It was hard and they tell you it takes a few classes to really get the moves down but I did the best that I could and had fun working out with friends. Add me to the "skeptical at first" group. After my first class, I wasn't sold on Pure Barre, but was determined to make the most of my introductory unlimited month for $100.00, because once I set a goal, I'm determined to see it through. My dislike wasn't just because of the awkwardness everyone experiences during the first class (though admittedly, I felt like I sucked at everything at first, heh). It was because I considered the prices for regular classes to be pretty steep for a class that doesn't even last an hour. Not to mention the Pure Barre branded stuff everywhere (which of course is typical of any gym franchise), the cheesy pop music and the fact that the stretching didn't seem to be enough (you can stretch on your own, obviously). I thought it was really just a glorified exercise class that you can get anywhere and didn't really see what the fuss was. And now after 10 classes, I'm hooked on the burn. They say that it takes about 3 classes to get the precision of the moves down (think tiny, intense movements) and that's about right. Now, I find myself doing these exercises just about anywhere. It's strangely addictive to clench your muscles like this. It's a fast, intense workout. Time may seem to stand still as your muscles are shaking, yet it goes by so rapidly that the class is over in the blink of an eye. You may feel that it's so fast that surely this isn't enough of a workout and what the hell did you just spend 25 bucks a class for? But it is. It's a great way to tone that body up (though you'd definitely want to supplement the workout with cardiovascular exercises to keep yourself in tip top shape). People liken it to a combination of yoga, pilates and ballet. I actually don't really see anything too much in common with yoga. Ballet, absolutely, for you're standing at a barre doing pliés which totally kill your thighs. I've never taken pilates before, so I can't remark on that. The teachers are great overall, and of course you will like some more than others. I tend to prefer the teachers that give you some kind of countdown and verbal encouragement throughout. Once the teacher becomes silent, people are more apt to rest, which you don't want to do b/c working the muscles to fatigue is kind of the point (and many will tell you this). Other good stuff: the studio is spotless, fans are plentiful, and the staff is nice. FYI, the price goes down if you buy 5, 10, and 20 sessions at a time. I just bought my next 10 classes. This is a great supplement to yoga and cardio workouts. I yearn for a gym in this city that offers both good classes and equipment, but until there is, I'll be working out at my bare bones gym, Pure Barre and various yoga studios When you compare Pure Barre to yoga, the price is kind of astronomical. (At Life yoga, 90 minute classes as low as 8-10 dollars a pop) but they do have promotional specials and in March, if you take 20 classes you are eligible for a month of unlimited at 100.00, which is pretty sweet. read more

I attended 9 Pure Barre classes in 3 weeks while on the New Client Special, and it wasn't for me. I believe that if you're *able* to follow along with the workout, and you go regularly, that you will see results. However, I'm not at a high enough fitness level for these classes! Others have described it as "pure hell", and I agree. They have you doing planks, wall sits, and very demanding strength moves for extended periods. I can't do it, and there are no suggested modifications. One particular instructor would spend way more time coaching me than I would like. She was trying to perfect my form, while I was struggling to hold any semblance of the prescribed position. I told her, "I hear you, but I can barely do this," and she didn't take the hint. The last class I attended, I felt like she was just bothering me over and over. Less importantly: - It was not a fun vibe. People didn't speak before classes, which is awkward when you have to arrive 15 mins in advance, and the wall's a giant mirror. - There are no showers or locker room, and only one single toilet. read more

