortable going alone but I just know great adventures await us. If you love being outside and close to nature, you'll have to explore this place. Be respectful. Keep it clean. Take your trash back with you. Don't leave dog poop everywhere. Let's work hard to keep places like this open and available for everyone to enjoy. My dog and I were only out for about 20 minutes but I felt revived. I felt renewed. I felt reconnected to the earth.

These are volunteers who make it their mission to care for these animals. We try to get in a few times a year to help out. I should also say that we have received one cat from them who was in perfect health. And we had to surrender another cat that we found abandoned. Thank you for the work that you do!
