I went into the social thinking we were going to cook and eat but it turned out to be so much more. We learned a lot from each other and also about food and health. One of the people in our group turned out to be a master at folding dumplings and taught us all how to fold dumplings at super speed mode, which I loved because we learned so much from each other that night! Jeannie put together a healthier version of a chinese bao that I loved.. and used squash in it.. Genius! We made mushroom tofu dumplings, squash baos and mushroom baos, all which turned out amazing! I don't think I would have tried to do these on my own but with Jeannie's help and the cooking social, it made it much easier to give it a try. The cooking social is a little bit of everything- Nutrition, health, mindfulness, community, and of course.. great fun!!! She created a menu that would appeal to all my guest. Half of my family is vegetarians while the other half is meat lovers. I told her what I liked to eat and she took it from there, while also giving me tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle. Satisfied would be an understatement. From the lollipop chicken, vodka soaked fruit to the pasta. All my favorite dishes were presented with her own little twist to it. I took a leap of faith reaching out to her, especially on short notice and everything came out to perfection. All this to say BOOK HER, you won't regret it. My family and friends were comfortable with her in our home and til this day ask for her food, even though it's been several months. I had the wonderful pleasure of having her cater our reception at Housing Works Bookstore. Fair warning - this will not be a review per se, but a love letter to Zoe and her works of umami art! First of all, do yourself a favor - book a tasting with Zoe immediately (as in yesterday). My (newly wedded) husband and I were speechless at our tasting; the only words we could say were "oh my god this is good" every time we sampled something. If you book a tasting now you'll save yourself a ton of time searching for a caterer because it'll be quickly apparent that you will not find anyone better. Anyways... so typically a bride does not want to be upstaged at her wedding, but let me tell you, the food was the star and I was NOT mad about it. I think almost every one of our 135 attendees came up to us to tell us that the food was amazing and hands down "the best food [they] have ever had at a wedding in [their] lives." This was coming from people who are absolutely not chicken and rice people -- but from people who live and eat in major cities all over the world with sophisticated palates and are VERY VERY critical about their food. I heard nothing but good things (trust me I would have heard about it if they had any criticism). Additionally, Zoe's plating is divine, the service of her staff is impeccable and I don't have a single point of need for development feedback. If we wanted a mix of flavors (like black sesame and green tea tarts for dessert), Zoe can accommodate that. A cajillion different allergies? Zoe can handle it. Have no idea what you want? At the time of the virtual tasting, you just log into the Zoom link and you get to join other people in experiencing the tasting. We tasted 13 candies from around the world, learning the intertwined history of sugar with history and its influence in culture. Chef Tova's insight on the world of candy is truly impressive -- we learned so much in a jam-packed 1 hour session. For example, did you know that candy's popularity grew during the war since it was part of the military's food ration? The packages included canned soup and other non-perishables including candy. Each country had their own special candy, which helped morale since it was such a nostalgic treat for the soldiers. However, it was the back story on candy's early development that fascinated us the most. Before the 1900's, it was common for candy makers to use nasty chemicals like Mercury or Lead to color the candy. Eek, like lead paint? That's right.... Hmm, maybe today's candy isn't as unhealthy as we thought? At least, that's what my husband and I told ourselves we polished off 13 pieces of candy in one sitting. Looks like we'll be hitting the gym tomorrow (or more likely, just eating all our Halloween candy that won't be given to trick or treaters this year). A fantastic class -- and would highly recommend Chef Tova's candy tasting experience for friend get-togethers or a company bonding activity. It would be so much better than those personality assessment activities my different employers have done over the years. Yes, I know, I'm an ENFJ! But I'd rather just have some candy.