Love this place. Kicks my butt into gear.. and QUICK. These ladies know what they're doing. Every day I leave there, after a mere 50 min of intense work.. my body aches. That great just-worked-out-I-kinda-wanna-die-but-it-feels-so-good kinda ache. And you definitely feel it the next day. My favorite thing about this place. Efficiency. Now, there's not so say there's anything wrong with other places.. especially some of the yoga places that start a little late.. go a little long, just going with the flow. Sometimes you're feeling the vibe, and the teacher is just taking you along for that ride. However. Sometimes.. I need to get in, get to work, and get out. Especially on days when time is tight. This is where Pure Barre shines. Quick and TOUGH. And lots of times throughout the day to get in. Pure Barre found muscles that I forgot about.. and neglect. If you want to whip it into shape fast, I'd check them out. And it books up quick for some time slots a few days in advance.. but utilize their waitlist.. You can cancel an hour before without penalty, so the day of, the waitlist tends to move a lot (and they'll text you if you get a spot). A+ in my book. The only con, esp for poor grad students? The price. But worth it. And they have discounts if you buy packages for students.. so we all win! read more

I wonder why more people have not reviewed this place....maybe b.c the workout is pure hell? But pure hell in a pleasantly good way, in that I can feel the burn for days after each workout. I moved here a couple days ago and bought a one month unlimited pass for $100. Pretty expensive, but I figured, it would be worth it since I won't be spending money going out to eat or drink by myself. Anyway, the studio is pretty modern and nicely done. Some of the instructors are better at catering to newbies who don't have a formal pilates background. The workouts are effective and, afterwards, you feel accomplished. I can already tell that my running is improving from the strength I've added to my legs and core. I would definitely recommend this to someone who can afford the price and/or who needed to fit into a specific item of clothing by a certain deadline (pageant contestant, brides, snorkelers). Hopefully, by the time my pass expires, I'll have met more people, and I'll have a six pack to slowly obscure with alcohol and Juan's Flying burrito-derived fat tissue:) read more

I have a love-hate relationship with Pure Barre. I started coming here about eight months ago, when I purchased the unlimited 1-month pass for beginners ($100). By the end of that month, I was hooked. HOOKED, I tell you. I love the fact that they have 6 AM classes, I love the upbeat trendy music, the teachers are fantastic and so fit that it's inspirational, and (if you keep up with it regularly) the results are pretty much guaranteed. It's a killer workout crammed into 55 minutes, which is ideal for a woman who wants to break a real sweat on a regular basis but is stressed for time. But yikes, the classes are overpriced. I dread the day when I run out of my class pass before a new promotion begins, because (although I would miss it!) I refuse to pay full price for these classes. The promotions usually discount the classes 20-30%, which is just enough for me to convince myself that they are worth the price. A pro and con in one: Part of the genius of Pure Barre is its repetitiveness. Once you get the routine down, it becomes, well, routine -- not so much easier, but it feels more natural and you feel like you are achieving more with each workout. But it can also get boring the more you do it. I wish they'd mix things up a little more while maintaining the basic structure of the class. I also wish the class sizes were somewhat smaller, because when the sessions are full, you are ALL up in each others' business. It is unrealistic to expect every woman in a full class to cram up to the same side of the room to plie (even in one inch increments!) against the mirrored barre. A minor complaint about the Uptown studio: There is some sort of leak or moisture problem that makes the place even more humid than your average New Orleans gym (which is HUMID). The numerous ceiling fans do help, but I'd urge them to resolve this problem sooner rather than later. My summary: Pure Barre is fantastic for your abs/rear/arms/thighs AND watch...not so fantastic for your wallet. read more

Okay, so after the first class I wasn't sure if I was going back but about 20 minutes after the class. I felt great! Not only did I return, I bought a package. I've been telling all my friends about this place. You can feel the burn and you know that it is working. I like the instructors walking around and making sure you're doing the movements correctly and making sure you get the most out of the class. Even after 5 classes I've noticed a slight difference. That makes me want to continue working harder. There are areas (my abs) that need more work than others, but it's a total body workout while you're in there. On the days I do Pure Barre I try to walk and then run on my off days. Everyone has been friendly and they make an effort to remember your name. I liked that. read more

