This is a very quintessential bar for my University on Wednesdays, and with the school year ending soon I had to go! They have deals on Wednesdays called 'Mug Club'. If you bring in one of their plastic mugs you get $3 beers on tap from their selection. It is the best deal and something super easy for a Wednesday! You can easily walk here on Wasson Way which is super nice, especially when the weathers nice. They have a great outdoor patio with a ton of seating, heaters, and covers in case it rains. Their inside if nice with a cool upstairs for more room. The best part about this spot is that they have a popcorn machine in the back that you can serve yourself, free of charge! I come here for the free popcorn alone, it is so good! We rented the upstairs space for a 40th birthday party and it was truly perfect for what we needed. The room is spacious, and they provide a large table so you can set up food, gifts, whatever you need. Even better, the space is free to rent, which is such a huge bonus! There are multiple TVs upstairs, and the staff was great about changing the channels on a few so we could watch a specific football game. Little touches like that made the night even better. The only downside was the bar situation downstairs. Knowing there was a large party booked, I really wish they had staffed more bartenders. Our guests mentioned that it was taking quite a while to get drinks, and eventually a few people ended up going next door instead. Overall, though, the space itself was fantastic and worked out great for the party, just hoping next time they're better staffed for big events! read more

If half stars existed, I'd give this bar a 3.5... based solely off of personal preference but I will try to be objective! Bottom line, the scene just isn't for me. I'm a mom in my middle twenties who stopped to grab a beer on my way home while my fiancé and kiddos were tucked in bed. Looking for just a chill place to sit at the bar for 30 minutes or so. This is not that type of bar. I personally love Irish pubs but this is more of a party area for young, single college kids. Which is totally awesome if that's what you're looking for! I was not, so I didn't really enjoy my time. For a Thursday evening, it was decently busy. The patio area is awesome and quite big. I sat outside for a few with about 20 other people and there was tons of room! The bathrooms were clean and spacious as well, something you don't easily find at bars. The inside bar area is very cute for a rustic Irish bar! 5 stars on the prices, though! Very impressed with $5 Jameson shots and $3.50 blue moon pumpkin ale (try it!!!). Expensive frat house with flat soda water. Was excited for a patio but really nothing about this place will have me coming back anytime soon. My brother in law went to get a couple beers for him and my sister. Came back a couple minutes later and said the bartender needed my sisters ID but not my sister. I have to say, I was hesitant to come here after my friends at Xavier claimed this was "one of their bars!!!" I'm not into sweaty bro'ed up college kids and last night (Monday) we visited and I was pleasantly surprised. Right away I noticed that this place reminded me of McClaren's from How I Met Your Mother. It's a neighborhood bar. Semi-divey but really clean and nice! There are two floors in what looks more like a house. There are cozy booths or you can pull up a seat at the bar. We chose to sit on the patio. Half of it is covered which was SO nice. It was raining, but still warm and it was so relaxing to sit out there and listen to the rain hit the roof. I can still hear it now...AND the best part? They have giant waterproof flat screens out there so you can watch the game. The drinks were cheap and strong just as you'd suspect. I got a titos and tonic and it was $5 bucks. I also got a $2.50 beer that was on special. The bartender was super friendly! I enjoyed chatting with him and I filled him in on how impressed I was with the place. He let me know about the infamous "MUG CLUB" On Wednesdays you buy a mug for $5 and the refills are $3. Domestic refills are $2.25. WHAT A STEAL! Fun bar especially on Wednesday summers. Mug Club are the only nights I have been here so I cannot speak for the others. Mug Club was a great deal $5 for a mug then $2 for a refill but they raised the prices to $3.25, now its an OK deal. But other than that it is a great time. Rain or shine in the summer expect a crowd and on a nice day the line to get in stretches down the block so come early and beat the rush. They have TV's lining the outside and inside walls so you do not have to miss the Reds game. The inside has a second floor with tables and stools. A good way to avoid the line is to take advantage of the waitresses roaming around so bring cash. Also as a suggestion if you do use them you might want to sharpie your name on your mug since they all pretty much look alike. Help your self with some free popcorn. read more

