(Overall: F) - As part of a group adult cooking course, we previously experienced a journey that was supposed to encompass a taste of Thailand. Unfortunately, I think this title is actually rather disrespectful toward Thailand as all the recipes and techniques taught in this class completely miss the point of Thai food. The main dish is the iconic pad thai, a classic American favorite. Just from listing the ingredients, this dish is rather problematic as there were so many substitutions made to the dish that there are actually less authentic ingredients than the number of substitutions. For the one truly authentic ingredient, the rice noodles, even somehow got deformed into 1 inch sticks for some reason. Furthermore, this dish is fundamentally designed for a wok, trying to incorporate heat from the wok to add char to the dish -- which directly contradicts the instructor to instruct people to not even cook on the highest heat setting using a metal pan. The chicken satay is surprisingly tender, but once again is for some reason baked instead of charred on a grill, which significantly hinders flavor development. For the summer rolls, there was a significant missed opportunity here. Thai food is known for bold flavors through a variety of fresh herbs and spices, which does not add complexity for a cooking class -- yet, instead the rolls were instead left with only raw, bland vegetables which is more in line with the taste of an American veggie platter than anything Asian-related. In terms of technique and teaching, I will acknowledge the focus on emphasizing safety first. Beyond safety, I genuinely question the skills taught in this class. For example, the chef instructed us to cut the carrot and red cabbage into two inch strips. It could not possibly be enjoyable for anyone to bite into such a big chunk of unseasoned and hard vegetable. It does not appear that cutting into smaller strips would be a significantly more difficult task. This is the PERFECT place to bring a date. It seemed like everyone here was either with their significant other. With that being said, I came here with one of my best buds and still had a great time. We were paired up with a couple who turned out to be some really awesome people. We joked, laughed, celebrated each other on, and became friends. Our cooking instructors were Chef Emily and Chef Ashley. They were both super engaging, helpful and patient. They taught us all how to make general tso's chicken, pork dumplings, and even fortune cookies, all from scratch. I attended a Sunday night Handmade Pasta class with a friend, and neither of us have ever made pasta from scratch before. We came into the class with open minds, and when we arrived, we were directed to a table, provided with aprons, and given some time to get drinks and get ready for the class. The class was BYOB and wine glasses were provided. Since we were a group of 2, we were paired with a couple into a table of 4. At first, I was a bit nervous that could dilute the experience / we wouldn't get to cook much, but those fears quickly dissolved as there was plenty of work to go around. The style of the class was such that for each step, we watched a demonstration and then returned to our tables to repeat the steps ourselves. We had a chance to use pasta machines and try out a few different attachments. The end result of the class was absolutely delicious! We made two kinds of ravioli (spinach ricotta and butternut squash), fettuccine, and sauce to top them off. The hard work paid off when we all ate dinner, and it was the best pasta I've ever had! My one piece of feedback is that sometimes they could have explained more WHY we were doing each step to promote deeper understanding for when I replicate it at home. However, I feel like I came out of the class understanding how to make my own pasta, and they sent me home with the recipe so I can do it again! read more

Came here for a french countryside cooking class and it was fun! Our instructor was knowledgeable and humorous, and the rest of the crew was very efficient at dispensing ingredients and cleaning up. Our table really enjoyed the food we made, especially the potatoes for some reason (butter. It was the butter.) I'm not sure if they offer classes of different levels of difficulty/complexity, but I would rate the class more elementary than intermediate. What I'm sure would've been a great and amazing time was unfortunately ruined due to a personal occurrence that sadly stopped us from making our appt for the cooking class which we were looking so forward to going to... After calling and leaving several messages, no one called back and then finally called again to inquire about rescheduling. He was completely dismissed, stating that there were no refunds or rescheduled, no matter what... Of course, after spending the amount of money that we did, we tried to come up with a resolution, but the individual spoken with, sadly, was