The place is closed, I tried to call them 3 times; there's no answer! Don't waist your time going there!

Easy to see why the reviews here are all over the board. This place is part hot mess, part disorganization--I'm being kind, and part dismay--wondering how it is they are still in business. Come at your own risk. And after saying that, I'll likely return, but bear with me. Tuesday: tried calling to make sure they were open as their hours were advertised as 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. every day of the week. Couldn't get an answer on a Tuesday so thought maybe just busy, took the subway down and walked the nearly mile one way, arriving at 4:30 p.m. Locked, not open. I call several times, finally get an answer: "we open at 6:00 p.m." Nope, not waiting around so away I go. Next day, Wednesday, around 5:00 p.m. start calling, get busy signals continuously, no answer. Arrive at 6:00 p.m., not open. Busy signals continue. Wait until 6:30 p.m., still closed, decided to go for a walk around the block and if they aren't open when I return I'm done. Return at 6:40 p.m., the door is open. WTF? Guy at the desk is 1st grade English level at best, but nice. Tries to explain what's available. Main hot sauna is out of order (turns out being totally rebuilt and looked quite nice). Other hot sauna out of order as well. Steam room working, he says "not very warm," which is correct. It's a freaking lung choking oven that when at full blast you can see about a foot. I sit near the door. Only three other people in the entire building I can see and two are in the pool, someone giving a swimming lesson to a kid and mister Eastern European. I keel over and I'm dead in 60 seconds. Obviously, this written just before that occurred. Kidding. I go in and out spending maybe 30-40 minutes in there. That purged the Burmese, Malaysian, Tibetan, Bangladeshi food downed earlier in the day. The "cold" pool mentioned by others was lukewarm. The hot whirpool just a little warmer than lukewarm, the main pool about what I'd expect. And alas, no one on staff to deliver the famed banya beating with branches. The story I came to experience will wait until another time. This place is frozen in time, say 1960. I saw no food being served but some that was left over on a dining table apparently from the day before or earlier. More of the hot mess. Finally, I chat with the guy running the place and he concedes things are in disarray, apologizes, says only pay what I wish. I gave him $20 for what was to be a $35 fee. And yes after all that, I'm sort of intrigued. If and when things hit all cylinders here, and a friend said they do, I can see it being pretty cool. Otherwise it operates about like I'd think a lot of things operate in Eastern Europe. One thing for sure, had there been vodka around after this experience, I'd have been into it. I'm not someone that likes vodka, but this experience made me want to do shots like a bunch of Russians doing the best to pickle their livers. To be continued. Maybe. If you come: I'd suggest bring cash only. Call ahead. They don't tell you they're open, don't show up. Looking for an upscale Hilton spa? This, most assuredly, is not it. read more

I've been to multiple Russian baths and only go to this one because of location. This sauna has so much potential but unfortunately owners are not up to date with hygienic practices and how to upkeep facility. Towels are usually not available and staff is no where to be found. Also I ordered a pot of green tea and not exaggerating the water had tasted like the cedar wood of the sauna. They also give you one low quality green tea bag for a huge pot of stale sauna water. Makes no damn sense lol. Cleanliness is definitely a factor here...I'm questioning why my towel out of the dryer has a shit stain and if they even wash their towels or just throw them in the dryer. Overall food is a no-no here save your money, service is whatever, just a decent place to sweat out the BS. read more