I have been to Pure Barre classes all over the Midwest and west coast, and the New Orleans location is by far my favorite! The front desk staff and the managers are so friendly. After my first visit they called to check in on how my first class went and also emailed again a few days later. They were also very helpful when I wanted a pair of pants that they sold but were out of stock. They searched there other store and put them on hold and shipped them to the New Orleans location for me. Seriously amazing customer service. Inside the studio also always smells lovely and they have the cutest retail work out gear. The instructors are also great. I love Anna's class! She is always helpful and giving hands on assistance to make sure you get everything out of the class. She also has a great positive energy which is awesome for those 5:30am classes. I really like working out at Pure Barre. I've added to my workout schedule once a week. I like that it's a combination of ballet, yoga, and pilates. The class is fun and fast paced....a little bit awkward your first 2 sessions, but still effective. I, too, feel the burn for a couple of days. My only complaint is the price. It's hard to justify a monthly membership pass for someone like me who likes to mix things up, workout-wise, from day to day. If you can afford it, go for it!! read more

Recent Pros -The addition of the double tube has made the thighs even harder and has also added some challenge to sections that used to feel pointless. -They have acquired and retained some solid teachers in recent years. Teachers who do the same exact exercises class after class seem to be a thing of the past. -they have always had a wide range of body types in teachers (and students). While most of the pictures on the walls are of young women, I notice Pure Barre (in general) is starting to use attractive middle age women in its promotional photographs online. Recent Cons -They recently decided not to let anyone in late (at all) for the sake of injury prevention. I think the majority of women who do Pure Barre take it very seriously. And if they are late, there is probably a good reason. -If you wash the grip socks (even once) or walk non-carpeted floor (even once), they lose their stick. Don't even think of complaining! -I've come to the conclusion that $25 classes (in general) should include amenities, (like uncrowded storage space and showers). I would love it if Pure Barre would downsize its boutique and convert it to a locker room. The hairspray and feminine products in the bathrooms are nice but not enough. Ok, so I'm the first one to admit: I LIKE to look good but I LOVE eat bad :) So in addition to running and walking around in heels (yes ladies it does wonders for the calves) When it comes to my workouts they need them to be specific, quick result bearing, upbeat and fun. And that just is what I get at Pure Barre Nola. The 55 min routine is a great mix of yoga, ballet, core training, stretching, and pilates all rolled into one impact workout. The trainers are all super knowledgable and friendly: which is a rarity these days and are always there to provide support, answers questions and yes even hear you complain how sore you are the next day ;) The facility is brand new, clean and has a great location on 3900th block of Magazine St. There is also a great retail area with cool workout closes, grippes (recommended for your class) and my fav hair ties ever: Emi Jay's. Every time I leave PB, I feel energized and like I've accomplished something such is a reward in and of itself. The first few times are rough, I'm not gonna lie to you but you soon get the hang of it and definitely feel "the burn". Jenn, the owner, has done a great job of setting up specials for clients including your first class free, $100 unlimited for a month, baby bounce back and summer specials, etc. I find it's easy to purchase classes and use them as I need. Some reviews complain about the cost of Pure Barre after the specials, but the way I see it you no longer need a gym membership, which is around the same amount. You get what you pay for: great personalized workouts in a clean, safe, and enjoyable atmosphere. You should definitely give PB Nola or Mandeville a try, your first time is free! I decided to try Pure Barre based on their new client special- a month of unlimited classes for 100$. I was instantly hooked. You get a pretty awesome fullbody workout in just 55 minutes. The classes are geared more towards women, focusing on the problem areas- abs, thighs, and 'seat'. Although one time there was a dude in my class. The instructors are all very nice and help with correcting your form. The front desk girls are also really friendly and the studio always smells of the delicious candles they burn. I would love to continue taking PB classes, but it's EXPENSIVE. If i see a good Groupon deal I'll get it, but otherwise it's hard for me to afford it. I definitely saw results after going almost every day. You feel your buns and thighs shaking and burning! The classes are done to loud music, which usually helps you focus on other things besides your cramping buttocks... They also have an AWESOME schedule with at least 8 classes a day, so there's no excuse not to be able to make it. I will definitely be back to take more PB classes once my checkbook can afford it ;) If you go- easy street parking on