    Before hair color
    Jen W.

Had my hair dyed from black to grey/silver color - Ms. Chong is an incredible hairdresser who put a lot of time and research into creating my vision! Instead of just a silver/grey color, I also wanted my hair to have some dimensions to it so that it will have a more natural look when it grows out. There were so many different colors mixed in that I couldn't keep track of, but the resulting look allowed my grey/silver hair to reflect other subtle colors under different lighting. It is usually very hard to go from black to a lighter color but Ms. Chong also did a great job in being transparent and explaining the process to me and took care of me well!

went from brunette to SILVER BLONDE!

Went from DARK BROWN to SILVER BLONDE I found about this place when my mom told me. The price of haircuts was ridiculously cheap and I thought, "you get what you pay for." I just moved back from LA and was used to paying a LOT of money for my hair, especially from a Korean salon where they are always cutting edge. But a year later, I moved and this place was closer than my old place, so I figured I would give it a shot. This place is a no-frills, kind of nondescript location where you would not think you are going to get top class service. It's located in a strip mall next to a pizza joint and across from all the car dealerships on Ogden in Downers Grove. The owner, Chong is super delightful. She knows all of her customers by name. There is another stylist, Alice who rents a chair and comes in on certain days. Both are great with being up to date on styles, cuts and color. Alice has two younger daughters who she 'suffers' through their hair with so I find she is a little more trendy in her cuts. I mostly have been just getting my greys covered and they've always used the top formulas: organic Japanese brands, Italian or Korean brands -- depending on what color I wanted. The organic Japanese brand was awesome but it only comes in 4 colors and it is IMPOSSIBLE to cover with anything else (you've been warned!) but it does a FANTASTIC job of covering greys and doesn't damage hair. I highly recommend it as long as you don't want to do highlights or lowlights. Then, a couple years ago, I decided to go back to getting highlights a few times a year. Alice does a phenomenal job at ballayage by hand painting it on, but obviously it takes more time. I got so many compliments on my hair!! Then, I asked about going grey. At this point, because I had been covering my roots for so long, I knew it was going to be a huge process. I did a TON of research and asked about it and realized it wasn't going to be quick, nor cheap so I put it off. But then I decided I didn't want to have to dye my hair every 3 weeks (that's how fast my hair grows) so I bit the bullet and started the process. My starting hair color is shown in the photo as #1. First, they did a huge highlight job where everything was bleached out. You can do 2 processes when you have dark Asian hair - color removal (which is less damaging) or bleach. For various reasons, we had to do the bleach. The total time for numerous strand highlights and bleach was 4.5 hours. I'm not joking. I had to go home and come back two days later to finish. Once the highlights were bleached out, and pretty naturally too (see photo #2), then they overlaid three types of toner to get a 'natural look.' This also blends the grey roots as they come in so it is not as visible, preventing me from having to get my roots done every three weeks. Then of course I got a haircut. Step 2 took another 4.5 hours so the total was NINE HOURS to get it done. But it was well worth it. The final color is shown in photo marked 'final.' I was speaking to my best friend, who is Latina and has dark hair also. She lives in Vegas and noted she just changed to an Asian stylist because of her dark, brunette hair. The original stylist had been using a 'black' hair dye which was not at all her normal color. She said that people who don't work w/ dark hair just don't have enough experience to understand that 1) dark does not equal 'black' (black dye is TERRIBLE to remove or overlay on), 2) red/orange tones come out when you dye or bleach dark hair, so you have to know how to combat that and 3) usually Asian/Latinas have coarser hair textures so you have to be knowledgeable for good cuts. EVEN with nine hours of processing, my hair did not suffer that much damage because Q Hair uses olaplex (you can read all about this) to maintain hair integrity. I highly recommend both of these ladies for your hair. Better to do an appointment vs walk-in if possible. #olaplex #Asianhair #Latinhair #nodamage #brunette #brunettetoblonde #trendyhair #organic #noperoxideformulas #darkhair #silverblonde

I had moved to the area a few years ago and was unable to find someone who can cut my hair the way I wanted it until I found Ms. Chong! I have been going to her now and recently decided to get a perm. I love it! Highly recommend Q Hair.

