UPDATE: Have now taken a few more classes. Some further mulling: 1. I missed the memo that you don't have to switch between rounds. Obviously most people do but you have the option of doing all 4 rounds of floor or all 4 rounds of treadmill. I was majorly confused when not everyone made the switch but apparently you can just stay at the same station the whole time. But anyway, you have the option of booking a Double Floor option if you don't want to do the treadmill. 2. There is a *vibe* here and frankly, it gets on my nerves. Not enough for me to stop going altogether but it is a huge pet peeve to see people on their phones during a round (not even during a break) and taking selfies/scrolling Instagram. You may say, "Joy, be a big girl and just ignore them." You'd be right but it is a) hugely distracting and b) disrespectful to the instructor. I get it, we're all addicted to our phones, but there's a diff between quickly checking your phone for an email versus being on IG for minutes at a time. 3. I do think some of the instructors could demo the moves more, rather than punt it to a random person and say, "Everyone, look at [NAME] and see what she does!" As it was, the transitions are so quick, I again copied what everyone was doing around me or ... just did my own thing. Which brings me to my next point. 4. A lot of the moves don't necessarily need to be done with the equipment that the instructors mention. In one of the classes, we did bicep curls with a band. I found it needlessly confusing and time-consuming to set up, so just did the same thing with a weight. Don't be afraid/too self-conscious to modify. 5. So far, my favorite instructor has been Harley, who teaches the Arms & Abs class on Monday evenings. His cues are super clear, he'll do the moves with the class, and he's very encouraging and kind. I first heard about Barry's a few months back when one of my friends mentioned trying his first class in Nashville, and absolutely loving it. Because of this, my expectations were high and figured it would be similar to Orange Theory but better. I would like to preface that I honestly loathe running long distance though I will still do it to challenge myself. I had no idea what I was walking into other than the fact that there would be lots of running and that the classes alternate between treadmill running and floor exercises. The instructor was nice, however, most of the class I had a hard time understanding her due to the loud music and her voice just didn't sound clear with her mic. As others in the reviews have stated, they don't really walk you through the steps and really what's next. For treadmill run, jogging was done 5/6/7 and sprinting 7/8/9. At first, I have to admit I felt super intimidated because running is not my strong suit at all... but to my surprise, I held my own pretty well & it wasn't too bad. From this class experience, I do feel a little disappointed. I did not feel like the class was actually as challenging as I thought it would be or even how it's perceived on social media platforms. After class, I felt I could still go to another HIIT class, compared to when I had tried OrangeTheory once upon a time ago, my entire body was sore. The music playing during the working out was also not the best quality. I could barely hear the songs not due to the volume but because the speakers made the music sound muffled. I have seen some other peoples reviews about not getting proper instruction on your first class and that is 100% true. My first class I had no idea what I was doing. I was starting on the treds but they were saying what we needed for our floor set up so I was trying to get that started when I was met with someone else also in my spot and she informed me that we were switching and I would set up my floor station after my run. It absolutely would have been nice to get that beforehand and then when class started they were shouting numbers and I had no clue what was going on. I definitely think it would be helpful if there was a quick intro for new folks instead of just getting tossed into the fire. I came back because I loved the work out and they kick your butt! And now that I've been a few times I've gotten the hang of it and it is my favorite workout. I feel on top of the world when I finish a Barry's boot camp and the instructors here push you but also give you grace. Alex will get me to run as hard as I can and not make me feel bad when I have to drop down to a walk. read more

A great location in Chestnut Hill, right next to the container store. I went on a weekend morning, so it wasn't too crowded. The studio is very large, but everything is jam packed in together. The treadmill and work benches are very close to one another. There was a welcome card on the treadmill where I started and the instructor let me know what he'll be saying for when I'm on the treadmill vs when I'm doing weight training. This workout is very intense switching from running to weights a couple of times. It was a bit confusing trying to figure out what numbers the instructor was saying for the treadmill, so I adjusted to what worked for me. I have never been a runner, so not falling off the treadmill was my goal. Running on a treadmill definitely has a learning curve and I accidentally pulled the safety cord once too, but it ended up being a nice break in-between sprints. The swear towel definitely came into use and the weight workouts were easy enough to follow along. Barry's has a massive weight rack, but I stuck to the lighter of the heavy weight from 10-15lbs for the exercises we were doing. The instructor was definitely full of energy to get people pumped up on a weekend morning. The music was loud, energy was high, and the lights were dim, so all you had to do was keep going. There are locker rooms with showers and all the amenities you could need as well as a fuel bar. There's a small retail area with massage guns as you'll need them for recovery. Overall, a very high intense class that'll give you a great workout. read more

