We went rafting on some class III and IV rapids today with raftmasters and it was a fantastic experience. It felt well organized and safe but also very fun and all I could hope for. John-o was our guide and he was great. He did a good job reteaching us the basics and knew the river quite well. Outside of that, he had some good geological knowledge and dad jokes as well. My buddy's wife couldn't come at the last second and they gave me a gift certificate which was cool as we thought he wouldn't get anything. The only thing I didn't love is there isn't anything to drink once you step on the bus so I would have brought some water but still highly recommend them. read more

Great time rafting the Gorge today! Great weather and river temp was CFM 1500. Our guide was Spencer and he was great! Since it was the wife and I we were paired with a family of four. That being said they ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT have brought there elderly parents on this river! Anyone that knows Colorado should know that The Gorge is one of the most difficult rivers to run. Thus, this old man lasted 20 min before he had to be literally tied into the middle of the boat along with his wife. This lead to only 4 of us paddling! Again, great time because how could you not on a beautiful day with the Gorge but keep old people that can't even barely walk nor paddle off the river! read more

We went with the half-day Big Born Sheep Canyon half-day (with Royal Gorge Bridge & Park combo). It was a great time for the whole group. The kids LOVED it! John-O was an incredible guide. Safety did seem important to these guys. I really can't say if they are better or worse than their competitors. One thing that was a little annoying was that the other companies seemed to have brought water for their customers, and I have never been on something like this that didn't have free water. I was super thirsty and there was nothing available to purchase once we got on the bus, so I am knocking down a star for that. read more

We went on a half day raft trip with our 10, 8, and 7 year old kids and had Spencer as our guide. It was wonderful. The staff here were awesome! All very knowledgeable and super nice. This was our first rafting experience and it was great! Because of the water levels being higher than usual, we had to switch from the Big Horn Sheep ride to the Family float. This was a little disappointing but for the safety of our 5 year old, we totally understood. We still enjoyed our float and it was perfect for families with small children or older folks. All of the staff is super friendly and took their time to politely and professionally answer all of our questions prior to our trip. It was great that the wet suite, boots, helmet, life jacket, and splash guard were all available for use at no additional cost. During our half day trip, Mark was our awesome raft guide. He was knowledgeable about rafting, safety, and the Arkansas River's history. We went after a pretty big storm so the water levels were higher than normal for late season, but we were assured that it would be a safe and fun experience, which it was! Parking, additional restrooms and changing rooms are available across the street from Raft Masters. Bring $0.75 to use the lockers where you can safely stow your car keys and other valuables. My wife booked the jeep tour and family float via the phone and forgot to ask for the military discount. We spent almost 600.00 on the trips. We asked when we arrived of they could adjust the price and were told no because the payment was already processed. Very disappointing and upsetting since processing a partial refund should be fairly easy and routine. Other than the above issue Ed our jeep driver and Nicole our raft guide were great. I was thinking the jeep tour would be hard core rock climbing or something but it was pretty tame. Very educational and we got to dive over the royal gorge bridge. I would have given 5 stars if there had not been the issue of the military discount. We own a business and we offer a large military discount. I have adjusted balances because I asked them if they were military after the purchase. I would never do that to a service member myself. read more