This was the dream never achieved

I came in looking like Mulan before the matchmaker slapped the lady into her, and came out channeling Misty from Pokémon in the worst way possible because at least she looks hot in a crop top. I opted for a semi generic balayage that was ashy dark brown towards the tips. I screenshotted five pictures that looked incredibly similar, and showed it to the owner. She began to slap on the concoction on aluminum foil and put that stuff in my hair until I looked like I could connect to a wifi router. This was cool with me, so I continued to read All The Light We Cannot See....with ignorance....and bliss... Then I waited for half an hour, got the solution washed out....and my jaw dropped to the floor....because i looked like Halloween: the college girl edition. With my hair going from black to orange....0 to 100 real quick. The owner said she would tone it and add more ash brown. I start feeling uneasy that anything could be done to measure up to the pictures. At this point I was hoping for like 50% resemblance if I was lucky. I was praying for like distant cousin type of resemblance. So not only did the ash part not work out...neither did the brown. My hair was straight up orange, like a lions mane. It was brassier than a spanking new trumpet. By this time, I had been in this place for FIVE hours. But what sent me spiraling into fury was that the owner still charged me basically the full price for using up her hair equipment and her time. Um. Wait a second.......isn't the first rule of customer service that if someone isn't satisfied, you do something about it? Apparently not here. Alas, no voucher, no discount, no shame. Maybe this place is good at cutting hair, but an orangutan with hands tied behind its back could perform a better dye job. And manage to be less orange than it too. The owner claimed that my hair was just so totally relentless, and that despite using an ash color, it still turned out like virginal oranges. I applaud her for trying hard to make it work, but then why charge? #confused Update: Currently at target scrounging for ash products to redye my hair and reverse the raggedy Anne horrendousness. Wish me luck. Pictures of this saga are displayed in all its glory below. If it doesn't work out, I'll start an orchestra with the amount of brass I have in my locks.

Ms. Chong did such an amazing job with my hair! Not only did she color it, she also treated my hair! Now, it looks much healthier and beautiful! I will definitely be coming back here!

I like the color and my hair still feels so healthy!

I love the single process color that the owner did on my hair! See the before and after pics and you will see what I mean. I drive 20 minutes just to come here and get my hair colored because I've gotten such consistent and gorgeous results every single time :)

So, recently I opted to do an at home color myself and was incredibly unhappy with it so I called on Alia Rose to the rescue! I have heard of this salon over the years as I have a couple friends that go here. This is probably one of the prettiest and most well appointed salons I have ever been to. The staff, and I mean the entire staff from the front desk to the colorist and the shampoo girl, were beyond sweet. I had a great experience with Kailey, my colorist. She heard my plight and did an epic job at fixing my mess. I was in the chair for about three hours. A great experience here - I'm very happy with my hair color and I feel like I made a friend. FYI, this place seems to also be popular with young men as much of the clientele on the afternoon I was there were teenage boys and young men. They all seemed happy when the left. This place must be trending in locker room talk lol!

It was nice to see the stylist stations uncluttered with supplies. The establishment was impeccably clean and organized. So, I called ahead and made a same-day appointment. I lost track of time, was 30 minutes late, and still received professional service. I will return on time for my next haircut and possibly a color: today's haircut, eyebrow wax, and tip cost about 100$. Great job, Alia.

