It's an Olympic Track and Field Stadium, turned into a soccer stadium, turned into a baseball stadium for a weekend for the New York Yankees v Boston Red Sox London Series. 385 feet to dead center. Huge amount of foul territory, making my over $400 USC seats (per seat per game), a HUGE ripoff.

Olympic stadium is a great venue to do a show in. The load in and out was fairly easy. Plenty of rooms backstage for all your needs. Easy to find your way around as well. It's big and open so the sound is good inside the stadium. Massive pitch so you can have a crap load of people on the ground. Massive thumbs up for this stadium

So, day 2 of the London 2012 Oympics and my family and I hit the Olympic Park to watch hockey at the Riverbank Stadium. As it will be our only visit to the Olympic Park site, we were very excited to be able to visit this regenerated corner of East London where the majority of the £9 billion budget was spent It was an early start as our session started at 8.30am but the Jubilee line train was quite full, taking spectators to the Olympic Park. Once again, there were lots of volunteers to guide and cajole visitors in the right direction - it's a little more complicated than at the O2, oops sorry Olympic branding police, the North Greenwich Arena However, on our arrival, the sun was out and when bathed in sunlight, London can look quite lovely. Perhaps buoyed by the weather, some of the volunteers even tried to gee up the crowd with American style questions like,"How y'all doing?" and "Are you having a good time?" However, due to English reserve (politer term for cynical diffidence!), this had limited sucess but fair dos to them for trying to inject some spirit into the morning The walk to the main gates felt a little claustrophobic with the number of people walking up but once at the gates, the multiple security checkpoints and large entry gangways really swallowed up the crowds. Once again, 100% kudos to the British troops who were all doing their jobs with a huge smile despite having holiday cancelled at the last minute to provide security Once through the gates, the excitement builds as you catch your first glimpse of the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatic Centre. I'm not a fan of the Orbit and while it looks a little better in real life, it still really jars with the rest of the buildings on the site, which have an understated elegance to them. I'm glad that the British haven't tried to take on the magnificence of Beijing's stadia - the Bird's Nest and Water Cube will be hard for any city to beat, even without the added strain of an economic recession. Instead, the buildings are pretty enough and will swell your pride if you're British and view them in person I'm not sure if the main stadium's design was specifically designed to resemble a crown in the year of the queen's diamond jubilee but this is what it looks like to me. The Aquatic Centre's low curved roof profile may have caused difficulties in the sightlines for some spectators inside but it looks elegant from the outside. The other building which deserves a special mention is the 'Pringle', the velodrome whose shape does indeed resemble the famous snack but whose nickname probably annoyed the Olympic branding police as it wasn't an official Olympic sponsor! One warning for spectators coming to events is that the site is huge and it may take you 20-25 minutes to walk from the main gate to your stadium. Another thing which isn't emphasised enough in my opinion is that the stated start time on your ticket is when the sport begins but aim to get there about 20-30 minutes beforehand as there are interesting introductions to the sports/teams/warmups to watch The Riverbank Arena, where we watched the hockey today, was one of the less grand venues and the temporary nature of this stadium is obvious from the scaffolding structure which holds the seating and is visible as you take your seat. However, the pitch itself is a top class water based astroturf and sightlines are good. We watched 2 good matches between Aus v NZ and Holland v Belgium. The yellow ball showed up well on the blue pitch and there was a large TV screen to watch replays and video challenges (yes, football, are you watching as other sports adopt technology?) Once again, a slight weakness was in not explaining the rules of hockey as I heard a lot of comments from around me from people who were obviously new to the sport. Otherwise, top class organisation and there were a lot of things going on before and after the games as well as during half time to keep people occupied That didn't stop the crowd from initiating several Mexican waves and even my mum and dad joined in with these Being a London Games, inevitably the rain did arrive at lunchtime and that exposed the Olympic Park's major flaw - lack of shelter and this is what loses it a star. Suddenly, a very crowded Olympic Park turned into a mass of wet, squidgy mass of humanity who headed straight for the cover of the adjoining Westfield Stratford Shopping Centre, which couldn't really cope with that number of people. We didn't get even close ot finding anywhere to eat or sit for a coffee that didn't have a soul destoryingly long queue and so headed home By the way, be aware that there is no re-admission. Once you've left the Oympic Park, you can't get back in unless you have a ticket for another event However, we still had a brilliant time and I'm still pinching myself to know that I've been to an Olympic Games. I suppose I'll realise that when I'm paying off the Olympic debt on my local taxes for the next 30 yrs

A lovely stadium with comfortable seating. The entire complex is huge and includes a gigantic mall, with an outdoor section, amusement park rides, and nature trails. You could easily spend and entire day here. Food/drinks inside the stadium have inflated prices but I find that to be typical of most of these types of facilities.