R.P. McMurphy's is one of my favorite bars around Cincinnati. Not a dive like The E but not pretentious either. The bartenders are friendly and efficient. Their "jukebox" has pretty much anything you would (or wouldn't) want to hear and that's no joke. Our group has played everything from La Douche (excuse me, La Bouche) to Linda Rondstadt. They have decent beers on tap (they've been known to carry BarrelHouse!) and great booze on-hand. Their patio and deck are pretty fancy no matter if it's sunny or snowy. And they allow puppies on their patio! Which is only a good thing if you like puppies, I guess. And it can get more than a little packed on a Friday or Saturday evening so expect a crowd. Weekday afternoons at R.P.'s were always my favorite time to go (unfortunately, relocation=no afternoons at R.P.'s). All in all, R.P.'s is just a really good neighborhood bar. I've always felt more at home here than the other Irish pub down the street (I think you know what I'm talking about). So, get away from a world that's driving you plumb crazy and belly up to the bar at R.P.'s. read more

A much nicer and larger bar than I expected. The place is clean and full of interesting movie and other entertainment memoribilia. The bartender was friendly and the beer selection is large enough for me. They can also serve smaller glasses which makes sampling the different beers easier. As Kara boldly proclaims, there is free popcorn which I didn't realize until I was leaving, probably for the best, as I eat that stuff like its my last meal. Parking might be tricky in this area on a busy night so plan accordingly. They often have live bands performing which can involve a cover charge... boo! Good deal for a drink, but not worth the overly loud music, 10 minutes trying to get someone's attention at the bar, and having to yell for anyone to hear me. Decent bar with something for everyone. They have live music on weekends, and there wasn't a cover when we went, which was a nice surprise. Outside offers fire pits and TVs, inside has a nice balcony, more TV's and lots of seating options. The beer variety is good as well. We live close enough to walk, so we haven't had to deal with the parking issues. Overall, a solid option to watch sports, listen to live music, or just hang out. Free popcorn! Do I need to say anything else? Well, okay I will. RP's is a casual bar that is not pretentious at all. It has a nice patio with televisions outside, which is pretty cool. It can get quite crowded on weekend nights but never feels unbearable. There's also an upstairs that is usually less crowded and allows you to people-watch from above, if you find that fun. Sometimes there is a cover on the weekend, which I find to be slightly annoying but not enough to deter me from visiting. It is usually only $3 and they seem to only charge it when there is a band playing. The bands have always been decent and from a variety of music genres. Parking can be very difficult as their lot is basically non-existent. Sometimes I won't go there if the weather is bad because I don't want to walk that far. How does this place not have more reviews!?! I love it! My Minnesota girl and I came here last night for some Vikings action and beer/food. The Vikings lost unfortunately, but really, Brett just isn't himself this year. Probably b/c he's old. Even with Randy Moss. And ever since Jared Allen cut off his mullet ... ANYWAY, right, the bar. Despite the disappointing game, I love love LOVE that they have these great tv's outside! The weather was perfect and we enjoyed a couple of beers and some food from next door. The food was nothing-fancy bar food - I had the chicken sandwich and she had the cheeseburger. The fries were pretty good. I gobbled that up like whoa. But what totally makes this bar is those tv's outside! I don't know why I'm so obsessed with it but sitting outside and watching tv makes me incredibly happy! This place is a perfectly fine dive. They had Bells Oberon on tap so I was happy. We used this place for a celebration with a big group. We were able to take the entire loft which was really cool. They also provided a server that was solely in charge of taking care of us which was helpful especially because I don't think some of the older group members would have been comfortable running up and down the stairs. Since this place allegedly does not serve food, we were allowed to bring our own. I LOVE when you're allowed to do this at places. My only beef-- the server didn't know/couldn't remember the happy hour special. I was drinking beer and it turned out happy hour was a dollar off drafts. I really enjoyed coming here. I went with some friends to see a band and have some drinks. It's a basic basic bar with standard stuff. I had a tequila on the rocks and several G&T's. I asked the bar tender for some suggestions and all I got was tequila on the rocks so not the place to go if you are in the mood for cocktails. But, if you want a basic bar with a fun atmosphere this is your spot. It was very lively with lots of people, late 20's early 30's crowed but not what I would call "young professional" more of a young blue collar joint, which I like! They have some games upstairs (darts and maybe something else), live music a few nights a week and I did notice they have drink specials and a trivia night. I'd like to check out the trivia night! We had a waitress when we were upstairs and she was pretty darn good considering it was packed with young drunk people. She was really friendly and seemed like she was having fun which says a lot about a place. They have free popcorn too but I don't like popcorn so I didn't try it. This is such a great place to go to grab a few drinks with friends. What you see in this bar is exactly what you get. A small great bar & a great outdoor area, and that's pretty much it. There is nothing super special about RP's, they just stay true to the basics of what makes a good bar: good liquor selection, good beer selection and good staff. I don't have the best review for this place, as I came here after midnight to have a few beers with a coworker while we complained about our other coworkers. It served as a good venue for this, but then again any bar would work for that. I stuck to the front bar, actually, I mostly stuck to my barstool, but once I got up and went to the restroom, I realized the bar was a lot bigger than I initially believed. I feel like once you found the good nights to go here, this place would be cool. The crowd that I saw was interesting; there was a couple of people you'd expect to see in a dive bar and then there were a couple of upper-class looking Hyde Park girls. Not sure if this is typical, but it was an interesting combination. I'd have to go on a busier night to get a complete impression, but that was a dead night for you. read more