A family member had an appointment with the stylist Maureen. The front desk apparently booked the appointment incorrectly, and instead of handling the situation professionally, the stylist appeared frustrated. The service felt rushed, shortcuts were taken, and she was physically rough, pulling on my family member's hair and face in ways that made her uncomfortable. The end result was uneven and not what we expected, and my sister's hair was left noticeably botched. I contacted the manager, Dominic, who initially said he would help arrange a makeup appointment. Instead, he later told my family member he did not believe her concerns and informed her she would no longer be accepted as a client. Only a partial refund was offered for a service that cost nearly $300. UPDATE: the owner, Ron Rocco, called me. He said he was reaching out to help schedule a new appointment, but the call quickly shifted to him saying he did not want to do my family member's hair. Throughout the call, he repeatedly raised his voice and spoke over me, not allowing me to speak. As a younger woman speaking with an older male business owner, the interaction felt intimidating, uncomfortable, and unprofessional. During the call, he also mentioned that he had checked with the stylist to confirm whether my family member had tipped. She had tipped generously, and the comment felt completely unnecessary and out of place. He also stated that he is at the salon every day, which differs from what staff members had previously told us. He mentioned that he was "not threatend of a Yelp review," and I want to be clear: reviews are not threats. They are honest accounts of customer experiences. Everything in this review is truthful and based entirely on firsthand interactions. I also received a notice from Yelp that the business attempted to have my review removed. Key points: --I personally do not feel safe or comfortable returning to this salon. -I do not recommend booking with Maureen based on how she handled this situation. -In my experience, the business did not prioritize customer satisfaction or take accountability. -Management made me feel that customer concerns were dismissed rather than addressed. -The service felt overpriced for the rushed quality delivered. -Several interactions with the front desk staff felt unprofessional and unfriendly. -As a young woman, my interactions with both management and ownership felt uncomfortable and intimidating. -My sister's hair was left uneven and poorly done, which added to the frustration. -The salon seemed willing to tolerate the behaviors and issues we experienced rather than fixing them. -To quote Ron Rocco "Yelp reviews don't threaten me"! So I highly recommend you listen to the ones that are on here. -Because of the stylist's behavior, management's response, and my interaction with the owner, I cannot recommend this salon, especially to other young women or anyone who expects professionalism, respect, and consistency.

People need to know this…read more.. When I first sat in Misha's chair and she asked me what I would like, I am the kind of person who has a hard time describing what that even is. I'm more of a visual person who holds an 'I'll know it when I see it' sort of vibe and someone who isn't very knowledgeable about hair color, hair terminology lingo in how to express what they want. So let me tell you when I say.. Misha makes life a heck of a lot easier for you in that department. One real life example: She went out of her way to check in with me after my appointment to see how I was feeling and if I liked the color. When I realized I had misdirected and misspoken about what I wanted, she, without hesitation, invited me back in to tweak it so it matched my vision. She is really devoted detail-oriented and has such a creative eye. Especially when (no offense to others but) I feel like other hair-stylists can sometimes become defensive if a client wants adjustments, or needs to re-clarify. Whereas Misha never made me feel ashamed or like I couldn't speak up. Even when I misspoke or wasn't sure how to explain what I wanted, she stayed present with me and patient, where I felt like I was treated with care and compassion, not a client to be judged or rushed (especially in today's world) --her customer care is something you cannot teach, and is a lost art. She has that rare mix of technical skill and basic human decency that makes you feel safe asking for exactly what you want. --She ended up knowing exactly how to adjust my color even when I didn't have the right words to describe it. And on top of that... she's just so comfortable to be REAL with. The banter back and forth makes you feel like you're working with the skill set of a high-end runway salon expertise, but in the presence of someone with such warmth that you're being taken care of by a close friend with a homey nurturing atmosphere vibe. I live over 20 miles away, which is not close by, by any means, but she is someone I would go out of my way to see because she's THAT good --in a heartbeat. Guarantee you hair won't be the only thing walking out of that salon feeling like it received the top TLC treatment but your heart will as well. Bonus++ if you happen to meet her dog, Willow, while you're there, that's an extra salon pick me up that will make you wanting to come back again. Highly recommend Misha to anyone looking for a new hairstylist who knows what she's doing and also brings that safe, trusted, home-away-from-home, forever-stylist atmosphere. 10/10, Misha is your girl!

I have always been a reluctant style subject. Since my mom subjected me to cuts by beauty school fiends as a kid, I have always been afraid of change, but Shelli and I had a nice discussion about what I could deal with (i.e. not 50 products and flatirons; I can't even dry my hair without bonking myself in the head repeatedly) and what I was looking for.
