I love this place! Food is great and so is the ambiance, however I was highly disappointed over graduation weekend. I went online to book a room for my graduation of about 15 people. I stated that I wanted a room and people would pay for their own meals. I even called to make sure the room was booked 3 separate times before graduation. I also went in person just to let them know which room I wanted and what all things I was going bring in such as a cake and a banner. The day of graduation comes and I go in to get my room and they sat me at a regular table. I was super confused as I had booked a room or so I thought. I got up and talked to one of the managers and she stated and those rooms come with a deposit of $100 which was never stated to me. I was super confused and upset because not only was I unable to hang my banner or enjoy an intimate gathering with friends and family, but my guests were super uncomfortable because I told them it would be in a room. The waitress was fantastic, but service beforehand was horrible! If I wanted to book a room and you told me it was booked then I am assuming it is booked. Very good food! The Buffalo Pizza is great, I had mine with blue cheese grumbles. Their Tavern Wing Sauce tastes like a "Whiskey Hot Buffalo Sauce" love the flavor and glad I ordered a whole bottle. The seasoned fries were very delicious pub style fries a++ We got their meat pizza and it was very good, only critique is they put most of the toppings around the center BUT the pizza was very very good! The Salad was of much higher quality than you see at other places with a mix of lettuces. The side of ranch we ordered was 8oz and tasted home made! It was a comparable price to other sauce sides at restaurants except you get 8oz not 2 tablespoons, excellent value! The cheese sticks which I figured would be small, were massive, excellent value for the money. The wait staff were friendly inside and seemed to enjoy being there, the atmosphere was of a classy but relaxed tavern, loved it. You guys deserve a great rating, keep up the great work! read more

One of the least favorite places I visited on my first night in the area. The kitchen closed early which wasn't a big deal but the bartender just simply didn't seem knowledgeable about mentioning some of the drink selections they might have offered. The crowd here is a majority of college kids. Plenty of parking, easy access to the streets as well. Prices are a bit high as well. read more

I used to love Johnnys, but my recent 9/3 visit there has caused me to rethink my perspective. I was in a party of four. Two of us ordered the "Rug BLT", I'm assuming for rugby or something. It was a BLT with an egg. Hard to mess up, right? Wrong. The sandwich did not have much bacon and the bread was barely toasted. I ordered the "Patty Melt", or Tank7 Melt. I put it in quotes because everyone in the world that I've ever met has the same vision of a patty melt sandwich. Normally it is a hamburger patty with cheese and onions and some sauce that have been grilled together as a sandwich. This was just two extremely thick pieces of Texas toast served barely toasted, and certainly without being cooked with the burger inside, the cheese, or any kind of sauce or grilled onions.The burger was just sitting on top of the lower piece of bread with a couple onion straws on top of the plain burger itself. There was the remnants of a piece of cheese underneath the burger, but it was a very thin piece of cheese if it was there at all. I really wish I had taken a picture of it because I've never seen such a sad looking excuse for a sandwich. I also asked for onion rings as my side, but instead of traditional breaded, onion rings these were essentially what you would make onion straws out of. Maybe they don't do traditional rings, and I don't know if they have recently change their supplier for onion straws or if they were out of onion rings, but they were horrible. The fourth person ordered a wedge salad. It was as expected but very little dressing, bacon, or anything else.....but more or the onion straws. Our server was also new and did fine but was not properly trained regarding etiquette. She pointed out the pre calculated tip amounts on the bill, in case we were having questions about how much to tip. Oh well. Plenty of other places to go in Lawrence. I used to love their Tank 7 Melt but not sure what happened. Hoping they had a new chef, or some other temporary glitch. read more

So, we came here last minute. They were able to accommodate us nicely and the food came out surprisingly quick. We split the nachos which were pretty good. I ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich and I thought it was fantastic. Good tangy sauce, fries were solid and maybe it's strange to say but their ranch is really good. All and all it was a great experience. I was surprised how good it was because I felt like it got beat up in the reviews. Also, just a side note. Someone got a burger and it looked a little puny. This is one of my favorite places in Lawrence. The food is always quality, some of the better restaurant style pizza I've had. I always get this with fries, I'm not sure what they do but these fries are always extra crispy and different than what most places serve. If you're big into ranch like me, this is some of my favorite. The prices are always great too, $5 for a giant slice of pizza and $2 fries. My friend and I just tried the cookie last night, which was absolutely amazing! Sometimes I feel like cookies at places like these are a little overhyped but this one was something special. I usually get the double stacked fried Oreos which are also good but you can't go wrong with either dessert here. read more

