You can take a tractor ride into the orchards for $6. For additional charges you can pick your own apples and fill your bag as much as you can fit. Cut fresh flowers and sunflowers. You can also pick other fruits and veggies that are in season. Then make your way to the market that has everything from jams and jelly's to honey and fresh made fudge and fresh fruit smoothies and a variety of flavors of fried pies. You also have a selection of breads and apple breads. And did I mention apples? Bags and bags of apples are also available for sale. We tried the dried apple and the chocolate pecan fried pies.... They were good but nothing spectacular. Wish they were warm as would have tasted better in my opinion. Cashiers were nice overall and helpful with our questions. We took a family trip up to R&A Orchards this fall to get some fresh apples for baking and snacking. Most of the fruit were fresh and perfect for picking if you were tall enough to get them. A lot of the trees had already been picked over, but once we got to the end of the section, we had a little more luck. We had purchased the large bag to fill and the amount of apples we were able to pick was impressive. One thing that we did not like was how much dusty/dirt was thrown onto us via the tractor pulling our wagon to the picking spot. This is bound to happen on a farm though, so we can't be too upset about it! We were not able to pick flowers as there had been frost that morning that ruined the flowers. We will plan to go earlier in the season next year to experience that. We enjoyed browsing the canned goods in the store and buying fresh produce to bring home for cooking. read more

Smaller orchard than the others we went to in the area with a smaller variety of apples available. We came to pick apples, not realizing that they only do this on weekends. Whoops! Actually, both U pick flowers and apples are on weekends only. Plan accordingly. We did like that they had a kitchen area with an abundance of fruity baked good options but also savory yummies to enjoy. I wish I had the chance to try the chicken and dumplings. Another time! Great and HUGE selection of fried pies (many of which have homemade fillings. We tried sweet potato and peach). Both were very tasty with a crust that was perfectly buttery and flaky. We also got: -apple pecan butter -apple bread -apple cider donuts -1 caramel apple - 1/2 peck assorted apples We really liked the donuts, pies, and apple pecan butter. As a tweenager and teenager, my parents would drag me out for "Rides in the country". I hated these rides in the southern tier of New York State. One thing that was good was the stops at the orchard stands. I loved getting a great, fresh apple to chow down on in the back seat. I was prejudiced in favor of New York State apples. A friend at church in middle TN heard I was going to north east GA and told me I HAD to get apples. Reluctanly, I stopped at this place. It was random, the first I noticed. Boy, did I have fun and got great fruit. Not only did I enjoy the shopping and goodies, my traveling companion smiled at his purchases, and he rarely shows any emotions. When I got back home, my family didn't exactly dance around the kitchen table, but the did like what I bought and brought home. I'm smiling at the memories of stopping there as I write this. October is the busiest time for apple picking. Lines was long for the fried pie as well as the ladies two stall bathroom. I was in a search for Georgia's famous pecan pie. The other popular orchard stop making them altogether. While I was in line with my husband purchasing apple cider donuts. The cashier overheard my husband and I about the pecan pie. We were in luck the young lady at the cash register was able to sell us the last pecan pie. I am so happy she was there. For a while, I've been looking for a list of quintessential Georgian experiences. You know, a few things that really capture the spirit of the state. Catch a Braves game. Take the trip to Plains and sit in on Jimmy Carter's Sunday school lessons. Pay respects at the MLK memorial. I've happily done these things. Add this to the list. I'll admit it, I'm a city slicker. But the north GA mountains have much to offer. Chief among these experiences are the events surrounding the apple harvesting season. Ellijay hosts an annual festival for this purpose, which my family really enjoys. We made the shlep from the city, maybe an hour and a half, and poked around the town, which was covered with tents and exhibitions. Beautiful place, seriously. There are many orchards that host pick-your-own events, and R&A does this with serious efficiency. With two children, we bought them each a small pickin' bag and they filled em up quickly. After that, an included ride in one of the several circulating tractor carts (hayride style) gave a view of the lovely 500 acres, which also produces vegetables and flowers. My young son adores large equipment, so seeing the huge tractors made him super happy for the rest of the day. Peruse the farm store, too. Word is, of the competing orchards, this may be the only attached farm store that's open year round. It's lovely, but be aware there's lots of people at their annual peak time. We had a blast. Everything you could want and hope for from an apple orchard during the Fall! Thoughts and Recommendations: - Flowering Picking! My friend and I weren't expecting the first stop on the tractor to be a field of flowers but I'm glad we stopped. We paid $8 I believe for a tall cup and scissors/shears. You could cut and gather as many of the flowers as could fit in the cup. Then return the scissors and wait for the tractor to pick you up. - Apple Picking! My goodness there were so many apple trees and so many different types of apples to choose from. We paid $10 for a bag and gathered as many apples as we could fit in our bags. - The market/bakery was spacious and full of fall goodies. Jams, pastries, apples, etc. I could go on and on. My friend and I ordered apple cider slushies and a box of apple cider donuts. Delicious! - Staff was all so friendly! Everyone we encountered so warm and kind. Overall I loved our experience at R&A Orchards. It was quite a roadtrip to get here (1.5 hours from the city with no traffic) but worth it in my opinion. Will definitely be back! read more

