Quail Hill Loop is an easy, relaxed hike that wasn't busy during our visit, though I imagine it gets much more crowded during spring and superbloom season. With the fog and chilly weather, it had an almost European countryside feel, which was a pleasant surprise for Southern California. It genuinely didn't feel like Irvine at all. A big plus is the location. Being so close to Tanaka Farms makes this an easy stop to pair with a produce run, and I can see it becoming part of our regular routine when we're in the area. The main downside: dog owners who don't pick up after their pets. We spent a good portion of the walk playing dodge the poop with our dogs, which definitely took away from the experience. Overall, a lovely trail, just wish people were more considerate.

    Community center - super nice!!!

First time visitor Free parking! No fees! Dog friendly but note certain areas Biking jogger walker hiker friendly Strollers maybe for the paved areas as dirt paths are rocky at times and hilly Smaller free parking lot Community center parking larger parking lot by the fields Before entering the trail there is a kid play / rock climbing are (possible multiple entrances to trail area) Dried and green but trails were visible, signs in green along the way, view of the city and homes and great park balloon Flat paths and some hilly and some rocky, not as difficult but just have good shoes with grip It was mostly overcast but there is not really visible shade or trees so bring a hat and wear sunblock, no trash bins seen on the route Safe for solo Many groups seen Did not across to many wildlife except saw a rabbit various birds but it could be time of year Clean pathways Would certainly come back to venture more

Beautiful two mile loop around the Quail Hill area. Nice vista points and lots of nature to see. Perfect for everyone, from runners to families who want to take their time and see some local flora and fauna. :)

Was looking around for a hike an this popped up. There is parking but it can get busy and hard to find. It is easy to follow and there are signs around. It is a nice loop. Would definitely recommend this to anyone. Would do this again.

Easy parking lot. Arrived 8am in December. Area is not very green, but still a nice hike. Perfect weather! Cool. There is no trees/no shade so I imagine it may be hot midday in the summers, bring a hat! This is a very easy, walkable dirt trail, short loop, can complete within an hour. I saw a couple joggers and couple dog walkers. Watch out for some dog poop on the trail.

Nice, quiet trail in the Irvine Open Space Preserve. The trail is a flat 2-mile loop that you can complete in 30-40 min. Dog-friendly with clear markers. I went on weekend afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all. There is a free parking lot at the trailhead. The trail is usually closed after rain -- you can check the trail's status on the City of Irvine's LetsGoOutside.org website. Across the street there is a nice park called Quail Hill Community Park. The parking lot of Quail Hill also connects to the Shady Canyon Trail, which is paved 4-miles. Overall plenty of dog-friendly walking trails around this area!

Amazing hiking trail located in Irvine. Not steep at all. Just be aware you might see rattle snakes as it's the season for them now! First time here and definitely not the last!

This is a very nice park/trail. Lots of free space, lots of parking. Very nice trails to go walk around. Enjoy the green environment, and the beautiful California weather. Also, this an excellent place to take Family pictures, couples pictures, and even some car pictures lol. Highly recommended park! Kept very clean and very well maintained.

This was a great short trail loop to do. Staggered crowds of people. I think it's a 1.2mile loop so it's short and sweet. Nice views, want to come in Spring or Autumn to see the beautiful blooms. Bring a hat as there is hardly any shade on the trail. Bathrooms nearby and a community center across the street. Parking lot gets full quickly and there is police presence so that is nice as well. A little out of the way with the drive but it is a nice hike!

I've hiked this trail at least a half dozen times. It is great for small groups or solo. There are many options for paths and interconnecting with other trails, it can be an all day adventure of you don't plan your path ahead of time. I usually track about 9.6 miles and it is quite challenging. The trails are shared with mountain bikers so must be heads up as you are walking/running.

One of my favorite trails in Irvine, granted there aren't many, but it's simple and you get a decent burn in. Parking is free but can be limited especially any time after 4pm in the spring and summer hours when everyone is trying to get cardio in. Quail Hill trailhead is a loop that is 1.8 miles. It has some incline but not that serious. I love this trail when you want the hiking experience but don't want to go all out with a hydro pack, etc. I go around 3 times and it makes a solid 5.5 miles. The city views of Irvine and the freeway is also charming.

Tried to walk this trail today for a second time but was closed for maintenance. The first time it was really dry and brown but did get to see some cool spiders and sunflowers blooming. Was excited to visit today as it has been raining and has made the whole trail green. They have a bathroom in the entrance of the trail and conveniently across from different markets incase you want to eat or get some water. Will try again soon to get more info and log my experience.