Love this place!! Been coming here for years. Even bought a ten pack a few years back, and am currently down to my last visit. I usually come here with Michael K. and some other straphangers we choose to call that day. Most recent trip here was on one of the last days of the Jewish holiday of Passover. It was a friday and i was off work. Thats quite a rarity, so why not enjoy life with a little water, steam, and jacuzzi. The place is a mere 5-10 min drive from where I live. Warning: Parking is difficult in this area so pray for the best and expect to spend almost your whole day here for those who like to relax and zone out the outside world. You can spot the entrance right off Calloway Street with a huge sign that reads "Forest Hills Spa" all nice and colorful. The place is quite big as far as Russian banyas go and is one of the few that has a long swimming pool. This is lacking in some Brooklyn banya competitors. So definitely a plus for queens. For me, A typical day in this banta consists of Sauna, pool, jacuzzi, cold plunge , steam room, play cards and REPEAT, literally. This may sound boring to some, but its definitely better with the right company and people who like to enjoy actually "relaxing". The sauna can reach great temperatures in heat, especially if someone decides to turn their towel into a propeller (ahemmm...haimov). After that, you can either chicken out and go straight to the pool or BE A MAN and enter the cold plunge of DOOM ( ominous music). Its cold as Hell. Probably a bad metaphor b/c Hell is supposed to be well, Hottt... So to reiterate, the sauna can get HOT as HELL, the temp in the pool is tepid, and the "cold pool" is exactly what it sounds like. Don't sleep on the steam room either, it can get quite toasty and uncomfortable in their too, given the duration of time you spend. Food here is good , particularity the cornish hen meal. I usually get it and split it with someone b/c its a big portion. Pairs well with israeli/fresh salad, french fries and ooo yes Baltika #7, a well known Russian beer. Admission fee runs $30 for adults, for the whole day. Package deals available and friendly staff always around. OOOOOOO, don't forget to enjoy a nice jet-stream aqua-laced massage in the jacuzzi, it can get all those kinks out in your back , if you position yourself the right way. I went there about a bunch of times, but the last time was it for me. I saw 2 twitching cockroaches, and the hot tub was filled with floating dirt and hairs. The small place is usually crawling with children who are often unsupervised-not how some like to relax. There was a man on his phone in the pool talking loudly and letting his kid THROW A BALL at people's heads. It can be a nice time IF there's nobody there, the staff is full and the facilities are all clean. The staff is nice, but there's no enforcing of rules of conduct or sanitation. The hours of operation are inconsistent, parking is a nightmare, and people leave food everywhere. Now I just travel to NJ and spend the day at SOJO. read more

First, this place is called "Russian Baths and Restaurant" or "Russian Banya in Queens" (in Russian). Forest Hills Spa doesn't appear anywhere on the premises, though it does say that on the website [http://foresthillsspa.com/]. We've been to a number of Russian Baths in Brooklyn and the Spa Castle Korean mega bath complex in College Point, so when we found this place online, we wanted to check it out. It is fairly modest, more of a neighborhood bath house, with a club-y feel, than a destination. Most customers seemed to be locals. There are 2 saunas: Finnish (Dry) and Russian (more humid) as well as a steam room. All were fairly small, steam room didn't have space for more than 5-6 adults. There is a good size pool, great for kids, plus a pretty big jacuzzi and a very cold plunge pool. The Russian sauna was very, very hot - one of the hottest we've ever experienced. The Finnish was hot, but not extreme. Jacuzzi water looked like it had not been changed in a while, but we enjoyed it anyway. Pool was very refreshing. There's a small restaurant/cafe just off of the pool. We didn't eat, but had tea and other drinks, which were fine. They have a good selection of drinks, beer, wine. People seemed to be enjoying food. We felt biggest drawback was lack of sufficient seating areas for families or groups. We've been to Sandoony USA in Brooklyn many times where there are dozens of tables around the pools where you can relax, read, eat between your sauna sessions. This place had a few tables for 2, a few for 4 and a lot of single chairs against a wall facing the pool. Not a great place to hang out. On the other hand, people were relaxing in the restaurant/cafe which was bright and comfortable. Two other things diminished the experience: 1) locker rooms are tiny! Barely room for 6 people to change. 2) there isn't really a proper entrance, you walk in off the street right into the main room with the pool. On the other hand, we were able to bargain for a discount at the front desk, got one free admission for our group of 6. We might go back, the saunas and pools were fine, but wouldn't rush and wouldn't go with a large group. Would be fine with one friend. It is easy to get to by car, just a few blocks from the intersection of 495 and the Grand Central Parkway. On street parking was not hard to find. read more

The previous reviews about this place were accurate - the entrance is right off the street, the Russian room is crazy hot, the cold tub is actually really cold, and all the rooms are fairly small. I went on a Weds afternoon so there was plenty of room, though I can imagine it being uncomfortably packed on the weekend. Everyone here was super nice and there was a good mix of families, young people, and old Russian guys. The cold pool looked a little dingy but everything else looked really clean. My favorite part was the "real" sized swimming pool. Other bath houses I've been to have no swimming pool (and no jacuzzi, in the case of the Russian & Turkish bath house in the village), so Forest Hills Spa beats them both on that note. I also had the borscht, which was surprisingly flavorful and tasty for spa food. I will definitely be back here. It is pretty far out of the way for me (2 trains and a bus!) but I found it to be totally worth it. read more

