Walked into the Egyptian Theater. He was able to tell our some cool things about the Chinese Theater. Learned a lot about the Dolby Theater.We purchased the Los Angeles Go Card, so I'm not even sure how much this cost separately. But it was worth it for a LA tourist. Review for " A Journey Through Time in Film Tour" in Downtown Los Angeles. You don't have to be a movie buff or an out-of-town visitor (I'm not a film person and I've lived in Downtown LA for 10+ years) to enjoy this fun tour through numerous historical landmarks in Downtown Los Angeles. Our tour guide, Jared, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the landmarks and neighborhood, and the current states of the spaces that we visited. The tour was very engaging and I loved the use of personal headsets and the big tablet he wore to show us clips of the films while we were standing right at the spot where the scene(s) were shot. We did the Los Angeles Hollywood Movie Experience where our guide pointed out areas where films actually made and had the movie clips to help you see. Beyond that though learned so much more...lived in CA my whole life and learned many fascinating things in just 90 minutes. It was an easy walk, not difficult at all. Appreciated too that we had audio devices to hear the tour without guide having to scream. What a fun day in LA! read more

We booked a tour online for 10:00, received an email confirmation the day before the tour and showed up 15 minutes before... only to be told that they were fully booked by some giant school group. They refused to let us on the tour, even after I showed them the confirmation emails. The guy claimed it was auto generated and he had blacked out all the times that the school group was taking up. That was a lie, I had booked that tour 3 weeks in advance, they had 3 entire weeks to send me a cancellation notice or a notice that those times were blacked out. He also claimed that we were the only people affected by the cancellation and blamed us for using some hacker loophole to get tickets. Again, a blatant lie. We went to another tour group and the people there told us that there had been many people over the course of the day with the same story as us (got their tour cancelled by Red Line). They prey on people with Go LA Cards because they know we can't get refunds for these tours. Horrible customer service, incredibly rude and unprofessional, zero accountability. DO NOT take a tour with these people, there are many other options in the Hollywood area. read more

I had a disappointing first and only experience with Redline Tours. I purchased a Go LA card when I took a trip to LA. Description of the tour and excellent reviews on travel website portrays this company as knowledgeable and fun. I called the reservation line to find out that phone reservations are not taken. Reservations must be made through the company website. You are able to choose a tour date and select number of guests. At the end, a confirmation window shows up and states that if your selected tour is not available, you will be notified via phone or email. My boyfriend and I arrived at the tour location to find out that the tours were booked out for the next few days. No one was available at the counters to assist. Tour guides were annoyed when we asked about the check in process. When we finally found an approachable tour guide, he informed us there was a school group (?) tour. He asked how we were able to receive "confirmations" and that we weren't the first to tell him we had confirmed seats. We left for a different tour and attraction as this company has a flawed booking system and lacks staff for adequate customer service While the value of the tour is excellent, I suggest backup plans if you're touring Hollywood area. read more

