We stopped in here because we read about their wings online and wanted to give them a try. We sat at the bar and had a couple of beers and ordered some wings, potato salad, double burger and potato cakes with pork on top. The wings were smoked and super delicious, potato cakes were really loaded and the burger BIG. The potato salad was just okay but overall good food. This is a local neighborhood bar and everyone was having a good time. They played great music, had tons of seating and some games. It was very clean including the restroom A plus. Came here with a couple of friends on a early Saturday evening. The place was not very busy at all. The bartender/host was very welcoming and helpful. We ordered a dozen wings with sauce on the side... They gave us one each of all the sauces, which was nice. We also each ordered the all American hamburger, two with buns and two without. Our friends really liked the wings, but my wife and I prefer not the whole wing. They were well done, however. Our burgers were good, a bit too well done for our liking However. I just assume have a Freddys or Culver's burger. Sides of coleslaw and potato salad were again OK, but nothing great. Overall, the food is OK, but just fairly average in my opinion. they do have a nice outdoor patio, although it might be too hot in the summertime as there is no covering for shade. read more

Pictures make this place look better than in reality it is. Took my wife for a quick bite and a couple beers. 5 people in whole place. Greeted after close to 10 minutes. Ordered burgers and beers and a couple wings. Burgers were ok at best. Served with some A1 sauce. R tater cakes were decent and a nice alternative to fries but not quite done all the way so still mushy and fell apart. Wings were very underwhelming. Buffalo sauce was almost NON-existent. Beers were great but unfortunately that's it. Probably won't be back EXCEPT maybe to play NBA Jam. read more

I really wanted to love this bar because it has the potential to be fantastic. The wings are absolutely amazing, so definitely order delivery, but don't bother coming here to drink. The space is great and what I love: divey feel with bar games (pool, shuffleboard, darts). However, the partial owner/bar manager, James, is so stingy, it really hurts the bar. Even the Mug Club "special" of $4 double wells is not worth it because James maaaaybe gives you a slightly strong single, not a double, and he insists on training the new bartenders, so this cheapness will continue. You can barely taste the alcohol. He also insists on opening the garage doors when it's 85 degrees out, and even when he doesn't open the doors, he barely runs the AC. If I'm sweating sitting down having a cold drink, I know the bar and kitchen staff must be miserable. We came in one weekend to watch a Big10 game, but he wouldn't put it on the TV we were watching even though we were the only ones at that TV because there was "a bigger game" on and told us he would get us on a TV somewhere. Even though multiple people had been asking for the game, they had to remind him to put it on when it started, only to find out R Bar didn't have Big10 Network like he promised. Not sure if they just missed the bill that month or they never had it. Thanks for making me miss the first quarter for nothing. James claims he wants regulars, but you don't get regulars by being cheap or by implying the sports game they want to watch isn't important enough. I've heard complaints from the bar staff about him taking a portion of the tips, which is unacceptable as partial bar owner. He should be helping because he wants the bar to run smoothly, not to get a portion of the tips. I'll be surprised if he doesn't run this bar into the ground in the next couple of years because unfortunately PHENOMENAL wings cannot save a bar (seriously, do yourself a favor and order delivery). Yes, I am bitter about my experience here because I was sucked in by my first experience with the guy that usually runs the kitchen who is genuinely friendly, and I paid for the Mug Club membership, but quickly learned I did not want to be at R Bar when James was working. Save yourself money and go downtown to places like Red Lyon where their doubles ($6 for Jack) taste more like triples. $2 more and you're getting a better quality and much stronger drink. read more

