About a month ago, I started a project in dripping Springs that will probably take three or four months. In my search for food daily I found Railroad barbecue. I can't begin to say enough great stuff about this place. The staff is so friendly. the restaurant is always clean. The food is so good. And to top that off, they have realistic pricing. The barbecue places in Austin are outrageously expensive and everything at railroad is reasonably priced and you can get in there and get dinner for two for 30 bucks. It's unreal. Walk up to order and then they call your name. Decor is kitschy with concrete floors, metal walls and ceiling and license plates from all over the US. It works well. I ordered brisket, macaroni and cheese and cole slaw. The flavor was decent, but nothing to write home about. The texture was decent. At first when we moved to DS, we had a couple of not so good food experiences from Railroad. We gave it some time and continued to try it and we definitely enjoy it now! LOVE the loaded baked potato, so good and warm fuzzy feeling! I have not been inside, but the outside is very rustic. The staff seem to always be kind and try to be quick. We shied away from Railroad for Years because of the poor reviews. We finally broke down to try them tonight - give them a chance. So we did. And regretted it. Those poor reviews were earned. The venue is pretty classic CenTex BBQ joint. Lots of sheet metal. Deer heads mounted on the wall. Counter service. Nothing unconventional about the menu-- all stuff you'd expect. It does look a little down-at-the-heels though. Paint peeling away all around the entrance door. Rough patches in the walkway. We both tried a brisket plate. And we both arrived at the conclusion that it was nothing special. No smoke ring, not much flavor. It was tender, to be sure. And they do give you very generous portions. But 'a lot' doesn't make up for mediocre. It took sauce to make it palatable, and good brisket doesn't need sauce. The potato salad, according to my companion, was somewhere below run-of-the-mill. The mac'n'cheese was no better. The green beans were probably from a can and just heated up with no effort to enhance them. It did come out quickly and was mostly warm. While the service was cordial and welcoming, the food failed them. There are a number of better BBQ places in the vicinity. read more

I have had this BBQ three times now and have tried the brisket, turkey and sausage. All had good smoky flavor, and all were moist and tender. I appreciate that nothing was spicy except the sausage, and that was milder than many. Even their sauce is flavorful without being hot. If you want heat there are bottles of Cholula on the tables. A few weeks ago we visited RR BBQ while the BBQ wasn't the best we've had we were hungry and decided to try it out. The reason I'm giving 1 star is because of the Manager and Owner. We left our stroller in the parking lot, accidentally, so obviously our fault. A nice customer brought our stroller in to them to hold. I know this because the great employee who should be the Manager told me it had been sitting in the managers office for days. Then he called me back and said it was gone. I went there and asked to speak with the Manager who wasn't mean but also wasn't nice and he told me that it's the property managment who I need to talk to but I told him his employe said the stroller was in his office. He had lied to my face. It was many calls later and many emails to the owner who never emailed me back, that the manger said he threw it in the trash. Who throws a stroller in the trash!? Do they honestly think I believe that? The Manager and the Owner aren't decent people. I wouldn't eat there again if my life depended on it. read more

Honestly disappointed, I was super hungry so I expected to have a delicious brisket or some kind of meat, and it was disappointing my brisket was cold and kind of lacked flavor, for 5$ for a 1/8 lb I would have been happier with going somewhere I had been before. This is by far the best barbecue in the area, SO much better than PP down the road. The meat is cooked well and always flavorful and fresh. The sides are fantastic. I especially like the potato salad, but everything I've tried has been great. It's family owned and run, and they obviously take pride in their service and food. I highly recommend it. Joseph was my contact for a pickup catering order for my family reunion last week and he was AMAZING to work with. He helped me plan the menu over the phone, was easy to reach and very reassuring throughout the process. He also kept me calm and made me feel confident that there would be no hitches - which was HUGE for me as I was having to plan the entire event from out of state. The food was all prepped and ready when I arrived to pick it up and he even loaded it into the car for me. It could not have gone smoother. The best part though was my whole family raving all day about the food! The brisket and the banana pudding were my personal favorites. I had a two meat combo with chicken and sausage and all 5 sides and it was excellent. The drumstick just pulled away easily. The sausage is made from pork and beef and isn't made from fresh ground meat but is ok. All the sides, green beans, mac and cheese ect tasted homemade. Price was about $27. Driving thru on my way to Houston and decided to drop in. I read the reviews first and decided to come in and make my own. Had the plate 2 meats brisket and turkey. Sides mac n cheese and potato salad. Meats were good. No sauce needed it stands alone. Generous portions too. Make and cheese pretty solid. Potato salad had relish, which I'm not really a fan of, but this one was pretty good. So as far as that , I was very pleased with my meal and had leftovers. My husband had same meats but beans and potatoe salad. He enjoyed his meal, two thumbs up! We'll be coming back. Plates were $14 each plus our drinks. Four years after my first review of Railroad BBQ, I can report I'm becoming a regular. The joint is now run by a chap named Gerald along with his attentive staff that seems to make the patrons happy with local banter and consistent cooking. The ordering process hasn't changed since inception. Counter service then waiting for your name to be called to pick up your grub. The drink station is always clean as is the condiment area that includes fresh chopped onion, sliced pickles, and jalapenos. This could be my favorite option in the place as I seem to drizzle and or rub the whole jalapenos on everything! The cole slaw is tasty along with the beans which is a first for me. Quality continues with excellent fried okra....Oh Lord, I'm reverting to my Hill Country upbringing. Favorites for me start with the Wednesday special. A brisket and sausage sandwich with two sides for $8. Tender brisket with your choice of regular or jalapeno sausage with drink included; total bargain. Another winner would be the ultra tender chicken. The rub is subtle yet amazing paired with the house made BBQ sauce. Add in the jalapeno option with me slicing and coating the bird with spicy pickling juice. Dang, I heart chicken with skin. In retrospect, I'm sure BBQ joints in Texas could rival Tex-Mex restaurants in actual numbers. The good ones don't last; but I'm quite sure Railroad has a great future in the Dripping Springs dining scene. On 12/19/2019 I stopped here and ordered a pound of pork ribs, a loaded baked potato, and a Shiner Bock. Let's talk first about the the things that they do right here. The pace was clean. The staff was friendly. The service was quick. The beer was really cold. Now for the bad part. The pork ribs were extremely tough, as if they had simply been placed in the oven for 40 minutes. Bar-b-que is slow-smoked for several hours (at least three) in order to give it a tender texture. Whoever cooked these ribs either had no idea how to cook bar-b-que, or just didn't care. Either way, these ribs were total fail. The baked potato was likewise undercooked. Residents of central Texas have no shortage of choices when it comes to really good bar-b-que. First time here and last, unfortunately. We love BBQ and took our family of four here on a Sunday afternoon. They were out of almost everything.... Chicken strips, onion rings, kid's meals were very limited, out of a lot of sides. The place was almost empty too. Bread was stale. BBQ sauce was good. High chairs were disgusting... dried on food and nastiness. Looked like they hadn't cleaned the tables or chairs well in months... maybe longer. Overall, not a good visit. Ordered ahead again for a family gathering. Everything was ready, fresh and hot at pickup time. The meats were cooked perfectly, and they stand on their own without any need for sauce, but try the sauce anyway because it's delicious! The sides are fantastic as well. I order more and more potato salad each time, and we always run out. I stop by there sometimes on the way home just to get an order of potato salad.
