When you arrive at a local place during the lunch rush and can't find parking you know you are in the right place. Then you smell the smoke from the open grills -- oh my goodness! The dipped shoulder and chicken plates were great, and the sides of hash brown casserole, potato salad, and vinegar slaw were a hit too! I can't say enough about my stop here. The location is off the main thoroughfare by a couple of blocks and the building is unsuspecting but the smell of the bbq smoke let me know I was in the right place. From the time a walked in the door I was welcomed in like I was family. I had been traveling the country visiting family and friends for over 2 weeks. Miss Anita made me feel like I was just stopping in for a visit. The food was outstanding pork chops and Ribs needed no sauce with the flavor from the smoker and texture was on point as well. Sides were good. Prices are outstanding for the quality of food you are getting. I would recommend going out of your way to stop in to see Miss Anita. I ordered take out for my husband's retirement party in Nashville. I had people attend who were from all over the United States and they were in love with the food - everyone wanted to know where they could get it. Very disappointed to find out my mom brought it all the way from Kentucky. Shredded pork was a huge hit. Generous portions, everything delicious and reasonably priced when everything seems so inflated. If I'm in town and they are open - I'm there! read more

This restaurant has a very friendly staff, good food, and fast service. The portions were generous. I had the pulled pork with hash brown casserole and vinegar slaw. My husband had the shoulder plate with green beans and mayo slaw. All these were great choices. read more

Yes, it's a hole in the wall. Not fancy, but clean enough. If you have a chance, try it. There's a giant grill across the back wall of the kitchen where a gentleman is cooking over wood coals. Ribs, chicken, pork and I don't know what all else are being mopped with a vinegary, spicy sauce from heaven. I didn't see any of the ketchup like barbecue sauce that's usually all over everything in a barbecue joint. Homemade potato salad was great, slaw and beans were ok, but the meat was wonderful! If you're looking for genuine, quality Southern BBQ, this is the place. I went with a group of three and we had the shoulder, pulled pork and chicken. All three were fantastic. The mild sauce was very good and had a slight kick to it so I imagine the hot sauce was all bite. All in all, I highly recommend this place and will return the next time I pass through. read more

What many people do not understand is that the sliced shoulder served in this area is unique to the area; It's called Monroe County Style BBQ. In Wes Berry's Book "KY BBQ" he indicated that it may be a stretch to even call it BBQ because it is not smoked for very long at all. However, in my book they can call it anything that they want, I'll call it absolutely delicious. What is unique about this BBQ is that the shoulder is sliced the thickness of country ham or thinner. I'm not sure how much the shoulder is smoked but as far as I can tell the meat is sliced while frozen before any cooking. It is usually served dipped in a spicy hot vinegar and lard sauce seasoned with red cayenne and black pepper. Usually BBQ Restaurants serving this style also serve smoked pork chops, which are fantastic as well. This unique style of BBQ has branched outside of Monroe County, KY going as far west as Bowling Green, KY (Warren County) traveling from Tompkinsville, KY (Monroe County), through Edmonton, KY (Barren County) before arriving in Bowling Green. This style also extends south into Celina, TN (Clay County) and Lafayette, TN (Macon County) and occasionally pops up in Carthage, TN (Smith County). I used to travel this area quite frequently because of my job; however, now that I'm retired, I don't get up in this area very often and I really miss this wonderful style of BBQ that you can't get anywhere else. read more

Now this is the BBQ I was expecting from southern Kentucky. Anita is about the sweetest woman you will meet, and the pulled pork was some of the tastiest I've ever had. The ONLY reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5 is that it wasn't open half the days I was in town so I could enjoy it more.
