I love this place. There are closer options for me, but it's worth a few more minutes in the car for the experience that I get. This location seems well-staffed--help is always immediate or available after a short wait. Services I've used: -Keys copied -Paint (this is a Benjamin Moore location and you can use Ace Rewards on it) -General hardware -Garden (bags of mulch; I think they also have bagged topsoil, fertilizer, etc but it's definitely a smaller selection considering this location's compact footprint) Checkout is generally really quick--in my experience there has occasionally been 4-5 in line, but with three open registers and lots of staff on hand they move people through efficiently. Hours could be a little better, but who REALLY wants to be doing projects after 5p on a Saturday anyway? (just a warning because I forgot to check the store hours when I first started going here) Parking lot is small and can be challenging at peak hours (you can only park on the left side of the lot; there is also ample street parking but once you pull into the lot you're in puzzle piece hell). But what can they really do about it? Just take a breath and let grandma back her Toyota Sienna out at a glacial pace and you'll be in front of a friendly face in no time. read more

I can't say exactly how many times I've shopped here in my life but its been about 8-10 times in the last eight years. I am fairly certain that i also used to come here with my dad many, many years ago, so I have significant experience with them. If I lived closer, it would be a lot more often! I've shopped at The Home Depot and Lowes countless times and I can honestly attest to these facts about Shattuck as compared to them: their helpfulness is unmatched, they are always friendly, they are professional and knowledgeable and their prices rarely are much more than either of the big box stores (frequently the same or better) and are nearly always cheaper on most items than is Tags in Porter Square. They have a somewhat small parking lot, but only once did I have to wait a brief time to get a spot. If necessary, you can always park on Massachusetts Ave and take a short walk back. In short, they are a true neighborhood hardware store with the knowledge, expertise and friendliness to go with it. And they have a larger selection than you might think from just a look from the outside. read more

Excellent local hardware store. The selection is significantly brighter and deeper than most neighborhood hardware stores probably because they have more than one location and have that buying power. The staff know the products pretty well also. It's always neat and clean and well arranged and well stocked. If you want something that they don't have they will spend the significant amount of time going through catalogs with you but that only happened once when I knew my granddaughter wouldn't like the color beach chair that they had. OK, it's getting to be a habit with me but here goes with my FOURTH review of Shattuck's--just can't help myself! Went in today to see if I could get a snow and ice shield for the windshield of my car. The section I was directed to didn't have one but the saleswoman behind the counter came over to look with me. Then George showed up, googled them, found that ACE did carry them but not in the store. As he went to the store computer site to look them up, the boss came along, showed George the steps to take to order one for me--only $10!--and, voila, next week I'll have one! Glad we're just getting rain tomorrow but I'll be all set when typical winter weather (is there such a thing anymore?) comes along. YAY Shattuck's! read more

Mark gave me the most outstanding service possible. A couple of nuts and bolts were loose on my roof rake, I've had to stop raking frequently to tighten them. But one nut and bolt disappeared into the snow last weekend - so i had to replace them and replace a rusty slightly broken butterfly screw as well. Mark not only found the right nuts and bolts, washers and screw, he put everything together to make sure they were all the right size. What a nice man! So knowledgeable and helpful. Reasonable neighborhood hardware store. Pretty standard Ace gear --- same brands I see at other Ace places --- but distinctly low-ceilinged. No craning your neck for the aisle labels, it feels more like a maze than a warehouse (though it's still laid out sanely.) Came here needing some space heaters, found a selection, found a few that would work at decent prices; not much more to worry about on this trip. Maybe next time I'll have a trickier problem to solve... read more

This is a quality hardware store. It is literally stocked with everything one would want from a hardware store but the store size is manageable and laid out in a convenient manner. One issue with this store is that it has a tight parking area. This though is no fault of the store's as a medical building was built adjacent to the store about 10 years ago. This medical facility has several spots reserved for their clients only. This makes for a somewhat tight parking situation at times. One other issue/complaint deals directly with the hardware store itself. I feel that some of the older male employees there are kind of mercurial and sometimes come across like they don't want you bothering them. These guys are the backbone of the store as they know a lot but they can be a bit unapproachable. The girls who work the registers are very nice and professional. read more

Awesome selection, amazingly helpful staff (though sometimes hard to find), head and shoulders above the big box stores in both. I also thought the prices were fair. Shattuck & Co. copied a key for me that Lowe's couldn't even do (the Lowe's guy said I would have to go to a locksmith to get a copy made!); Shattuck & Co. helped me find the perfect, matching stain for my project on the first try; employees were helpful and gracious about returns; the price of replacement bulb for my microwave was 25% lower here than it was at Lowe's! I wish I lived closer. It's got the perfect small-town hardware store atmosphere and a great variety of items. Just walking the aisles, I found all kinds of hardware store treasures! read more

