The customer placed their card by the reader, to receive the refund (as is usual for most places) but the guy behind the counter smacked his hand away and told him that he said not to put his card there. I could tell it took the customer aback. As soon as the customer left, the man behind the counter called him a "stupid animal." I confronted him, asking him why he feels it's alright to put his hands on someone, and his justification is that he told the customer to not put his card by the reader. He then said that he should've punched him instead. I asked him again, why he thought it was okay to put his hands on someone, and he repeated the same thing, but this time included that he should punch ME in the head. Absolutely ridiculous behavior. I won't be returning here, and I suggest you don't either. Man behind the counter was an old short guy with a beat up newsboy cap, chains and a big silver cross around his neck. Stay away from him if you aren't white.

A locksmith, and a hardware store in general, is one of those annoying things that you inevitably find yourself needing, and more often than not can't find a good one that's open late enough after work, is close enough to your house, and all those other things that frustrate you about locksmiths. So I was pleasantly surprised to find one literally on the same block as my apartment building. The first time I went in, I was trying to get a key duplicated, and they said they couldn't do it for me. I only realized later that it was one of those annoying keys that only your landlord can duplicate, so I definitely don't fault the hardware store for this. I'm pretty sure most places wouldn't have been able to do it either. I haven't had many occasions to go into this store since then, but I did go in again today to buy bubble wrap. The guy working there (who I think might have been the owner) was very friendly and helpful, but the small roll of bubble wrap was $15, and it was just a fraction of the amount I could have gotten at Staples for the same price. At first I thought I was the only one who found it expensive, but I was just talking to my super about what I'll need to move out of my apartment, and he warned me not to buy them from this place because of their prices. With that said, this is obviously a mom and pop spot, and I have to wonder how else you stay in business as a hardware / everything store that is rarely buzzing with customers, in a neighborhood that is quickly gentrifying and no doubt raising the rent. Though My Favorite is probably overpriced, I'd like to think that they make for it in convenience, character, and neighborhood charm. If you're in midtown Manhattan looking for bubble wrap, I don't think I'd send you here first, but if you live in the hood and need a deadbolt for your apartment door (which we all do, don't fool yourselves now), give My Favorite a whirl.

Those shops wish they were Mazzone though. If I have the time (which I rarely do), I would much rather come down here. The folks behind the counter are friendly, knowledgeable, and they've always got everything I need. The prices are reasonable as well. It's just a little too far for me to walk for just a lightbulb or a screw that I need, but for larger purchases, or if I have actual questions, I find it's worth it. One thing that I like getting from them is my Christmas tree every year. They've always got a great selection, and I'd rather spend my money locally than with the Home Depot, the Whole Foods, or even the dudes on the street who trek down from Canada or wherever. Here the service is better and friendlier; the trees are great, they will saw the end off it (necessary for drinking the water up), and help me strap it to my car if it's too big to fit inside (or if I'm trying not to get needles everywhere). Plenty of off brand and cheap Chinese goods, but you can actually find some decent and useful stuff here at very cheap prices. The organization isn't great, but the guys who run it are very friendly, know their stock, and will help you find anything you need. They make 99 cent keys too, which is great. Two quick examples: 1) I needed a staple gun, looked on Amazon, wasn't satisfied with the time to get it or the price so I went over the store, and there was what I needed up on the wall - an American made, lightweight staple gun at a great price. 2) Toilet broke, needed a new arm inside it to connect to the flapper. The one in there was a cheap plastic thing that snapped. Went across the street, asked, and a minute later was brought a solid metal one for two bucks. Boom, done. This place has a second location that is more hardware store than home goods around the block on Franklin Ave between Bergen & St. Mark's. Between the two stores you can pretty much find anything you need. These places combined trump Mayday Hardware any day of the week in terms of service and price.
