When my dad died, I was unable to join a grief support group because the timing was off. I found…read moreHaven of Northern VA and participated on one-on-one counseling and then joined a support group later. I got more out of the one-on-one counseling. It was tremendously helpful. I decided to become one of their volunteers (it's an all volunteer group except the Exec Dir) . I went through training Jan-March 2020, and just as I was ready to start, COVID hit. They are still offering counseling through Zoom and calls.

This is a bona fide non-profit group whose mission is to help individuals with grief…read more I participated in the six-week session at Hope Lutheran Church (annex building) in Annandale with two terrific counselors, Lorna and a gentleman whose name I forget but whose demeanor and people skills were excellent. This helped greatly in working through the grief associated with the death of my 80-year old father. In their words, "Haven is a non-profit, nonsectarian community organization of trained volunteers that offers emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill, the dying and to their families and friends. Haven provides education to the community about the needs of those who are grieving." - from the web site. This group teaches the mourner how to cope and confront, not mask, the grief. There is education and support. And although donations are welcome, there are no standard fees. Yes, the person who has had the loss will need to attend the 6 weekly sessions and give the process the respect it deserves. But you will grow as a person. If you are newly bereaved or even if your loss happened a while ago and you cannot 'get over' your grief of a loved one, then please consult Haven and their volunteer staff. You will not be sorry. Here is their web site so you may read for yourself to see if their program is for you: http://www.havenofnova.org/ Haven has special targeted bereavement support groups such as survivors of suicide. Suicide Loss Support Group, Saturday 11:00am to 12:30pm Meets the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month No reservation necessary

ACCA is an acronym for Annandale Christian Community for Action…read more ACCA is a church-supported voluntary organization providing rental assistance, day care, emergency food delivery, Meals on Wheels, basic furniture delivery, housing repair, transportation to medial appointments, family emergency financial assistance, student scholarships and other services to needy families in the area. They have a child development center and a food pantry on-site & all ACCA services, except the Child Development Center, are provided by volunteers at no cost to those who need them. They were founded over 50 years go by Fred & Emily Ruffing, a local family from Alexandria, VA, who were going through hardships themselves. They organized a meeting with representatives from eight local churches to set up a day care center to provide assistance to the working poor. They marshaled support from the county and from local donors & succeeded in meeting the needs! Annandale Christian Community for Action branched out into other activities, all under the banner of "doing what Jesus would do". The organization started with eight churches and currently has a membership of 26. I have been doing food delivery for them for years and I also bring clothing & household donations from my school & my home. The beautiful thing about donating is it is all put out on table for folks to simply take what they need - no cost! So it to literally goes directly to the community. They accept food donations, clothing, toys, household, school supplies, you name it, and you can also donate financially. To request assistance from ACCA, please contact the Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning office at 703-222-0880. I can't say enough good things about this community non-profit organization other than PLEASE SUPPORT!

They create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it easy for children to feel comfortable and secure. The educators are not only knowledgeable but also genuinely passionate about child development. They provide individualized attention, ensuring that each child's unique needs are met. Overall, ACCA CDC stands out as a wonderful and enriching early learning program for young children. It's a place where they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. I would highly recommend it to any parent seeking quality early childhood education in Northern Virginia. Also, see their reviews in Google and Facebook. They reflect the real status of ACCA CDC.

We were greeted by 3 staff members (apologies I don't remember their names). I initially thought this was just a venue to smash stuff but it was explained that this is a mental health venture aimed at spiritual healing. After signing the waivers and donning our PPE, we went in. The wooden structure isn't huge so you cant get running starts or make any long over hear arm movements, but it ended being just the right amount of space to get your smash on. Initially I was caught up in the novelty of smashing things, but a point in time came where that novelty faded and I found myself tapping into an aggression and emotion I did not go there with. It wasn't until I stood there out of breath with my hands sore that I truly understood what this place was for. That session provided a space and avenue for me to truly let go, for just a little bit. If you haven't done that recently (or ever), you need to book a session to understand what im talking about. A challenge was issued to me to put in work on the water heater and I made a decent hole in it but that thing was tough. They sure don't make em like they used to.

The site was well furnished with safety gear (goggles, gloves, etc.), tools (bats, sledgehammers, etc.) and objects to smash (microwave oven, water heater, glass bottles, etc.). It was stress relieving and fun with the opportunity to damage and destroy inanimate objects in a normally civilized world. I definitely recommend if in the DMV area.