Oh just as I get hooked, it's all over! This is a brilliant stadium. It's easy to get to (entails a bit of walking, but nothing too strenuous), easy to find seats and comfortable. It's also HUGE! With 80,000 people there at any one time, I was worried about loo access, but not once did I have to wait at all for the loo - I walked straight into a empty cubicle every time. Either the rest of the crowd has excellent bladder control, or it's just very well designed! Not sure how I went from olympics to bladder control there... There were lots of handy stands all around the stadium offering loads of different types of food and drink and of course, merchandise! The seats all seemed to have good views, they were comfortable and very easy to get to, as you enter at the middle tier and can walk up or down. All in all, good job and well done Team GB!

A very good place, a great view of the game, perfectly clean toilets. There were only hold-ups at beer stalls. The organisation of the way from the stadium was a little scary, but that wasn´t caused by the Park, but by the people around it :( Výborné místo, skvělý přehled o hře, perfektně čisté toalety, jen u stánků s pivem maličko nestíhali. Strašidelná pak byla organizace cesty ze stadionu, ale to už není problém té stavby, spíš troubů okolo :(

Everything about the Olympic Park was enormous! Enormous venues, enormous amounts of space between venues, enormous "mega store" for all your souvenir needs (with an enormous queue to prove it), enormous crowds, and the most enormous McDonald's! Despite some of the "good" and "bad" of those enormous things, I loved it all, for god's sakes it is still the freakin' Olympics!!! I visited the Park one day during our visit. We had tickets for a diving event in the afternoon. We arrived mid-morning in the hopes of being able to check out the scene and soak it all in. We arrived via the West Ham stop and proceeded to walk about 20 minutes to the entrance of the park. Arriving early paid huge dividends. We were able to stroll about without the huge crowds we would encounter later on. That was a huge bonus! We walked up and down the main concourse checking out the different venues and snapping photos without a herd of people attempting to walk through the photos. Since our tickets were not for track and field, we did not get inside the stadium, but used the lovely riverside walkway to catch a different view (it was also particularly helpful when we were leaving as virtually no one was walking on it). Though I do not have much to compare it to, I left impressed. In particular, you could see the seeds of the permanent sustainable park taking shape, while marveling at the temporary nature of some of the venues. I left thinking that this was a well-planned set of venues and hopefully is cherished by Londoners in the years to come.

This is one of my favourite parks, maybe my experience here with the Olympics will always be special to me. There are lots of free spaces for you to have a picnic on a sunny day today and enjoy strolling the park... There are lots of coffee shop places selling coffee tea, ice cream and sandwiches however I recommend getting some food from the supermarket (marks and spencer/ waitrose) and get something there.. They have boat tours and peddle boats of you have the energy and want a workout.. The aquatic center is open for anyone who fancy doing a leg or so.. On a sunny day that's the best option to cool down. There's lots to do and to be honest the new helter-skelter I really want to try the slides down the sides.. I haven't managed to do the whole Park but there's lots of building work at the moment and they do run free events and paid events in the Olympic stadium. Definitely recommend a visit.

Everyone gives this stadium a hard time...which I can see from moving from the infamous Boleyn Ground. However, we enjoyed it for what it was and were lucky enough to catch a West Ham-Tottenham match. The atmosphere for the match was electric and highly enjoyable. One negative is the track around the outside of the pitch, forcing the seats further back. It's very similar to what you would see in Ligue 1.

Would be a great place to bring a picnic or play with the kids. Even bring your iPad or a book and chill out on the grass. The orbit sculpture stands proud here and worth the cost to ride to the top for amazing views. The whole park is a great place to stroll.

Olympic Park. A very good place to spend time. There is a monument / structure that you can go up and it costs £15. There is a good connection to the underground and there is a shopping centre with lots of top end shops. You could at least have lunch in one of the many restaurants there on the ground floor. Great escape if the weather lets you down.

