Since it used the same key as the lock in the front door, I thought I would be changing both locks, plus the deadbolt on the front door, so I wouldn't have to carry two keys to the house and wouldn't have to remember which one to use on a dark, cold, rainy night when I had my arms full of packages. I wanted to go to a brick-and-mortar store, not just call somebody who had a listing in the phone book or was carpet-bombing Yelp with spam. Well, Big D Lock City has been in this spot for at least 30 years, according to the guys behind the counter. The same guys also said that they could simply sell me one new lock and key it to the locks I already had, thus saving me a couple hundred dollars and a load of aggravation. (I have a couple friends and family members who have keys to my house, and they would all need to be notified and resupplied.) The locksmith came out the next day as scheduled, finished the job quickly and took my credit card without a hassle. I thought the price was reasonable, but it's not like I called three other shops and compared. I just felt good about the place when I walked in and saw a place that had a timeworn feel to it, a place where they were honest and old-school about their work. If I need a locksmith again, I know who I'll call.

The shop itself is really not on Woodward, but rather in a small side parking lot off the street and out of the way. So id you are looking for a storefront on Woodward, you won't find one. Once I found the store, and brought them my failing lock cylinder, they had it working smoothly in seconds. In fact, they didn't even charge for a repair since the problem was caused by a stuck part that they immediately freed up with WD-40. I did get a new key made, but that didn't cost much at all. They seem knowledgeable and certainly seem to be honest. It is good to know places like this one as craftsmen that know their trade are getting harder and harder to find. Most locksmiths operate in virtual mode now and do not have any retail presence. You can call them to come out to your location to get into your house or car or to get door locks rekeyed if you move into a new location, but they want to come to you and that of course means scheduling and charge for a service visit. I like that nobody came to my house, that I was not charged a mandatory service fee and that I could just walk in and get the job done. I fee comfortable recommending this place to others. Oh, one other detail. I went there expecting to use my credit card, but they had a sign posted saying that their credit card terminal was down. So I suggest bringing cash or a check. I've had instances with Bob in the past where I was taken aback by how rude, confrontational and irrational he was but I certainly didn't think that he would be that way to my poor wife. I feel terrible about sending her there and I would suggest only engaging this company if you've got thick skin and you're ready to walk away shaking your head wondering how they are still in business.
