I tried to return a couple of items (home improvement related, sold year-round ) valued at under $15 for store credit so I could buy something else that day. " No exchanges without a receipt" Well I scanned my Ace mobile app and I can show you the receipt on the Ace mobile app as well as the credit card I used. " We need the paper receipt" Great! I appreciate the excellent customer service here. I'll make sure to shop at Home Depot and Lowe's that offer 90 day returns as long as you have the credit card and they'll even give you store credit if you lose both the receipt and the credit card.. read more

They have everything, including propane refills. No, I'm not going to buy a $300 power tool here, but for nuts, bolts, fasteners, oddball hardware, they always have it, and it's easy to find, and/or there is someone to help you. SO much better than going to Home Depot. And for propane refills, all I have to do is open the rear hatch of my car and they do the rest. read more

I've been here on a handful of times. The selection is good, although a little disorganized. Prices are slightly higher than any larger HD or Lowes, usually about a 1.5x mark up. Why the low score? Normally I'd rate about a 4, but the last visit, and I mean last, was not pleasant. There was a man who I haven't seen before, who I assume is the manager based on how he said "my" for everything. I asked for some metal bars, which he kindly told me they were in the back. Then he said they could cut it for me, which sounded great so I agreed. He didn't state a price until I went to pay for it, and then he stated a couple dollars. I asked why he hadn't said "2 cuts for 2 dollars" before when he offered. It is a store after all. But no problem here, simple miscommunication. I told him that next time he should state it with the price. Then he rudely told me that "I'm happy, you can leave now" and continued to shoo me out of the store like dirt. That's enough for me not to return, if management is like that. I brought in a window for repair over two weeks ago and was assured it would be ready within the week. . I called this past Monday to check on its status and was told the glass guy was fired but that they sent it out to a contractor. I was assured it would be ready Tuesday. I went in Tuesday and was told by (who I assume was) the manager that the glass guy was just on vacation and that they had misplaced my window but once it was found (most likely on Monday when I called asking for it), they sent it out at great expense to them. Again, I was assured it would be ready the next day. Once the repair of the window was finally completed I found that the area between the two panes was not cleared of broken glass and that the window was smeared with sealant. The sealant was removed relatively easily, but the shards of broken glass couldn't be cleared without disassembling the window, which I was not about to let them do. Long story short: they're either incompetent, dishonest or an unattractive combination of the two. What I was told would be a quick, simple repair was done shoddily and took far longer than promised. read more

I absolutely love ACE hardware stores. They always make me feel like I'm in a small town where everyone is friendly and actually wants to help you find what you need. I also love that I don't have to walk 3/4 mile just to find the right aisle in hopes that they will have what I'm looking for.. Today, I stopped in to Model Hardware to see if I could find some electrical supplies to rewire a mid-century lamp. The man who usually works in that department was busy at the time, so the (cute) cashier helped me! He helped me find the right socket, cut some wire, and helped me find the right plug to put on the end. He even gave me some tips on how to do the project. I'd like to see a cashier at Home Depot do all that.. I will definitely be back! read more

If you have a car or dont mind a long walk, get your hardware needs satisfied elsewhere. Model is overpriced and a bit obnoxious. The salespeople, especially one man who appears to be a manager, are boisterous and loud without reason, often yelling conversations across the store to other salespeople. When the place is nearly empty, it's particularly annoying. They can be helpful but generally don't seem to regard customers well enough to make a helpful shopping environment. You quickly remember you're in Allston Village and they capitalize on the college kids who don't know better or are stuck with whatever places are within walking distance. Home Depot in Watertown is a bit cheaper, more professional and has significantly better selection, if you can make it there. read more

I went in 3 times to get keys cut. The keys the made did not work any time. They eventually decided to refund me because, "the keys were perfectly cut" and insinuated that I was lying about a $2 key. I needed a hammer. At first I checked the dollar store but they were closed. Moments before Model had been mentioned so I knew that must be the place to go. A walk down the street and around the corner and there I was. Inside was like walking back home. This isn't Home Depot but it's got enough stock to be a working person's hardware store (they are an ACE Hardware location). As for the hammer they had plenty of options. Most importantly they had some at varying price points and they had multiple options for the base models. The staff seemed a bit distracted when I went in but didn't seem impolite. I don't think they would be my first choice if I didn't know what I was looking for but locally they have the best selection of products that I have seen in a while. read more

I just moved back to Boston, into an apartment in Allston. One of the first projects I needed to tackle was to fix the bathroom door (large hole where the lock... was) and get some rolly shades for my windows. I went to Model Hardware and was immediately greeted by the guy who runs the place. He was nice, helpful, and has the store memorized so that I was able to write the aisle number next to each item on my list as soon as I came in the door! That saved so much time I would have spent looking at things I might (but do not, actually) need. He showed me how to measure for my rolly shades and sent me home with the brackets. I returned the next day with the measurements. Epic Battle Ensues: He cut them for me, neat as can be, and at $5 a pop they are a deal if having class isn't an issue. However, he cut them both exactly 1 inch too short. I went back and he cut them again, for free. This time they were about one eighth too big, and I realized that I am a tape measure moron somehow. So I took out my utility blade and fixed them. The people were kind and didn't roll their eyes, and they really had everything I needed at prices you'd pretty much expect. Overall a very pleasant and convenient store. read more

