Over 4 years ago I contracted a chronic, crippling disease called Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR.) I returned for the PT I needed to start functioning better after being extremely ill for many months as my PMR was starting to remiss. I had had a great therapist when it was still Advance Sport and Spine so I started appointments with her again. She had previously successfully treated several other very difficult issues over several years and taught me how to maintain the progress. However, the new owners (FYSICAL) had a policy that therapists could treat only one condition during a visit. The FYZICAL visits were also 5 min shorter, from 45 min to 40 min. Since I had many areas of pain (poly means many), it would have taken years at the rate we were going to deal with all my joint and connective tissue problems. So on the advice of my MD I started a senior fitness class at 24Hr Fitness in Gladstone. I am so happy I found a more successful program. After 3 mos of attending 2-1hr, sessions/week (*with a few missed due to holidays and travel), I realized one day that for the first time in a long time, I could actually stand up from a chair w/o using my arms. I also noticed that my balance was improving. Now I'm 1 year in and despite the extensive damage I suffered, I have improved in virtually every area that was formerly troublesome. I don't understand the policy of only allowing one treatment per visit as I had made such good progress before for equally serious issues. The FYZICAL visits were also 5 min shorter, from 45 min to 40 min. I am so happy I found a more successful program, however I do miss my previous therapist. Jen is not a cookie-cutter physical therapist. Her approaches are not "traditional," but as a structural therapist, I immediately recognized Jen's deep integrative knowledge and her boldness in carrying it into her work. She helped connect a childhood head injury to my current symptoms--something other professionals completely missed--and she helped uncover obvious (to her) surgical scar tissue impacting mobility and movement patterns. Jen is one of a rising minority of young PTs who elect not to go into traditional institutional PT, because they refuse to "forget" what they actually know about the body in order to fit into a corporate insurance model. Jen's practice stands out for being truly integrative and holistic while completely grounded in science and pragmatism. I cannot recommend her enough.

Her approach was gentle, thoughtful and thorough and we discovered that my C-section scar was behind a lot of my low back pain as well. I was so excited about this place after my free consultation. They seemed to have a great approach…read moreto physical therapy, offering solutions for mobility and injury prevention in addition to more traditional strengthening protocols. During my first appointment, I did a consultation with Jessica. We spoke about my history with knee pain from skiing, and then moved into an assessment on the table. Without any kind of prep, she initiated muscle scraping on my entire leg, which was one of the most painful things I've had to endure. She said nothing to the effect of "we're about to do some muscle scraping, are you familiar with this?" or "this may be painful" or "it can cause pretty serious bruising and tenderness." She just got the tools and went right in. It was excruciating, and I found the total lack of preparation unprofessional and alarming. I was left with huge bruises up and down my leg for days; this was 2 days before a birthday trip where I'd be in a bathing suit, during which I had a massage I needed to cancel due to the tenderness of the massive bruises. Had I been prompted about the severity of this procedure, I likely would have declined or opted for a less intense massage approach (which was what I had explicitly asked for in my consultation and the beginning part of my assessment with Jessica, as massage therapy has helped me a great deal before). My first visit ended with some ultrasound therapy, which was more pleasant. Despite the intensity of the scraping, I was at least interested in the fact that this PT (the fourth clinic I've been to in 2 years) was performing more manual therapy than the others. I figured that I would give it a shot. At my second visit, we did more muscle scraping, and no ultra sound therapy. I was quickly passed off to another therapist to do some hip strengthening exercises, and halfway through she had to ask me which side my injury was on. She didn't seem super prepared to help me, and then brought me to the front desk to wrap up my appointment with 20 minutes still left in the hour. That appointment cost me $168, as my insurance does not cover PT until after I've hit my deductible, so I was feeling a bit shortchanged. I asked if I could be charged for fewer PT units due to the shorter appointment, and the therapist instead took me back to do some stretching. I had arrived to my second appt with some hip pain, and the therapist showed me a stretch that aggravated that pain. Upon telling her that I was in pain, and not in a tight muscle kind of way, she said "yeah, you'll feel that" and dismissed it. I left that appointment in more pain than when I arrived. I am super disappointed in the care I received here.

She was a great listener and she took the time to really hear what was driving my health issues and work through my symptoms with me. She helped me figure out many of my symptoms were related to an autoimmune thyroid issue and food sensitivities.