Are bikes allowed on Quail Hill trail or only hiking?

Yes bike is allowed but challenging

Is there certain hours for the bathrooms?

Hi Heather. The bathrooms are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thank you.

Is there any bathrooms in that park?

Hi there, yes there are bathrooms located in the building next to the trailhead and trailhead parking lot.

    Good for toddler and strollers?

Hi there. The Quail hill loop is not a paved path, and there may be some uneven terrain. A stroller would not be recommended on this trail.

Does one need to register for an activity/event in order to hike the trails at Quail Hill? Or can one just show up the day of to hike the trails that are open?

Hi Benjamin. You can show up when the trails are open with no registration needed for the Quail Hill Loop. Trails are open 7 a.m to sunset. Please visit https://www.cityofirvine.org/open-space-trails/hiking-biking for more information on other… Read more

Does one need to register for an event - that is, for a particular trail - in order to hike that trail? Or can anyone just show up and hike without registering during park hours? I ask because I saw specific event listings and registrations.

No need to register, it's a really short hike and it's "self-guided" tours for those that are interested in additional information. Pretty much anyone can access during their normal open hours.

Does anyone know if the Quail Hill Trailhead is open after the recent fire?

Hi Ken, Thank you for your question. As a result of the Fossil Fire that occurred adjacent to Quail Hill on Sunday, September 15, the Quail Hill Loop Trail will be closed for repairs for approximately three weeks. The cause of the fire remains under… Read more

By doing a little bit of research, we learned it was best to go early - my husband and I got there at 7:45am in October on a Saturday and the lot was already starting to fill up. When we left at 11:30, the lot was very full. There is technically plenty of parking but the busier it is, the farther you would have to go just to get to the trailhead. We had a very good weather for hiking. It was overcast for the first hour or so, and there is shade when hiking along the creek, and it was partly cloudy on our way out. If hiking during the afternoon, I would recommend bringing twice as much water as you think you would need. Overall, the trail was long but not too difficult. The first 3 miles are fairly easy/moderate and only the very end being somewhat difficult because it is steep. We think the total hike was about 7-8 miles round-trip and took 3.5-4 hours at a moderate pace. In October 2025, the falls and creek were dried out after a hot summer and only one storm in months. It made crossing the creek a non-event (only a little mud and puddles in a few areas), but it also meant the waterfalls were non-existent. The trail was still very scenic and a fun hike. The end of the trail is still very beautiful when dry. Note, there are lots of mountain bikers so be alert and stay to the right side of the trail. No bathrooms, trash cans, or water fountains but still very clean; thanks to the regular hikers who help to clean up the trails. Please be kind to others and respectful to nature. Pack it on, pack it out.

Have told mee several times she loves this hike and it's a good hike where it's a bit more busier than other hiking trails that you feel safe to go to. Started the hike a little late morning around 11:15 a.m. and finished right before 12:40 p.m. A little over 4 miles. We went to a much easier hike trail. Where it was much shading area until you enter the hiking trail and then it was full of sun. Luckily it was a bit breezy so wasn't too fully hot. There's different areas to park, some where it's free of charge and they have the main parking where supposedly have av actual public restroom for $ 3. We parked near some residential area. Right before entering the entrance where the trail started, there was about 5 porter potties available. As all hikes there are warning signs of Rattlesnakes, poison ivy, mountain lions etc. Located in Tustin borderline of Orange. Not too far from Irvine Regional park off Jamboree. Will definitely return to hike here and check out the different trails.

When we arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday morning, the paid parking lot was already full. There are very few parking spaces overall in the paid $3 lot. We ended up as Ralph's customers that morning and found a couple of last-minute items that we needed before starting our hike. It was a nice and cool morning with a slight breeze, which was perfect to kick off our hike. We opted to take the easy trail, Borrego Canyon Trail. There is a lot of soft sand through out parts of the trail, similar to a beach like sensation for your walking pleasure. It also felt like a magical forest during some areas with trickling streams. We also experienced some parts full of various sized rocks. This is NOT a child- friendly trail for little ones. As we approached parts that were more desert like, we got closer to the red rocks. There was much anticipation to the end and the trail concludes with what feels like a small dead end as you gaze into the view of the towering red rocks. Going downhill was much quicker and fun. It was an easy trail with some sections that forced me to go slower as I didn't want to slip on some small rocks. There was so much positivity coming from other hikers and bicyclists. So many good mornings shared, it was contagious. Bicyclists are one-way so they are only coming from behind you and so many were thankful for us moving out of their way.