I returned the last two items I bought-One a tool that was Chinese junk and, thinking it was still at the "old" Shattucks, didn't even bother to check it out till I got home and another item that broke soon after purchase. Over the past several years I have seen many changes, none of them good. 2 stars for the couple of old time guys who give invaluable advice. And parking is a horror show. Shattuck is still almost an old-fashioned hardware store (half of it is). It has made a bit of a transition to a more modern one recently, yet a lot of their hardware is available as individual purchases, which is quite valuable to me compared to, say, Home Depot where you can only buy the quantities THEY want to sell you. You can also examine the hardware before you buy, also very valuable to me - does it fit? - before I buy. Aside from being a good old-fashioned hardware store, they have a good supply of indoor and outdoor household goods, including grill supplies. I prefer to give them my business than the big box stores, and doing comparison pricing, it isn't always that different. A kettle for boiling water we just bought was actually lower than on Amazon, and with their $5 coupon, considerably less - and with no shipping charges, of course. One reviewer here complained that they are surly and would not help him; he needs help because he has a serious knee problem. I have seen them give help cheerfully to every person who asks; indeed, I have offered help myself (I don't work there). One has to wonder: if he looks like he can handle it, but happens to have a bad knee, did he think of asking for help? Because I wouldn't think to offer if the person does not look like they need it, and perhaps they would not either. As for "surly", I find that surly is as surly does. Wearing a smile and a friendly attitude is rarely returned by a surly attitude or scorn ANYWHERE I go. Just sayin'. Shattucks is one of the friendliest places in town - like all the places I go, but maybe that's just me. read more

RW Shattuck (aka ACE) was the first hardware store we visited in town, and the place we always return to. They fit a surprising amount of stuff in a small space, but you never feel crowded or lost, and they always seem to have exactly what you're looking for. The only reason I'm giving the place 4 stars as opposed to 5 is that occasionally certain members of the staff can be surly; I had one very negative experience with an unhelpful and cranky worker that I won't go into here. If you live in town, don't drive out to the big guys -- Shattuck has everything you need at reasonable prices. read more

It's a shame that the service at this store is so hit and miss, because the selection is decent. Having shopped there probably 10 times, I am sorry to report that some of the staff are just rude and unhelpful. I see plenty of other reviews noting that some of the staff members are "surly" and other such charming things. Really, hardware store are not supposed to be run by unhelpful jerks. Today I was in the store, and wanted to buy something sizable which they were stocking outside. I have a serious knee problem. I told the clerk I wanted to buy it, explained that I had a knee issue and that's why I didn't lug it back inside, and he MADE ME WALK OUT AND GET THE ITEM AND CARRY IT BACK TO HIS LAZY SELF. Are you kidding me? And he was short and snappy about it. Amazingly, the other guy behind the counter thought it was funny. Yeah, so hilarious buddy. I own a handyman and carpentry and home improvement business in Arlington so I often come here and find it a perfectly nice neighborhood hardware store that almost always has what I need. The people are friendly and helpful. Good selection in plumbing and electrical and pretty much everything else. I have received help finding odd plumbing fittings and other things that I need, the Shattuck employee sometimes spending quite a bit of time with me. Some reviewers have complained of surly or unfriendly or unhelpful attitudes here, but I have never experienced that in the last 15 years. Ever. read more

Needed spackling stuff. Came here. They have a parking lot, which is a plus. It is a less crazy parking lot than the one at the hardware store in Porter. Got spackle. I asked my husband if coming here made him feel manly, and he said that it did. They have a lot of random things that you might think you would never need. Prices seemed reasonable. read more

This is a tale of two stores. The one in front is a garden-variety hardware store - BBQ grills, lightbulbs, mops, paint, etc. The one in back used to be closed off to the general public, almost wholesale, you had to ask for what you wanted at a counter. But now it's wide open in back and there is a very very good selection of real hardware - every fastener of every size under the sun, obscure plumbing parts, all kinds of widgets and gadgets. Unfortunately they haven't told the people in back it's all one store now. You get the feeling if you don;t already know you want an 8-32 torx-head brass reverse thread screw, they don't have any patience. Bit of a strange place, but they probably have what you need, as long as you know what it is.. read more

