I've always seen this place going to Wheaton mall and probably came in once long ago but my kids kept seeing it and wanted to check it out. The food was really amazing and it was really flavorful. My son has been on a weird chili kick and loved the chili here... he says it's the best chili but honestly I think he says that about all chili. I got their scrapple sandwich and it was awesome. I've been on a scrapple kick and been saying that about every place I get scrapple from... and my daughter had the chocolate pancakes which she did not finish there by ate for dinner later that night. I've been visiting the Potomac/Bethesda area for the last week and when I tell you, I could not find a real diner around here that wasn't a chain or outrageously priced lol. I walk into here and it feels just like Home in New Jersey. Hard-working people, making magic at the grill. While, I would've killed to try the pancakes, i'm not having bread right now so that was a bummer but they looked amazing. I can say however I visited this place three times on my trip for breakfast. You pay the right amount of money and you get high-quality, delicious food. The bacon is thick sliced, the omelettes are beautifully prepared, the country ham is a must get! It's sliced fresh right in front of you. I wish I could articulate in a better way how much I enjoyed this place. Just the people in there as well. Meaning no offense, but Potomac is kind of notorious for having a bunch of snobby, uppity people around who kind of seem detached from real life. So coming in here where it was down-home, hard-working people you were surrounded by ---both customer and employees--- I felt way more at home eating here. There was a short wait, and then we were able to grab seats at the counter. They have a small parking lot, but it can be difficult to get to depending on which direction you're coming from. We were able to park in the lot next door and walk over. The waitresses were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They have a system in place to keeps things moving but organized. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes with corned beef hash. Food took a while to be brought out, but business was booming so there was a lot of hustle and bustle in the kitchen. Portions are good for the price. Service was efficient - I ordered the pancakes and it came with pats of butter, and the waitress knew to bring out the syrup without prompting. There was a generous amount of chocolate chips and the pancakes were adequately fluffy. The corned beef hash was good but not as crisp as I would've liked. Service was responsive to requests such as bringing extra napkins, and they were mindful of offering drink refills. Sitting at the counter, I had a view of their fridge and it had their canned Pepsi soda products, Ocean Spray cranberry juice, Safeway apple juice, reused Food Lion jugs of iced tea and lemonade, and other generic orange juice... This place is probably the most underrated gem I've ever visited (and peak diner experience)! Service was great, food came out pretty quick and was super filling and delicious, tons of natural light and seating (super cozy), and the prices were great. I spent $40.58 on two big plates of breakfast plus pancakes, a coffee and hot chocolate, and a toast and english muffin. I just had to tip 30% because it was so worth it. What a great old school diner in Montgomery County. I don't know why, but these types of diners are going the way of the dodo bird. However, I'm glad that Nick's Diner is withstanding the test of time. I stopped by for a quick breakfast and was very pleased with my food. I went with the 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 sausage, and home fries meal/combo (I forgot the official name), which was about $12.50. This definitely is the way to go if you are really hungry. Unbeknowst to me, Nick's Diner has the kind of sorta spongy pancakes, which I LOVE. The employees were super nice, and the service was pretty fast. Fortunately, I visited when the diner was not super busy. Also the price tag for most of the menu items are not super expensive. All in all, I had a wonderful dining experience. A couple of downsides. 1. The parking situation is a bit of a mess. As of now, there is only one way to enter and leave the parking lot from University Blvd. Also, a few of the parking spaces are right at the entrance near University. I assume this could be problematic because some drivers might turn into the parking lot too fast and hit someone who is backing out of the a parking space. 2. This was my first time at Nick's. Met a friend here who says it's been around forever but it's been 20 years since she's been. This is old school charm in an otherwise bustling area. There is a walk up counter and 8 or so tables, perfect for a breakfast alone or with a small (4 or less) group. My friend and I found seats at the counter. The menu is relatively small, but plenty. Everyone is constantly moving behind the counter, it's really a fun sight to see. The cook is amazing with control of two cook tops, including plenty of potatoes. I got the big breakfast, which came with 2 eggs, 2 pieces of meat (bacon or sausage), potatoes, and pancakes. Everything was delightful. We lingered a bit long and were there from approx 9-10:30am on a Sunday. It definitely got busy at times with people waiting, but they were able to sit quickly. The essence is really as a quicker service place but they also didn't rush us out. I can't wait to go back! There is plenty of parking. The trick, though, the lot immediately out front was full - you have to drive towards the back along the hatched area to reveal another lot that was not full. read more

Place is just too cramped with customers elbow to elbow. Never been to a restaurant with boxes all over seat and chairs. I understand that mom and pop greasy spoon diners tend to have more health code violations than chain restaurants but this place needs to invest in a sneeze guard or something for the grill, it's literally 1 foot from customers. I talked to a lady that was taking orders she didn't mention that the prices change or if adding on extra(cheese) to eggs that it was a charge as well. The pancakes are really good. I ordered corn beef hash the first time and my partner got home fries. I immediately regretted it and now always get home fries. Service is super quick. I've only gone on weekdays so not sure what the weekend is like. There's a parking lot that usually has spots.