Magazine. This was my first Pure Barre class, but I've been wanting to try it for a while. Finding myself in NOLA the day after all of my Thanksgiving day eating, seemed like the perfect time. They were amazing. Beautiful people and wonderfully helpful. Knowing it was my first time, the instructor carefully explained each movement to me. She was awesome. My legs were shaking like crazy and looking around I could tell I was amongst regulars, but no one made me feel out of place. Great experience. Pure Barre, located on NOLA's fabulous Magazine Street, is the ideal workout for someone that doesn't like or gets bored with the typical treadmill, cardio, etc! A Barre workout is 55 min of choreography with a yoga, stretching, ballet type mixture. Each class has a different teacher, but it's hard to suggest which trainer to go with because they are ALL fabulous! Jenn the owner did a great job selecting her instructors and teaching them how to make her clients happy. Some awesome perks about this Pure Barre location is the times of the classes, the times offered can easily fit any schedule, times start early in the morning until the evening and there are even classes on Sunday for people who need that weekend workout! Something else to note is the studio is new, clean, and a great size. They never allow to many people to a class time, to be sure everyone has enough space to get the correct workout in! Pure Barre also has a retail area that sells clothes, hair ties, grippes (recommended for classes), & even Pure Barre DVDs! Yeah, the first few times are tough and you probably want to kick yourself for doing it, but after those first few classes, it continues to feel AMAZING and you watch your body transform! You will leave there with energy and feeling accomplish. The first class is free, and a new client special is $100 which gives you UNLIMITED classes for a month. They also have summer specials, a baby bounce back, and a pure barre bride deal also! While after your package ends, the price seems a little high - if it works for you, then do it! Depending on which classes package you do, it works out to be the price of a gym membership, plus any classes you used to do at your gym. I used to have a membership at a gym but now it seems even more boring to just run on a treadmill, when going to Pure Barre shows me faster results! Pure Barre is the best workout, hand down! I like that the instructors know you by name and encourage you throughout the class. The environment is sweet...great lighting, music and a friendly staff. It's seriosly addicting, especially after seeing really fast results. Before becoming a member, I never had definition in my abs like this...and this is post-baby! Infact, I've found toned muscles that I didn't even know I had. This is the ultimate workout for those who seek overall self-improvement. My energy has sky-rocketed and my confidence level is on 10! I've waited 3 months to write this review. Not gonna lie, I'm hooked on this exercise. Sometimes splurges are hard to justify. However, when the ROI comes in the form of compliments from people who haven't seen you in a while, you must ask yourself..."How much is a nice ass worth to me?" Pure Barre is a strength training and toning exercise that incorporates dance, pilates and yoga into one studio workout Using a ballet bar for support, you lift your own body weight in explosive moments and then stretch everything out to create lean muscle. The studio is impeccably clean and welcoming...vital, since showing up is half the battle. The instructors are upbeat, encouraging and will make sure you don't get lost in the shuffle. Be warned though...they will challenge you! I have become noticeably more flexible since starting Pure Barre. For the first time in my life, I can do the splits. It has also helped with my balance (I am a regular runner, but also a clumsy fool who has sprained my left ankle three times). I'm a pretty busy person and Pure Barre has not only fit nicely into my schedule, but has helped me relieve some stress. When i'm in class, I'm 100% focused on the workout. I'm not thinking about tomorrow, or everything I have to do...I just want to the burn to cease! Pure Barre offers the strength training that so many women steer away from in exercise (even though this is what will deliver visible results!). My gripes are small. The classes has been full lately and Pure Barre has done a great job of scheduling more available classes and encouraging patrons to make reservations online. However, they also threaten to charge you for missing your reservation. If they're going to do that, I expect things to be pretty flawless. There are certain instructors who cannot, for the life of them, start class on time. This is especially inconvenient in the morning before work, where an extra 10 minutes makes a huge difference. Also, class has been cancelled without notice and the studio has not offered any sort of compensation. These instances are rare, but also can look a lot worse when you woke up at 5:30 am and you're paying $180/month for this luxury. (At the end of the day, it IS a luxury. These packages ain't cheap and it's too bad that many people will steer away from Pure Barre due to the price tag). All in all..Pure Barre has done a lot for me and I would highly recommend looking into it if you need an extra push in your fitness goals. read more