I came in Saturday July 2, 2022, and it was oddly slow in there (maybe being so close to July 4). First time ever there, and they have a jukebox (AMI). I work Saturdays until 4:30p, so it as such a nice place to chill and wind down. I'm always excited to play music. Anyway, I got 2 Margaritas, and some kind of pulled pork quesadilla that was bomb. We started with a different bar tender, and then had a slender blonde bartender later who helped me pick my dinner. My only one qualm is that k would have loved to have seen other hard cider options. No worries though. The fights were on the TVs, and as it was time for me to head out, it looked like the regulars started pouring in. I'll be back for sure. I'm looking forward to coming back in a cooler night, so I can enjoy the patio potentially. Talked to a bartender for awhile who was originally from Dayton, OH. I have been a long time fan of this bar. It is a great place, especially in the summer with their patio. Recently I had heard that they have food and some good wings so decided to go try them out. On first glance, the wings looks very pricey. $28 for a dozen really threw me off and I told myself those better be the best wings I have had. Do not let this price fool you though, a wing in R Bar language means the whole wing. So really you get 24 wings for the $28. Please keep this in mind because I would absolutely hate for the price to deter someone from trying these wings. The mantra with these wings is they do not use fryers or oil to make their wings. They smoke the wings and then throw them on a grill to get a nice char and fall off the bone flavor. Not to mention the brown sugar brine these wings sit in definitely adds some flavor. We decided to get the wings with the sauce on the side (highly recommended). We got a regular buffalo and the "melt your face off" flavors. Both sauces had excellent flavor and the hotter one actually had a ton of kick to it and I enjoy spicy foods. Combine these great sauces with the wings that have unbelievable flavor and you have a home run with these wings. I would say out of all of the wings I have ever had, these are near the top. Awesome bar. Great environment, friendly staff, well priced drinks. The staff is very capable and competent handling the rush during peak times, and on New Years Eve the owners were running everything behind the bar which speaks to the quality of the ownership. The bar has some cool retro arcade games in the back as well as an awesome patio that is a cool place to kick back in the summer time. Also, the food is great. I had no expectations coming in and ordered the tacos and was floored at how good they were as I was not expecting the quality of the food to be on the level of anywhere else. My friend had the wings and was initially weary of them because of the price, shorty after a dozen gigantic wings arrived that he said were the best he's ever had in Lawrence. I've had the pleasure of going to this neighborhood watering hole twice now and I haven't been disappointed yet. The staff is friendly and attentive, Kevin is a joy! The food is delicious and fresh, the wings people...eat the wings! My only constructive criticism would be that the tacos need some more flare to them, I love the simple bar food menu but some cilantro, pico de gallo or even a special slaw just for the tacos would go a long way. It's honestly one of the cleanest places I've seen in a long time. I wish there were more events here, like a comedy night, open mic or even a game night. If Yelp would allow zero stars, I would give that rating. Their service is reprehensible. The owner of the bar literally told a visually disabled person he couldn't bring his seeing-eye dog in. Not only is this despicable, it's illegal. The owner is clueless. There are plenty of better bars in Lawrence. Edit: The owner was rude. My friend never asked before taking his service dog in the bar, because he didn't have to. The owner went up to the group and told my friend that he would have to take the dog outside. When my friend tried to explain the dog was a service dog, and that the Americans with Disability Act makes it illegal to refuse service to a person with a disability, the owner said he "reserves the right to refuse service to anyone" and told the group to leave. No, this was not a simple misunderstanding. The owner was made aware of the law, and chose to be difficult. As an owner of a business, it's his responsibility to know what the law is. read more

1st let me say this review has nothing to do with the R's food or drinks. I was attending the KSU - KU game with friends last weekend and K-State Alums picked this place to have a pre-game party. I'm not from Lawrence and had never been to the bar. I found a parking spot behind the bar in a Wide alley and found the last space a few spots down in front of some apartments. I'm not stupid, i looked for signs of no parking and nothing was posted on the grounds in front and other people heading to the bar we're parking there so i locked up and headed in. After the game, i came back to my Jeep and it was gone. You know the sinking feeling....I've been towed.. I saw a man over by the parking shed sweeping and asked if i might have been towed. Well, he said yes probably because it was permit parking....and then i saw it...BEHIND a DUMPSTER that you couldn't see driving in a small warning sign not to park....by Lighthouse Towing..... This was a $200 SCAM!! When my buddies took me to the place lo and behold several people lined up all towed from ...you guessed it. So R BAR, how about a little common sense and warn your customers about this.! You've been in business long enough to know this is going on. In closing...this is just a warning for others and if I save one person from getting scam towed. I'll be happy. read more

This is the worst experience I've ever had at a bar. Immediately upon entering the scrawny, smelly punk who was expected to pass as a bouncer accussed me of having a fake id. I'm not sure if this is because I'm from out of state, because my girlfriend is black or what but there was definitely a lot of prejudice. What was most upsetting is that he completely ignored my girlfriend trying to reason with him, as if she were less than human. I eventually got in by talking to his manager and only on principle drank on of their over priced beers. While I was drinking the "bouncer" and his cowardly friends talked a lot of smack...but only from no less than 20 ft away like cowards usually do. The bouncers treat people poorly at the door and smell terrible, the beer is overpriced and the music is terrible unless you're a hillbilly. In short it's a scumbag red neck bar. read more

I'd like to give this bar a better rating but for my last visit. So I'll start by telling you they have decent drink specials, a nice loud jukebox and plenty of games both inside and on the patio. I'll agree with a the last review that it would be nice if they had more live entertainment (beyond a DJ). Give me more of a reason to choose your bar over the 50 other bars in this town. One oddity to bring up that's really neither here nor there, and perhaps is an attraction. At 6'2", this place has the only urinal I've ever considered too high. I'm not sure why it was installed that way but whatever... So the bad part, I was there last week with a friend, enjoying great well specials and watched the bartender drop and break a glass in the ice. She immediately informed the bar back, who started picking out the large fragments and I assumed that was that and went back to my conversation. However, in less than a minute, the bartender came back and started scooping ice from the back into a new glass. I was like "whoooaaa...didn't you just break glass in there? You have to burn down all the ice, right?" She said, "well that's what I thought. I told him (the bar back). That was the policy at the place I came from". I was like, that's the policy EVERYWHERE! What if someone got a piece of glass in their mouth. Or worse, swallowed without knowing and got a perforated intestine and died of sepsis. It's no small thing and EVERY food/beverage service worker should know this. She immediately recalled the bar back who, none too happily removed and refilled all the ice. I'm glad that they responded to me rather than just blowing me off but it really makes me wonder what happens when I'm not sitting right by the main drink station. Owners/Managers, please train your staff! All in all a pleasant enough place to hang out but if you're drinking a mixed drink, do so at your own risk! read more

