***Men's haircut review*** I've visited Pura Vida twice, and I enjoyed my experience each time. Although I prefer a traditional barber, dudes shouldn't hesitate to check this place out. A few things to note: Logistics - Call to set an appointment. - They have parking in the ramp, in the same building, to the right of their location. Upon entry, hang a left and a few dedicated spots. - Everyone wears masks, and they even offer them if you need one that fits better. Their waiting area feels a bit tight, so I would arrive on time to prevent interaction with people waiting for their appointments. About them: - The owner's German Shepard often hangs out there, so if you don't like dogs, don't check it out. - They mainly specialize in women's hair. - They take off the masks of customers when they wash hair. - They primarily carry Kevin Murphy products. Even though I like Pura Vida, a haircut puts a steep dent in my wallet ($50+), so I started going somewhere else. I had an appointment with Glynnis scheduled one week prior specifically through a website that specified a date, time and with whom my appointment was to be scheduled. I scheduled with her based on referrals, and I was already hesitant since I'm very particular on who I have work on my hair. PARKING - if not informed, you will drive around a couple of times before realizing it is in the garage, but there are designated spots for the salon. ACCESS - front door is visible and right off of Mckinney Ave. I arrived on time for my appointment and the young lady at the front desk greeted me right away and asked with whom was my appointment. I told her it was with Glynnis, and she mentioned she had not arrived yet, but would check on her availability. After an obvious phone call, she mentioned that my appointment with Glynnis was supposed to be in Colorado Springs. I corrected her and showed her my confirmation via email that clearly said my appointment was in fact in Dallas on Mckinney Ave. The young lady got back in the phone to speak with Glynnis and told me she's not sure how the miscommunication happened, but Glynnis was on her way back to Colorado Springs, which is an hour behind!! Glynnis obviously had no regard for my appointment and will perhaps have no regard for this review, but for potential new clients - BEWARE! Albeit, the young lady did try to set me up with someone else at the last minute, but was unsuccessful. I started grade school with James and "knew him when," so I was really excited to see what he'd do with my locks. Kaley was very interested in getting to know me and listened intently to what I wanted, what worked and what didn't when it came to styling my hair. The prices are very reasonable for Dallas and for the amount of transformation my hair sees each time I go to see her from mousy brown roots to icy blonde. I went to get a hair cut. Usually it takes about half an hour. However, it took them more than an hour this time and cost me $70. OMG

This was my first time dying my hair. I went off of yelp and google reviews thinking this would be my best chance to feeling great. I scheduled an appointment thinking I was going to get my hair cut, but it was only a consultation which was a waste of time. I had to wait a month and a half for the real deal. I figured he must be worth it if he's booked like that, so I waited. When walking in, I was the only Hispanic, minority customer but still didn't let that bother me. I meet with my stylist Gabe. He sits me down at a different station from my first time present, then asks me (after 1 month and a half) of a reminder of what I wanted which automatically didn't make me feel comfortable and said we'd move when another spot opens up. I didn't like that after we moved, all of the hair stylists were using each others belongings to cut hair. My first impression was I hope all is sanitized. After I showed him pictures or even length of hair with my hands, stopped him to remind him that I did not want a bob hair cut, he still cut my hair shorter than how I specifically asked. I payed with tip around $400 for a wash, what looks like highlights, cut and style. I never knew that was a normal price. Honestly, I didn't even want to question or give negative feedback because I just wanted to hold in my emotions and get out. You're basically paying for location with used items from other people's hair that's not cleaned. I'd highly recommend to go through referrals and portfolios rather than yelp or google. Save your money. **** My response to Mr. James D **** Honestly, I am confused because after reading your message, I checked my bank account and noticed a price change from your salon. Right after my cut, I noticed I was charged $358 not including my 20% gratuity which is around $400, but as I checked my account from reading your comment, it just so happens I was charged $312.60 total. If I was or was not correct about the charge, it's not about the money because if it was I would have brought concern right away. I had a number of complaints but regardless, I waited for a cut that I specifically did not ask for. Even if you claim to have and use the cleanest and most disinfected products and have designated stations per stylist, that was NOT my first impression. It was the exact opposite. I felt uncomfortable and chose not to stop Mr. Gabe or raise question to the manager or owner because I just wanted to get out. This is my chance to warn others that are relying just on google and/ or yelp reviews. Again, my suggestion is to research and ask for the stylists portfolio to thoroughly make a decision before going through with it. I watched the interview of Lacey Bennett and felt like she was a perfect fit for me. She described herself in her video interview and how she was passionate about lifting and toning blondes. I am new to Dallas and have been searching for a great salon. So I called to make an appointment and I was told that Lacey always does consultations first. I was totally fine with the consultation thinking I would invest the time and wait to get my hair done right. Well my consultation was for a whole week later. Lacy & I went over my hair for about 30 minutes. I asked Lacy when she could fit me in her schedule, so I could have an appointment with her. We proceeded to walk to the front desk and she told me that she would CALL me and give me my appointment date & time. At first I found that a little strange and odd but then again I was thinking things might be done differently in Dallas and I needed to be patient. To make this long story really short Lacey NEVER EVER called me. ...I was so disappointed and I tried not to take it personal. I wish that she had just been professional enough to tell me she didn't want to do my hair instead of leading me on. So two weeks later I made an appointment at the FORM SALON and I love my hair. I'm getting tons of compliments on it...thanks to "The Form " I also have been told by several people in the salon business in Dallas that it's not normal for a client to have to wait for a phone just to get their appointment. Please tell Lacey she should NEVER let a Potential client leave without making their appointment first. She should be honest & up front with people who take time to come in for their consultation. To the owner : this doesn't help your salon if she continues to be Rude. You have a beautiful salon and I'm very disappointed it didn't work out ....you were on vacation when I came in. I was able to book my apt via text message with Whitley. She's literally the nicest person ever and incredibly talented. She's also extremely educated and was constantly giving me explanations and tips on my hair and how to style it. She even took the time to show me how to use a wand in my hair to get a beachy wave. I moved to Dallas from Boston, MA in November and had a few bad highlight and lightening attempts before my move. I searched "best colorist in Uptown" shortly after getting settled and was lucky enough to stumble upon the Yelp page for Pura Vida. After scouring the reviews and pictures, I picked up my phone and booked an appointment with Lacy. I could tell by some of the photos posted that she could understand and achieve the natural "bronde" (brown/blonde) I've been trying to get. My first appointment was just before the holidays and I could not have been happier with how the color and cut turned out. It was so natural, but also dimensional and the transition from root to end -- perfectly gradual. Lacy asked me at the beginning of the appointment to describe my desired look; I showed her the pictures I had seen on Yelp, older pictures of my hair when it was "good" and explained what I did and didn't want. She really listened and achieved exactly what I wanted... Lacy's also extremely easy to talk to, nice, funny and attentive. The salon itself is beautiful and customer service, top notch. I love going to get my hair done, just for the experience! I've been back once more this year just for a quick refresh of the root -- I didn't think my color could get better, but somehow it did! I love this salon! Recently relocated from Portland OR and realized after almost 6 yrs I would need to find a new stylist. Someone recommended this salon so I took a chance and scheduled an appointment - gave them the low down on my hair and they paired me up with Gabriel about 2 weeks out. When I showed up for my appointment I met the owner James who was totally down to earth and very welcoming. He actually offered me a glass of wine, water etc and let me try one of his vegetables from his garden! The entire experience felt like I was hanging out with a really close family - they all support each other and make you feel comfortable. Gabriel and I chatted about what I wanted, we did a brief consult, and ended up cutting and coloring my hair. I have a ton of hair. He is the first stylist to ever finish my hair in under 4 hrs (it was less than 3)!The conversation and experience were amazing and my hair has been receiving compliments ever since. To begin my story, and my review... let's just say I was traumatized. Incredibly traumatized. I had moved from DFW to Boston, a year before, and had already lost my hair stylist before that because she moved down to Houston. I didn't get my hair cut before the move because I figured I could wait and really "DO" the research to find a stylist in Boston. I went to the most uppity place you can imagine, in a loft, with a bald headed man who cuts hair and has been featured on MTV makeovers... pretentious, I know, but I was scared, and the place had great reviews, plus I loved what he did with my friends hair. ... I walked in and immediately felt ugly... I walked out feeling even uglier... AND unstylish... and spent 6 months trying to grow out my hair... he had clipped some kind of wings into them too... have I mentioned I paid a crap ton of money for a bad cut? It was horrifying. So, 6 months later I'm