They told me that they needed to write corporate well now we're going on for weeks still waiting. I figured it's high time I update my review. I've been going to PureBarre (primarily Newton and sometimes Wellesley) for nearly five years (gasp!). I never thought I'd come back after the first class, but with the encouragement and support of so many great instructors and fellow classmates, this has turned out to be a favorite in my exercise/fitness routine, I do mix in other types of fitness classes at other studios (e.g. megareformer, spinning), and can safely say that PureBarre has become a mainstay for me. I'm mostly a fan of Pure Barre for PLATFORM, the quasi step aerobics-style cardio classes the studio now offers a few times a week. When my doctor told me to work in more cardio into my fitness routine, I started spinning regularly and make sure I hit a PLATFORM class once a week. I find more value in the workout, and appreciate the attention on working (then adequately stretching) the core and outer hips. As for "regular" barre, I still take class maybe once every other week, because there are so many schedule options. As other reviewers have noted, I too question some of their cues on alignment (i.e. pointing your toe with an open knee joint) and modify some exercises. The staff is super friendly and enthusiastic, and also responsive over email to answer questions, re-up a package, or comp you a class the first time you space out and miss one you booked. And yup, it's pricey, but worth trying a month for $100 then keeping an eye out for specials. They also offer a 25% discount for students. And they offer free "breaking down the barre" classes that are super helpful to talk through their cues, as the classes are fast-paced. Also, the merch is always on point, and there are a few (maybe 4) free parking spots and there's a metered lot right next door. read more

I've been to many a workout craze - and all I can say about Pure Barre, is that if you don't fall in love with it - then you must be crazed. Pure Barre is a 55 minute, isometric, low- impact workout meant to build a long & lean dancer's body. I've attended quite a few classes, and through the shaking muscles (it's working!), I feel stronger, taller, more flexible, and have noticeably lost inches around my problem areas. Newbies or veterans (I just attended one as it is a new offering) should attend the free "breaking down the barre" class that explains the how's and why's of the positions. I can definitely say that you get your monies worth. It's not the cheapest workout out there - but the results I get from here are more than any other gym membership has provided. And when it comes to your health, isn't it worth it (also forces me to buy a few less bottles of wine, which is likely more of a positive than a negative). New clients get an unlimited month for $100 - take advantage of that - and often they do promotions in studio and through their FB & email that will save you quite a bit. On top of the great workout - the owner, Rachel, and all her staff go above and beyond to be friendly and know each clients name. I can't remember the last time I went to a health center or larger studio that knew my name. The studio is gorgeous - three walls covered in mirrors and ballet barres so you can focus on positioning during your workout. They also provide all the equipment you may need for class (small ball, stretch band & hand weights). My final recommendations are to utilize their online scheduler to map out your weekly classes in advance as they can fill up. And try to stay away from the cute workout clothing they sell in the studio (impossible) or just use it as a reward when you hit your body/workout goals! read more

