Throw in a guided walking tour, and we have a comatose situation on our hands! So needless to say when I mentioned that I booked us on a 2-hour art tour of the Getty Center in LA, he wasn't exactly jumping for joy. But as usual, he went along with my plans even though he wasn't exactly sure WHY I was so excited about an art tour. That was, until I told him that it would be a juicy, behind-the-curtain tour at the Getty run by a company called Museum Hack. I first came across Museum Hack a few years ago when I was looking for unique things to do with my parents in LA. We never had a chance to do it together before my mom passed away. But I figured, why not be tourists for the weekend? I know my mom would have loved it. Our guide Vic had an infectious energy and passion for all things art. And the very first stop included a piece of art I would have never even stopped to look at. It was a glass bottle in the shape of a German guy... Also, known as a "joke glass." It turns out that it was an old-time mug for drinking booze! The drinker had to guess how to drink from the vessel -- and if any liquor was spilled, he was required to start again with a full glass. Basically, it's like a drinking game from college now on display in the prestigious Getty Museum. Who knows, that classic beer bong you got from the Jersey Shore might one day pop up at the Getty? Okay, probably not... Vic led us from one gallery to the next. She showed us the statues outside including one that had a removable penis (which actually was stolen a few years back!). The work of art is of a horse and rider by Marino Marini called Angel of the City for famed art collector and socialite Peggy Guggenheim. When Guggenheim commissioned the piece she insisted on it having a removable rod (aka penis) that could be screwed on and off to allow for a quick manning-down of the rider in case she had a prudish guest on her list. I can only imagine the well-heeled Ms. Guggenheim, quickly unscrewing the statue before the big shin dig! Today, the very prominent "rod" is permanently affixed. So don't feel tempted to tug it off, or face the wrath of the Getty security! Clearly, this isn't your grandma's tour. After getting an overview of the museum and checking out the gorgeous view from the outdoor gardens, we were ready for one of Museum Hack's signature elements -- an interactive game. Now, I gotta admit, I wasn't sure that I was going to be into this part of the tour. Really? A game?! But it turned out to be more fun than it sounds. Really! Vic sent us on our way to take photos on our iPhone of how we would go about stealing a piece of artwork. It's sort of like improv on the spot. Our story involved using a piece of art to slap the security guards on duty (though most tour groups say they'd steal the art by repelling down from the ceiling!). Next, Vic asked us to snap a photo of a piece of art that inspired us. I selected a work of a man wearing a bright white cape since it reminded me of my childhood and performing magic tricks in front of my family (or any audience for that matter!). My story was enough to win the grand prize at the end -- a free magnet from the Getty gift shop. Hey, I love anything free so I'll take it. And speaking of gift shops, you better know where I ended up at the end of our 2 hour tour. Yes, the gift shop is pretty amazing. And we might have even bought something. I couldn't pass up the book The Chronicles of Old Los Angeles, which outlines how the City of Angels came into existence. Okay, totally not about art but still a fascinating read.

Monisha had so much energy and enthusiasm for the material. We learned a lot of insights about women throughout history. Monisha had us play games that were fun. She also gave us a little snack at the half way point of the tour. On top of that, my wife won a prize that she LOVES! The Getty Museum is an amazing place to begin with. Museum Hack takes it to the next level. My wife and I both highly recommend the BABS tour. I think you will too! Check it out!

She and her girlfriends are all huge art appreciators and museum goers. I thought a "behind the scenes" art tour would be right up her alley. I consider myself pretty plugged in to the LA art scene - however, I was referred to a company that I had never heard of - ART MUSE LA. Art Muse Los Angeles is a community of art historians, artists and educators who offer small groups private art tours - in museums, galleries, artist studios and private collections - throughout the LA region. What a stroke of luck! I was put in touch with Clare Kunny, the owner and Director. She was incredibly charming, smart, and approachable on the phone. I told her I was looking for a curated art tour, something more than your typical museum docent tour. She emailed me with several fantastic, diverse ideas. I opted for a two-hour tour with a theme around women in the arts. Our guide, Susan Power, was incredibly knowledgeable. She highlighted contributions to American art of the LA-NYC gallerist Virginia Dwan at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Then we walked across the street to Spruth Magers gallery to tour the exhibition POWER displaying art made by African American women from the Civil War era to the present. Susan gave an in depth talk on both subjects in conjunction with her choosing select artworks that showed the strength of and vision of these women artists. My mother and her friends were blown away. She is still talking about it. If you're looking for something interesting, fun, and unique to do in LA - for a date night, for something to do for fun with friends, for a special occasion - I highly recommend checking out Art Muse LA. They are a gem in the rough. Thank you Art Muse LA for making my mother's birthday so incredibly memorable and special!

