I've been going to Pure Hockey over the years to upgrade my gear as I get older and slower - any edge I can get - I take :-) And the crew at Braintree just keeps getting better and better - primarily younger guys that skate themselves, and know the game. It's really a pleasure to talk to these guys and learn about all the technological advances in equipment - it's fascinating how much science has come to the game over the last few decades! I started out in the early 70's playing goalie in all leather Cooper equipment - I grew up gettin beat up in warmups trying to stop Rod Langway and Joey Carlevale shots - and had the welts and bruises to show for it - but no more - the equipment today is soooooo damn good - night and day! So, if you're looking for the best equipment, and staff that knows what works and what doesn't for your level of play, I can't recommend this place enough. You could probably get stuff a bit cheaper on line, but you can't try it on and compare different makes and manufacturers - how the hell do you know if it fits right unless you try it on? Thanks to the Hurricane Debby, we ended up staying at the Best Western hotel in Braintree. We were quite upset being in such a rural area, especially after staying at the Westin Hotel in Back Bay for a week. We then found out that there was a Pure Hockey store right next to the hotel. As a hockey fan myself and my son as a hockey player as well as a hockey referee, we of course got to visit this store. We already visited both Pure Hockey stores in Washington, so we would love to see a Pure Hockey store in Massachusetts. The exterior of the store made us once question if it was actually a store. From the exterior, it looked more like a warehouse. We saw people with kids walking out of the store, so we entered to check out the store. The store was huge, compared with the size of Washington stores. When we were there, we saw many good deals. They had a very complete selection of hockey gear. The staff were very friendly and offered us help. Because we would be flying back to Seattle soon, we couldn't buy everything we wanted. We only purchased some small items such as sweatshirts and pucks. Maybe next time if my son is coming to Boston for college, we would be coming here to update his hockey gear. read more

It's 4:10 pm on Tuesday July 25th. Walked into the store and there were 3 sales reps standing right at the front entrance. We asked where the socks are and one of them pointed to a section. I asked what size my daughter should get and he asked her for her skate size. She didn't know off the top of her head and I asked if he could measure her foot. He looked at me like I was crazy and said with a straight face - "she should know her skate size". WTF!!!! We were in the store and both of my kids were testing sticks. No one ever came up to us and asked if we needed help. However, when my daughter was testing out a stick, one of the sales reps immediately came over and said to please use a demo stick. When my daughter asked why there was such a cost difference between sticks, I told her - "well, if someone bothered to help us, we could ask." We were about to buy a stick and some accessories but decided to leave. I will take my $350+ purchase elsewhere. read more

Pure Hockey should be ashamed of themselves. I bought my 10 year old a Nexus Geo from them. During normal play, the stick snapped just above the blade on a non-shot, non-contact play. Pure Hockey said that since it's beyond 30 days that there's nothing they can do about it. A stick shouldn't snap on a 10 year old weighing 78 lbs. Absolute crap, would not buy it again and Pure Hockey should be ashamed of themselves for not supporting and advocating for their customers. read more

Great personal service here from Joe! He talked to my son and helped him with new skates. Joe asked him questions and talked about playing hockey. When we decided on skates, Joe baked them and fit them to my son's feet. They also sharpened them for us before we left. The fitting and sharpening are free with the skates. Everything was great! Been there a few times to buy goalie equipment. Prices are very high - close to full retail and since most of the items are readily available on the web for 20-50% less, no need to buy at Pure Hockey. Selection is so-so. Couldn't get (or even order) some items I thought would be standard stuff. Weird. Had my new skates sharpened and they didn't even ask what RoH (radius of hollow) I wanted, even though they had a sign indicating 5 options for goalie skates. Didn't matter, they totally F'ed them up. Blades aren't level and they clearly didn't run a stone across the sides to clean off the burrs. Lastly, went with a friend to pick out skates fro her 5 year old son. The salesman didn't know sh*t and they didn't have anything in his size. Of course, they pulled the old "get the size up and wear thicker socks". Great idea, fool. This is sort of the Olympia Sports of hockey equipment. read more

A HUGE store for buying hockey and lacrosse equipment. Nice store with a lot to offer. My review is solely based on skate sharpening. $6 to sharpen, but they totally messed up my son's skates and put no edge on them. He was falling all over the place the next time he used them! I brought them back and they resharpened at no cost, hence the 1 star back for good customer service. This place is really convenient to get to, but I think when they are backed up on weekends they do a poor job sharpening skates, please fix this Pure Hockey! read more

Prices are not outlet prices, and you can get better selection/pricing online. I bought a new helmet that they were supposed to fit to my son's head, but it didn't fit the next day. They also should have sharpened my son's skates, but didn't. He was sliding and falling all over the place the next day. read more

Great store full of best options for hockey and lacrosse gear. They sharpen skates too. Some other yelper on here complained abt sharpening - same type parent that complains abt refs, the ice, equip, the coach - maybe kid cant skate? Anyways if you like a place u can go try on equip, test stick & skates, support a local biz like this - if u rather get cheap stuff cheap online and bash local biz than stay at home. I went here to get my skates sharpened before playing pick-up in Quincy later that night. Although the staff was very friendly and welcoming, and they seem to have a large amount of hockey apparel in stock, I thought the job that was done on my skates was awful. When I stepped out on the ice it felt like they had no edge at all. I've been playing hockey since i was 7 years old and I can easily tell the difference between sharpened skates and when they are not sharpened and there were times when it was hard to keep my balance because there seemed to be no edge whatsoever. I'll come back here if I need to purchase equipment but as far as skate sharpening goes I'll look elsewhere. read more

Every time I go in everyone appears happy and truly like there jobs. The kids that work there mostly play hockey or lacrosse so they are knowledgeable and can relate to my son when he asks them a million question. Today was no different, I completely forgot my son had his first practice today so I flew in an hour prior for skates and a helmet that he outgrew and the staff helped me very quickly so I could make practice and in the quick trip my son left his wallet there and the staff was able to know it was us and emailed me to let me know they had it. Great selection but prices are cheaper elsewhere. Staff seems be be apathetic and lacking any personality. Sometimes I feel I am being an imposition rather than a paying customer. I will NEVER get my skates sharpened there ever again. Very inconsistent grinds and poor quality sharpening. I wonder if they even train their staff properly and quality check their work. Find a good sharpener and stick with them. I recommend Hollow's Edge in Weymouth. Overall, I use the Pure Hockey store for sizing and buy elsewhere. read more
