Highly unprofessional. Once I went in for bathroom paint and did not give me correct bathroom paint. Once asked for furniture paint and gave me paint that was outdoor paint and that it would work well. Used the paint and it was clearly not meant for furniture. Today went in for paint and every time I buy paint there it was $31-$35 however without telling me before mixing the paint the cost was $51. I told then I don't think I can afford this I thought it's $30 here. He rudely responded "well it's yours now." My dad went back to complain and his response "well he didn't ask" when why he did not tell me the price of the paint before mixing it. read more

After calling around the greater Boston area, I found Modern Hardware had the lowest prices for Benjamin Moore Regal Select Paint. They also have a great selection of paint supplies (lots of Wooster), and the staff was really friendly and helpful. read more

When we moved to the neighborhood, we stopped in as we were doing some small things around the house. They were so nice and helpful and even gave me a small discount to welcome me to the neighborhood! This is a great hardware store, and I am a devotee' of hardware stores! My daughter, who lives in Medford, and I (coming from out of the area to help on occasion) love this store. My daughter tends to live in old houses that constantly need help and repair. All the staff bends over backwards to help us even if the solution is a only 20 cent washer! My husband went in for some sandpaper, and when I checked the bank account a few days later, I noticed a $240 charge. I called Modern to explain that it should have been a $24 charge, and the owner not only admitted his mistake and fixed it, he also remembered my husband and exactly what he'd bought. I've been a customer for decades. This is one of those rare places where there are very knowledgeable staffers who won't sell you what you don't need or sell you the wrong item for your project. If you have no clue as to what you need or how to do it, they will give you good advice. On more than one occasion, they have steered me away from a purchase and directed me to a less expensive alternative. This is the only place I buy paint and painting supplies. Ideal local hardware store, great customer service and expertise, doing business as it's always been. They've always had whatever random items I've asked for, in stock - even a hard to find old key. Prices are very competitive. Had a key made, found an electrical adapter, got a tool question answered, and had paid for it all within 8 minutes of entering the door. This neighborhood hardware store has a great selection of Benjamin Moore paints, and the employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. We visited them for advice about what to do about our bare lawn and got some great tips. I always prefer to go here rather than Home Depot if possible; 1) because I like to support local businesses and 2) I can walk there, saving myself the death-defying drive over to the Gateway Center. read more

This is a great painting supply shop and hardware store with great staff. I go there frequently to buy Benjamin Moore products and always get quick and friendly service. It is a place where it pays to be a loyal customer, as the owner is very kind about giving you discounts on paint samples when you buy an armful. He once gave me a discount on a replacement gallon of paint when I mistakenly ordered the wrong color (completely my mistake). I highly recommend doing business here! read more

I had a last minute, end of the day need for one more can of paint. The store in Somerville that carries Benj. Moore, and has lousy customer service and never seems to be open, failed me, and I found myself driving and calling Modern Hwr and flying down the road at 5 minutes before they closed. I agree with all the others that this place is exactly what you want in a local hardware store. The customer service is superior and Benjamin Moore paints are the best. Whether you're dealing with the owner directly, or any of his employees, each and every one of them treats you with the utmost respect and will do anything for you. I love supporting the locals when I can, but often times more than not local shop prices are through the roof. Modern's prices are fair, they're right down the streat, and the employees are so helpful that I'd rather go there than any place else. This place is by far the best business for home improvement i have worked with. They are always super helpful- once when I was desperate to find the right color yellow from my living room, but forbidden to buy any more samples, they suggested the perfect color, gave me a gallon, and told me to come back to pay for it if it was the right shade. Since then I don't buy paint or basic supplies anywhere else. You won't find more knowledgeable staff and they are great too at suggesting good local professionals for the jobs you need. I have never been in this store that I didn't receive help and advice on various projects. The wallpaper selection is great with the added bonus of someone there to ask opinions. I have been using this store for years and have always been able to find everything I am looking for. The staff is very personable and I have never felt less important than the many contractors who frequently are there. This is my favorite hardware store in Boston. They don't have quite the selection of Tags, but they stock higher quality stuff, especially tools. They have a massive stock of random things, and I'm still not quite sure where they keep it all. That room under the stairs is amazing. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Some of the staff are clearly high school kids who don't know everything, but there is always someone who can answer my question. They will order you anything you need, and the bulk of their business does seem to be contractors, but I have never felt neglected or less important. Service is brilliant, prices are good, selection is quality and good. This is the sort of store I expect in a midwest farm town, and I was blown away to find it next to my house. read more

I had to get paint to touch up my living room after some work was done. The problem is that it had been painted by a previous owner and I had no idea how to match the color exactly. They let me borrow a hand-held tool for free that I took home and it told me the exact color my living room was (Lilly White, it turns out). I came back and they made me up a pint to purchase. When I used it, it matched perfectly. I had taken cell phone pictures and had been trying to match that way. I am SO glad I used their tool instead. I had thought my room was light blue. have stopped in here multiple times for keys, paint brushes, random small items. but today I went in there with the idea of trying to repurpose an old bookcase into some kind on shelving unit. the gentleman that helped me took the time to give me a few ideas and also the time to listen to my ideas and come up with a cheaper solution to achieve the plan in my head. the project is only halfway there but I feel like its going to work just fine. on the way out he was also nice enough to say hey send us a picture when you finish it. never heard anything like that at home depot. read more

I've been going here with my family since I was a little kid. The owners, George and David, are no-BS, sell at a good price, and are very knowledgeable about their products. I am pretty hardware-challenged, and the staff there have always taken their time to help me with my projects. Yet, their bread-and-butter seems to be hard-core construction and painting guys who trust their integrity. I will love this place even more when the remodeling is done!