I know I tend to either rate places with five stars or one, but when I come on here to write a review for a place, I either love it or hate it, and I LOVE this place!! First of all, as soon as you walk in the door, you are made to feel at home. The staff, when they aren't teaching, are working the front desk, and they are always smiling and energetic-just what I need before a good, hard workout! There is a great retail shop off to the left when you walk in, complete with comfy clothes and other accessories you would want to work-out (and look good) in. One of my absolute FAV things about this place is that although you are asked to reserve your spot before hand, you can do it online, and it is easy to add or cancel days (and you can plan weeks ahead). Just what I need as a busy grad student and mother! The atmosphere is comfortable, and this carries over into every room of this dance studio. Let's get to the good stuff. The workout room is a perfect mixture of everything you want at every point of your workout. The lights are brighter in the beginning of your session, and near the end when you are stretching and cooling down, they dim. The music is upbeat in the very beginning (and so are the instructors-love that about this place), and slows down near the end. There are also large fans above you for when you are working up a sweat (and you are sure to!). They have cubbies for your things off the room, and thanks to one class being there at a time, you don't have to worry about people taking your things like at a gym. There is also a separate bathroom just for us near the cubbies right off the dance floor-LOVE!! P.S., make sure to bring a water bottle so you can stay hydrated! Back to the instructors. I haven't had one instructor there that I have disliked. Every single instructor comes from a dance background, and some were even Saintsations! Mandy is the instructor I usually have (I go with a large group of friends on a certain night of the week - Yes, we make it a big to-do!), and you can tell she really enjoys what she is doing. If I can't go that night with everybody else, I make it a point to go during the day, and all the instructors are first-class. Even the "subs" are regular instructors from their other studios! Whether it's a group of four you are with, or the class is full, you will be given plenty of attention. As for the workout, it is unlike anything I have ever done. Sure, I could go run six miles at Audubon nearby, but this class really sculpts muscles that running can't seem to get. Even when I was training in the weeks leading up to my last race, this class made me sore in places I had long forgotten about (hello, I had a baby!). I had decided long ago that gyms weren't for me, and this workout proves why. It takes the benefits of all those machines you have to sit at when at the gym and gives it to you with great music in a 55 min session. I have had friends come with me who have never ran a day in their life, and they love this to, so no worries if you haven't worked out in a long time. It's OK to feel the burn (AND YOU WILL!!)!! The instructors are helpful and help you refine your movements as needed. There are modifications to movements for every level. It's amazing how tiny little movements can make all the difference, and it's amazing how you will feel instantly when you have the movement down. It burns, but it's oh so good!!!! Simply put, gyms are a thing of the past. The location is second-to-none (Magazine-drool), the instructors are second-to-none, and they always seem to have specials with their prices, so there's a lot of room for fitting it into your budget. Additionally, I always feel good when I leave. Case-in-point; After one week of going every day with an unlimited special I took advantage of in the beginning of my membership, my hubby noticed by abs were tighter. That's all the motivation I needed to make this place part of my weekly routine. I am a NOLA native and this is one of the best things to come to New Orleans in a long time! I'm coming up on my 5 year Pure Barre anniversary. I require a motivation and accountability that a gym doesn't give me, but Pure Barre continues to keep me coming back for more all of these years later. I'll admit that when I first started taking classes I found it intimidating that there are no beginner classes. You may take your first class alongside someone who is taking, say, her 750th class. However, that's one of the things that I've come to love about Pure Barre-- it is for everyone! You work within your own limits and continue to push those limits at your own pace. On that note, there's a good chance that you won't absolutely love your first class. It takes like 5-10 classes to really get a feel for it. The new client special is a perfect opportunity to get a true sense of the technique and see the results. And you will see results! Bonus points for: a very friendly staff , plentiful & unmetered street parking and a clean studio. read more