I absolutely LOVE Barry's Bootcamp in Chestnut Hill. I'm coming from Framingham, so I'm thrilled to not have to go all the way into Boston to get one of these classes in. I like to go about once a month using ClassPass (15 credits for one class which is pretty hefty) and it's always a treat when I go! If you're a beginner to fitness I don't know how much I would recommend these classes. I workout at least 3x a week and am used to HIIT training and lifting and these classes still kick my ass like no other at the end. The trainers that I've had have always been super friendly and welcoming. They have given clear directions therefore making it easy to make the transitions. There's NOTHING better than taking a luxurious shower post class with their Oribe products (another treat factor considering Oribe is pricy AF) - there are only 3 showers though, but I've never had to wait. There are also 2 bathrooms and I've usually had to wait, but not the biggest deal. Lastly, the fuel bar! You can pre order a shake so that it's ready for you right after class. This is the BEST. They are pricy (around $9-$11 each) but like I said, I treat going to Barry's like a once a month treat so I like to have the whole experience! read more

Holy crap. I run, I do yoga, I do the occasional weight day at the gym, but Barry's is something new. It's opening weekend here for the CNH location and I am so happy they have one out in the 'burbs now. I walked in and was greeted by one of the owners, Dustin, who seemed just as excited as I was to be there. Ashley was my instructor for my *first class ever* and she totally kicked my ass (not to mention she was my biggest cheerleader during my really hard sprints). Amazingly clean and well-stocked locker rooms, super friendly staff who are basically #fitnessgoals, and a killer smoothie bar. You can actually sign up for a smoothie to be ready at a certain time and they will have it waiting for you after class. The dirty chai was exactly what my aching body needed. The lockers are free, there are clean towels for showering and/or sweating, and really nice face washes and shampoos if you shower there. With classes at all hours of the day and such an amazingly supportive atmosphere, I don't know why I'd go workout anywhere else. I totally understand the hype and Barry's is absolutely worth the money. Welcome to your new favorite way to get fit. You won't regret giving Barry's a try. Location is great because it is outside the city and there is parking which is awesome. Love the instructors and the front desk staff and the gym is very clean. The only reason I am giving this location 2/5 stars is because you pay the same price you would pay at the Downtown Crossing or Back Bay location but the classes are 50 minutes and not 60. You are basically paying more money for less fitness time. You have the same amenities at all three locations, so nothing is different only the fact that you are paying more for less at Chestnut Hill ‍ read more

Thoroughly disappointed by my experience. Signed up for my first class through classpass. As a former D1 athlete I very much value and appreciate HIIT because it is training like this that I felt my performance saw the most improvement when in college. With that being said I was very much excited about trying Barry's since I was growing abit tired of Orangetheory. Boy am I just gonna stick to Orange! I definitely thought the workout was challenging and if I had finished it I do feel I would've been satisfied. but being that it was my first time I made sure to get there early so I can kinda get a way of the terrain and see what I was in for. Orangetheory makes an effort to truly show you prior to the class what to expect. I got none of that here. So I just went in ok maybe I can just pick up when I get the rhythm of everything. Instructor seemed really dope and giddy and fit which is a pretty big thing for me so I was excited. Once the class started I was on the treadmill I dont know if it was the lingo maybe the volume of the music but I could not follow what pace, what incline, what interval she was telling us to do and all of a sudden I'm on the floor told to grab weights not sure where they were and I overall just got very frustrated. When I said to the instructor hey I'm abit lost and finding it hard to follow I was met with a tone and "did you not say it was your first time at the beginning of the class? Because I had asked and You didn't say anything so that's why." Wtf? She essentially blamed me for being new and obviously not hearing her when she asked at the beginning. And even if it was my fault an instructor should be observant enough of her class to realize my incline is at 9 while everyone else's is at 0! It was at the point that she said that to me I just put away my weights and walked out! I take working out very seriously. And have had the opportunity to workout with world class athletes I know for a fact none of them would ever approach either someone new to working out or someone new to a new style of working out with this kind of rudeness and impatience. Very disappointed and will maybe try a different time with a different instructor and be sure to express my needs but Barry's for how much people pay for these classes you need to do a better job of getting people adjusted to the style of training you are trying to invoke and not just throw people in there and expect them to figure it out. read more

I got the First-Timers pass and went to Ashley's class this morning. She controls the room, keeps everyone where they need to be (even noobs like me) and makes clear what has to happen. The workout itself was great, a combination of treadmill running and strength training. The facility is very clean, locker room was clean and easy to navigate. I'll be back. read more