And apparently that happens when they score (not that I would know since it's an ever-elusive occurrence during my visits). It's just me, because I had to get used to an event that's more like a 2-act musical with Intermission. Good luck using the toilet in that 15 minutes, especially if you're trying to grab a drink and a bite while you're out there. I thought "surely I'm in the women's line" but no, we're all out here in line because nobody could live with themselves if they missed the only score of the night while in the loo. Enough of that. The staff are "helpful" as they help you not sit in the wrong seat. This is good because so many people think they're the only smart ones trying to sit down close in *not their seat. This is Britain, people, have some decorum and queue for your proper seat. The match was spectacular. I love nill-zed events. The pitch was immaculate. Don't you think of putting one toe on that perfect turf. The hometown boys were raucous. There can't be too much singing. The away fans were spunky. They also love not seeing their team score. But a fun time will be had by all. Secret tip: leave 2 mins before stoppage time and beat the maddening crowds back to the tube for a happy night back home. Or stay out till all hours celebrating. One day you'll win it all (maybe even this year).

First-Hand Experience: I've seen Millwall play a couple of times as a kid and only once as an adult. I've been to both the new and old dens and I have to say the new one is more impressive. The team... well in terms of how intense and rabid the fans are, they score a 5. But in terms of the racism and fascism elements and their violence and hooliganism issues, they score a 1. So it balances out to a 3. They're one of my least fave teams, and even though this stadium was used in Dream Team as the home of Harchester United, it's still not anything special to me with open-ended sides and such. It creates an intimidating atmosphere of course. It was built in 92 for 16 mil, and is the pride of South East London, with a capacity of around 20k.

First-Hand Experience: More info about my personal experience at this stadium - I've watched one match at the New Den, in 2011 - it was half full which was a shock, and might be the reason why it only gets 4 stars. I'd heard about the rabid, evil Millwall fans, and seen them so many times away from home, and once in their old stadium as a younger lad. Not the case on the day I was here, but then the opponent was a lowly and unexciting adversary. It's a good stadium though, not as expensive as some of the others in London, by a long shot. I enjoyed my day, I was covered from the rain by the stands, I didn't get stabbed (people used to say that's what happened at Millwall games), and altogether I found it a lot more pleasant and also underwhelming than expected. I'll try it again for a much bigger game, one of these days... to see what the fuss is really about. So when I was doing my first tour of Scotland in 2011, I also hit up every single stadium in the country. My obsession with footy (soccer to Americans) is the reason. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to most of them yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at many of them, which I will post later. Yep living near the Park is paying off nicely at the moment - my new local council swimming pool is none other than the Aquatics Centre! It's been open to the public for the last few weeks and I have to say it's a pretty special venue - I still get tingles every time I walk in. It's £4.50 per swim session for an adult and there's an easy peasy online system to book in advance. There are 2 full size pools inside - the Competition Pool for the hardcore swimmers and the Training Pool where they separate the lengths into two 25m sections. Personally I found a 50m pool to be ridiculously long in real life (my superwoman stamina is a err work in progress) so I tend to do laps in the 25m lanes. You choose a pool and a start time online but it's pretty lax once you're in, and you can stay as long as you like. The water is a nice slightly warm temperature and it's usually a uniform 1.2m depth all the way along (though somehow they can change the depth of different sections - the mind boggles!). It's not all lanes - there are also sections of the pool roped off for 'fun' as well as swimming lessons. Also saw signs for a total wipeout stylee 'Splash Time' for kiddies at weekends that sounded like great fun if anyone wants to lend me a child?! The reason it misses a 5th star is that the changing rooms and shower facilities are just not that great. It's spacious yes and there are plenty of cubicles, hairdryers and lockers, but the layout is a little confusing (quite a wander from the lockers to the female showers), they seem to have too many staff/cleaners milling around not doing much, and the showers themselves seem temperamental and need you to wave a hand past every 3 seconds. Is this how Michael Phelps showered?! (*pauses to enjoy the mental picture*) Ahem. Yeah I expected better. So remember to bring your own towel+toiletries, a plastic bag for your wet cozzie (I haven't spotted a drying machine yet) and a £1 coin for the lockers. I attended London Stadium for the first time on the opening day of the season to watch Manchester…read moreCity defeat West Ham United 5-0 - as a Manchester City fan I was delighted with this win, however, I was also impressed by the stadium its-self. Located in Stratford, it's probably one of the easier stadiums to get too in London especially considering the nightmare I had earlier on in 2019 at the Tottenham Hotspur Station, Stratford Station which has multiple railway, tube and DLR services is not too far away and just a short walk through Westfield gets you to Queen Elizabeth Park where the stadium is located in. - Do bear in mind however that this cut-through is closed after the game for away fans, which meant it doubled the length of time it took me to get to the stadium, to get out - but with a capacity of 60,000 when the match is even close to sold-out, they do need to do something even if it does bring inconvenience. Back to my review - This is one of the newer stadiums in English football which was built for the London Olympics of 2012 with West Ham moving in for 2016, there has been some debate for whether the stadium is built for football however I really did like my view from the away end but people who weren't as lucky as me and were sat far back were so far away from the pitch - it was ridiculous. It would be a lie to say this stadium was built with football in mind as it was originally for the Olympic games, but surely more planning on what would happen to the stadium would have been better - just look at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, despite being built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and also having a running track around at first, that is a beautiful, spectacular stadium which was indeed a proper football stadium of the modern era. The staff around the stadium seemed really friendly and didn't mind having a chat to me about my journey up from Manchester, the game and taking me to my seats - the bag policy here is probably the best out of any stadium in London, especially compared to Wembley who seems to hate bags of any sort with some of the most restrictive policies I've seen in a ground. I liked how they had two big screens at either end, similar to Wembley in that fashion (the shape, size, location) but they did mess up on two occasions 1. The VAR replay which disallowed a City goal actually shown a different player instead of the player who was supposed to be offside which added controversy to the whole system especially with it being the first season with VAR. 2. It just seemed like a regular game, I'm used to the Etihad making the first game a little special but here that just didn't happen. Safety could have possibly been an issue with the home and away fans being so close together - which was much worse compared to any new build football which once again could be down to it not being a football built stadium. The atmosphere of the stadium again lacked to Upton Park on that front - again it's another sad example of these modern new stadiums in many ways alienating fanbases with the atmosphere declining - but the stadium now is in a much better location and does look better. A pretty underrated stadium in my opinion and amongst the best in the Premier League for the fan experience, overall feel of the stadium and catering towards disabled supporters (located in the middle without an awful view at the back or front) - the concourse area could be better designed but still a great stadium, which I much prefer to the new, costly Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (what a waste of £1 billion pounds) 4*

