A variety of pizza to choose from. We went with the cheddar nuggets to start. Definitely the classic frozen bag style, but they're classically good. The Clone pizza has the spicy sliced meat and green olives. A first for us, but perfect. The sauce is light, but plenty of flavor. And nothing compares to the fluffy crust which is imported flour from Italy. We can't wait to come back to try the next one. They also have a pizza punch card. I love Neapolitan style so I decided I would try Pyra. They boast about their fresh ingredients and imported dough from Italy so I was rather excited. I generally believe all Neapolitan's start at a 6.8/10 and move their way up but this one is going to have to stick at a generous 6.8. I love the wood fired taste of a Neapolitan but this had anything but that flavor. It's also the first heavy Neapolitan I've ever had. It had so much ingredients on it rather than focusing on the flavor of the crust. Would could be a good thing because the crust tasted burnt and ashy. I'm not sure if it's because of the time of day I went that the oven had been cooking too long and hot. But, it was very unpleasant and ended up only eating 2 pieces to get a full experience. The staff was friendly however even though the entire restaurant is pretty small. The prices of the food are also pretty reasonable too only like $10-$15 for pizzas. The tastes were good but the water on the pizza made for a very soggy crust. The prices were pretty high in my opinion. This place is so incredibly inconsistent. I've had great pizza's and terrible pizza's here but more bad than good. Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. I won't return. The pizza I ordered was$18.5. I asked for well done and it wasn't. The manager was "par" cooking the dough because I looked behind the counter and saw 3 crusts done that way. The toppings were barely done with sweaty looking pepperoni on top and cheese barely done and not fully melted. Terrible under carriage as well. The waitress did say she would remake them but we didn't have time for that and declined. They weren't busy and I just don't understand with an awesome oven why they can't do it right. We've been wanting to try this place out since it opened but with kids who aren't the biggest pizza fans, it was difficult to do. We finally decided to try it with kids in tow on a Friday night. We arrived around 6:45pm and there were a few tables open. They did a really good job with the inside! It has a rustic feel with a sliding barn door, exposed brick, and nice wood bar. The place is very open and just comfortable to be in. The bathrooms are newly updated and nice (and there's a changing table too). Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. She asked if we'd been there before and when we said no, she explained the size of the pizzas and what her young kids will eat. She took our drink orders and those came back quickly. They do have some good beers on tap. All of the pizzas sounded yummy. I went with the M'Boy. My husband had the Pyra. We ordered the White Margarita for the kids. Made to order pizza can take some time and it did. But, not too long. Our waitress kept us updated on when to expect them. We each liked our pizzas. The kids ate the White Margarita. I really liked the yeasty flavor of the dough and you can tell they use good ingredient in the toppings. Especially how good the cheese was. My husband said he'd have liked his sauce to have had more flavor but otherwise he liked it. Parking is either in the small lot behind or on the street. There is a front and back door. We really did enjoy our time here. The only reason for a 4 and not 5 star rating is we had a $60 bill. That's three pizzas and three alcoholic beverages. Seems pricey for a night of pizza. read more

This pizza is great! It's in a 100+ year old building. When you walk in you see the brick oven burning brightly, fantastic on a 15 degree night. We got the Pyra. It had Kalamata olives, prosciutto, artichoke hearts, and white sauce. Highly recommended. Eat in instead of carry out, the box makes the crust soggy after a short time, as it does to any pizza. Visited this afternoon (Saturday) around 1:40PM and was able to get in on their lunch specials. Love the ambiance of this place. Best pizza place on south side Des Moines. Atmosphere is fun with the brick and open concept. You can watch them make and cook your pizza. As a Norwalk resident, we get excited when new stuff comes to town. Heck, we've been holding our breath for a new Hy-Vee for five years. When I heard there was a wood-fired pizza place coming to town, I could hardly wait! The place was open for less than 2 weeks at the time of my visit. I know there's a learning curve with new staff, and I'm going to be straight with you, besides the convenient lot and street parking, I did not have a great experience. Food - cheese curds taste like they were fried in dirty oil. It had an unpleasant breading and had a fish-like after-taste. The pizza was hit or miss (but a total miss for the rest of my party). The pepperoni pizza wasn't cooked through. Some parts of the cheese was not melted and came out cold. String cheese cold. A cheese pizza (which I guess was placed as a Margherita with extra cheese) was swimming in a pool of water. The Margherita we ordered was burnt. Service- My party consisted of 4 adults, my 2 toddlers, and a child. The waitress didn't acknowledge any of my kids or anything, did not refill my water, but made sure to fill the soft drinks of the other guests. When my father-in-law mistakenly ordered green peppers for a pizza topping, the server, kindly corrected him that they were an "authentic Napolitana Pizzeria." Okay lady.. you got cheese curds and onion rings on your menu. Overall - It really was a 1-2 star experience, but I don't want to give it that low since they truly do use quality ingredients, and I'm hoping this new place gets better over time. It will be a while until I revisit, since my wife and family gag at the thought of their soggy cold pizza. I'm also optimistic to update this review to something positive as the kinks get worked out. read more

What a cute little pizza place! Beautiful woodwork that one of the owners has made by hand. The owners are very hands-on and kind. The amazing smell hit us first when we came in, and we were so looking forward to the food! The pizzas are small, so order one per person unless you are a light eater. They are expensive for the size, but they use imported flour and tomatoes, which you can definitely taste! They are also wood-fired pizzas, which have a distinct texture and flavor as well. We ordered three pizzas, some onion rings to share, and I got a side salad. The onion rings and salad came out first. The onion rings are shoe-string style and super yummy. My side salad was supposed to have mozzarella and croutons, but came out as only iceburg on a plate with cheap ranch. I like house made ranch, but that's a personal preference. The pizzas had amazing flavor and the outside crust was DELICIOUS. We would definitely come back. Our only complaint is that the pizzas were really soggy in the middle. Like, can't pick up slices because they flop over and all the toppings slide off soggy. The fact that the middles were that soggy and we still thought they were so good says a lot about how great the outside crust and the flavors were. I enjoy having this unique pizza option in the Des Moines area. We frequented often for take-out and dine-in pre-covid and have been trying to support when we can during Covid-19 as well. They have been doing a good job with masking and taking precautions through the whole pandemic. If you haven't had their breakfast pizza yet it is a must! It's only available on weekends I believe. It's quickly become a favorite breakfast treat in our house. My only complaints: the cinnamon sticks come with Carmel dipping sauce not icing as I would prefer and sometimes it gets forgotten all together. Also the side of marinara is comically small if you order to go. (We like to order for dipping the crust in but it would take like 4 to be enough for one pizza). Pyra was a breath of fresh air to Norwalk. Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza isn't for everyone, but if you've never tried it, I would encourage you to. Pyra does some interesting combinations, but they're all outstanding. Flavor is excellent, the crust is nice and airy, and the ingredients are of exceptional quality. They legitimately have some of the best olives you'll find around here. Drink options aren't outstanding, but there are options, so there's that. The building was an old hardware store, and Pyra chose to keep the brick walls and some of the old decorations.
