Rachel's Salon is the best place in Memphis to get a hair cut. Period. I've never been the kind of person who regularly goes to the same salon, and I've definitely never been the kind of person who uses the same stylist. That all changed when I stated going to Rachel's a few years ago. It's an incredibly warm and inviting place. The staff is really talented and extremely friendly (they'll offer you tea, wine, or something harder when you walk in the door). I'm an adult man. Before I started going to Rachel's, I use to think that my hair would never look good immediately after a cut. No more. I look great every time I leave, and weirdly look forward to coming back. Just moved to Memphis from San Diego and I received the same level of service that I expected from salons in Cali. I had long hair and wanted strictly a trim for dead ends and to add a few minimal layers, since I wear my hair up at work. Shelby quickly understood what I was looking for and gave me a relaxing, professional shampoo, brisk head massage, hair trim, and dried and styled it. She stayed just the right amount of friendly chatty through the whole process and also let me relax. She was very knowledgeable of the Aveda products used and for sale and recommended a smoothing serum that is a must have in this humidity. I was very pleased with the way my hair looked afterwards and it still looks long, but refreshed, and goes up for work no problemo. Prices were very reasonable. Would not recommend Rachel's Salon & Day Spa for men's haircuts. Honestly, one of the worst haircuts I have received. I do a fairly straight-forward side part hair cut with a fade on the sides. Mallory discovered half way through the haircut that she didn't know how to do a fade and had to ask for some help. Needless to say, it didn't end well. She also forgot to clean up the hairline on the back. I'm disappointed to have gotten such a bad haircut. I would have asked her to fix it but I didn't have confidence that she could do a better job. read more

Jessica is the best! I shopped around for a stylist downtown for years until I found her. I like to try new fun things with my hair, and she is more than happy to help, while also being honest and making sure to draw the line so I don't do anything that will damage my hair or not look right on me. Some of the comments suggest that the place is dirty, and those people should just return their suburb palaces. The building is older being in the middle of downtown, but this adds to the experience. There is nothing dirty about this business, and it has an excellent view of Main Street making for great people watching. read more

I was in town for a wedding and walked in to Rachel's for an updo. They fit me that afternoon. I am conflicted about this one. The hairdo came out cute and the hairstylist was friendly. BUT The place is a total dump and pretty grungy everywhere except the main entrance. It did not feel very clean and no one bothered to sweep up the hair before I was seated in the stylist's chair. The stylist handed me a bag of rollers and told me to pick out the largest ones. The rollers didn't look clean and in fact had other customer's hair on them. Not only did she put me to work, but it was pretty gross. The whole place was a mess and rundown. In need of a major deep cleaning/facelift. Liza spent a long time on my hair and had no problem making it shorter when I realized I didn't ask for it to be as short as I wanted. I had a great experience here. I just flew into Memphis on business and Jessica took me in last minute. She did a great job dying my hair and It was fun getting to know her. It is a shame they do not get more business. The location seems prime, but they definitely need a facelift and some good marketing. I only didnt give it 5 stars because it was a little pricey for the salon. Jessica deserves to charge this rate but the salon needs to match her skill. I did not get a cut so I cant comment on that. Im also not sure about the other stylists, so Id say try Jessica first. Also, this salon did not come up when I searched for hair salons downtown on yelp! Love this salon! They are extremely friendly and my stylist (Shelby) gave me exactly what I asked for. I even made an appointment pretty late in the day and was the only customer there yet I did not feel like they rushed my haircut to get me out quicker. I've had very bad experiences at other salons where they say they understand what i want and end up giving me something completely different but I felt like my stylist here really listened to me. Edit***** The owner reached out to me and we got everything straightened out. She very quickly got me in with Teri, who was amazing and worked her magic on me. The whole experience after speaking with the owner was fantastic so I have changed my rating! I have been going to an aveda salon for year. I am fairly new to the area and had my formula from my old salon in hand. I made an appt at Rachel's for a full foil. Remember, I had my formula. I gave it to the lady and she mixed it up and starts foiling my hair. I have very thick hair so I know the process can take some time. The lady doing my hair says I have fine hair, just alot of it. I said hmmm I've never been told my hair is fine. That should've been clue 1 this was gonna be bad. She "finished" up with my foils, which I knew she didn't do a full foil because the underside of my hair wasn't touched. I asked her about it and she said that part doesn't need done. Clue #2. She keeps checking on my hair and says ok let's go tone your hair. We go and I can see her messing with one part of my hair. Then she offers a hand massage, which I acc ept. While she is giving me a hand massage, I feel someone else messing with my hair. Clue #3. I know something bad has happened, but not been told anything so I'm hoping they're fixing whatever is going on. She finished toning then takes me back to my chair. I look at my hair and it's horrible. Mind you I came in with bright blonde hair and of course roots since I haven't been to a salon since moving here. My hair is BRASSY all over and patchy. I must be had a horrified look on my face because the lady says let's do a rough dry. She does and it's terrible. She goes get someone else to look at it. STILL not addressing anything to me. Someone else comes over and they talk and say they're gonna fix it. I say good. The original lady doing my hair had another appt so this other lady takes over. She starts going and I ask her what had happened and she says the foil bleed. So she is now foiling away and when she's done, he tones it and when I get back to the chair and look, I'm beyond angry. I was almost in tears at this point. My hair is brown with blonde showing underneath. I say this is darker than what I came in with. At this point I really had no words. She says we can fix it and I said no. I'd arrived for my appt at 10 and it was now 4. I said I can't be here any longer. I get up to the register to talk about this and saw my paper. They were going to charge me for a full foil. I said I need this corrected but I can't come in for x amount of days. I was flying out for a family function. She said no charge today you can pay when you get it fixed. I left and then immediately got tears in my eyes. Yes, I know it's only hair, but I have spent so much time and money getting it to the blonde color that I was and in one fell swoop it was ruined. I have since been to another salon twice to fix it and am still not to where I was. I would NOT recommend this salon for anyone that is blonde. I'm literally paying for this mistake that wasn't my fault and still not to where I even was going in there. read more

