Sopa de mariscos
Taylor S.

10/10!! Chips were just out the fryer fresh! Definitely top 3 for sopa de mariscos in the area! Plus it's only $18 (usually there around 26+) and the give you a whole crab inside (most places will only give you half) The Pescado frito was also a 10/10! We didn't get the pupusas this time but we do get them often from here, they have SOOO many options and are always hot a good service is also really good

I thought I already reviewed this place, but I guess I haven't. This will blow your mind if you're into Salvadorian and food. And it will broaden your horizons if you aren't. They have too many good things to list, but their Pupusas are excellent and they have so many choices for fillings. They also have this great sweet quesadilla, which I think is a Salvadorian traditional cultural dish. It resembles a mildly cheesy cake. It's quite sweet and has lots of corn flavor more, than it does what we think of as a quesadilla. But it's definitely worth a try. You could also try their Atol de Elote it's a hot corn drink or the Atol de piña, which is a hot pineapple drink - kind of like a thick, oatmeal sweet, warm, delicious wonderful interior hug.

Loved their College Park location and I'm so glad I finally made it to their Wheaton restaurant. You can tell that the pupusas are made fresh and they come out to the table with the cheese practically molten on the inside. I'll admit I haven't strayed beyond that section of the menu to try other offerings--there are so many different options when it comes to pupusas, and the prices are very reasonable too!

Delish Salvadorean food. I love pupusas and they have the most extensive varieties I've ever seen. They use special ingredients for good flavor like herbs, variety of cheese, meats, etc. Each time I come here, I try different types. I am a fan!

Sopa de res
Marlon B.

Ordered carry out from Pupuseria La Familiar on a weekday. I phoned it in since I was unable to order online. Overall the experience was good. I ordered the sopa de res, pupusas revueltas and bean and cheese. I also had a chicken tamale, a pastel de carne and Salvadoran quesadilla. The sopa de res was a little too salty for my taste. The broth was dark like it had too much beef bouillon. However, the veggies were cooked well as the cabbage was not wilted and the corn was crunchy. They provided 2 large pieces of short rib which was cooked to perfection. The pastel de carne was a little over cooked however it was large. It contained a mixture of ground beef, potatoes and spices. It was good but I have had better. The chicken tamale was good also. I did not take a pic but it was the usual fare for a tamale. The pupusas were thick and had a good mixture of filling. These were good and give a few other spots a run for their money when it comes to pupusas. I asked if the Salvadoran quesadilla was fresh but it tasted like it had been out all day. It was still good but I have had fresher. I washed this down with fresco de Tamarindo. The tamarindo was bitter like it had been a batch from the previous day. Overall, the food was good and the prices were decent. There are certainly more expensive places that give you less food.

Ensalada de fruta

My impression of Salvadoran/Central American food has entirely changed after having eaten here. This place greatly impressed me by all the delicious ethnic food that is most definitely DISTINCT from Mexican cuisine. Appetizers: Baleada - 5/5 - super delicious quesadilla-like filled with tender steak and eggs Chips & guacamole - 3.75/5 - not the best yet the worst that I've had Pastelitos de pollo o res - 4/5 - interesting fried meat pastries Chicharron & yuca - 5/5 - perfectly fried, tender on the inside Entrees: Salpicon - 5/5 - the seasoning in the diced (minced) meat is super delightful and aromatic; a favorite Costillas de res - 4.5/5 - delicious charbroiled short beef ribs Carne deshilada - 4/5 - peeled/shredded meat with eggs made with scrambled eggs Pupusas (de camaron, de espinaca, de chilipin, de frijoles & queso) - 4/5 - pretty good but not particularly impressive Carne asada - 4/5 - pretty good charbroiled steak but not particularly outstanding Camarones entomatados - 4/5 - the tomato sauce itself was quite salty (hopefully not the usual preparation ); shrimp itself was very fresh and chewy Beverage: Ensalada de fruta - 5/5 - delightful mixed fruit juice (strongly mango though) filled with diced fruit Service: super friendly, considerate and patient Ambience: interior makes you feel as if you were in a small town central american restaurant

When that deshilada hit the table... I was like... oh no, we've made a huge mistake. I don't know what exactly I was expecting, but I can tell you that it was not that. I've never had deshilada before. First of all, I've learned that Deshilar mean's to fray, to get thin, shreds. And that's exactly what this dish was. Shreds of brisket mixed with egg, peppers, a few other things. It did not look wholly appetizing to be honest. Served along side of it was refried beans, a hearty slice of avocado, a soft cheese, fluffy rice, spicy pickled onions, and 2 housemade tortillas. Verdict: F*cking Delicious. All of it. All the bits and the bites and the bots. The meat that was running through the eggs was cooked perfectly. Refried beans were delicious. The two handmade tortillas were standout. THICK homemade tortillas. We're talkin' like a centimeter thick. The spicy onions were s-piiiicc-eeeyy. Watch out for them. But they also added a really nice contrast to the meal. If I got it again, I'd probably order another side of tortillas, cause a taco with the deshilada, avocado, refried beans and rice was like heaven. Rice was cooked next to perfect. We got the tamale de gallina (chicken tamale) : Standout, fantastic tamale. Great look to it too. Pupusa with spinach and cheese; FANTASTIC Chips with Guacamole: Chips were freshly cooked and the guacamole was super fresh, nice, and acidic. Pupusa with all of everything: This is the only thing we got which I did not fancy. Just tasted a bit too... not good.... Too many flavors competing. Went back 2 nights ago and got a burrito and a bean and cheese pupusa. Both we're freakin' delicious. The burrito was the size of a small football. Much softer and wetter inside than I expected, but none the less delicious. Can't wait to go back to this place and eat more through the menu.

