SO much fun! I love blues and this place delivers. The people were amazingly friendly too. All-around a great time. That said, there are definitely things I wish I had known before I went. RULES - Cash-only, $10 cover charge per person - BYOB. The bar menu is very limited. They've got most straight liquor and frozen margs, and that's about it. There's a liquor store next door if you forget to bring your own, but no mixed drinks or cocktails allowed (liquor only). - Bar is 25+. The crowd is on the older side but please don't let that stop you from coming. We're all young at heart here! GUIDELINES - Shady neighborhood, so be careful. A lot of the Dallas shootings tend to happen in Deep Ellum. Once you're in the bar, the atmosphere is totally different, but I wouldn't spend too much time outside - Bar doesn't open until 9 or so. I know what Yelp and Google say, but we showed up at opening and were told (very nicely) that they were closed, so we ended up waiting around for almost an hour. The band doesn't get going until 10 or later depending on the night. They do have a DJ going before the band, but for the best experience I'd recommend getting there around 10:30 or later

Went to RL last night with my wife and had a great time. It's a BYOB place with live blues band. The band performed great with songs from the Gap Band to BB King. They also had a Prince impersonator who was awesome. The atmosphere is mostly over 50 crowd with a small amount of 30"s. Cover charge was $10 per person and worth it, like I said before it's byob and everyone had their own liquor, beer and food. RL himself performed and you would have thought he was BB King himself. The place love him, which I found out later he do a lot of community work. If you are ever in Dallas make sure you check out RL Blues Palace. You will not be disappointed!

Pricing Onsite parking is $5. $10 entrance fee. It's a BYOB . There set-ups are $12 for a bowl of ice an 3 sm cans of juice. (Pricey) The waitresses come by often, often trying to get u to buy more. They also serve daiquiris and margaritas incase u dont bring liquor. You may bring hard liquor only. Waitresses were very attentive with great customer service. OVERALL: Everyone we met from the parking attendant to the door lady taking the money to Security, waitresses. Everyone was so hospitable. This is a nice size hole in the wall. We went on Friday. They had a live band. The man seem to be 60 and up sitting on stools but when I tell you they can play those instruments and sing. They were great, u won't be disappointed. This spot is for the older and mature crowd. If you dont like old school, blues, r&b this isn't the place for you. It's located down the street from Fair Park state fair grounds. It's an old building, bathrooms are ok. I was informed by regular that the owner and his son sung at one point, they both were great. You won't be disappointed. Great music, great people, everyone just having a good time like back in the day. I'm not a clubber but if I was, this would definitely be my spot.

Fun fantastic night...this is a REAL grown folk club no kids allowed. What can I say about this little place. I like the fact that it is BYOB. There is a live band that has 3 section with 3 different singers. My fav is the 2nd singer who calls for the hens. They have a dance floor that can be really full. I like the fact that everyone is having fun and feeling the music. No judgement or standing around. You can also bring food as well. I seen many tables that had actual dinners. They do charge a cover fee of $10 but thats to keep the lights on. Right across the street from the fairpark as well.

Party table & stage in the background!

The cover was reasonable, but the table service since it's a BYOB was rather pricey.

They weren't charging a cover at the door like they normally do. Personally, I think that door charge needs to go away completely. The seating arrangement is also a little awkward. If you come with one other person and only take two seats at a shared table, someone else can end up sitting directly across from you. I understand it's a live music venue, but when you're trying to eat and carry on a conversation, sitting face-to-face with strangers can feel uncomfortable. I've been coming to The Free Man for years, and I always order the Cajun wings. They've always come tossed in the Cajun sauce. Last night, they came out dry with the sauce served on the side. I asked about it, and I was told, "That's how they do it now." Since when? It honestly felt like my order was made incorrectly and they just put the sauce on the side to fix it. If that really is a new policy, why is the kitchen deciding that for customers? At the very least, ask whether we want the sauce on the side or tossed. I also noticed the wings seemed overcooked--the meat near the bone had a very dark brown color that I wasn't a fan of. The Cajun fries were still excellent, as always. I also ordered the red beans and rice. They were okay. Someone definitely got a little heavy-handed with the hot sauce. The rice was cooked well, but overall it was just average. For drinks, I ordered a ginger beer. Mine came in the can, while the person I was with received theirs poured over a cup full of ice, which watered it down. I would rather have the can and decide how much ice I want. I've also been hearing from other reviews that a 20% gratuity is automatically added. I didn't notice that on my bill, which makes me wonder if it was already included because the suggested tip amounts seemed unusually low. If gratuity is included, just be transparent about it. Don't make customers feel like they should leave an additional tip because they weren't clearly informed. Now for the best part: the band was fantastic. They're the reason I continue coming back. The Free Man has always been one of my favorite places for live music, but it feels like some of the little details have started slipping. People come here for great food, great music, and a relaxed atmosphere with like-minded people. Don't make the experience more complicated than it needs to be.

It's a nice sight to see! We stopped for the band and a nightcap after grabbing dinner downtown. There were 2 special bartender drinks on the menu. I was performing on a Saturday night & this was my first time playing in Dallas (I DJ). The whole staff was nice, really nice. They took care of me & everyone else on the bill. They have a nice patio out back with a high enough fence that no one could see me from the outside looking in. The place was spacious, I like how the tables were along the side wall while across is the bar + bar seating. In-between where the open floor sits the stage platformed high against a back wall. The sound was really good & they left the car garage looking doors up, which caught attention from those who were walking by outside. I enjoyed myself that night. I'll always come back, even when I'm not DJing. What I also enjoyed were the number of TVs on deck playing plenty of college football(this was the night of OU vs UT). That's a bonus for me when it comes to a bars + venues because I really like sports & to have options whenever it's present.

No frills but a good time. A great place for a birthday celebration. There's karaoke and a nice set up at that. They also serve hookah. The DJ was spinning. Nice lighting. The bartender hooked me up with some really delicious cocktails. Yes she was a real bartender/mixologist she came up with some drinks based off my preferences and they came out just right. The drinks are reasonably priced. I also had their wings and fries. Loved the crust on the wings it was crispy and flaky. The fries were real long hand cut fries. Again reasonably priced. They do add gratuity which is something I really can't stand. I noticed that certain establishments do this and I think it is really low class to do that. To assume that the type of patrons you attract are not the ones that like to tip is again low class. I am a very good tipper and I don't appreciate someone adding something for me. It kills the vibe because while you are taking 18% I might have thought you did an amazing job and wanted to give you 25%. I am not going to point out the places that do this but there is a certain demographic and I don't visit those places after I see how they nickel and dime you for things that are standard at other establishments. With all that being said I really think this is a nice spot that I would like to visit again. Just a night out with the girls.