I love Pure Barre, and I owe these ladies a lot for whipping me into shape. The prices of the classes make them pretty inaccessible for most of the population- I wish they had better discount packages and sales. Also, the items they sell in the boutique are nice but extremely expensive. $90 for spandex pants? $55 for a wife beater? I'd love to support them if they'd reduce their prices.... There are some teachers who are much stronger than others. Some teachers are unfortunately very confusing, and offer too many movements that are no-impact or ouch-ouch-this-can't-be-good-for-me-impact. The best teachers deliver a hard, steady, and juicy workout the whole time. Big complaint: Switch up the music! For those of us going regularly, those mind-numbing songs that play every day are ruining our workout! Make the music count! :) read more

I don't have much time to work out but this place is a must for me at least once a week. I feel accomplished after each class and it gets easier every class I take. Really like it thus far. Have been doing it for about 2 months, and it's been a good experience. I'm generally a cardio/heavy lifting kind of girl, and definitely not a group fitness class kind of girl, but I needed to shake up my routine so I tried it. I'm glad I did. I get such perverse pleasure out of being able to do moves I wasn't able to initially and seeing my form improve. I need to find a way to incorporate more lifting and cardio back into my routine to even things out, but for now I really like the classes. Not sure if I've seen an appreciable difference in my body, but that's me, not the classes. I have found that my core is feeling stronger, even if I don't see any changes. The prices are high, but if you keep a lookout for sales and specials, they can be quite reasonable (about $13 or so per class if you hit the right sale!). Glad I tried something new! read more

Went here yesterday for my first class and boy was I blown away! The studio itself was very nice, great location with plenty of street parking not too far away. The staff were super friendly and the class itself pushed me to my limits. As a beginner I had to take tons of rest breaks and really had a hard time keeping up. But by the time I got home from class I was so excited about the tough workout I just had, I promised my self to do the unlimited monthly plan, starting in July...I need a few weeks to get in shape for these classes! As a pilates/yoga lover and a long time ballet dancer, this was a little bit of all those things but much more intense. I think I am officially addicted to the burn. read more

There is a dress code if you want to be allowed to go to a class that you pay for. You can't wear shorts. They claim it's to ensure your muscles are getting enough heat. I call BS. It's because they're worried about people accidentally exposing themselves in the crotch area to the other classmates, or maybe they discriminate against people in shorts. It's so ridiculous. Also, while the studio is clean and new and the music great and the instructor I had was enthusiastic, the whole class is nothing but repetitive tiny pulses. Too boring. I get that there is a reason for targeting certain muscle groups. But it's just not enough variety for me. One can only take so much repetition before one goes crazy. Call it a thousand tiny paper cuts, as the expression goes. This place, with its pretentious dress policy and repetitious workout for a whole hour, is a place I wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

First, I love that Pure Barre offers a 6 am class so I can go before work! All classes are the same level difficulty so just pick one that fits your schedule. They do have student/military discounts (15% for students), as well as reasonable package deals. It's not cheap but it's a great full body workout squeezed into 55 minutes! There is stretching involved but don't confuse Pure Barre and yoga....they are not the same and I wouldn't substitute one for the other (do both!). Bring socks (they are required), and a water bottle. You can buy the grippy socks too if you like, which help doing planks and those sorts of movements on the carpet. The class is not easy but it is a really great way to start the day and I love being sore after. The music is picked to match the workout and it's really upbeat and fun, not overbearing pop music like you hear in some gyms and fitness studios. The instructors were all friendly and helpful, offering tips and adjustments as needed but not pushing me beyond what my body can do. I went to my first class with Anna and she introduced herself immediately, remembered my name and made me feel comfortable despite being the only beginner in the class. She encouraged me to ask questions after class and answered them all. read more