Food: - Carne Asada: I love carne asada and meat in general but I was pretty disappointed by the carne asada here. I was expecting a more authentic and flavorful carne asada bc of the hole in the wall vibe but the meat just wasn't that flavorful not much seasoning. I think I've had better carne asada at chain such as Uncle Julio's which is surprising. On the plus side, they give a decent portion and the price is cheap compared to other places. -Chicken Quesadilla: The quesadilla was probably the best thing we got from the visit. Hefty portion, lots of cheese, and lots of chicken. Not spectacular but good overall. Came with sour cream and guac! -Pork and Cheese pupusa: So I thought that the pupusas would be the highlight of the meal bc of the name of the resteraunt but I was once again slightly disappointed. The pupusas weren't bad but they weren't great. Not much flavor and there was kind of a strange after taste from the meat. I've had better pupusas elsewhere. TLDR: Probably would not come again but if I did I'd probably just get a quesadilla during a lunch break. Also I'm not an expert on el salvadorian food by any means haha.

Pupusas with frijoles, loroco, and queso (yum!) And a side of platanos
Ri P.

I was hungry on my drive back home from DC and randomly decided to pull over and visit Pupusa La Familiar on a BUSY Sunday afternoon. So glad I did. It seemed to be a self seating restaurant. Service was prompt, friendly, and efficient, and I got my tamarind juice (fresh, tangy, maybe a tad too sweet for my taste). I ordered two frijoles con queso y loroco (a sort of vegetable, DEFINITELY GIVE IT A TRY) pupusas and a side of plantains. It was a bit of a wait for the food, but it made sense given how the place was teeming with large groups of families. The pupusas were piping hot and delicious, curtido fresh, and the salsa had an extra savory flavor that I hadn't tasted before. The platanos were sweet and delicious as well, but a bit greasy. I left very satisfied and full, and in a good mood due to the laid back and boistrous atmosphere. Definitely worth a try!

Casual pupuseria with dozens of varieties. The beef is especially good. Also full menu besides pupusas. Parking can be tricky.

Is there music Friday/Saturday nights? I love Salvadoran food but some places play music so loud ...! OK for a family? Thanks in advance!

There is music, but it's not loud. The establishment is family oriented... no alcohol tho.

Found this spot through Yelp and after reading all the great reviews, I decided to give it a try…read more One encouraging sign when I first walked in was that the place was pretty full, which told me I came to the right place. I ordered three chicken and cheese pupusas, and they were a great size. I was nearly full after the first two. The flavor was on point. My apologies for my photo because I was already halfway through my third pupusa before I remembered to snap a picture. I also tried the corn tamale, which my wife and I enjoyed a lot. On top of that, I ordered a steak taco, which unfortunately didn't make it into a picture either because I ate it too fast. What stood out to me was the "shell." Instead of the usual flour or corn tortilla, it uses the same masa dough as the pupusa, and I really enjoyed that difference. We finished our meal with the nuegados en miel dulce, something I had never tried before. I was glad I did because it was delicious and a great way to end the meal. Overall, the food and experience were excellent. If you are like me and rely on Yelp reviews to decide where to eat, I highly recommend giving La Casita Pupuseria & Market a visit. You will be well pleased like I was.

Could it be? Someplace where I love the papusas AND the tamales?!…read more I was craving chicken tamales and stumbled across La Familiar...and wished that it could've been sooner. They put a generous amount of chicken that had this delicious red sauce on it. Not sure what it's called but I loved it. They were thick, hot, and spiced beautifully. The elote tamales were, in a word, impeccable. They offered a fried option which was surprisingly delicious. The steamed ones set the bar pretty high yet here we are. Meeting and exceeding. You have the option of w/wo crema. The papusas were fluffy, filled just enough, and came with interesting fillings. I'm used to seeing pork, bean, and cheese. They offered squash (a touch of sweetness), bean and mint (literally blown away with how much I love this), and chipilin (adore). For context, Chipilin tastes like spinach and watercress had a baby. I noticed the cheese having a slight tang, but it wasn't off putting. Just different than other places I've tried. My only "gripe" (if you even want to call it that) was the curtido. It tasted good but something was off. Not off enough where I would avoid it, but it just wasn't the same. This is coming from someone who is extremely picky about that condiment. Not too fond of cabbage so maybe that's why. Now, the best for last...PASTELITOS! These amazing little pockets of happiness are stuffed with either chicken or beef and OMG OMG OMG. Every bite was pure happiness. It kinda reminded me of kibbeh. The handmade tortillas were amazing the next morning with some eggs and ricotta salata. So, if you're deciding on where to eat today, tomorrow, or next week...come here. I promise there will be something you love :D

We go here when our other Pupuseria is packed or closed. I will say this location is harder to get…read morehere and slightly more expensive which is why we tend towards our Pupuseria in Baltimore Avenue. That said, the service here is WAY better- not slow at all, they actually check on you and still use real plates (our place has gone to those paper baskets that they serve like burgers and fries in, which is fine but ...yeah!). In any event, the portion sizes are good and the slaw is awesome, we never have issues with the service but parking can be tight when they're packed. Overall solid and affordable pupusa option.