I've been there exactly twice, so take that into account when you read this. The first time, I was there in the middle of the day. The staff was friendly enough and helped me to find what I needed. Prices are a little on the high side (compared to comparable products at, say, a drug store, e.g., cleaning sprays), but that's typical for a hardware store. The second time was this evening. I arrived about five minutes before closing time (= 6:00pm). There were three employees still there, but the guy (owner?) couldn't get me out fast enough! It was like he needed me to leave before he could make a badly needed trip to the bathroom. I got one of the items I needed (the other was getting them to trim something I'd bought the previous time--they didn't have time for that). Btw my register receipt is stamped "5:57pm." I like buying local when I can, but the lesson I draw from my experience with Shattuck is that they're helpful enough to have what you need, but not friendly enough to inspire loyalty. Another note: both times they mischarged me for my purchases, but readily corrected the mistakes when I pointed them out: be sure to watch the register when you're checking out. read more

I don't know about you but I do get somewhat intimidated at hardware stores because I usually come there not knowing what exactly what I need. DO NOT go here to have copies of your keys made!!! I went by with the master keys to make a copy for a pet sitter and when I went home with them, my MASTER keys and the copies did NOT work! I had to call my fiancé who then had to leave work to unlock me from the house. I was locked out for a half hour. Later the same day, I took my fiancés keys to a locksmith and they made a copy with no problems. My fiancée notes he had also previously brought his car key in to make a copy and the copy did not Work either. Go somewhere else for your keys. read more

Absolutely amazing customer service! Home Depot gave us the run around for over 5 weeks of rescheduling a grill delivery, countless hours on hold with customer service, & eventually receiving the wrong grill. We had called Ace about purchasing a fully assembled grill with them, fully knowing it could take us another 4 weeks to receive the grill. We were pleasantly surprised when we were told we could have it by the weekend. To our shock, they delivered it the very next day and even gave us a quick run down on it. After spending a few years frequenting Home Depot and (to a lesser extent) Lowe's to get hardware supplies, I have found myself coming back full circle and hitting Shattuck's more often these days. It is everything a hardware store should be; dirty, dusty, and creaky, with folks behind the counter who have been there forever and know immediately what you need when asked. These types of hardware stores seem to be a dying breed, which is a shame, because they certainly serve a purpose, especially for people who don't want to drive a long distance to get a box of nails or an ice scraper. read more

Solid. Sometimes I have to find someone. Sometimes they find me. But almost always have what I need, Compression Fittings, PVC Piping, Hardware Cloth, Paint, need it, got it, and the one time they didn't they pointed me down the road to Arlington Plumbing Supply who had it. This is my local hardware store. I've been here or called here dozens of times. The staff knows where the goods are and take me to them. On the phone they pretty much answer on the first ring, then in 2 seconds go find out if what I want is in stock. They have everything. They have treats for my dog. If I don't understand something they can give a dissertation on why teak oil beats boiled linseed oil to weatherproof an adirondack chair. (Teak oil is more expensive but it soaks in better and won't feel sticky.) People griping about the staff or complaining that they wouldn't keep the store open past closing time just for them are not from this planet. If you're from Earth you'll be quite satisfied with Shattucks. read more

I initially wrote a very negative review based on a few years of bad service they have a new owner ( son of the previous owner) who sent me a nice note, I have been back a few times and found things are better. They have a great selection. The staff are friendly, accommodating, and able to point you in the right direction. I saw an item I wanted online from the ACE website. I brought a printout of the item to the store and Shattuck & Co. ordered it and assembled it for me for free. It was just a little patio set, but I probably would have punched myself in the neck at least once if I were assembling it myself. Shattuck & Co. would have even delivered it, but I was able to pick it up myself. I like this place so much I even bought their t-shirt. read more

I live in Arlington and have visited these guys for the last 14 years. They seem to always have the items you need and the ones you can't find at Home Depot or Lowe's. Sometimes not always they are a little more in price. I'd rather pay the little extra and keep the money in town with the local business, also if you figure the time and gas you spend to drive to Home Depot or Lowe's its well worth using the local shops. The employees are always great, and if it's not crazy busy they will spend even more time with you making sure you get what you need. This is your father's type of hardware store, it's old but it has it all, even on occasion the dog behind the counter, which is pretty cool! The negative comments I see posted I never have experienced here, but compare them with the big box stores and I'm sure these guys are still miles ahead with their customer service and available items. I needed to fix an old pocket door lock. I called and talked to a guy named Luke who told me to bring in the hardware and he would see what he could do. Well this guy went above and beyond for me. He cleaned out the old hardware and them proceeded to find / custom make me a key that would work for it. Seriously this is what a local hardware store should be like. Even though it's out of the way for me, I will probably think of coming here first. Really happy to give this store my business. read more
