I received a free class thanks to the Class Pass App. which gives out a free 2-week pass to new members. The app. allows you to book several fitness classes from different gyms and studios. SPIN CLASS (between a 3 and a 4 star rating) -- I visited for an evening class in March 2023. The vibe/energy of the class wasn't as strong as I wanted. While the instructor (Maria Z.) was good, she wasn't too high energy the whole class. The class also started about 4 minutes late. I think if there were more people in the class that I would have had a better experience but there were alot of empty bikes inside which wasn't too encouraging to push myself harder as I biked. I noticed that I wasn't as excited throughout the whole class when I normally am very upbeat for a spin class and I don't think I was tired. It was just the slightly low-energy vibe of the class. There were only about 5 other women in the 6:30pm class (no men). From the number of people who came out of the 5:30pm class (males and females), there were alot more people in that class. The 5:30pm probably had more energy. SERVICE (5/5) -- This was good and I appreciated the instructor helping me set up my bike to the right seat position relative to my height. I was also given shoes for free to use (first class = free shoes) but I think normally you have to pay for shoes. I normally frequent Cycle Fly in Lakewood but Psycle is a fine option too. She is an excellent instructor who is disciplined and emphasizes form, teaching you to be thoughtful and aware of your body. What really sets her apart is that she is both yoga teacher and life coach in one, without being too self-help or corny or inaccessible. I'm not at all new-age-y, but her classes really transcend your traditional pose/ stretch/downward-facing dog, and leave you with both a refreshed mind and body. The studio is small but cozy, and you get a feel for a sense of community as the classes are a good mix of long-time veterans and first-time drop-ins. I've also taken some classes at the Yoga Room which is an amazing facility in one of the converted Little Italy school-houses, but the quality and the level of detail of teaching at Green Tara in one of Karen's classes is unmatched. I've only ever done Iyengar yoga (minus the yoga class I went to at a 24hr Fitness once, which was so UNNATURAL and weird), so I can't compare it to any of the other yogas, but the perfectionist in me loves the slower pace and an almost cerebral emphasis on form. I have been to other yoga places, most recently the place on W. 25th St. in Ohio City. Green Tara Yoga is the best experience I have had by far. If you are a teenager or a cheerleader, or want to listen to calming nature sounds and smell incense, you should not come here. But if you honestly want and need to feel better--if you have body aches and want a place that takes these issues seriously, Green Tara is your place. Karen took me and my issues seriously and she knew what she was doing. This woman is an expert. I thought I'd try it for one night, and ended up signing up for eight classes this evening. I was looking for some Pilates classes and bought a package…read moreof eight classes (first timers can buy a package for just over $40!!!) on the Yoga Trends website without a recommendation or ever seeing the studio. After easily reserving a time slot (also online), I drove to the studio and I missed it on the first pass. Why? Because the studio is also a chiropractor's office, and the Yoga Trends sign is not visible from the street. Initially, I was concerned. But then I went in and saw a bunch of crazy machines and a handful of people who all had smiles on their faces and I knew it was going to be great. And, as usual, I was right. The studio is in a doctor's office because the class instructor, Dr. Barry, is also a chiropractor. He and his wife actually invented this particular Pilates method; she studied under a yogi in India and is also an instructor. My classmates and I spent an hour pushing, pulling, bending and flexing our way through a set of challenging (but not ridiculously hard) moves. Dr. Barry thoroughly explained every position, went through the motions with us and gently corrected us as needed along the way. With such a small class (they are specifically kept under 10 people, I think), the instructor was able to give each participant some personal attention. I definitely "felt the burn" the next day, so I know it's working. I cannot recommend this studio highly enough. Go forth, exercise and have fun.

There's a great variety of equipment--multiple machines for every muscle group, tons of cable stations, and a full range of dumbbells with plenty of space to use them. Cardio machines are always available, so I never have to wait. For the past six months, I've been working Chuck for personal training, and the experience has been excellent. He's supportive, answers all my questions, tracks my progress, and adjusts my nutrition goals as my body changes. The gym has a solid community--friendly members but also a focused, no-nonsense vibe. A little about why I chose MPT... I have severe arthritis in my knees and had been pretty sedentary for a couple years because of the pain. After seeing an orthopedic surgeon and going through a couple rounds of injections (cortisone and synvisc), the only thing that I really found helpful was physical therapy. At 53 I was told that I was too young for knee replacements. When my PT sessions were coming to an end, I was looking for a good transition from that. My knees were weak, and I needed strength training. After looking online at a lot of different gyms and reading reviews, I settled on MPT, mainly because of its intimate atmosphere. I really like the appointment-based setting - knowing I have somewhere to be and someone who is expecting me is motivating. There are never more than 4 or 5 other people (including the trainers) there at my appointment time, so I never feel self conscious or rushed. All the trainers at MPT in Westlake are awesome! Dan is the manager, and he came up with a great routine to start out with - with the focus on getting my knees stronger, but staying low impact so I wouldn't injure myself. Sarah, Audri and Evan are so kind, knowledgeable and encouraging. The best part of all of this is that as my knees, hips and whole body is getting stronger, the pain in my knees is dramatically reduced! My stamina has improved so much - I can carry a heavy laundry basket now without my arms getting tired, and I can carry it up two flights of stairs with ease! Everyday tasks are easier now. I'm sleeping better, and even though I am wasn't terribly overweight (I wanted to lose between 15-20 lbs), I have lost a few and it hasn't come back, even if I'm "bad" on a weekend. Even though I've only lost 5 lbs, my body is changing and my clothes are fitting better! It's worth mentioning that I was already conscious that my food portions and calorie intake needed some modification. So before I started at MPT I had decreased my portions and was using an app to make sure I wasn't taking in too many calories. All the trainers at MPT are experienced and well-versed in that as well. Price... With my high deductible insurance plan I was paying about $150 per (give or take, depending on what level they coded it as) Physical Therapy session. I asked what it would be if I wanted to continue out-of-pocket (because my insurance only covered 12 sessions). To continue physical therapy would have been between $75 and $150 per SESSION, depending on how much time I spent there. In contrast, I'm paying MPT about $20 a session (with the package I chose). Like other places, they run specials and if you pay up front (which I did - I chose a 1 year package) you get a break. I could have gotten a bigger break if I had chosen a different package. Try not to get bogged down in all of that - they're a business and they have to make money. It's so worth it!
