Then at 10.19am they emailed saying they rented it out to someone else. They don't care about following through on commitments, I'm sure I'm not the first person they've done this too. Called directly when I saw their email and they were rude and defensive saying there was no sense of urgency on my part. There was nothing they could do to rectify going against their word. Be very cautious when dealing with this company. They claim to have standards before marketing a property; but if that is true, than a cottage like Eastern Bay Gatehouse should never have made it as part of their inventory. The air quality in this particular cottage was toxic and I won't even mention all the other negative aspects of the house which are many. If you are marketing a property you are part of the transaction and therefore you are also a responsible party to the agreement. Vacationers who value privacy, clear communication and customer service should think twice before renting through BHACR. My family rented an oceanfront cottage through this agency for a week (Saturday to Saturday) in October. All the interactions leading up to our trip were smooth but that changed when we arrived at the rental. It was then that we discovered a sign on the dishwasher indicating that it was out of order. Given that the checkout time for the previous guests was 10am, there should have been plenty of time to contact us to inform us that the advertised dishwasher was in need of repair. Unfortunately, we were not notified in advance, and arrived at the cottage with a week's worth of groceries and plans to "eat in" six out of our seven night stay. Our party included six people. Had I known that the dishwasher was not working, I would have made alternative plans so as to avoid handwashing that many dishes during our stay. The next morning, I texted the property's caretaker to inquire about repair. I was told that she "would know tomorrow" (Monday) about the repair status. The appliance repair person came on Tuesday morning around 9am, but I received no update after the appointment as to the status of repair and so I, once again, texted the caretaker around noon to inquire. At that time, she replied saying that the dishwasher was unrepairable and it would not be replaced until after our departure. It is, of course, understandable that an appliance would occasionally require attention, but I certainly was not prepared to be without a dishwasher during our entire stay. I communicated that I was "really disappointed" and inquired about a discount. The caretaker directed me to the owner of the rental agency who responded promptly to my email and stated, "of course we will compensate you." The next morning (Wednesday), we had a bit of a rush in the morning due to a biking excursion I'd booked months in advance. It wasn't until I got in the car (right around 8:15 am) to head to the meeting spot that I saw a missed call and a text from the caretaker informing me that the appliance would be replaced at 9am. The call came in at 8:02am and the text followed at 8:04. Less than one full hour of notice was given in advance of this appointment and the appointment itself was completely unexpected based on the information I'd received the afternoon prior. Over the course of the next hour, both my husband and I attempted to communicate with the caretaker about the situation because we had left our dog (who was approved on our rental contract) behind for the morning and my disabled daughter and limited-mobility senior mother had planned to return to the cottage after dropping the rest of the family off at the biking excursion meeting spot which was located about five minutes from the cottage. The poorly-communicated appliance repair appointment forced a quick change of plans for them. We placed three calls to the caretaker over the course of about thirty minutes, between 8:29 and 8:55am. The first call went straight to voicemail. The next two calls were answered on the first ring at which point a loud and exasperated sigh was heard both times and then both calls were promptly disconnected (hung up on). At 8:40am, the caretaker texted the following message: "I had to come in sorry." She had made entry to the cottage with no prior communication informing us that she was doing so. We were given no opportunity to secure our private belongings or our dog. All of these events significantly impacted our vacation experience and I followed up with the agency owner to communicate my dismay. We did exchange a couple of polite emails but in the end, the agency owner took no responsibility for the situation and refused to offer any partial refund of the amount I paid. I felt as though she shrugged off my concerns and was extremely dismissive. Having rented over a dozen rental properties before, it was not the response I would have come to expect from someone running a reputable business. Upon my return home, I did submit detailed reviews of my experience to relevant websites and also initiated a BBB claim requesting a 10% partial refund as compensation for my experience. In response, the business owner accused me of extortion (see the online BBB complaint) and emailed me threatening me to "stop writing these things or I will have to consult my attorney." It should be noted that she did, eventually, send a compensation check equal to just under 5.1% of the rental and fee amount I paid. This amount, from my perspective, was not reasonable compensation for being without an advertised appliance for more than half of our stay and also enduring the invasion of privacy and rude phone etiquette from the caretaker. I share these details for other vacationers like me who appreciate honest reviews of businesses with whom they are considering signing a contract. read more