going home for Christmas, and end up begging James to cut my hair on Christmas Eve morning, because I love what he did with my friends hair, and I felt I could trust him. I had met him once before, and he's done such an amazing job on my girl friends hair. She's got super curly locks and it always sits right and looks damn good. I walked in and felt beautiful. I was pampered and damn near petted. Everyone seemed happy to see me, and it wasn't like I was the ugly girl that managed to get an appointment because I had a large enough credit on my card to pay for it... the wonders of James and Pura Vida. I was not sorry!!! This is the best experience I've ever had in a hair salon!!! I felt beautiful from the inside out... like even my skin and personality were special, not just "great hair"... It was the best cut I've ever had. They taught me how to style it, and it's been easy to do! They took their time with me and walked me through everything, and just treated me like a loved human being. It's got to be some kind of philosophy. Getting a hair cut, splittin' your wig, trimmin' the mane....hair coloring, hiding the gray's, the ridding of roots....etcetera etcetera etcetera....all VERY serious and important events in all women's lives. Nothing to joke about....i say this because i have personally experienced the life-altering, become a hermit for a month, altogether BAD hair cut (and color). It was SO bad, I cut my own hair for 3 years afterword....actually got pretty good at it, too. However, after becoming a true Dallas socialite and downtown dweller, I knew it was time to overcome this fear and seek out the true talent that SURELY was inhabiting the Dallas metroplex. I must say, although it did take a few trial and errors, ladies (and gents, too) I have found it :) And for all you fellow victims of the SuperCuts disaster, I will gladly pass the tip along. Pura Vida Salon is located on Travis Street in the Knox/Henderson area.....one of my favorite areas anyway (there's a MAC store over there...im a MAC nerd....shut up). Go west on knox....left on Travis....its right there above Cafe Madrid....from the front of that building you only see the door with the logo on it, enter and head upstairs to the cozy hair haven. No need to knock once you get to their door, just walk right in..you'll be greeted with smiles and salutations as if you have been their regular customer for years. It is small, cozy & welcoming, and decorated to parallel that chic style that is uptown Dallas. There are 3 hair masters...I recommend all of them. Even though only 2 have done what they do to my 'do....I've personally seen the results of the third's skills and wouldnt hesitate to let him work his magic on me. The owner, James, is by far the coolest guy ever....and I'm truly impressed with the way he has built this modest empire....he's knows what he's doing and how to keep people coming back. I feel like part of the family when I'm there....and have heard the exact same report from all my friends I have sent to them. EXAMPLE: Black Tie event....was told i was needing to attend days prior....had to get the outift, accessories....AND OF COURSE THE HAIR! It was a Dallas Fashion Association event...so the typical "up-do" would not suffice....I call in a panic with this emergency...they work it around, and James ends up comingin at 8:30am just to make a masterpiece out of my hair, which led to many compliments and "Who does your hair???"'s...all with a smile on his face....for that I am forever grateful. The prices are beyond reasonable, and I have never left there with anything less than an "Oh my God I love you" reaction. All while enjoying a glass of wine or coffee while they do their handy work. James DeFrange is incredibly talented. The first time you go in he sits down with you and he asks you questions about your hair, styling, products, etc. He seriously spends 20 minutes learning about what you like and asks about what you want to lean. Yes, I said learn! He teaches you how to style like a pro. If you don't get it the first time, it's not a problem because he will do whatever it takes to teach you. This is coming from someone who couldn't use a curling iron before I found James! When it comes to cuts and color he is a true expert. James knows what looks good and understands what you like and want. Every time you go in he sits down and asks you what you have been enjoying about your style, what you might want to try differently, and if you have had any challenges with your hair. He really spends a lot of time with you and cares! I recently started using color on my hair and to no surprise have loved it every time. If you haven't tried balayage, DO IT! It looks SO natural and is so easy to maintain. People seriously thought I went on vacation and it was from the sun. I almost don't want to review since it will let the secret out. I've known James since I was knee high to a grasshopper. 