I had an amazing tour with Ellen, the owner and director of Quick Culture, yesterday evening at the Getty museum! Our group of 12 was signed up by Renaissance club with Ellen for a private tour in the Getty museum. She was welcoming and so full of knowledge even about the design of the building infrastructure and architecture. Then the detail about each piece of art that we stopped to see were definitely tidbits that left me planning to read more on my own later because it was so interesting. The tour is with light walking and standing around each art but there are soft cushioned chairs in most of the gallery rooms to rest if you're tired. When we were finished I didn't want the tour to end, I wanted to hear more and more! I truly enjoyed this tour and I would love to return for another tour for the other areas of the Getty! Once the tour was over I stayed to peruse the bottom floor where the photo gallery was located but it's not the same quietly moving along looking at things on your own as it is to have a guide giving you such interesting bits of information! None of us are knowledgeable in art and had we just gone to the Getty on our own, we would have looked at the paintings and not known the history. You could tell Ellen was very passionate and knowledgeable with the history of the painters and paintings. She took us to specific paintings and effectively weaved a story throughout the centuries so that we could see the evolution of art. Ellen gave my sister and me a private tour of the Getty center collection. She is witty, intelligent and having been a docent there for many years, really knows art history. She selected 6 pieces to show us each moving upward through the centuries in a logical sequence and she carried along many visual adds to further explain her topics. At one point we stood on the balcony, overlooking the city of LA so that she could explain different types of perspective used by painters, then took us inside to a painting which used that perspective; it was wonderful! In 2010, I was part of the Painting in Provence experience, and what an experience it was! There is not a single aspect of it that I would change. Ellen's attention to detail was impeccable, and because of it, everything flowed smoothly...from the insightful pre-flight information/preparation to our arrival to our fabulous accommodations and accompanying cuisine to our art-related excursions (with our amazing guide, Laurence) and, most certainly, to our courtyard painting lessons with our very talented, patient instructor, Bill. I would be remiss if I didn't add the sheer delight it was to conclude the trip by riding the TGV to Paris and spending a few days focusing on the artistic wonders of this beautiful city.