I went to a Pure Barre class on a whim with one of my friends, and I am now addicted. Pure Barre is 55 minute total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs and burns fat in record-breaking time. It utilizes the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements, which makes you feel like you are training to be some big part in the Nutcracker. Everyone who works at Pure Barre is extremely nice. The instructors are very approachable and are eager to talk to you before or after class on how you can improve your technique. They also wonder throughout the room during the class to help you. This week marks my fifth week of me doing Pure Barre two to three times per week, and I am already seeing results. Typically, my workouts during the week are running or doing body pump at my local gym. Pure Barre really adds to these workouts by targeting various muscle groups. When I first agreed to go to a class, I didn't think it would be that difficult. I've never been into yoga, and doing a workout in my socks through me off. This is seriously one of the hardest workouts I have ever done. Therefore, if you have any interest in just seeing what a Pure Barre class is like, do it! I love this place! I am without a doubt very far from perfecting the technique used in these classes, but I still love them. The teachers have all been really helpful and I love that they go around and adjust you in a non-judgmental way. I've certainly needed more than my fair share of adjusting and they've been right there helping with a smile. I think I have been to a class with almost every teacher and I really have enjoyed all of them! They are each a little different and they're all so nice. Plus they all have a booty anyone would be envious of! Makes you want to work that much harder, the music helps too. The past few days I've been using them as my own therapy. You are so concentrated in each movement that you aren't even thinking about anything or anyone else, just your own body. I have even been waking up at 5:30 to get to the classes before work, I find once we start I even forget what time of day it is and the hour is over before I know it! The exercises are tough but you can see exactly why it works if you stick with it. The class really allows for everyone to take it at their own pace to. From a beginner like me to an old pro, everyone is getting a great workout in. I dread the day my first new member unlimited month package is over and I have to pay the regular price. I am still sore from going to Pure Barre on Friday...and yes, its Tuesday. You really get what you pay for here. For someone who is not that athletic/in shape like me, this was a great low impact class for me. I swear I could feel new muscles after one class! Pure Barre is absolutely amazing. It's a very unique, fun, and addicting way to really get in shape and transform your body. It's difficult to understand the terminology at first and to understand exactly what type of movement you're supposed to be doing, but there are free workshops offered every so often called "Breaking Down the Barre" that can help you figure everything out to get the most out of your work out. I did the new client unlimited one-month special, which is a great deal. I thought I was in good shape, but got my butt kicked the first week. By the end of the first month and only taking about 10 classes, I saw big changes in my arms, midsection, and thighs. Also, an unexpected bonus, an extreme increase in flexibility. Before PB, I thought I'd never be able to touch my toes, they seemed miles away. Now, I'm doing all kinds of weird noodle things like touching my face to my knee. I'm so close to a split! We are really very lucky to have such an amazing PB in Newton. Since becoming addicted, I went on vacation in Sarasota and just had to take a class at the local PB studio there. Although each studio is set up to look the same, I missed the studio back home! It is set up so divinely and has THE best instructors around. They are so good at what they do, giving excellent demonstrations, motivating detailed instructions, and circling around the room to help you with your technique. They're also some of the most friendly people I have ever met, even the owner knows my name! The only thing that I could possibly bring up as a con is the price. As a student it's hard to spend money on extras in general and classes are a little out of my price range unfortunately. I was hesitant at first because I hate classes , I can't follow instructions and have never been a fan of them . But this class is amazing , I urge anyone to try it out once . It's a great full body workout , concentrating a lot on my problem areas .. Thighs/butt and I'm definitely hooked . It was my second time at this location and was very disappointed at the unwelcoming and rude staff. I arrived at exactly 10:40 and was not allowed to enter class. I understand the very strict policy but the manner which it was presented was unprofessional and mean. The two instructors greeted my daughter's and I with an attitude that was unnecessary. Sometimes it is important to be flexible with people so they feel like they want to come back to your business. Staff did not take our feelings into account and was most concerned with their money. This is not an establishment that promotes healthy minds. I started taking class at Pure Barre about 3 months ago when I happened to be driving through Newton Center and noticed the studio. If I wasn't hooked after 1 class, I certainly was after seeing such great results within just a few weeks. I have tried many different types of workouts over years and Pure Barre has definitely made the biggest impact on the shape of my body in a significantly shorter amount of time. For a workout with pretty much zero impact on your knees and other joints I think that is pretty amazing. Don't be fooled though, you will work hard! The 55 minute class goes by very quickly which is also a huge plus versus watching the minutes tick by on the treadmill. The music is upbeat and the instructors do a great job keeping you motivated while also making sure that you are in the right position during the exercises to ensure you're getting the most out of each workout. The only thing I can say is that it is a little on the expensive side, but as long as I continue to see these kind of results I will happily pay for the classes (and of course the more you go the lower the cost per class). I guess I'm hard to impress, because Pure Barre doesn't do it for me. I teach barre, yoga, pilates, and strength and conditioning classes to adults. I also coached high level gymnastics (specializing in conditioning and flexibility) for 14 years. So, suffice to say, getting a good workout can be tough because a) I am constantly teaching OTHER people a workout and b) I'm in good enough shape that most workouts don't really challenge me. Also, I am a form and alignment junkie so I see many exercises/exercise methods out there that encourage poor form and technique (or at the very least, don't care to correct them). I have taken two Pure Barre classes at different locations, and can say that although the instructors seem very qualified and very helpful in terms of correcting form, they do seem to read from the same "script", so to speak. They often sound robotic. Also, I don't care for the music (I assume that might be scripted as well) so that takes away from the fun factor. In some cases I felt I had to back off on a move or two because the anatomical alignment was not very safe, although the unsafe move was being held/encouraged for a long period. So in terms of their anatomy/physiology, their certification process may or may not be "kosher", or it could just be the specific instructors. What really makes me take off the second star is the price. There is no way that these classes are worth $23. Yoga certifications cost 3--4k, and that is just for the basic 200 hours, and yoga classes often run at $15-$18 a drop-in. We have to know OODLES about anatomy and kinesiology in addition to history, philosophy, meditation techniques, ailments and health conditions for poses, etc. I doubt the Pure Barre certification is worth that much money (although no doubt they charge up the wazoo) and covers that much information. Even with the package deals, the classes are still expensive. For what you get, the workouts are worth about $15 in my opinion. I think it's great that there are people out there hooked on a total body workout like this and it's helping them get strong and in shape, but I think it's a huge rip-off and don't see any value in it for myself. read more