Great workout! Excellent atmosphere and the instructors are great also (especially Jen and Randi). If you can put this in your schedule at least once or twice a week you will notice a change in your body and feel accomplished each time you walk out of the door. I just started here with the New Client special at $100 month. I know it doesn't sound cheap but I just finished 10 weeks of boot camp that was twice that amount. My problem with the boot camp is that it has started to bulk my muscles, and has so much running. I actually already run on my own, so I was looking for something more pilates-based to lengthen my muscles and give me strength and flexibility. This fit perfectly. Despite the fact I'm in relatively good shape already, these workouts are kicking my butt into a slimmer sleeker shape. I can tell the difference after only 5 classes, and am looking forward to more. I feel a great sense of accomplishment at the end of each class, particularly when I've pushed through muscles shaking. The moves look pretty, but they're surprisingly difficult. You get a burn, but you don't drip sweat. The instructors are good, each has their own style. Some cater more to making sure you have the correct form so the exercises are the most efffective, others are better about pushing you through more challenging series. The music is nice and well-timed, although I think there could be more variety. I do wish they had more early (6am) classes for those who work during the day and like to get a workout in before heading to the office. I definitely plan on continuing this even when the new client special expires. I think the extra cost is definitely worth it. It's easy to reserve a spot and make your own schedule, and I feel graceful and strong trotting through my day in clothes that fit even better than before. I really recommend giving this a shot for at least one class to see if you like it. read more

As an ex-dancer I've been to my fair share of barre classes, and the classes here are pretty standard as far as barre classes go. Unfortunately though, the experiences I've had here have definitely been more negative than positive due to the dress code policy.The first class I went to I was sent scrambling to find socks in the trunk of my car to avoid paying $17 for socks there (I'd been to Barre 3 and Romney Barre in NOLA, and neither studio required socks so I didn't expect to need them here) and because it was more important to enforce this dress code aspect than to make sure I was all set for class, I never had a chance to go over the waiver or expectations (including other dress code aspects!) with a staff member that day. This morning I was planning to meet friends there for class and walked into the studio and was told I had to either go home or buy $110 leggings from the retail store because the spandex mid thigh-length shorts I was wearing weren't allowed. Instead of being able to work out that morning, I slunk into the studio where my friends had already saved a spot for me and explained to them that I was going home because I wasn't allowed to take the class. As I watched the class I'd been planning to attend start without me, I asked a staff member why I couldn't take the class in shorts- I explained that I was happy to wipe down and clean any equipment that touched my legs, and they said the reason pants were necessary was "to preserve body heat." I pointed out that not only was it June in Southern Louisiana where the heat and humidity were already stifling at 10 AM, but many women in the class were wearing leggings with large mesh cutouts that would hardly preserve body heat any better than my shorts. The staff member simply stated that it was a corporate policy in response. I've done my time in customer service industries and I understand that sometimes as an employee, your hands are tied; while I recognize that this was what the girls at the studio had to do, I didn't feel like the attitude was appropriately apologetic. Instead, there was definitely more of an implication that I was at fault for not following a rule I didn't know about rather than an acknowledgement that they had embarrassed and inconvenienced a customer due to a corporate policy that transcends logical reasoning. What's more frustrating to me is that the pass I have currently is only good for a week and although I couldn't come in today because they told me I had to leave, they said they were unable to extend the pass by one day, which I had thought would be a reasonable solution. As I mentioned before, the classes are pretty standard as far as barre in New Orleans goes, and the difference is that other studios here buy in to the hospitable culture in this city, and this is the only studio where I've experienced this sort of negativity. read more

First, the booking on the app is the easiest time I have ever had throughout the years of scheduling classes with different fitness studios. The actual workout is 55 minutes that goes by quick due to the upbeat music! Light on the joints that still has your muscles shaking and sore in a good way for a day or two! A friend introduced me to the Pure Barre classes about a year ago! I'm a total addict now!! Love everything about it!!