I'd give this a 5 but... I was visiting from the west coast where I do Barry's which I love. A great class. Challenging. Manageable because it's broken up. Gym is clean. Nice big locker room. The instructor I took was good but not amazing. My biggest complaint was the smoothie I had which was weak and warm like it was made 20 minutes before class ended. Already separating. Gross. But parking is easy and I'll go back. I used to be addicted to SoulCycle. Now it's Barry's. read more

I have been to this location twice. Two different teachers, two different experiences. The first time my friend and I went together as first timers. The space is really nice. Very clean with all the amenities - seriously. From a juice bar to phone charging stations in the lockers. This location also has parking which is great. The checking in process was fairly simple. However, we were told as new people that we would be able to go in to the class first and talk to the instructor which did not happen. The instructor did not ask if anyone was new, but instead just taught the class as if everyone was familiar with what was going on. This was very frustrating, especially something as high intensity as this was. We didn't know we would be going back and forth, back and forth. It was difficult to understand when the instructor was talking to the treadmill group and when she was talking to the floor group. We couldn't see her when she would show us what floor work to do. No one was very welcoming, which as a new person was a bummer. I left that day feeling pretty unfulfilled and unsure of the whole experience. That being said, I went a second time to the same location with a different instructor, Ashley. She was very friendly and asked if anyone was new. The two people I went with were allowed to go in early and chat with Ashley about what was going to happen and the overall structure of the class. Afterward, my friends said this was very helpful to them. During the class, Ashley was very clear and had a positive attitude during the class. She also played good music. I would definitely go back with her as my instructor. Overall, the workout is good. Time flies by, especially with a good workout. I give them a 4 stars mostly based on my second experience and the fact that the facility is very nice. I recommend trying it out, but make sure you get into the class early if it's your first time! read more

I went to Barry's bootcamp for the first time using Classpass. You go back and forth between running on the treadmill at different speeds and incline and strength training using weights and resistance bands. It was definitely an intense workout that will make you burn a lot of calories. I was also sore the next day. However, I would not go again or recommend it to my friends. The gym is more like a night club. You work out in complete darkness except for some glowing red lights and they have dance music blasting during the entire workout. People in my class seemed to really care about their appearances. They were all wearing the trendiest workout outfits. I don't have anything against night clubs or trendy workout apparel but I want at least enough lighting to see the instructor and see what I am doing, and also not be pressured to have to dress like a celebrity when I exercise. If this sort of cool modern atmosphere helps you stay motivated to workout then by all means go for it. That is the brand they are selling but it's just not my personal preference. The main reason I would not go back is that they seem to value quantity over quality/form in their workouts. They really try to push you on the treadmill by encouraging you to increase your speed to double digits. But everyone is so different that I felt that the recommended numbers may not have been appropriate for some people. Good thing I used to run a lot or else I would've flown off the treadmill and hit the wall behind me. I ended up running below the recommended speeds so I wouldn't hurt myself. During strength training, the instructor seemed to care more about how heavy your weights were and how many reps you could do, instead of making sure the weights were appropriate for your level and having the proper form. There were people next to me doing push ups with such bad form that their necks might have broken. I felt pressured to focus on the number of reps I could do at the expense of using proper form and actually having an effective workout. I also felt like some of the exercises could probably hurt your back if you were to do them repeatedly. One of the key things I look for in a gym/workout is that you are taught to exercise safely and EFFECTIVELY by exercising at the appropriate level or using appropriate weights/form. I did not feel that Barry's Bootcamp met what I was looking for, therefore I won't be going back. read more

I can't say enough good things about the Barry's bootcamp CNH location. As a college student and a former high school varsity athlete, I craved an outlet and a place to push myself physically. Because of the rigors of school and the lack of time in my schedule, I felt that I was never going to get in shape again. Barry's bootcamp has provided me with an opportunity to push myself and to challenge my body in ways I did not think were possible. I have the instructors and the incredible staff to thank for that. Not only do the instructors come to class prepared to work, they also bring an amazing energy to their classes meant to motivate and inspire you. They teach and model perfect form, while encouraging you to do your best. They make the high intensity interval training possible for people of all workout levels. Whether you are doing floor exercises with weights or running on the treadmill, they will come and check in with you making your workout feel much more personal. My favorite instructors Derek D and Brittany W have been major supporters of me throughout my time at Barry's. Their location in the Street is perfect for both students and local parents and community members. The facility is always clean, and the staff always provides fresh towels, cold water bottles, protein smoothies, and quality shower products. I would recommend this experience and this specific Barry's location to anyone looking to push themselves and to intensify their workout. read more