I used to really like R Bar! The big patio, the bring your dog night on Mondays, and the free popcorn were awesome! It was until a bunch of my friends went there tonight, one of which happens to have a vision disability, and they wouldn't let him in because he had a guide dog. A place that allows customers to bring dogs in on a certain night, but won't allow a person with impaired vision bring his service dog in?! Unbelievable?! Some people like to make life a little tougher than it is. I am not one of those people. I've been here twice. Once it was nice. Another time the owner was supremely rude to the guy my girl and I drove to the bar. We all left less than a minute after we went in the front door. I can't remember if I've seen 1,000 other places just like this one, or if it is 2,000. They are all the same. Except that R Bar has no room for the blind, and no dignity. Hopefully soon a grown up will call me up and apologize for ruining our evening. Until then, I'll be enjoying my nights out in Lawrence elsewhere. Zero stars. Several of my friends from law school went here last night, one of whom is visually impaired and has a service dog. The owner of this establishment refused to let a visually impaired man and his service dog inside. Even after they were informed by the man, the man's friends, and a police officer that his actions were a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the owner refused service. In the days following, the owner, the bar's employees, and the bar's patrons have made this an issue of "safe spacers" and "dog haters". THAT'S NOT THE ISSUE. The issue is violating federal law and discrimination against a blind man. It is not relevant that the bar has a dog night on Mondays for a service dog. Under federal law, a service dog and their Handler must be allowed inside all establishments (restaurants, bars, theaters, schools, shopping centers, etc) at all times. This behavior is disgusting and breaks my heart. UPDATE:(8/30/16) The version of events given by the owner during TWO different interviews completely contradict, not only each other, but also what he said at the time of the incident (he was in fact told by law students and the police that it violated the ADA at the time, in his first interview he said that he refused to allow Frosty in because he believed it to be a health code violation, and in his second interview he claimed ignorance and that no one told at the time of the incident). read more

Jason A. doesn't know what he's talking about. I was there and talked with the cop and the owner. First of all, I was outside with my blind friend the entire time, along with many more friends. We were there for a party and there were 20 law students present. After the owner initially kicked my friend out for having his seeing eye dog, we went outside. My friend called the police to have a cop come tell the owner that the Americans with Disabilities Act allows service dogs inside restaurants. Some people went inside to start drinking, thinking the cop would obviously clear things up. They are who Jason must be referring to. The dog is a seeing eye dog and has every right to be in the bar at all times and not just on Monday. The cop showed up and we informed him of what was happening. He said he can't force the owner to let my friend in, but that he would explain to him the ADA allows service animals to be inside restaurants. The cop went inside and came back out after talking to the owner. He said the owner still is refusing service because he believes he'd have to shut the kitchen down. That's wrong. The cop said he can't do anything unless the owner gets physical. The cop didn't agree with the owner. Not wanting to get the officer involved any more, I went to talk to the owner. I asked him if we could bring the dog in through a door on the patio and that way the dog would never come inside, thus avoiding even his concern about the health code (after all, you can smoke on the patio, so having a dog out there wouldn't be any worse). He said no. The only reason for him to say no was because he simply didn't want my friend and his dog there. Taking the dog through the patio door would have resolved his health code concerns, and a cop told him the law allows the dog inside and he still refused service. That's discrimination. That's when we decided to move our party elsewhere. Jason's right: write reviews from personal experiences. In this case, Jason might have observed part of what happened, but he lacks the necessary perspective and involvement to comment on what actually happened. read more

The two bartenders spent 90% of the time talking to each other rather than engaging with the customers. Refilled my beer using the same warm glass from the first beer. Maybe eight customers, and I still sat there with an empty glass for a couple of minutes before they offer to refill. I wasn't the only one waiting for a refill. read more

1 star because you can't give 0 stars. The owner violated federal law by prohibiting a service animal from entering the establishment. When confronted with the facts, did he apologize? No; rather, he continued to state that he thought it was a health code violation. And to make matters worse, the bar's Facebook page tried to claim that people were saying they hated dogs. What? That doesn't even make sense, considering that they allow dogs in the bar one night per week. Oh yeah, that's the kicker...dogs are allowed in the bar one night per week anyway! Was this that night? No. But it doesn't matter because it was a service dog. That dog is probably more well behaved and cleaner than most of the bar's patrons! read more

i want to like rbar because it's so close to my house, but i just can't. we gave it a second chance on a sunday afternoon - it was about 3:30 pm and we were told food wasn't served until 5. no problem, we ordered a pizza for delivery. about 30 minutes later (4 pm) - folks were picking up their food from the kitchen window. not cool. also, let's save the surly bartender act for an old pub in ireland, not a neighborhood bar. when one bartender couldn't find our tab on the register, they simply walked off. plenty of other amazing bars with stellar service in the LFK. read more