10 years later and he is now the only man I trust cutting my hair, and please note that I don't even live in Dallas anymore. I continually get asked who cut my hair since it just looks that good. Sorry Denver, I have to outsource this hair cut. I quit asking for a cut that I think will work she he knows my hair better than I do. James is the master of being able to give me an awesome cut that I can handle (trust me, i am not talented when it comes to doing my hair) even on those early mornings when I have to get into work before the sun comes up. Everyone has bad hair days, right? I don't. Really, I don't. Since Kinome has been doing my color and cut, my hair always looks great. Not good, great. I am now a month into my cut and color and people stop me (even strangers!) and tell me how great my hair looks. Strangers!! The color is absolutely gorgeous and the cut is perfect. Kinome has taken the time to get to know me and my lifestyle and has created a haircut that works for me. I scheduled a hair cut and Brazilian blowout at Pura Vida Salon because of the fantastic deal they offered on Buywithme.com. I live almost two hours outside of Dallas, so I was hoping it would be worth the trip. I figured I would only get what I paid for, and that they may be rushed to get me done since I was getting a discount. I was SO pleasantly surprised!!!! All three stylist's were so nice and really did a fantastic job.! Holly did my cut, which looks great. Meagan did my Brazilian blowout, and which was a dream come true (my hair was so frizzy and unmanageable before). I have never written a review in my life, but these guys deserved recognition for all of their hard work and dedication to true customer service. They really make you feel like family. They squeezed me in (thank you, whomever cancelled) and being new to Dallas, I've been looking for a place that can manage short hair. In a fun way. Without making me look old. Gabriel is my new guy... he listened to what I liked and didn't like, he asked a lot of questions and bam... I got what I wanted even when I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted. I will go back for sure. The only thing I'm not a fan of... the cost of their products. I like their products - they work well, they smell good, etc. - but they were more expensive than that haircut and color! I may have to go back to my old products, but I will still see Gabriel! read more

James has made a believer out of me. I'm the simple type... Spend a total of 3 minutes blow drying, no product, sometimes run out of the house dripping wet. My hair has to be in a ponytail all day every day, so needless to say, it gets neglected. But ...James and his crew have helped me rejuvenate and revive my hair, and now I get compliments everywhere I go. They have cut it better, and taught me how to take care of it, and how to make it look good in a ponytail. They even have classes that teach you how to style your hair! My highlights have always been bland, and they have suggested a few things - low lights, toner, etc. that make it look much better - more depth, shinier...AWESOME! I've been to a number of salons all over Dallas in the last 10 years, and I won't go anywhere else now. Edit - I typed the above review in 07/13, and I can say over a year later, I still feel the same. I absolutely love the friendly, relaxing atmosphere, and professionalism. Every time I go in, they ask for feedback on how my cut and color has been so they can adjust accordingly. James makes adjustments for each season (brighter in the summer, more low-lights in the fall), and stays on top of my needs. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

Gabriel cut my hair on stolen lunch break pamper session and did he do a phenomenal job or what?! it was relaxed but efficient (in and out in an hour exactly), it was unique (he flat ironed my curly hair first to get a perfectly even cut) and it was exactly what I didn't even know i wanted- a refresher without a major change. I texted for an appointment which was easy and efficient. I parked in their reserved parking spot in the mckinney uptown building next door. And, i enjoyed my refreshing beverage! I waited too long to find a hairstylist in Dallas, but now I've found a place i will go back to. read more

I told the desk person I was on a tight budget. She gave me a price on the haircut for this stylist. He did a pretty good job. Then I went to pay, and it was much more than I was told. The desk lady said no it was $65 and up? Huh? And then she added a "salon tax." That's a first. The place is also hard to find and difficult parking. My 65 cut turned out to be $80 and then add the tip. Look -- I was shopping around for a new stylist. He was pretty good, but I wasn't comparing him to who else is out there at $80 -- and that's bait and switch. If I am going to pay $80 for a cut, I need to know that. So my complaint is that they need to be straighforward about their charges, and that "salon tax" is just plain sneaky. read more

I have been having my hair cut and colored by James DeFrange for 7 years, he does excellent work. I came to James after a very bad color experience at an Aveda salon in Uptown and I could not have been more happy. I especially appreciate how he thoroughly consults with you and teaches you how to replicate that salon fresh style at home. James is also open to suggestions and new things you might recommend yet will be necessarily honest if required. Best haircut and color experience I have ever had. First off, I had not colored my hair in three years nor had it professionally cut in over a year. I was very nervous to say the least. Then I met my stylist James who was over the moon amazing. He immediately put me at ease with his professionalism, friendliness, and extensive knowledge of hair and color. The way he took time to speak to me about my hair and what would work specifically for me was incredible. I have never met someone with such a mastery and passion for cut and color.