My husband and I spent about 4 hours here during one visit. The Central Garden was for sure my favorite sight to see out of everything. The garden is designed to change with the seasons, so it can look different depending on what time of year you visit. Free English-language tours focused on this garden are offered daily. Clearly, this is a must-visit spot for anyone visiting socal. It is one of socal's most famous cultural destinations, with plenty of tourists as well as locals visiting. The unique art collections, world-class exhibitions, and 4 beautiful gardens are all exciting parts to explore. If you are driving there, then parking is easy peasy. There is a huge designated parking garage. After parking, you can then take a tram up to the museum. I believe parking is only free after 5pm. If you get there any earlier, then you'll have to pay for parking. The price of parking is fully worth the experience.

A full Two hour guided tour riding around the back lot on a 15 passenger electric cart. Super knowledgeable driver / tour guide (Zack) talks you through the various backlot sets and sound stages with video presentations on the monitors mounted in the cart. There are several stops where you can get off to experience and hear details about shows and movies that used these specific sets. Very interesting seeing the building facades and landscaped grounds and the history of the studio. Our tour included a snack / continental breakfast and a lunch at the Friends Central Perk cafe restaurant. Both offered a decent selection of food and drink items. In the morning they served juices, coffee, tea, water, chips, cookies, danish to munch on before the tour started. Caveat is you only have 15 minutes to relax and enjoy before leaving for the tour. Lunch break happened at the end of our two hour guided tour. The tour package lunch included a hot or cold entree, side dish and drink. We were surprised at the selection and quality of the food. Various hot and cold sandwiches, salads, chips and a full selection of hot or cold, large or small coffee drinks. Even some blended coffee drinks. We ordered the hot Cuban sandwich, Cobb salad and a large iced coffee latte drink. The Cuban was hot but a little bit soggy but still tasty. Cobb salad super fresh and healthy. Coffee drink was solid with creamy topping. After lunch you begin the self guided portion of the tour which is inside stage 48? Where the restaurant was located. Film technology and costumes on display with various interactive display to participate. Harry Potter, Batman, Superman and other blockbuster movies artwork, costumes and videos on display. So much to discover. Easily spent 2 hours in there. Surprisingly they told us we also had entry into the Superman Experience. We did not know this was part of the tour. It is not mentioned in the marketing online. Unfortunately we ran out of time and had to skip this. Too bad as I think it is super popular. Regardless the tour was unexpectedly very entertaining and enjoyable. Weather was great not too hot. Highly recommended for folks looking for a break from the theme parks. We upgraded to the TCM tour, which adds time and locations to the standard tour. But at check in, they also offered the Superman Experience for FREE (normally a $40 add-on). Not sure if this is a normal offer or a special occasion, so your experience may differ. Our tour guide, FREDDY, was a wealth of knowledge about the studio, the history, and every movie & TV show imagineable. He brought great energy, humor, and friendliness to the tour. We highly recommend asking for Freddy as your guide if possible. The tour itself was fascinating and fun. There is so much history on the Warner Bros lot. Central Perk cafe was a nostalgic dream come true. Good food at a reasonable price and so much Friends merch. There's an interactive walk-through gallery attached that shows so much history, lets you work a bit on post-production of film scenes, and photo ops with the Friends set and Big Bang Theory. The Superman Experience was incredible! Top Shelf all the way. It's an immersive event- part 3D video game you walk through, and part interactive exploration of the Fortress of Solitude. The area has a really cool bar that serves fun drinks and snacks. Finally we ended up at the self-guided DC Comics/Harry Potter museum where costumes and vehicles were on display. And they added in some cool interactive things to do as well. There's even a Sorting Hat that will tell you which House you belong in. But I protest the hat choosing Slytherin for me. That's BS. LOL We left feeling amazed. Start to finish, the Warner Bros Studio Tour is one of the best experiences in LA. We're local so we've done pretty much all the cool stuff around, and this makes the top 5 for sure. We will be back in October for the Haunted Studio Tour!! Can't wait.