A great spa, in my experience. I visited on a chilly evening in December, and left wonderfully warmed. The building was clean, simple, and comfortable. Likewise, the attendants I interacted with were friendly and accommodating, making me feel right at home. As for the facility itself, I couldn't ask for more in a Russian bath: a dry sauna, a wet sauna, multiple dipping pools, a big locker room and secure lockers -- the works, and all at a reasonable price! I had zero issues during my time there, and would gladly return. My sincere thanks goes out to all associated with this business. I am grateful for, and have benefited from, your work and service. I am regular Spa goer and this place has it pros and cons. There's no fancy entrance or anything so when you arrive at the bottom of the steps you are in. I would not want to experience how drafty that could become in winter. At the request of my daughter we went on a Sunday evening. There were several couples and a family or two. There were children everywhere. I love children, but they rarely make for a relaxing time at the Spa! Not a plus for me. When getting a massage I became distracted by the shouting -- from the kids in the fairly large pool, over the music provided by Vladimir my "Massage Therapist". We only opted for massages because we had Groupons that made it sound reasonable. Also Vladimir browbeat us at the door, once we asked the desk guy about massage prices. Our 2 for one Groupons also included $15 off any service. I am not one to pass on a $35 deep tissue massage for 30 minutes. I told him to give me 30 minutes before I would join him. The locker room/ shower/ bathroom was small and could barely hold 5 ladies at once, but it was clean. The shower heads were of the Kohler Rain shower type, and the shower itself contained a small bench built into the wall. There was not fancy lotion or soap but they did offer soap in a dispenser in the showers. The main room housed the pool/jacuzzi and cold plunge pool as well as the restaurant and several seating areas for eating and a few for just sitting. Besides the wooden areas for eating with benches, the other seats were just hard plastic outdoor seats and two lounge chairs. The steam room was the smallest I have ever witnessed. Looked like a closet, but it can get very hot and filled with lovely steam. When some one puts a pot of eucalyptus leaves in there, it gets nice. The dry and moist sauna rooms also got nice and hot which was the highlight of the evening. After you are ready to rest a bit there are limited spaces to do so in. There's a wooden bunk bed type resting area for 4 people at a time, which is actually comfortable. If someone is there when you are ready to lay down, you are simply SOL because your only other option is one of the two existing hard plastic lounge chairs at the pool. Outside of the saunas they have a cold water shower and a regular shower, which is good. I tried the plunge pool and jacuzzi and was a bit grossed out. Though side by side neither seems to get to the temp that t should be. In the jacuzzi the water was tepid & murky. I thought it was the color of the bottom, but no. Children were swimming around in it. Same for the plunge pool. Also, I did not smell chlorine or anything in there to break up bacteria and such. Thank God I use my anti viral, anti bacterial essential oils blends everywhere I go! Lastly the "Massage Therapist " was untrained IMHO. He did moves on the left side and then did something different on the right side. While he was attentive and asked questions about how much pressure I needed, he was less than thorough. I have never had a 30 minute massage which focused primarily on my butt and back and also he never turned me over. Thank God,! My daughter says he did both sides on her which included her bare breasts without asking permission. That to me constitutes perv action. Overall, no need to return for me, ever! read more

I was just curious so I decided to purchase a deal with Groupon so I could experience Forest Hills Spa.Everyone there is very polite and really pay attention to your needs.Parking can be frustratiing but luckily enough Forest Hills spa had reserved a few spots on a private lot for it s customers,there is a fee of 8.00 usd assigned which is worth every penny otherwise frustration would take over and you surely would drive away.The Place itself is fairly modest,and it feels like more being in a club then a Russian bathouse,nevertheless i enjoyed their sauna and Jacuzzi,it was ok while it lasted.Now will I go out of my way to go back there?Maybe Not.Overall on a scale of 1 to 10 Forest Hills spa gets a 6. read more

