Just moved to the area recently, and as a new homeowner I've gone to Home Depot and Lowe's numerous times. Each time I'm annoyed by how unfriendly the sales associates are... and how difficult it is to find anyone able to help answer my questions in the department (side note: those that do show up to help do not exactly give off "welcoming" vibes). So the other day I discovered R&M Hardware and made a mental note to pop in there the next time I needed something, anything, because I would much rather support a local business if possible. Went into R&M earlier today just to pick up a few small items and some paint samples. As I'm checking out the paint, an employee (my apologies, I don't recall his name) comes over to check on me. When I mention that I'm just browsing paint options, but that I could use HVAC air filters, he asks, "What size?" I told him what I needed, and his response was, "I'll go grab them for you!" Next thing I know, he's snagged the air filters and has them waiting at the register... and then a minute later, he was back by my side to answer some questions about paints. And air filters. And yard maintenance. Great experience, and I'll definitely be going to R&M Hardware again - like probably tomorrow because I've already made a list of other stuff I should buy. read more

R & M Hardware is one of the last remaining "old-fashioned" hardware stores in Northern NJ, and I can absolutely see why it has been able to survive for over 30 years even with the ever increasing presence that Home Depot and Lowe's has. Everything about this store is perfect. They have so many products; every single nook and cranny is filled (but in an organized fashion). What they don't carry, they can easily and quickly order for you. Besides being associated with True Value, they are also a Benjamin Moore paint dealer. Perhaps the greatest aspect of this hardware store is the staff. Every single employee is knowledgeable, incredibly helpful, courteous, and personable. These are the type of people who you can become friends with and have actual conversations with. Every employee (Rick Sr., Madeline, Rick Jr., Jeff, Ginny, Harold, Frank, and Kevin) have different skill-sets and knowledge which makes the entire operation run smoothly and efficiently. I went in and bought 2 shark bite shut off valves ($21 each) and I installed them but one of them was leaking, granted the pipe I installed it in has been painted on and was dented a little on the side that's up against the wall (picture included)... I then cut the pipe and brought it all in there with the valve and the guy made me buy the tool to disconnect it, that was his way of helping me, I bought it ($3) and we tried taking it out but it didn't come out, I said can you exchange it? He said "you broke it, so now you want me to be out $21 bucks, I'm a small business and I got to make money". But I guess it's okay for me to be out $24 bucks now and want me to buy another one for $21 bucks and I was also in the process of buying an elbow and a connector, so I walked out. He kept telling me what I did wrong. That is horrible customer service imo, I'm not a plumber, I'm just a local home owner trying to save a few bucks by doing this myself but instead I'm out $24 bucks and had to go buy everything at Home Depot which is much cheaper anyway...
