((4.25 stars for the tacos))…read more it's been a minute since i have been to Ben's Deli. ownership changed; renovated, and have expanded their deli / grill offerings while reducing their taco offerings. if you didn't know Ben's just a few years ago was an old school deli / corner store where there would be different taco pop-ups serving up a limited menu of the Mexican street food. these days Ben's is a new modern looking deli / mini grocery that still serves tacos but just chicken or beef, now. the tacos are made from scratch, so you getting fresh food which takes a little bit more time than your typical fare. for some reason you can only order tacos in twos or threes, but you can't order three tacos without ordering a can of soda. ordered a trio of beef tacos which were well worth the wait. the tacos use thinly shaved flakes of seasoned beef; topped with chopped onions, a sprinkling of cilantro, & thin slices of avocado; and each taco is double tortilla'ed bc each taco is filled to the max. slices of limes are included. the beef is savory, moist, and flavored well. the double layer of corn tortillas taste like actual corn. the onions add texture and the avocados add smooth fattiness. the tacos are fresh hot food. the rest of Ben's outside of the tacos is pretty a standard deli/grocery; large menu of cold and hot foods; shelves filled with a variety of snack foods, refrigerated units filled with soft drinks and adult beverages plus some household goods. though i wish the taco menu had options like carnitas or al pastor and more from the past. i do find it strange that you can only order two tacos w/ no soda OR three tacos with a soda--no solos or a trio without soda. weird policy, but the taco guy made an exception for me and didn't force me to get a soda. there was a a back-n-forth with the cashier who wanted to charge me whether I got a soda or not. strange. but hey whatever...the tacos here are good and make for a satisfying dinner or lunch! not sure if the tacos are just a permanent part of the deli offerings or it's just a pop-up, but either way...it's a worthwhile stop for the tacos if you're hungry.

I'm not sure how they managed to fit 4 different food vendors along one side of the wall--kinda blows my mind--Mao's Baos, Kimbap Lab, Tea&Milk, and Pearl River Mart Little Eats. I'll be honest I haven't tried the kimbap or baos mostly because I'm not used to paying quite so much for them, though to be fair for the location it's not out of reason considering a single slice of pizza upstairs at Filaga is like $9.** As for the grocery itself, while they're slightly more pricey than other Chinatown groceries that might carry some of the same products, for the exposure and location, again it's pretty reasonable. They carry a mix of food and condiments from different Asian cultures too--for the most part Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, and some Asian American items*. *these may have origins in traditional Asian cuisine with an American or Western influence that makes it different or maybe more understandable or palatable to non-Asian culture, or truly straight up Asian foods that are branded in English. **let's not even get into the convo of why certain cultures' cuisines are considered "fancier" or affixed a higher perceived $ value than others. Their beer selection on the other hand is pretty decent lots of different beers to choose from. Also this place has a huge selection of scratch off lottery tickets at all times. Probably the best and biggest selection in the area. I always see people playing numbers in here. Another plus is they often have fresh flowers especially during any major holidays and they're much cheaper then actual flower shops. This place usually stays open pretty late and is right by the corner bus stop.

You will (most likely) find your commonly used staples for your household in addition to seeing some good deals. I must admit that their fruit salads are fresh and tasteful. I had a few bad experiences at C-town on Pitkin Avenue where their fruits would spoil like nobody's business and their prices for products would make even a rich person say "what the hell?!" Shopfair, so far, has not served me a plate of disappointment yet as far as their fruits. I have been finding myself walking to this supermarket during lunchtime so it wouldnt really hurt to give them the extra star (three stars in total).The two-star deduction is just for aesthetics of the supermarket, lack of space or the "cluttered feeling" in the aisles, not too many exciting food options and mediocre food bar.