The Hollywood Movie Experience in Downtown Los Angeles is my favorite of the many tours I've taken in LA. It gives you the best overview of the city's films, history, and architecture. Unlike most other LA tours, this one's entire 90-minute running time is packed with stories, film clips, and amazing sights. One moment you're reveling in the glorious interior of the Bradbury Building from Blade Runner, then you're riding the Angels Flight funicular featured in La-La Land, and next you're seeing the real-life "Gotham City" or a locale from the Muppets. We even got in to restricted areas of the Biltmore Hotel, where they filmed music videos by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Lopez, and more. Our tour guide, Michael, really made an extra effort to ensure that everyone in our group was able to enjoy the experience. He accommodated our different interests and fitness levels with aplomb, even going so far as to walk backwards while holding the movie player to get us back to the OUE Skyspace before sunset. No. No no no no no no. I'll elaborate. I'm the veteran of hundreds of walking tours all around the world, from the French Quarter in New Orleans to Wall Street in NYC. After two decades in LA, inspired by the wonderful Marilyn Monroe bus tour I took August 5th (see review above), I decided to try a Red Line Tour. This is by far the worst tour I have ever taken, and I found it to be downright offensive. The tour starts at the 1922 Grauman Egyptian Theatre and over the course of an hour takes you in a very short loop to the courtyard of the Chinese Theatre, up into the shopping mall at Hollywood and Highland, past the El Capitan Theatre and then back again. The tour guide is some kid who obviously knows absolutely nothing about her subject and seems to want to be somewhere else as she fills the time giving you 1) obvious information you could easily figure out for yourself (for example, showing you stars on the Walk of Fame and telling you that the record symbol is for people in the recording industry, the TV symbol is for people in the TV industry, the movie camera is for people in the movie industry...) and 2) downright wrong information. I'll give the most entertaining example of said misinfornation. She showed us the hand and footprints that stars Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson and director George Stevens left for the movie "Giant" and told us, "This is for the movie "The Giant" with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. James Dean was supposed to be the third set of prints, but he died before the ceremony (quite possibly true) and so another actor in the movie, George Burns left his footprints instead (George Burns was in Giant? Hahahahaha). The first couple of mistakes I corrected her, but eventually I decided I didn't want to be a jerk and ruin it for the other guests, so I just bit my lip. The guide had a microphone and we all had ear buds. I can see the advantage of this, as it makes it easier for the guide to talk to us without yelling - and increases the number of guest$ they can take on each tour. But the disadvantage -- especially when the guide is already totally disinterested -- is that it takes away any sense of intimacy and human contact. It was less like having an actual human being who's excited about Hollywood telling you anecdotes and responding to questions and looking you in the eye and more like taking a self-guided tour where you're being directed by a pre-recorded message read from a script that was written by someone who doesn't know squat about Hollywood. This is my first negative Yelp review, as I'm from the school of if-you-can't-say-anything-nice-don't-say-anything-at-all. I feel that if a restaurant or tour or play is trying its best and falls short, who am I to criticize, and I always stay silent. But Red Line Tours is in a whole different category. They are obviously all about taking advantage of unsuspecting tourists and are in the game to make as much money as they can. The worst thing for me is that most of the people taking the tour are in Hollywood for one day, and this company is robbing them of their only chance to experience this unique place in the manner they deserve. If this company in not ashamed of itself, as an Angeleno, I'm ashamed for them. There was only one positive aspect of the tour. Usually when a tour is over, the customers will clap for the tour guide and some will give tips. When this "tour" ended, the guests were visibly pissed off, especially when the tour guide had the nerve to ask for tips (at which point her enthusiasm showed up for the first time). She received not a cent, proving that tourists are not as dumb as Red Line thinks. Here's my tip -- find another tour. If you can't, just walk up and down Hollywood Boulevard and learn its history from the historical markers placed all over the place. It's cheaper, you'll learn more, and there are old pictures! read more

My four daughters ages 7-13 are growing actors in Hollywood and we thought what could be better than getting a crash course in Hollywood history. This tour did just that. The tour covers the major historical Hollywood sites within a short walking distance and most notably traces the steps of the stars as they make their way to the Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theater. Our guide Breeanna was extremely friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. She was an effective teacher for my kids and customized her presentation to their specific interests that she asked them about as the tour progressed. Their grandpa was also with us and learned a lot of interesting trivia about movies from his time. Perhaps the most valuable thing for me as a dad was the inspiration our guide provided to my young actor children. She had them wave to their imaginary fans on the red carpet, walk the path to the academy awards, and see their names in the blank stars and their footprints alongside those they love to watch. That kind of childhood dreaming is priceless. I highly recommend this tour as the first and foundational one to take when visiting Hollywood. read more

This was a surprisingly good tour in Hollywood that gave some good insight into the beginnings of the area and the stardom we now know. I took this tour as it was included in the GO LA city pass - to be honest I would never have taken this without it. However, I'm now really glad I did because I have a better appreciation of all the things that we saw. I'm not a huge celebrity fan or super into the Hollywood scene, so this is a good intro to those who don't have a big interest in this stuff. What really stood out was Michael, our guide, who managed to cram a ton of interesting information into a short hour and 15 minute walk around the block, while still patiently answering questions. I felt like he really was dedicated to his job and wasn't just going through the motions. We even ended up finishing a bit late but he never rushed us and stayed even later to answer more questions. Definitely go on this tour if you're in the Hollywood area and have the GO LA city pass, it's well worth it! read more

I finally took the time to do a walking tour with Red Line Tours for the Behind the Scenes Hollywood experience and I was blown away! The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and provided information I had never known and I'm a born and raised LA native. He was funny as well which made it even better. I was able to get up and close with awesome landmarks including the Egyptian Theatre and TCL Chinese Theatre. The walk was a perfect length...only 4 blocks round trip and allowed for time to stop and engage. I left feeling great and telling my friends all about random facts of knowledge I learned on the tour. It goes without saying that any tour really depends on your tour guide. I have taken all sorts of tours all over the world and it comes down to the person guiding you. I was nervous about taking the tour but thought with the deal price of 2 people for $25 what did we have to lose but an hour of our time? I believe our guide was named George, good looking guy who gave us his full attention. He was energetic, knew his stuff and answered questions with ease. He wasn't flustered if the conversation went off script. As others have stated the tour starts at the Theater and is a short loop. I personally love the ear piece, it is hard to hear with noisy traffic and people around, plus you can move around to check something out and not miss any information. This really is a personal preference. Our guide stayed close and answered all questions so I didn't feel he was disconnected. The tour covers a lot of information in a small space so it is good tour for older or mobility impaired people as well. Our guide also had older photos with him to show us for reference. Yes there was some basic information in the tour but imagine if you are visiting America for the first time, what's the harm in covering the basics? This is a simple, easy walking tour of a compact area. If you are looking for something more specific this is prob not the tour for you but if you have family visiting for the first time it's a great introduction to Hollywood for all ages. read more