A friend and I spent a Saturday afternoon here, and had a very nice and relaxing time. We got a livingsocial deal for $15, which included the entrance fee and $15 off a service. The man at the desk took the time to show us around the place, which was very nice. They have small lockers at the front desk for valuables, and they give you a key to the lockers in the locker room (so you don't need to bring a lock). They also provide towels. Definitely bring flip flops and soap/lotion if you would rather not use the soap in a dispenser. Honey to slather on yourself while in the steam room would be a good idea too. The place is small, but it wasn't too busy for a Saturday afternoon- but maybe that's because it was snowing out. As others have said, the russian sauna was way too hot. It was 213 degrees in there, and it literally burned to breathe through my nose (water boils at 212 degrees). The other sauna was 180-190 degrees, which was hot, but tolerable. The steam room was tiny, and could only fit 4-5 people at a time, but they put a pot of eucalyptus leaves over the steam element, and it smelled divine in there. To operate the jacuzzi, you need to ask a staff member to turn on the jets. We asked for the black mud treatment, but the woman talked us out of it saying that the mud should be on for at least an hour to have real benefits, and that treatment was only 1/2 hour including the body wash (so the mud would only be on 15 mins or so) I found it strange that she would be talking us out of a treatment, but I'm grateful for her honesty. She recommended the body scrub, and I'm so glad she did! It started with her squeezing fresh lemon juice over my body (it was a little cold, but she did warn me), followed by warm honey, and salt to scrub. It was like a massage and scrub in one. When she was done, she left me some lemon, honey, and salt in case I wanted to scrub my face or anywhere else, and she gave me plenty of time. She was very thorough, and my skin feels amazing. I don't use any artificial ingredients on my skin at home, so I'm so happy this was all natural. They have a restaurant with a nice menu (you can see it on their website). We had the fried veal dumplings which were really tasty, and the fruit platter, which was only oranges, grapefruit, and green apple (in fairness we didn't want watermelon or pineapple, but I thought there would be a little more variety). I ordered the large herbal tea, and it was a huge pitcher- way more than we could drink. Next time I'll stick with the small which is a nice size teapot. The tea comes with honey and some sour cherries in syrup- yum! I think this was a great find, and I will be keeping my out out for more deals here! read more

Very clean! Not fancy but a warm pool, about 20' x 30', hot tub, and a cold tub. I was able to swim a few laps and do some water exercises. It's not too big, but very nice...! I went here last night. I had a wonderful time. The facilities were very clean. The steam room, while small, was scalding hot, fragrant with eucalyptus, and really incredible. They also have hands down the best/hottest dry sauna I've ever been in. This place isn't for spa newbies, but if you live for the heat, it's one of the best spas in NY. The food looked great but I didn't try it. Next time. Really though, cheap baltikas (4 bucks), hot saunas, and steamy steam rooms. What more could you ask for? This place is the real deal. It is incredibly unsanitary and I was violated getting a salt scrub from someone who I don't even think was supposed to be doing it...AND THEN YELLED AT BY THE LADY UP FRONT LIKE I WAS DOING SOMETHING WRONG. Shame on this place they should be closed down immediately. This is one of the most unsanitary places I have ever been to! I purchased a groupon for 4 people, and took my friends there, When we got to the place, we were greeted by HUGE flies and no one at the "front desk." Then after a man who seemed to be the front desk person directed us to the changing rooms, we then discovered an outdated, dirty little room with one bathroom only, which was full of flies as well. We then decided to give the sauna a try, and maybe the platza leaves treatment. The sauna was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. However, when we asked for the leaves "treatment," another staff member brought us over an old paint bucket with a bunch of brown leaves in it and said: "this is it." WTH???? people were RE-USING the same bunch of leaves over and over. Then we saw some food coming out from the Hot steam rooms side, and taken to the "dining area" located on the opposite side, across the pools. Seriously? food travelling across steam rooms and pools????? One of my friends (the brave one who jumped in those pools and steam room), contracted a skin infection, which had to be treated by a dermatologist. i have made it a personal mission to check out all the russian banyas in NYC. i love love love the genius contrast between extreme hot and extreme cold and am of the persuasion that a day at the banya trumps any massage, pedicure, or facial you can find. forest hills spa has some glaring positives and negatives: positives: -the location (for me) is the most easily accessible. it also has a private lot. street parking was difficult, but that was because it was street cleaning (M&T). -the russian room is blazing! -they have a cold shower and a cold pool to cool off. i really like a cold pool, and the lack thereof is my only real gripe with brooklyn banya. -large pool to relax in. -not crowded, and sleeping in between rounds is almost encouraged (wooden bunk beds for the ultimate lounge). -VERY CLEAN -decent food, excellent beer and mineral water selection, wine that does not flow from a box. -very nice and accommodating staff. negatives: -small. like the previous reviewer said you walk in from the street. locker rooms are really small, but really clean. -pools are a bit murky, but not disgustingly so. placid jacuzzi which to me defeats the point of a jacuzzi. i don't go to the banya for a jacuzzi so it really didn't bother me. -small saunas. if it was crowded it could be uncomfortable. -seating area is limited. not really conductive to groups. the tables are glued to the wall in the pool area which limits ability to accommodate and stretch out. -no food or drink in the main area. you have to eat in a designated area (which is really cute and overlooking the pools) and leave your stuff or bring it into the restaurant. -the steam room had a mild mildew smell, and i am a firm believer that a steam room should smell like eucalyptus. overall i enjoyed myself and would go back. if the location is convenient for you like it is me it is definitely worth checking out. the clientele is primarily russian and very social (i got adopted by a mildly anti-semitic russian lady who said the jews like the banya too hot) if not a little overbearing. the staff is pleasant and the facility is immaculate which offsets the murky pool. read more