The London Stadium is fine as a football stadium, but it could've been so much more as a brand new…read moreground. The biggest problem lies in the fact that the pitch is so far from the stands. This does nothing to help the atmosphere, even when the chances are flying in. Having the stands right up to the goal just makes such a difference. I really think West Ham missed out on this when it was built. On the bright side, concessions are reasonably priced by US marks at least (£10 will get you a beer and a sausage) and it was surprisingly easy to get into the stands quickly and efficiently, given the multiple entrances. It's also not the most convenient to get to. Yes there's a tube stop nearby, but it's a good 15 minute walk to the actual ground, and far longer going back as people are held back so as to not overcrowd the tube. I saw a game here and then a game at Wembley the next day, and the process was so much simpler at the latter. The stands at Wembley are also much closer to the pitch, showing that it's easily achievable for a large, bowl shaped stadium to be built in such a way. Now, this review has nothing to do with West Ham's performance, but I can't help feel that the poor home record isn't being helped by the poor atmosphere, due to poor planning.

Once upon a time, 75k could squeeze in here and it was Europe's biggest league stadium, but Charlton underachieved so it fell into disrepair. Charlton even had to share Selhurst Park for ages while the Valley was renovated. Luckily three sides of it are complete now and it's an absolutely magnificent venue in the heart of SE London. It just needs one more stand to be "done up" and then it'll be finished, and one of the best grounds in London and the country. But it's already pretty fantastic. First-Hand Experience: Yelp asked me to include more information about my personal experience at this stadium, so here it is. I've been to the Valley twice (I think), once on my 2014 stadium tour of England (and I took pix), and once to watch a game when I was younger (Oxford United away). Lovely stadium indeed. I've been to virtually every significant stadium in the UK & US, due to a lifelong obsession with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born and raised in England, I followed Oxford United (my hometown team) to many stadiums all over the country at away games, and later followed Liverpool (my fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from personal experience at these stadiums from multiple visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited these stadiums then, also. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in the UK for 3 months, I visited all of the stadiums as I travelled around the country. I have pictures of many of them which I will post in future. Also, when I'm back in the UK I plan to take more pictures, and add more stadiums too! So watch this space! *** return to regular review *** There is a very romantic story about how the stadium was built: The club found an abandoned sand and chalk pit in Charlton, but did not have sufficient funds to fully develop the site. An army of volunteer Charlton supporters dug out a massive pit for the pitch, and used the soil from the excavation to build up the sides. The ground's name most likely comes from its original valley-like appearance. The club played its first game at the ground before any seats, or even terraces, were installed; there was simply a roped-off pitch with the crowd standing or sitting on the adjoining earthworks. The unique circumstances of the ground's initial construction led to an unusually intense bond between the club's supporters and the site that exists to this day. How romantic is that?