I'm not sure if Johnny's has been remodeled, but it definitely isn't the same place I came to on December. They have a huge indoor/outdoor patio that you can rent out for event spaces. (I only know because there was a party in there that prevented me from sitting on the patio. I ordered the high dive with cranberry juice instead of water, and it was light & refreshing. The quesadilla I ordered for an appetizer came out quickly and was made to perfection as you can see. The tortilla was crisp, the chicken was moist, and the pico de Gallo was already in so the sour cream and salsa portions are perfect. As my entree I enjoyed the Mac n cheese with buffalo chicken on the side. It was pretty good, but wasn't the best. The drinks are well worth the money paid. The food is comforting, the atmosphere is different, and the servers are very nice and pretty. When I walked in I didn't feel welcome, but the customer service I received was excellent, and had a lot to do with why this review is 5 stars. In town for work and this place was close by. Last at the front desk of the hotel suggested it. So i headed over grabbed a spot at the bar and ordered a French dip with season fries. The sandwich was good. Lots of thin slices meat and cheese and just the right amount of au jus sauce. Seasoned fries weren't bad and they came out hot which was nice. Great atmosphere to watch sports games, lots of TV screens showing multiple types of sports games from football, baseball, hockey, and basketball. All in all a great family atmosphere as well. Four stars alone for customer service. WOW. I went here as part of a very large group and it was very chaotic. While we were dining, another huge group came in but the Johnny's crew kept up. The servers handled this motley crue with professionalism and grace. I was very impressed. Is the food at Johnny's the best ever? No, not by a long shot. Is it good, solid fare? Absolutely. Basically it is the fast food equivalent of bar food. The food is good and hits the spot but it is nothing you will crave or rave about later. I ordered the fried shrimp plate and it was very tasty. The shrimp were sizeable and the salad was fresh and delicious. I had no complaints about my meal. There are several specialty dishes, as well, but I have never tried any of those. They are very popular, however. Our food was served quickly and everyone's order was correct. This is a big restaurant and there are televisions situated all around. This is the perfect place to watch a KU game while hanging out with friends. There are plenty of seats and space. There is another large room off the main restaurant that opens up for large meetings. Parking is not difficult, either. There is a large private parking lot and Johnny's is located in a strip mall. It is a busy strip mall but there always seems to be ample parking. Prices were reasonable for what the quality of service and the food. This is a long time establishment in Lawrence and they have quite a large local following. Johnny's west has become one of our "go to" places during the pandemic. The servers are great, everyone wears masks, they take sanitizing very seriously, etc. They have a great menu with a lot of variety, and everything we've tried has been tasty, and great value for the money (servings here are HUGE!!). The only thing I've been disappointed in was the hush puppies that came with my fried shrimp. The salads are terrific (and the tarragon vinaigrette is SO tasty) - my husband likes the chopped salad with steak. At Johnny's there's a minimal upcharge to add steak to his salad. At another restaurant around the corner, they charge you $12 to add steak to a salad. The French dip sandwich here is about the best I've ever had. The club sandwich is super tasty. There's Johnny's... the real Johnny's in North Lawrence. And then there are the knockoff/pretenders Johnny's that share little in common with the original location. They're country and city cousins. They share a common name and nothing else, save a menu. I'm not sure how different you could make the crowd that frequents both and the general attitude. For my money, this location, surely successful, could be a strip mall bar by any other name. Their saving grace? They get to carry Free State's Johnny's Blue Collar lager. It's fine. Otherwise, it's jam packed with people that live in a 'hood in houses that all look alike--slight varieties of biege--in an area of town where the politics take a decisive turn to the right from the rest of the island of Lawrence. The lawns chemically, perfectly coiffed, the garage doors down as the neighborhood rules state, their owners eying the next new development as soon as the house is a few years old and needs maintenance. This is not Lawrence. This is south Johnson County. Comprendo? On a Tuesday night, you can sit on one side and play trivia games so that you don't have to engage in conversation with those people you came with. I suppose this is popular, but after two minutes my friend and I quickly made a bee-line to the other side of the building to escape the din. God help us... someone tell me they aren't doing this at the original location. Came for a drink at a bar, not an entertainment center akin to a senior citizen's bingo parlor with a person shouting into a microphone. I suppose I knew exactly what I was getting into coming here. Don't think I'll be back, but look, don't pay any attention to my review. You know this kind of place. If this is the kind of crowd you seek, go for it. But you won't be going to the original Johnny's if that's the case. It's a little too blue collar there, a little too dingy. Just come here for what it is, not what it promises. The original Johnny's is a staple in Lawrence. This was my first time at this Johnny's location and I was there for a graduation party. The party was straight inside the door which was easy to find and the waitress got me a drink right away. After that when it got busier it was harder to find her to get another drink. The spread was nicely displayed with several pizzas, potato skins, salads, and finger foods. The food was decent I have to keep in mind it's bar food. I definitely liked the potato skins the best. I search for the "Johnny's Tavern" of any city I travel to - - lots of locals, great TVs, specials, and some signature dishes to hang your hat on. I particularly like the taco specials and the stoneground oven-baked pizza! The Nuke Laloosh is my go-to. Johny's Lager is specifically brewed for the blue collar crowd by Free State Brewery; there are specials every day, and the place is rentable for events (Hawk Talk features KU Football and Basketball coaches speaking about past games, future foes, interesting fun facts, trivia, and regularly invited players talking about their specialties and perspective). The burgers are dependent upon the distributor, but the last one I had was big and juicy. Don't be surprised if the crowd isn't quiet, particularly during home KU games (it's almost like being in Allen Field House!) While the staff isn't blood-related, they treat guests like family. Expect personal, friendly service, and if you're so inclined, some sass and maybe even a Dad joke. read more

They have a loyalty program that allows for $10 gift card for so many points (double on Monday's) - so, a great place for Monday night football!
