I have used Raggs to pump my septic system, even though I had reservations after the company was found guilty of dumping septic waste into municipal waste water drains in the town of Concord (as a result, Raggs is no longer licensed to pump septic systems in Concord, MA). I always found the employees who came to perform the work friendly and helpful. My problem started when I hired them to do a Title V inspection in December. I was quoted approximately $350, excluding the cost of any digging or excavation that needed to be done. They had to bring in a backhoe to dig up a 2x3 ft. hole in the lawn next to the driveway in order to get to the D-box. I expected to pay for the cost of the backhoe, but was stunned when the bill arrived. The $350 quoted had ballooned to over $1,500. But that was not the real problem. My septic system received a provisional pass, as there was a hole in the d-box and it needed to be replace. The inspector said it would cost about $2,500 and I gave him the OK to proceed. He said they would schedule it for January. Over the next 6-8 weeks I called 4 times asking them when they would get round to doing the job. I was told someone would get back to me but they never did. At the end of February I got a formal quote in the mail and when I spoke to the person in charge (I believe it was Vicky Fish, the owner) I was lectured by her that she was the only person the could quote or schedule a job and seemed not to care that the company had been unresponsive up till that point. Don't, just don't. Had used them for 16 years to pump and never had an issue, so when we sold and needed a title V contacted them. Did not re-check current reviews (they are accurate). Said all the correct things. Bill jumped from standard $500 ish to $800 something and so it began. Additional digging... should have planned for machine and additional man... Folks this was standard stuff, no special anything was actually required! Returned with a machine to dig one 4'x4' hole to cover. Left invoice looking for additional $1800 claiming they pumped out the system, inspector fee, equipment operator fee. Machine left a hydraulic mess in the street I could see at night. Now silence on findings, calling to get info, nothing back... I knew this was BS and not willing to take the ride that I anticipated they were about to take me on. Took realtors recommendation for an alternative, this vendor was willing and did come on-site and perform Title V inspection for the standard fee. Provided findings and made correct repairs on time and budget. Back to Raggs/Comue - left messages, someone came during the day and cleaned up the street. They returned and attempted to access the property to continue something (who knows), told them to bounce until I get a call back to go along with the multiple messages telling them not to come onto the property until I am communicated with. Eventually got a call from the office (Blocked #) not a good sign. In addition to the $1800 she informed me it would be an addition $2600 to repair beyond that. Explained I considered the $800 a loss and if you wanted to pursue anything you could show me the manifest for the 2500 gallons you claim to have pumped! (Folks the system holds at most possible half of that and was not fully pumped) They took the choice I gave them, Steal the $800, disregard the additional $1800 in additional charges and go away. And no I was not interested in the additional $2500 in repairs they claimed it needed. First of all they are not in Concord. Haven't been for 10 years. Concord no longer approved them for septic given they were caught dumping illegally. They did Title V for client, took about 3 weeks to get report. All parties kept calling to get date of expected receipt but they would never return calls. They hid behind answering service. Finally got the report on the last possible day before we had to cancel real estate transaction. If they had just returned a call, any one of the many messages left I would not post this. At the end i giving the report to the client, the owner of the company told the client they could now call off the dogs. That's great service. These guys were great, professional came on time, did a good job. I was really happy with the job done and would have recommended them to all my friends and neighbors. But while I was in middle of this I happen to talk to Stacey and hence I gave them one star. So let me back track a little , the guy who cleaned my septic was great I asked him if I can give him money at that time and he said no you will get a bill and you can pay thereafter. I got the bill and called in to pay the bill no one answered and I left a VM received no call back (I am not sure which business does not call back a person who is willing to pay for service). After that I got busy and got another bill with 3% finance charge , I did the entire steps again, still no call back. This continued for 6 months now and finally I contacted them via email mentioning that I want to pay my bill and not able to pay it due to no-response and obviously I would like to get by 3% waived . That's when Stacey called me and she just started going off at me , calling me non-ethical, nit willing to pay , threatening me to report to collection agency, etc etc. she was not even ready to listen. And the worst she did was put the phone off only to resume 5 mins later. She was going off that because of people like you we are going to be bankrupt ( not to mention that I am the one calling to pay the bills) , when I told her that how simple this call could have been had he been professional she was like "oh now you are criticizing me I am not here to be criticized by you" She was talking in a way that is totally unacceptable and in many companies will lead to immediate termination. She has no clue as to how to talk to customers and should be forbidden for life to have any customer interaction. SHE WAS HORRIBLE. I really wanted to hire Raggs Septic Service because the previous owners of my house used them and I like continuity. The problem is that they won't return phone calls to schedule a pump out! The person who answers the phone says that he or she (as the case may be) will send the call over to them and they will call me back the next day. I have called three times and emailed once. I am buying a pond front cottage with an existing septic system that needs to be replaced (steel tank automatic fail for title 5) I meet Derrick the pump man on site very nice guy who knew all the best !#$&* jokes that go with the job. Truck worked perfectly almost no odor and finished quickly and completely clean. Meet with Fred Fish owner and his septic designer on site on a Saturday, they showed up early and stayed late nice seasoned professionals calls returned, told me how to proceed with out getting hung out to dry by Con Com, recommended other contractors needed for this regulation rich project read more

A Ragg's Septic truck broke down in front of my house. The driver had to wait 4 hours for a service truck to come help. The man in the service truck drained many gallons toxic antifreeze all over the road with cracked pavement, less than 100 feet from my drinking water wellhead. I called their office to issue a complaint and inform them of my concern about toxic waste seeping into the ground and contaminating my drinking water. I spoke to Stacey, the person "in charge". She seemed to have no clue about the potential seriousness of this situation. After the truck was fixed and left, there was a huge puddled stain of antifreeze on the road and into my lawn. I photographed it and am now in touch with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Environmental Strike Force and the Sudbury Board of Health. I will be having to test my well water every few months indefinitely to monitor for antifreeze and it's chemical derivatives and I intend to hold Ragg entirely accountable for their sloppiness and lack of concern. read more

On a routine septic pumping, Ragg informed us that we needed a new septic tank at a cost of up to $7000. I left 3 messages for them asking for a return call for more information. After no success with the first round of phone calls, I spoke with the office manager Stacey who said that the messages were going to the president of the company. I asked her to relay the message that after 15 years of being their customer, I couldn't understand why they wouldn't return my call. The next day, a Saturday, their engineer Fred Fish came out to look at our septic who said he'd get back to us with a written estimate. We never heard from him again despite leaving multiple phone messages for him. We finally had a family friend in the business look at it who said we only needed a septic tank cover since ours was cracked. We spent less than $500 to fix the problem. At the end of all this, I counted 8 unanswered messages that I left for Ragg asking for a return call. read more

I signed into a contract with Raggs Septic for a new septic design so that I could build an addition onto my home. In order to upgrade my septic system I needed to have a septic design professional done by an engineer. I had no problem with the cost of the design being $1800.00 which included site visits, perc testing, town meeting, etc. Fred Fish came out with a crew to do a perc test and the estimate went from "a simple septic system with no mound" to my entire back yard being filled in with 4 feet of loam and the system costing approx. $50,000. At that point, I cancelled the building of the addition and told Fred that we were not planning on going through with a new septic system . I called, at least, 15 times asking for a portion of my $1800 back or my septic design drawing finished and delivered. Nobody called back, or even answered my call.