I took my first PB class, thanks to RueLaLa. I can understand why there are so many devotees to this type of exercise - the classes are intense, fast-paced, different and challenging (you are most definitely sore the next day). I don't know if it was because it was my first time but I felt completely lost in the "tucking" and "lifting." Instructors at other, non-PB classes typically ask if there are first-timers but this wasn't the case; there appeared to be a many regulars. I found myself trying to listen and understand the fast-spoken directions of the instructor, and then reproduce them. It's a lot to take in if you're not a regular (I kept having to look at everyone else to see what the heck to do). I prefer smaller classes; this class had about 25 people in there and there is a lot of moving around so personal space is a compromised. The instructor was moving around, correcting a few students, so I think that's a good sign. I wore my regular socks (vs. purchasing grippy socks) and I was just fine. Remember to take off your shoes prior to entering the class room! The space is very clean and sleek. The location of the studio is good with a metered parking lot next to it. Staff was nice. As I got the deal through RueLaLa, the price was just right (3 classes for $30). I think a single class is $23 (a little steep for me) and they have package deals. read more

Pure Barre is a true addiction. Having tried multiple bar(re) studios this one ranks high on my list. My main reason for loving PB so much is the pace in which the class moves. Not slow where you can get bored easily and not too fast where you can't keep up. I have bad knees from running so this is one of the few workouts that I can do that I feel I've gotten a great workout from and not have sore knees the day after. The Newton center location is super convenient easily accessible next to the Newton Center T stop, and adjacent public lot right by the studio for those driving. Overall, I really enjoy my experience at PB Newton. Everyone is really nice here. My only con is I wish they would do adjustments more. On my roughly ~40th class I finally found out I've been doing the ab workouts incorrectly. read more

this place is addictive!!! I've been to 5 classes in the last week and I absolutely love it! The workout concentrates on every girl's problem areas and it's done in a very feminine way, makes you feel really great and pretty! The concept might be a bit confusing at first, but you get into in pretty fast. The instructors walk around the room during the entire class and help out students with form and movement. All of my 5 classes were with different teachers, and I like all of them (some a bit more than others). If you're considering this place, I suggest you get $100/month unlimited package for beginners, so you get a good feel of the class, get comfortable around and try out all the instructors. Each girl has a slightly different way of teaching, so you might prefer one over the other. All of the classes (I've been there at 5:30, 7:50pm and 11am on Saturday) are packed, so book ahead! Waiting lists are available for each class too. I'm really not crazy about the scheduling website they use. You can't see if the class is full until you actually click on it to schedule. It's annoying, I wish you could scroll through the week and see how many students are in each class. It is pricey, but I like the packages they offer, you can pick the level of commitment you're comfortable with, from one to 6 months. And it's a great change from all these place that make you commit for 6+months. read more