Wow! What a phenominal trip down the Royal Gorge! This place was inexpensive, well-organized, easy to find, didn't nickle 'n' dime you and was the longest half-day available down the Royal Gorge (5 hours). Why I love Raft Masters and will use them for all future white water rafting: 1) Just about all the companies in Canon City have the same price for a half-day WWR trip down Royal Gorge, but RM's is the longest of them all 2) Jeremy, our oh so hunky guide that was super nice and laid back and told us all kinds of history stuff about the gorge while also making sure we got to know the people in our raft and had a great time 3) They are organized! I can't tell you how many trips I have got on that are a complete cluster f**k. They are very clear on what you must bring (a swimsuit) and what they provide (wetsuit, river booties, helmet, splash jacket, etc.) 4) None of this "oh that's extra" crap! Some of the other companies wanted to charge extra for wetsuit & river booties rental. 5) Did I mention Jeremy, our super hot guide? Oh, and he was great about giving us a heads up as to how to stay in the boat on certain rapids and which way to swim to safety if we happened to fall out (none of us did). 6) We could actually find the place! Basically, drive to Canon City, drive down the main drag, they're across the street from the McDonalds. There was one place I considered that said you couldn't even use a GPS to find them because they were that out in the middle of nowhere. I planned my little July mini-getaway at 7pm the night before it was supposed to occur. Raft Masters is open to make reservations via phone until 9pm. The only negative thing about the whole experience was the ditzy little thing on the other end of the line trained to make reservations -- and apparently not answer basic procedural questions about the trip. Habla *spliff* much? Seemed like it... nevertheless, reservation was made and I tried to get myself into bed by 10am to wake up at 5. [edits out the rest of my narrative prose -- nutshell: slept 1 1/2 hrs, pounded energy drink, hit the road at 6am and once out of south Colo Spgs, sped 65-85 down down to Canon City to arrive at check-in time, 8:15am] I have to echo Mo C's review about these guys: I did some basic research and came up with 3 companies I was going to consider for rafting, Royal Gorge Rafting, River Rafters, and Raft Masters. Raft Masters was the only one who didn't charge extra for wetsuits, helmets, splash jackets and water booties. They also cruised in under the $100 mark for a full day's trip -- 22 miles and about 6 hrs-ish with lunch break -- which most of the prices seem to hover around for a full day on the Arkansas. My guide was a well-tanned part-Irish guy on his way to getting a masters in plumbing. And had guided people down the river for years. I don't recall his name sadly, but he's a solid guy: super nice and laid back and told us all kinds of history stuff about the gorge while making sure we got our share of whitewater and letting us do some fun things like surfing the sinkholes. Lunch was a great selection of cold cuts, cheese, condiments and various other things on fresh-baked rolls -- under a *really* impressive 2-peak covered tentlike structure that wasn't there the last time I went rafting like 5-6 years ago. Shaded people from the sun while they ate which was nice. My advice to any prospective rafters is that mid-late July is *too late to get into SERIOUS whitewater* - even if the mountains DID get a ton of snowfall this year. SO noted, I'll be diving back in late May/early June next year. Royal Gorge is supposed to be class 3-5's, but we didn't encounter anything above 1 or 2 "low" level 4 areas. D'oh. *smacks head* Next year...it'll be colder water, and a lot more surging. We had the entire lower part of the river to ourselves for the afternoon as everyone else apparently had chosen the half-day trips. Geez. They missed the best parts! It was a blast. They have a well-stocked tourist shop with various t-shirts, sunblock, sunglass secure straps as well as a big cash cow for the operation, their photography kiosk. $25 for 1 8x10, $40 for 2 8x10s, or $50 for a burned CD of about 24 shots at various points down the river. It's a staggering markup -- but I don't have a ton of good outside action shots of myself -- so I went in for the $50. Screw it. (I guess some of it went to the photographers themselves) So now I have some nice shots, some of which I will post here. A few miscellanea: 1) The booties when you get them may be wet. *They have been washed in soap solution* and are not dry. It doesn't mean someone just took them off and handed them over -- in fact, they make you rinse out your booties yourself. Not a problem here, keeps things friendly for the next person. 2) *Beware* Hwy 50, joining Hwy 115 to Canon City. There are stealth cruisers a *plenty* on that road. You have been warned. (yay, none got *me*...but 2 other poor bastards fed the PD's budget as I drove down)... 3) *WEAR SUNSCREEN* unless you're genetically blessed with a lot of melanin. Helmet covered my head, and I did my arms and face -- but forgot my leg quads. I had a nice scorched reminder of the day after I got back. *Really*, a seriously professional organization, be you trundling down class II-III's, or wanting to get seriously soaked in some IVs and if you're lucky, Vs. HIGHLY recommended. :D read more

Don't think you'll regret using Raft Masters We had a party of five with three first timers. Our guide was Andrew and he definitely made our trip down the Royal Gorge fun. Andrew had given us the rundown for safety & paddle instructions in detail. I don't believe I could have asked for a better experience for our party. When our crew walked laughing and already reliving the trip you know it was a success. Another tip was given on the bus afterwards by one of the guides & that was to try "Big Burger World"..... definitely worth trying if you are in the area. read more