not the friendliest and a bit demeaning ... lesson learned that if with a huge situation, certain companies will not be willing to help out... We're still really excited to do it, but with a company that is a bit more empathetic towards humans and understanding of situations that may arise, which is out of their control. I just did a Taste Buds Thai cooking class this past weekend, it was a lot of fun! My bf and I did a 5:00 PM class at the Chelsea location on 27th street (btw 6th & 7th). There is street parking and parking garages in the area; we found a spot on the block. The building the kitchen is in is under construction so don't be put off by the appearance, it's a very nice and clean facility located on the 10th FL. We took the elevator up and waited outside, which got a bit crowded since they opened slightly after 5; we then checked in at the door put our coats and ish on the provided hooks and grabbed an apron and took our assigned station, which we shared with two lovely ladies. We didn't know that we'd be cooking in a group, so this is something you want to keep in mind just in case you're not into working with strangers. Luckily our little group had a great system, everyone was always doing something. Mise en Place is how the class is set up, its a fancy French word translating to 'put in place' it allows the chef(s) to cook in the most efficient way without having to stop. So basically you're not measuring anything out or cleaning your food this helps keep the class moving at the same pace. This kitchen is peanut free, which was a bit of a bummer since peanuts are at the core of Thai food, but they did make a banging coconut milk sauce for the skewers that satisfied the peanut void that I felt. The meal included chicken-pineapple skewers marinated in a lovely sauce we mixed up, followed by veggie spring rolls (not fried), which we diced up and assembled at our stations, and then the tofu pad thai. The tofu is already cooked so we just threw it in at the end with our noodles to toast them up, which is what we also did with the precooked noodles. We made the sauce, and then slowly added everything into the pan. The chicken skewers were cooked in an oven controlled by the instructor, it was served at the end with our meal. They also provided basmati rice that we did not prepare, it was delish! Overall the class was great, it is not a serious cooking class, it's more of an experience since you're doing everything with the guidance of an instructor while sipping on your own booze (win)! The final meal was so good, it was a little bit of everything and you def did not leave hungry. Perfect for a group, date night, or just as something to do, I'd like to try their pasta making class next! read more

A lover of cooking, eating and all things food related, my group of friends got me a cooking class at Taste Buds Kitchen for my bday and the 5 of us went last night to the BYOB Italian class. The layout is great with each table having their own stovetop with all ingredients already measured out. The main instructor held a couple demonstration at the front of the room and staff members would also walk around reinforcing instructions. Luckily they had a little pita bread & olive oil on the table to snack on while you cooked as well as a water stations with lemon & limes. I recently did a Taste Buds Handmade Pasta Twist Class here for Valentine's Day with my s/o and friends and I must say, it was an awesome experience! It was BYOB (wine or beer) which is honestly the main thing that made me further look into their classes. It was $158 per couple and honestly worth the price. We made spinach garganelli, spaghetti, roasted red pepper alfredo sauce and pesto (the instructor made it). Everything was from scratch and with the perfect amount of assistance - and it was allllll delicious! I wish i can remember my instructor's name because she made the experience such a great time. After winning a complementary class for two, from Taste Buds Kitchen's Instagram account, I was excited to attend my BYOB sushi making class. My plus 1 and I get there 10 minutes early and are eagerly waiting to cook (and eat considering the class started at 9 pm). Once a staff member opened the door to check people in, we wait in line patiently to check in. When we reach the front of the line, we are told we are not on the list. This confused me as I showed the staff member the emails between Jessi, and Jae, and I coordinating my class visit. The staff member still insists I am not registered since I am not on the list and makes my plus 1 and I wait outside while they tried to figure things out. This was very off putting for a first time experience as I would expect more communication and organization between the team. After about 10 additional minutes of waiting, we were finally allowed in and sat at a table with another group of people. It was obvious they were not planning on us as