Came here to use a coupon. Kevin was checking me out when I asked about the total. He said he was charging $2 extra so that I could use the coupon. I asked him to clarify-- I'm being charged $2 for nothing? Then, at 10 a.m. in front of a long line of folks, Kevin raises his voice at me yelling, "You don't like it? Get out of my store! See if I care! I don't care if you're new here, I'll call the cops! Get out!" So I'm standing there in disbelief. I'm a 22 year old woman and I was in shock staring at him while he went on like this. I honestly wondered in the moment if it was because I'm Jewish that he'd kick me out for a price check, but we live in a turbulent political climate and I think I'm just touchy. But yeah, hands-down the worst human interaction I've had in a store, ever. I've never been treated like that-- it really shook me up and upset me for the rest of my day. I've worked in several retail positions in and out of Boston and I always try to an easygoing customer, so this just felt incredibly hostile and random. This place is OK. The prices aren't bad and I appreciate how they carry stuff that other hardware stores such as Home Depot or Lowes don't carry. The hand tools look like they've been sitting around untouched since the 80s though, and the thick coating of dust makes you wonder if they've ever sold any at all. read more

I really like that they offer sample pints of any paint color you want for only $6-7. Most hardware places outside of the Home Depot don't really do that for you. I got my paint so I was pretty happy, but sadly none of the employees really know what they are talking about. We should have gone to the Home Depot because we aren't experienced painters and really could have used that extra tip about how some paints dont work as well with some surfaces. Nobody told us that here, even though I asked if it was necessary for top coats and finishing paints and base coats, etc. They just didn't know.... Not the friendliest bunch of people, they are really ok without your business and their attitude shows that, so I guess good for them that they are doing so will without having any good customer service skills. read more

I called last night after they closed. Blizzard of the century and, like a moron, I had not bought a decent shovel. Kevin was still there, answered the phone, told me they were closed. I thought that would be the end of it. Then he asked me what I needed. I told him I needed a shovel and he said he could sell it to me if I paid cash, just call when I get there. I went right over, he came out, gave me the shovel. He did not gouge me either- and TBH I would have paid a lot for that shovel right then, but he charged me a fair price and was great about the whole thing. Definitely above and beyond! read more

I just sat on the phone on hold with these people for over ten minutes and I'm PRETTY sure it was out of spite because the guy didn't want to go price an item I was looking for (a shovel and neem oil for gardening). Literally saying "I don't know what that is so we probably don't have it" about the neem oil (which is a common natural insecticide for home gardening) and "you really should just come in" when I asked how much the cheapest shovel was. He also called me hon and it's like ? I don't know you? I don't like you? Don't call me pet names? I miss living near this place -- I never had to go to Home Depot as long as it was open. Don't let looks deceive you -- though the store appears small from the outside, it goes back far and has three levels. It was the most complete independent hardware store I've come across in Boston, and the staff was always knowledgeable and helpful. The man of the store didn't admit it was his problem and kept saying he is professional in duplicating keys. After getting money from your pocket, the store refuses to take any responsibilities. Came in here the other day with my roommates looking to weatherize our apartment. The second we walked into the store, someone was trying to help us. One of the ladies showed us to the weatherizing kits and then explained a few cheaper alternatives. She was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We ended up getting some drop clothes which do the same thing, and for half the price. The store is very messy, so not sure if I'd be able to find what I need without help, but the employees are great. I'll be returning for any more home improvement needs! read more

Not only do the staff greet you when they walk in the door, they ask if they can help. When you say no, they leave you alone. When you say yes, you will get the friendly, knowledgeable help you need. Do not be afraid to ask for help or advice on your project. Their advice has saved us so much time and money on any number of projects, from painting to lighting to carpet - and they don't even sell carpet. Stop in when they open on a Saturday morning and you'll find the place is hopping with contractors, renters, home owners, and locals, all of whom have a smile on their face - even the customers are friendly to each other, this is how great this place is. Solid hardware store. The employees are almost pathologically friendly, and as I dislike chatting, that loses them a star. I went to this place pretty much daily when removing wallpaper and painting my house, and every damn time they wanted a friendly chat about the weather or something. I was tired and grumpy and just wanted to get on with it. But anyway, they have most of what you're looking for, though never any damn boot trays to keep my floor clean in winter. Every time I come here the staff helps me find the 12 cent nut or 25 cent bolt I need. I wish I needed to make larger purchases so I could give them more business. Today they helped my mother find the right silver polish. I should have reviewed this store a long time ago, they are SO HELPFUL. I've been going to Model Hardware for a while, and with my most recent experience, I felt I had to share. I have always thought Model was a solid hardware store. Well-stocked, well-lit, and surprisingly large. What makes me a fan of Model, however, is their excellent customer service from Steven, their best paint-guy. Steven is a total paint maven. He spends a great deal of time with you talking about your paint project, even though he's got tons of stuff to do, he wants to help. He just wants you to get it right. I am a total amateur when it comes to painting, and recently when I went to get paint matched (and was totally clueless what I was doing) he spent the time to teach me how to pick the right paint and finish. This guy is just plain good. I now call ahead just to be sure he's there before I go to Model. He's that solid. Plus, tons of parking, and they have a Zipcar Toyota Tacoma in their parking lot if you need to use a truck to move some large stuff. read more

I just moved into an apartment literally one block away from this store. I called in beforehand to ask if they had dish-drying racks, because it's college season and everyone I went was sold out. The man on the phone said he had some, so I skipped the less-than-one-minute walk over. When I went in, they were out of stock, and when they asked the man on the phone if there were any in the back, he apologized profusely because he truly thought they were still in stock (again it was peak college-move-in season, I was surprised if they did have them). The man turned out to be the owner! He was SO incredibly nice, apologetic, and went above and beyond what I expected. I told him it was no big deal, I live so close that it wasn't any matter, but he told me that he would order racks immediately, and that I should come in on Monday (this was a Friday, so just two days in between!). He even asked what size I needed, which was really really nice. THEN, he even offered me a discount on the racks--which, as a struggling grad student was really, really appreciated.