RP's McMurphy's is also home to, what is probably, the most popular happy hour in ALL of Cincinnati -- "Mug Club" (or "Mug Night")...a Wednesday-only special where patrons can buy, and bring back weekly, a little colored mug for $2 or $3 refills on any of their beers. For some reason, this promo along attracts a lot of people. On summer nights for this particular happy hour -- the bar can be 'at capacity' by 9pm. The average age demographic is usually 21-31 on Wednesdays, and skews slightly older (23-35) on weekends. Regardless of age, it is undoubtedly a great place to gather with friends in the Hyde Park area, regardless of your 'taste' in bars. read more

Funny story. I actually went here for the first time a few years ago hoping to chow down on a delicious Irish lunch. But, upon asking for their menu, I quickly found out they actually don't serve food. Like, they don't even have a kitchen. Whoops. But, even that setback hasn't kept me from returning to this Hyde Park staple. Obviously, the main draw is Mug Club on Wednesdays -- $5 for a mug (and fill), and $2 domestic and $3 premium draft refills after that. There's also unlimited popcorn, which almost makes up for the fact there's no kitchen. I recommend the outdoor patio -- especially if you have a pup you'd like to bring along (but consider yourself warned because they kick dogs out a 9 o'clock). There are plenty of tables, TVs and heaters (for those chilly fall months) outside. Ran into this bar with about 5 minutes till midnight on NYE to watch the ball drop. They asked to see my boyfriends ID which was confusing because they did not ask to see my ID or anyone else's. They pointed out that his ID was 3 days expired from his 25th birthday. He said we don't have to drink we just wanted to see the ball drop. The bartender comes over AGAIN and says he has to wait outside in the cold since he has an expired ID. She was incredibly rude and started getting in his face saying they will physically remove him if he didn't leave. It was clear that they were just trying to humiliate him for absolutely no reason. Let me just point out he is the ONLY person of color in this entire bar and they singled him out despite being clearly of age. Other people around us were saying they were not asked to show ID either. We live in Hyde Park and I am just disgusted that a local bar that is so highly reviewed would treat a guest like a criminal over a recently expired ID. read more