I love Pure Barre! The classes are difficult but in a good way and you're working muscles you never do otherwise. You get stronger as you go and everyone is concentrating on themselves so there's no fear of not being able to do the moves or feeling out of place. All of the instructors are great. You really do see results and the "tucking" is addictive. The studio is nice and clean. They don't overschedule so there is always at least 10 minutes between classes - that means no danger of a prior class running long and people trying to put away and get equipment at the same time. I took away 1 star for 2 reasons: 1. The cost - classes are pretty expensive, even if you buy a bulk pass. 2. Crowded - You have to sign up in advance for classes and they do cap them but I think they let 2 people too many in, the room can get pretty full and sometimes it's difficult to find space if you're running late. Overall though I'm so glad this studio - it's a great workout. read more

I started going to Pure Barre in the middle of July. To start off I signed up for the one month unlimited package for new members. I figured I would give myself one good month to see if this would help rev up my workouts. I was hooked immediately and loved going as much as I could during that first month. Since then I have purchased the additional 20 class package and I will continue buying more as I run out. In the last month and a half I have definitely seen my body change for the better. I am toned in areas that I was struggling with before. I feel stronger and more lean as the weeks go by and can get through some of the routines without having to take a break. I have taken a class with probably all the instructors at some point and I think they are all great. I love the music that they use in their routines and the other great thing is that each time I go I do something different. (this was one of my worries coming in, that I would do the same thing day to day and eventually stop seeing results). The staff are also super nice and the studio is kept very neat and clean. The down side is that it is a little pricey. I am used to paying much less for a regular gym membership so this is a bigger commitment BUT it is definitely worth it so I will go as often as my budget allows. read more

Absolutely amazing place! I may be a little biased having been a dancer my entire life, but this workout class has changed my life. I've just completed my first full month and feel stronger, leaner, and more toned from this class than from running, weight lifting, or any other type of workout I've done. The classes are a great size and you get tons of one-on-one instruction from the teacher. Elise is by far my favorite instructor there, but they really are all incredible. Good music selection, friendly staff, and a beautiful studio. They even have a few free parking spots behind the building, but they're first come, first serve. I am a yoga junkie and tried Pure Barre on a whim when it opened in Newton Centre. It's different than any exercise I've tried before, and definitely challenging! But the results, as others have said, come quickly and before you know it you are hooked. I never thought I'd choose something over a yoga class, but now I balance the two for my weekly workouts. Classes are 55 minutes, you work hard, and it's all work targeted at very specific muscle groups - arms, abs, thighs, rear. Within the first ten minutes your body should be shaking. It's so challenging, but then...you start noticing definition where you never saw it before...and you go back, and back, and back. I find it a great strength building complement to my yoga. Definitely recommend it, but it does seem like it attracts people who have a certain level of fitness already - a total newbie might be overwhelmed. read more

I'm pretty much echoing some of the other people who gave 4 stars. Amazing workout, no doubt. I had been doing yoga twice a week and had basically plateaued. I started going to Pure Barre and after a month my overall fitness level and even my yoga practice somehow became much stronger (and I've gotten more flexible). I normally don't follow trendy things but I wanted to see what the hype was about. I was not happy about the price tag of these classes so I figured I'd pay for one $23 class and then I could satisfy my curiosity. I knew there was a new client special of $100 for a month of unlimited but I was pretty sure I would not do that. But then I took the class. The class was much harder than I expected and I liked that it was low impact and was reminiscent of the Pilates I used to do years ago. So after class I figured I might as well do the special. At that time I thought I would just do the month of classes and then never go again. BUT that month I converted to a Pure Barre devotee. I grew to not only really like it but love it. I was surprised to see that there's starting to be a little more definition in my after-pregnancy belly in just that one month. And really I've only been going 2-3 times/wk. So it may be breaking the bank for me (at $20 a class with the class pack) but I'll probably keep going. Plus I always feel great after I come out of there whereas with my gym workouts I leave feeling sluggish. I gave 4 stars mainly because of the cost, but also because every time I try to sign up for the class there is a waitlist and then I never know if I'll be in the class or not which makes it tough to plan my schedule. And with 2 kids I can't just fly by the seat of my pants, I have to plan childcare. Also, they always say it's a mixture of pilates, yoga, and ballet. Definitely it incorporates pilates but I don't see much of the other 2. A couple stretching poses are reminiscent of yoga but nothing else. And I wish there was more ballet incorporated but there isn't any other than using a turnout in a couple of the exercises. read more