they then had to set up another station for the last pair of 2 that arrived that night. Class begins and we are taught how to make dumplings and sushi. The instructions given were performed by the chef so we could see exactly what to do. Instructions were detailed but felt a bit rushed. Throughout class they played Nicki Minaj on the speakers. Personally, I am a big fan so loved the music choice. Once the end of class was drawing near, you could tell everyone in class was hungry as people were starting to snack. At this point it was about 11 pm. We then all got to sit and dine as we enjoyed veggie dumplings and 2 sushi rolls each. Everything was delicious. Thankfully, my plus 1 and I got along very well with the other group of people at our table. If booking a class here, please note you may be paired up with strangers. If this makes you uncomfortable, I believe you can purchase a separate table so you can have the space to yourself. You get to cook in small groups of 4 while the instructor guides you step by step. Most importantly, you can drink while you do so because it's BYOB! Our instructor, Sara, did a great job explaining the recipe and teaching different skills during demonstrations. What an amazing experience, came for the Valentine's couples pizza making class. The chef was so informative, friendly and funny. We got paired up randomly with the funniest couple, swapped wines and stories. We got to make 3 pizzas, classic margherita, alla Bismarck (breakfast like pizza) and white pizza with mushroom and truffle oil. All delicious and simple to make! They prep the pizza dough for you. You get to stretch out the pizza dough, toss in the air at your own risk, prep the ingredients and add the toppings. At the end we also get to make donut bites, used from the pizza dough, rolled in cinnamon sugar and dipped in chocolate ganache. Our dough literally looked like ashes and the ravioli looked like they had been through a wood chipper. Since we totally busted our raviolis Melinda made sure we didn't go hungry and was hard at work making us pretty and functional ravioli/dough. I just went here for Xmas eve gingerbread house class with my 2 and 3 year old. The description said it was for 2 and up and let's just say it is not. There was no instructions or help just a tray of candy and icing and while for older kids that's super fun the little ppl need a little more help and attention. The best parts about the experience: - A ton of different classes to choose from. We went with the taste of Italy which included risotto, eggplant parm, and cannolis, but there were so many other amazing sounding options, including pasta making, sushi, and cupcake classes! - It's BYOB! And not only that, they let you order bottles directly to their location so you don't have to lug them all around town. They'll even chill them for you! - The price is definitely right! I looked into a lot of different cooking classes and this was by far the most affordable for a two hour class. - The instructors were patient, funny, and friendly. They were attentive but also cool with the group chatting and bonding amongst ourselves. The whole point of the event was to bond with the group, after all, so it was nice to have a balance of learning but also just hangtime. - The kitchen is immaculate, spacious, and super professional looking. I've been to cooking classes that are essentially in someone's home, which can be cozy and fun, but I liked the room to spread out here at Taste Buds. - The risotto and eggplant parm were amazing. The cannoli left a little to be desired, but I think that's because they focused on using quick and easy recipes that we could do at home, so they cut some corners. I booked a class for March 2020, and of course, the pandemic hit. I haven't felt comfortable coming to a cooking class during the pandemic (which is completely rational if you ask me) and I had to push and push for them to extend the credit so I didn't lose the $100+ I paid for the class. Even when they gave me the credit, they told me I have to use it by February 2022, which is absolutely insane considering how bad Covid is in NYC right now. Just avoid this place at all costs. I took my 5 year old for his first Easter cupcake making class last Saturday that was taught by Leah and Natalie, two very cheerful and welcoming instructors. The instructors kept the kids engaged and focused on the tasks. My son had a great time mixing the dry and wet ingredients and then pouring the batter into the cupcake pans. I think it was a great idea to incorporate some additional learning when the instructors asked the kids to smell the vanilla extract before pouring it into the batter. The kids was asked what they thought it smell like. When the cupcakes were ready, the instructors coached the kids on how to decorate them step by step (icing, then jelly bean eyes, whiskers, marshmallow ears, pink sugar and then using the icing pen).