Our family originally signed up for the family float, but when we got there our guide said with the ages of our kids (12, 12, 9) we could easily handle the Big Horn Sheep Canyon float. We're so glad we switched! We saw level II and III rapids. We got wet, we screamed, we laughed and we paddle high fived! There were two places you were allowed to jump into the river for a splash. My husband decided to jump in - but be prepared to either be able to get back into the raft on your own or be pulled in by someone in your raft. Our river guide, Katie, and river guide in-training, Grace, were knowledgeable and so great to raft with! We had a fantastic time!!! Loved loved the experience. We had Aaron as our guide and it believe he made the experience what it was. He was a great teacher, made it very fun and safety was key. The views thru the canon and gore where breathtaking. He had amazing knowledge of the area and the waters. We hit some big Rapids and was very scary for moments but you put your trust in the guide and it was worth every penny. We also purchased the pics ahead of time and for the first time I can say it was well worth it. If we get back to Colorado I will bring my 3 teenagers for the experience and will rent the go pro also. p.s boots, wet suits, helmets all included. read more

If you're taking a Jeep your id suggest somewhere else. This place was so ungodly unorganized when it came to jeepers. I felt like most of the attention was about the rafters and that we had no idea what or where to go cause they just kept screaming about the rafters. When you get there there's not even a sign to say where the jeepers check in! I sat in line for 10 minutes until we realized the Jeep tours were on the other side of the shop (which there was no signs or anyone screaming where to go) Otherwise the trip was very cool. The train ride was unreal. I suggest going on the car that is completely open and taking pictures or there. The Jeep tour was amazing. Our tour guy Ed was very informative and super cool. He def made this trip by far! I'd give five stars for ed but keeping it at three because of the unorganized facility. When we even went in after our trip all the staff hid in the back and no one greeted us or asked if we needed anything. We ended up not buying from the gift shop since all the staff ran back there when we came in and never came back out for us to pay for what we wanted. Just ask for Abel! He's the best. We reserved our rafting trip and got Abel as a guide. He is thoroughly entertaining and his knowledge of the river and area is excellent. You will not be disappointed with him. I'm sure the other guides are just as competent and know the river, but I can only speak of my experience. The trip took a few hours and the water was refreshing. You will be given instructions on the bus to the drop off so you will be educated on all the correct river etiquette in case of emergencies- one person did fall out of another boat in our group, but she was quickly saved and had no injuries. Rafts Masters the name says it all. Masters of rafting, masters of great guides, masters of hospitality. All tour guides are friendly, upbeat, energetic and knowledgeable of the river. I've raft with this company several times for about 6yrs and we really enjoy it. All rafters are able to get wetsuits (which i recommend), water boots if needed, water coat if needed. I recommend changing into wetsuit with only under garments to make it comfy. Everyone is required to wear safety helmet and life vest. The guides will securely fasten your PFD, don't unloosen, it's supposed to be that tight. You take about 20 minutes to bus up to the rafting area. Rafting through the Royal Gorge is the best, beautiful scenery carved out by the river and time. The rapids are fun and you have quite the ride. Make sure you listen to your guide, secure yourself feet into the edge of raft and enjoy. Fun for couples, family or solo. read more

We rafted Royal Gorge with this outfit in July. Because the water levels were lower than usual, we called ahead and asked if our 12-year-old son could raft the Gorge. So glad we asked! The employees were very honest and said we'd be bored silly doing Big Horn -- there were virtually no rapids at all. Even the Gorge was pretty slow and tame. Mark was our guide -- top notch! However, all the guides undergo strenuous training and you really can't go wrong with any of them. We talked to Mark at length during the trip. He was one of the nicest guys! He let our son "ride the bull" by sitting on the front of the raft. He deliberately docked the raft on a rock so my son would get drenched, which was a total highlight. The actual rafting was so much fun. Colin was my guide and he was not only knowledgeable and awesome regarding rafting but he had an awesome sense of humor and mixed in a lot of the history of the area. They lost a star because they were SO DISORGANIZED! What was on their website was different than what I (& several other people who were equally annoyed) was told. Not only that, but they just couldn't get their act together to get going. When we stopped for lunch, there were a couple groups that needed to be picked up and it literally took nearly an hour and 2 calls to finally get someone out there to get them. They were getting angrier and colder as the minutes ticked by. Just bad business. Also I bought the photo package and it clearly states you receive a zip drive for the photos, nope.
