In 2017, we rented an oceanfront property for two weeks through Maine Cottage Properties, our first…read moreexperience with Maine Cottage Properties although our 20th trip to Maine. The property was lovely, but a house was being built immediately behind Hartwood (the name of the rental). The site was being leveled and the bulldozers began at 7 am, all day long. The noise was so bad we left the house during the day. We spoke to the rental agent, who did not offer an alternative to us, nor any discount on the (very expensive) rent. Clearly the owner and agent would have known this was happening and could have informed us and offered other arrangements. We decided to be good-natured about it, although we were explicitly upset about it and it was clearly not the peaceful Maine vacation we sought. We rented the property again this year, with the caveat that we be informed of any pending construction. This is a pay-in-full ahead of time rental contract, with no refunds, which we knew. However, my husband became ill just before the trip, and his doctor forbade traveling. We asked for some consideration from the rental agency, given our dreadful noise experience last year. We were essentially told "this is business-you should have gotten vacation insurance". Although we and our family loved the property, we would not rent it again, or any other property through this agency. Not a renter-friendly agency at all. So disappointing.