I have only been to two pure barre classes and loved it! I have danced all my life and have never had my thighs shake and burn the way they did in class. The movements are small but extremely powerful. My only complaint about pure barre is that it is expensive....being a grad student has prevented me from taking more classes but I plan on taking them up on their great offer for first students which is one month unlimted for $100. I was never a person who enjoyed the gym or working out...I knew I needed to get in shape but everything I have done in the past was boring and couldn't hold my attention so I always gave up. A friend of mine went a couple of times and got me to try it. Sounded appealing as it's not a lot of jumping around and needing to be coordinated...you know what I'm talking about! The concentration level is a 10 at Pure Barre...this is the only time my mind ceases to wonder or worry about anything other than tucking and the rest of the world takes a back seat. I actually look forward to going and although it is brutal it is WORTH EVERY SECOND. It's so intense but in a good way...not like doing circuit until you want to puke! The short moments of stretching are pure heaven after you have just tortured your thighs and every other muscle in your body. My confidence has increased, I feel healthier and stronger and I have lost my focus on being skinny and perfect but more on being amazed at what my body is capable of and how strong I can become. I have been going for about 3 months now and wow do I feel and see a difference. I don't ever feel out of place here as the instructors learn your name and remember you and sometimes even say "Good Job Kelsey" during class and in my mind I say "Yesssss!" They are good at motivating you and pushing you with more advanced moves (with the occasional "You know who you are...") as well as modified ones, especially during that last count of 10 when you really feel the burn in your muscles. Time is taken to correct your form so you get the most burn and shake possible and just when you think you are going to come out of a move you are reminded "The higher the heels the thinner the thighs" and somehow you make it happen. Who would have thought 1 inch movements and 3 pound weights could do so much. Such low impact that you can go multiple times a week and it is ALWAYS hard...you just have to push and know that the countdown is coming very soon...I promise! So much fun, addictive, amazing... Only negative is that it's spendy! I may have to cut back on the AC this summer or something just so I can keep going. read more

I cant say enough great things about Pure Barre located in Newton Centre. I have been going there since it has opened. Not only did it improve my posture immensely but it also transformed my body. I feel muscles I have never felt before. The teachers and especially the owner, Rachel are all beyond friendly and keep me so motivated! The environment is so friendly as well as welcoming. The instructors pay specific attention to each person in any class. I felt bikini ready after only one class! I don't know what I would do without Pure Barre in Newton. It has been a life changer. I LOVE Pure Barre. I'm a huge fan of barre workouts and have tried many different studios. Many other reviewers have detailed the workout, so I'll set that aside. The main reason I'm loving PB is the convenience factor--PB is located in Newton Centre, very central location. The cancellation policy is generous--give three hours notice or you have to forfeit the class. Some other studios require TWELVE hours notice--yikes! Yes, classes fill up quickly so you have to plan ahead, but if I'm one of the first few on the wait list, I almost always get in. Also, PB Newton and PB Wellesley are owned by the same person, so if you can't get into Newton, try Wellesley. It usually isn't as crowded. The only reason I am not giving them five stars is that, while the instructors are generally very good, I'd still like to see more form corrections from some. Also, providing additional challenge for advanced students would be nice. read more

I have studied and practiced 25 years (and counting) in ballet and I still leave every class with my muscles shaking!! The classes are not leveled but beginner or advanced, you are guaranteed to get a total body workout. The class is a bit fast paced, especially if it is your first time. The instructors and staff are super friendly and try to give everyone attention and/or corrections; always nice especially when the class can be large. Registering online is easy and I highly suggest it as popular days, times and instructors make the classes fill up quickly! Pure Barre is simply great. My first class was very hard, I had no idea what I was doing and I was so sore the next day I could barely move (the good kind of sore, I worked real hard for that pain). The next few times I went it got better, it takes a few classes to understand the technique and I'm always still learning, so if you are new hang in there! I have never felt my muscles shake the way they do while in class at PB, it's actually kind of comical. But after class you can't beat the feeling, it is a great workout. And you can reward yourself after a hard class with some jewelry or sparkly headbands, they have a little boutique like store out front there is always something new! read more