I've been trying to book tickets online for over a week but had some questions, so I've been calling the number on their website and it has been busy every day this week, I've called numerous times and could never get anyone on the phone to ask what the prices are for a 7 year old, their site only gave prices for children 9-15, and to ask if they had a military discount. Since I could not reach them by phone, I tried to email but the email was no good. I finally found a different number on their Facebook page to call, but when I called it was all automated and they said that the answers to any questions could be found on their website. WRONG. Clearly they have terrible customer service, well I should say NO costumer service at all. So they missed out on a family of customers. We found another tour to take instead and they were easy to get ahold of and answered all of our questions over the phone! Yesterday a friend and I, who have both lived in L.A. for over 18 years, decided to take the Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes Walking tour on Hollywood Blvd. We were not disappointed! Having previously worked as a studio guide at both Universal & NBC, I know how much information you have to learn and retain, and I swear in that 70 minutes of walking, our fantastic tour guide Michael, had to know double the amount I ever did on my tours, and he did so very professionally, and clearly with a genuine enjoyment in what he was sharing! As someone who 'usually' avoids the Hollywood & Highland area due to the crowdedness of it, it was SO much fun to learn so much about some of these iconic buildings and area within that 6 block radius. Who knew?! Wearing headphones while walking along Hollywood Walk of Fame, as we listened to Michael on his mic, was such a unique experience. (Those headphones are a must to drown out the Hollywood Blvd. traffic). I'll never quite view that area the same way again! Thank you Michael for taking the time to talk with us afterwards. We learned so much about Downtown L.A. too in the 15 minutes we chatted with him! I am a 20-year Los Angeleno but I always like to learn more about my home city (and by the way, I travel a lot and take walking tours a lot) so I decided to take this walking tour of Hollywood Boulevard. I'm so glad I did! Long story short, I learned a ton and I will never dismiss this, yes, touristy but also deeply storied part of LA again! Of course, a large part of this is due to our great guide Michael (btw think he said he works Sundays through Thursdays), who was highly knowledgeable but also poised, professional, personable, and most of all passionate (he spent a ton of time after the tour just chatting about other LA history). All in all, time, and money, well spent. PS - During our walk through the Hollywood/Highland complex I discovered a Chado Tea Room and went back after the tour for a late lunch/afternoon tea. We enrolled in the walking tour called Hollywood Behind the Scenes, and found the tour guide to be very knowledgeable and witty. He was good at keeping the group together as we navigated Hollywood Blvd. This is a good jumping off place to start your exploration of Hollywood Blvd, take a morning tour, then go wander around on your own. There is parking behind the Egyptian Theater, but it's $10. You can feed the meters $4.00 for a maximum of 2 hrs. The tour is 75 minutes. It's worth it. read more

The girlfriend and I found this tour through Groupon. The deal was $25 for two(regular price is $25 a head). The Red Line Tours booth is right outside the Egyptian theater. I forget the tour guides name but he was very knowledgeable and very friendly. Each member of the tour gets a headset so you don't miss anything the guide says. You learn a lot about the history of Hollywood and it's landmarks. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a simple afternoon outing. read more

Very impressed! I first heard of redline tours through a friend and have recently attended two tours. Both guides (Breanna and Michael) were outstanding. Very knowledgable and passionate of all subject matter. I found myself following everything said by Breanna and Michael both times I have done the tour. For the time allotted and cost of this tour, it covers the perfect amount of subject matter and stops at all of the main highlights. The Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes walking tour was fantastic! My friend who I went with was from out of the country and had limited time to go sightseeing in LA. Due to misinformation between the vouchers we had and the actual tour times, we got there when Michael, the tour guide, was just finishing his last tour of the day! Michael was so great about our situation, and offered to give the tour again just for us! I do have to say I was very impressed with all the knowledge he had to know, and he presented it in such a professional manner. He had my attention the whole time, it was fun to walk around Hollywood Blvd and Highland and hear the incredible years of history and stories present in that place. We were visiting family in California and I am so glad our relatives took us on the Hollywood Behind the Scenes walking tour. Our guide, Michael, was very knowledgeable and interesting and gave us a fascinating history of early Hollywood. I liked that we all had headsets so we could clearly hear what he had to say over the noise on Hollywood Blvd. I enjoyed this experience much more than aimlessly wandering around the sites to look at stars and handprints without learning more about the details. Even though it's 1 hour 15 minutes, it's an easy walk that most should be able to do with no problem.