This is a small no-frills bath house/spa, so if you're looking for something fancy, this isn't it. However, if you just want a place to chill in a sauna or steam room, this should work for you. Admission is $30 for the day and this gets you access to a pool, two saunas, a jacuzzi, wooden bunk beds, a cafe, and a steam room. The only thing I really don't like is the jacuzzi is never on (with no directions on how to turn it on) and the water in it looks a bit dirty. The rest of the place is fine. It's no Spa Castle, but it does have fewer to no kids, you don't have to wear a silly uniform in the saunas, and you aren't you forced to strip to go into the steam room and jacuzzi area (something I've always found weird). All in all, not a bad place to go on a cold winter day. read more

The place has nice saunas/pool and the restaurant is amazing, but me and my friend were harassed so much by a guy trying to sell us massages it became uncomfortable. He would not leave us alone! He followed us around for an hour to every sauna persistently trying to sell us services. Try listening to a sales pitch over and over again in a 200 degree room. If you like Russian Bath - simple, home-style, right to the point, then THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!!! Russian Room is as hot as it gets, and the people who do Veniki (Leaf broom treatments in Russian Room) there are as good as they come. Finnish sauna is great and so is the steam room. Cold pool, Jacuzzi, large pool are all there for you. Water in jacuzzi and cold pool only look dark because they use dark tiles on walls and floor of them. The masseurs there have magic hands!!! Staff is friendly and quick to make sure place is clean and that you get what you need. Food is simple and tasty Russian home-style in keeping with the atmosphere. It has a friendly family feel, you get to know everyone there, and is mix of many different people(this is Queens near the 7 train after all), not just Russian. If you want fancy chandeliers here, forget it! If you want top grade heat and cold, great masseurs, good food in intimate, friendly atmosphere, if you are serious about Russian Bath, go no further, you will do no better than here. DISGUSTING PLACE- My friends and I went for the first time with a groupon that we bought but we're never going back. The place is very small and the pools look very brown/dirty. The saunas were way too hot, the locker rooms are tiny and there is only one toilet in the women's BR. It looks very shady but we decided to have an opened mind since we paid a good price for the package. We ordered some food, but even though the cafeteria is set up off the pool, the food came from a room in the back, and the lady had to pass through the pool and steam rooms with our plates before she served it to us at the other end of the establishment.... The groupon included a discount for the massage, so I went ahead and purchased it. The room was tiny with a massage table that was terribly stinky. The massage guy told me to wait a moment bc he was going to clean it. I thought it would be ok after he took 15 min "cleaning" in there. I still went inside and I could see that the room was still stinky and looked like an unfinished basement. I didn't see any oils or salts in there, he made me lay down and started the massage. I asked him if he was a massage therapist because it felt like he didn't know what he was doing, and he said he wasn't. He was inappropriate twice until at one point that I decided to stop the infamous massage and leave. I saw the oil he used afterwards and I noticed that it was a generic baby oil! The next day I had to go to the doctor bc I got a rash in my back. I had to go to the dermatologist for treatment of a bacteria, from the massage. DISGUSTING!!!