This is the 3rd year my husband and I and 2 little dogs have stayed at Rocko's Cottage in Bar Harbor. This place is just as clean and cozy as the first time that we stayed here. The cottage is decorated so nice with comfortable furniture and lovely decorations, and is so very clean. The towels are snowy white, and there is a stackable washer & dryer in the bathroom. Lisa & Rick are just about the nicest people you would want to have as landlords. Rules here are strict so it is expected that everyone respect the place. We can't say enough about how nice it is to come back here after a day on the water or walking around. One of the best things is that the cottage is in a residential neighborhood with just a few minute walk to the main area for shopping or dining. read more

Rented Old Point Seaside in the fall of 2020. We had rented it about 5 years ago and it was fine, but clearly they have allowed it to fall into disrepair. Not a great company to deal with. The hot water was coming out like sludge (eventually repaired after ruining a load of laundry and having to buy water and take cold showers, but more than 24 hour response). Holes in the furniture, mice, bathroom smelled horrible and was not clean. Will never do business with them again. No wonder they don't have a way to rate the properties. If I could give zero stars, I would. This rental company was awful and ruined our vacation. Due to a misunderstanding regarding our check out date, we did not check out by 10am. The owner of the property where we were staying, Canterbury Condo, was extremely rude and aggressive and packed our belongings and left them on the street after we were only 45 minutes late. It was a complete violation and ruined our vacation. And all of this while we had a toddler also. There was no understanding, no apologies and absolutely no assistance from any party involved to try to troubleshoot what was clearly an error. When I called to speak with Rebecca about this, she was aggressive and extremely rude, completely uninterested in troubleshooting or assisting. It was the worst customer service I have ever received. A simple conversation and some kindness could have easily resolved the issue and we received none of that from any party. read more

As a New Englander, Acadia has become one of my favorite locations to eat, read, exercise, sleep and otherwise decompress. Thus on my fifth multi-week vacation in Bar Harbor, I was lucky enough to connect with Rebecca and BHACR. This time for the same price of a hotel a friend and I enjoyed renting a pet-friendly private house, (the Drummond House, a block from Cafe This Way), complete with full kitchen, off-street parking, free laundry, sauna, and gas grill. It was a lucky day when we came upon the web site for Bar Harbor Acadia Cottage Rentals. From the beginning to end, they guided us in creating the most perfect family vacation. They were helpful not only in selecting the house, but guiding us in where to go/what to do in Bar Harbor, generously assisting us with the delivery of a mobility scooter we got for our 80+ year old mom and just there for us for anything we needed. Gail who works there is a concierge and the book she wrote, Local Island Concierge Activities Guide" was a great asset, even with us being very familiar with the Bar Harbor/Acadia area. From the start, we didn't have an easy request, meeting needs of 10 people of various ages plus 2 dogs. We ended up in Sunset Haven by the Sea which true to its name was a beautiful haven with incredible views of the sea and amazing sunsets. The house was perfect in every way - gorgeous inside and out and did I mention the views? The furnishings were super comfortable and perfect, both the dining room table and the deck table comfortably fit all 10 of us and one bedroom was more wonderful than the next - the beds made us feel like we were floating on air and we all slept like logs. The owners of the house responded immediately to any small issues we had and were so accommodating in every way. If asked to give a 5 star rating, with 5 being the best, I would give a 10+ rating both to Bar Harbor Acadia Cottage Rentals and to our week rental of Sunset Haven by the Sea. We rented George's Garden in Bar Harbor from this agency this summer. The entire experience was exceptional, from start to finish. The office staff was prompt with all communications, generous with her time, and overall just kind about everything. The cottage was SUPERB. I have never stayed in a rental (much less a hotel or resort room) so clean and well cared for. It was the perfect spot for our family -- one the staff recommended for a variety of reasons, all of which she was right-on about. All deposits, contracts, refunds of security fees -- all of that was expeditiously handled. I cannot say the same for my experiences on VRBO or similar sites. You just get top-quality care and customer service through this agency that you can't get on a do-it-yourself site. Honestly, it was the best vacation experience we've ever had.