Came back, got Balayage highlights done & the first round didn't lift as much as it should have on the top portion of my hair, as that portion was virgin hair(no previous color). I said something about it, and the stylist totally had no problem going through a second time and putting more in where needed. This salon WANTS your business and for you to leave happy every time. I certainly wouldn't give this day spa a terrible, but it's far from professional. I have had the opportunity to visit many spas which includes massages, facials, mani's and pedi's and this one ranks near the bottom, unfortunately. Their equipment is "makeshift" at best. My daughter and I bought a package there for a massage, manicure and pedicure. Long story short: The manicurist was supposed to finish my manicure after my massage and when I went to her station for my nail polish, etc., after about 15 minutes of waiting, it was brought to my attention that she had left for the day. The "owner" (who never introduced herself as such) didn't charge us, but that was ridiculous! And instead of a pedicure chair, you are asked to sit in a "massage chair" and place your feet in a plastic dishwasher tub. No kidding!! You won't get your bang for your buck at this salon/spa!! read more

Called in advance to book a "back to school" treat for me and my 2 High-School girls. We are new to the area and I probably won't come back to Rachel's. We were a pre booked party of 3, each getting a 60 min massage, mani & pedi and eyebrow wax. I asked when making the appt about how long we should plan to be there and was told around 3 hours. We were there OVER 5 HOURS!! They had only 1 massage therapist and only 1 person working to do mani/pedis. Which meant we were sitting around waiting on each other to finish before the next person could go. The last 2 pedicures were so rushed I am not even sure we got what we paid for. I wanted this to be relaxing and fun but in the end it was super stressful. If it's more than just you coming I would not recommend this place. read more

I scheduled a hairstyle for a special event, asked if they had a 3 barrel curling/wave iron, was told when I scheduled the appointment that they had a 3 barrel curling iron, for a wavy look, but when I arrived and they didn't have one and the hairstylist insisted that she would make my hair wavy...NOT! She used an iron for curls..not waves and proceeded to put the iron too close to my scalp (several sore spots), knocked me in the head with it several times and pulled my hair and then told me there was no charge for the beating! Not to mention, totally disrespecting my request for a specific style but I didn't have time to make another appointment somewhere else because the event was in a few hours. 30 minutes after I leave, absolutely no curls, no evidence that I had my hair done, except for the overwhelming hairspray smell. Very disappointed in the lack of honesty about the 3 barrel curling iron because I know that style will go the distance because my stylist back home does my hair in this style and it lasts for several days...$50 later and you can't tell I did anything special with my hair for my special event...wish I was more assertive...I would have gotten up out of the chair and walked out! read more