Pure Barre is hands down the best workout I have ever done! I went for a month straight last year when I bought my $100 new member package but then stopped going after the package was over because I couldn't afford it as I am a broke college student. Now that I am back on the pure barre train I don't know why I ever left. The work out is geared specifically for women's problem areas and after only a week of classes I am noticing a change. It is also completely addicting and it makes lazy, far from athletic me, jump out of bed and race to make the 8 am classes. I am the kind of person who runs one day then won't go for three months. You will spend 75% of the class looking like an absolute fool due to the amount of shaking you do thanks to your muscles fatiguing. However when you look at your legs after just a week and are able to actually notice a difference, it makes a world of a difference. Yes the classes are expensive, but if you make the most out of the package I think it is totally worth it. It is basically yoga, pilates, and ballet all in one class. All the instructors are great but my three favorites are definitely Jennifer (the owner of Pure Barre), Mandy (she really pays attention to all of the class participants even though I have never been to a class that wasn't packed), and Alli (if you really want to get your ass kicked today). If they could transform my body so quickly and change my attitude about working out they can do anyone. read more

I wanted to love Pure Barre. I really, really, really wanted to love Pure Barre. I moved to New Orleans from a city where Bar Method (a similar type of workout) was incredibly popular, and because I had gotten myself addicted to it (seriously!), I was really excited to find Pure Barre here. In theory, Pure Barre is a phenomenal workout that will lengthen muscles and lift and tone everything. The substance of the class is a combination of ballet, pilates, yoga, and strength work. It definitely helps to have a dance background, or at least some level of body awareness, but it's not necessary. It is similar to Bar Method (opening soon in Covington but not in New Orleans yet) and Xtend Barre (two New Orleans locations). My main problem with Pure Barre is that the instructors don't give form corrections - which may seem like a minor point, but when you're doing the small, isometric movements that are the key to the class, it's very important to have proper form. Otherwise, you don't get the full benefit of the exercise, and you could even hurt yourself. Unfortunately, Pure Barre places almost no emphasis on form. Yes, the teachers will occasionally remind the class to keep proper form, but they do not give any individual corrections. Because of this, in the classes I've taken, over 50% of the class will have incredibly poor form at any given time...and they probably don't even know it! I am a former dancer with a lot of experience in this type of class, but even I sometimes am not sure whether my form is right - in Bar Method, I relied on instructors to correct me, but in Pure Barre, I just feel like a fool going through the movements in what's possibly a completely improper way. What I also dislike about Pure Barre - and really, this is more me missing Bar Method than disliking PB - is that the instructors aren't as enthusiastic or encouraging as I feel like they could be. Bar Method teachers encourage each student by name, giving positive feedback when it's deserved. Pure Barre teachers do this once in a blue moon. As a suggestion, to any of the teachers reading this, a little motivation really goes a long way! My other main problem is the price - at $25 a class, and $225 for a month of unlimited classes, Pure Barre is one of the most expensive workouts I've ever heard of, especially in New Orleans. The new client special of $100 for an unlimited month of classes is a good deal, but after that, I don't think it's worth it. The instructors at Pure Barre are all very nice, and Pure Barre COULD be a great workout, but it just isn't there yet. I'll wait for Bar Method to open in Covington instead. read more

So...sore! But in such a good way! I've been going for a few months now and I just love it. Pure Barre is a great, quick, super intense workout that'll leave your muscles shaking and your body super sore but in an "I just accomplished something awesome today" sort of way. The instructors and staff are extremely nice and they're always willing to help. Yes, it's a little pricey, but I think it's completely worth it for such an intense workout. And by intense, I mean working your muscles to the point of exhaustion, not impact intense like most martial arts-based workouts. I have bad knees and foot problems that hurt after high impact workouts, so I was thrilled when I found out you move very little during a Pure Barre class, but boy! That little movement packs a big punch! It's all about "isolated movements" so even the smallest change makes your muscles beg for mercy. But like I said, it's in a good way.