I visited R & A with a friend of mine who lives close to this area. Its one of her favorites! I purchased some fresh veggies - cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. They have a great selection of fried pies- so i had to take a few of those home! Apple, peach and sweet potato! Yum! To end our visit my friend and I shared a cup of their home made peach ice cream! It was fabulous and on a HOT GA day, it hit the spot. :) Will definitely be back. read more

If you are all about apple picking, this is the place! It does not have any of the frills and gimmicks like a petting zoo, slides, or pig races like some of the other places. There is a shop with food including ice cream, baked treats, fudge, etc. and then the apple picking itself. The parking lot gets crowded so arrive early to avoid that. It is $5 to ride the tractor trailer from the entrance to where you can pick. Along the way, they tell you about the land, how many acres, trees, and a little history. You arrive at the place and can buy your bags there. $8 for a half peck. From there, you are free to roam wherever you want and they had a ton of varieties of apples. In early October, there were still a lot to choose from. read more

We decided not to pick any apples ourselves due to the weather but we did find a good supply inside the store at reasonable prices. There were many baked goods and other products for sale. Came here this weekend to pick some apples with some friends. They were one of the few orchards in the area with apples this year. The late frost in April this year made for a bad harvest this fall, so a lot of places are already fresh out of apples. This farm is really large though. It was $5 admission + $10 for a 1/2 peck bag. Apple picking fun! ⁣ ⁣ I told my husband last week that if our baby didn't come by this weekend, I wanted to go apple picking! The last time we went was October 3 years ago, so my 2-yr-old had never been. Unfortunately, he was a little wild the whole time, so my poor husband had the task of wrangling him while my daughter and I walked around getting apples. Maybe next year my son will do better because I definitely want to go back! ⁣ Let me just say that R & A Orchards is the place to go if you want to pick apples. It was busy, but not overwhelming the way BJ Reese was. We had actually planned on going to BJ Reese until we saw the line backed up a mile or so on the road. ⁣It was ridiculous! Obviously, BJ Reese is the one most people have heard of, but you actually pass R & A Orchards first. ⁣ I'm so glad we went here instead because the views are beautiful and the apples looked amazing. Everything inside the store was delicious and this preggers definitely indulged in an apple cider donut because it was to die for. The people were friendly and the whole experience was wonderful! *One thing to note: if you need a stroller to walk around the orchard, you CAN bring one. I asked inside about it and she wasn't sure, but she said it likely depended on how full the wagon ride up to the orchard was. Since every wagon was full, we didn't think we could bring it. I wish we had despite the crowd because my son was a little too young to not be contained. Next time, we'll bring one on the wagon with us! read more

Great place! But if you're visiting do not stop in the road to turn there or pull out in front of anyone!!!! There are a lot of bad wrecks there and they need to make the entrances one way so you can't turn out into the road on the blind side of the hill. This is our favorite orchard. They have the best blueberries, local tomatoes and peaches. We found them last year when we stayed in Elijay and still drove down from Blue Ridge this year. We're 2 minutes from Mercier Orchard but were not impressed with the fruits and produce there. They have a huge selection of fried pies and the fresh soup of the day is amazing. In addition, they have local honey, jams, jellies, fresh bread, pastries, pies and fresh ice cream and gelato. Pretty much everything tastes delicious! read more

There is no doubt R&A Orchard is a great place to pick your own apples! Different apples have peak ripeness schedules, so for our visit Golden Delicious and Rome Beauties were our apple of choice. The Golden Delicious were enormous and a perfect sweetness. They were so large in fact that my grandson thought they were balls and tossed the first one or two he found. I must say for a two year old he has a good arm! The tractor ride through the orchard was nice and the mountain views in the distance are gorgeous, but the best part about this orchard is the store. Great fried pies and outstanding slushies'. If you get nothing else here, get the peach slushie. They also have pretty good boiled peanuts, fresh vegetables and lots of house made preserves, jams and chow chows. If you have kids, the only draw back to visiting this orchard during picking season is the lack of fun activities offered here as they are at other nearby orchards which include petting zoos, cow milkings, ziplining and other fun stuff!!! However, the same owner of this orchard is the twin sister to the owner of BJ Reece's just 4 miles down the road. So by paying both a visit you are keeping it in the family :-) read more

They have absolutely the best fried pies...and believe it or not, the Coconut is the best of all the flavors...apple, peach, strawberry, blue berry cream cheese, strawberry cream cheese, sweet potato, lemon..... This orchard has amazing peaches! I always walk in to smiling faces and helpful staff. My daughter loves the cider slush and going to the restaurant for fried bologna sandwiches. Apple season is coming around again. The varieties they sell are all good. You can buy as little or as much as you can get home. The fried pies here are pretty large and I took a large variety home. My family said they where good but preferred another orchards. In early spring they sell vegetables and herbs for your garden. I also come on for local fresh produce and my dad 's beloved hoop cheese. That woul be in the cooler. You can also choose from many sauces, jams and local honey. This is my local stop for a lot. We really love this place. The owners Roger and Ann have finally retired. I do enjoy here their story and how they started the orchard (ask someone and they will tell you). The apples are crisp and delicious - nothing like the mushy and bland ones at the grocery store. You can even try each variety of Apple on the farm In the store before you buy. We go back and let the kids pick what they want and then go buy another bushel for cooking at home. If you go early in Apple season you can get peaches.
