They were out of a lot of basic Menu items. The server was hardly helpful or very friendly. I asked about specials for the day and they wouldn't honor what they had online.A lot of the appetizers were the same price as burgers or a dollar or two off. To me it was high. This was our first time here, and my review is mixed. So I'll start with the positive We went to see our friend play, so we were excited to come here. The parking is very limited some spots in the parking lot, more on the street around the area. The place is small, but the sound was great. Small stage, but big enough for a 5 piece band. I really enjoyed the out door patio area. Plenty of space to move around. A gas fire pit. Some spots to play games. I got to sit outside and smoke a cigar. The bathrooms were clean, but no paper towels inside. Now, to the bar. Had to wait for 15 minutes to get a drink. I asked what they had on tap, and out of 8 taps, only one had a keg. So I asked for an IPA, and they told me they only had uncle dunkle, was the only IPA. I rollED my eyes, cause that wasn't an IPA. They didn't have any mint, so I couldn't get a mojito for Maria. They could make a margarita for her. While I was waiting for my drinks, there was a lady waiting for her food, she said that she has been waiting 30 minutes. While the band was playing, I got me two more beers, cause the bartenders were pretty busy. After a while I noticed the lady come back to bar looking for her food. By this time it had been well over an hour. She was told that they gave her order to someone else. Waiting for service here was the worst. Then not having stuff to make drinks. read more

The food took another 45 mins, and was still not out, so we finally just cancelled our food order, since it still hadn't even been started yet! We basically just paid for our drinks and left. Table for 7 ,walked right in and sat immediately. Only 2 other tables taken. Waiter did an awesome job, thank you Jonathan! We ordered so much food and were not disappointed! Chorizo queso with salsa and chips,Parmesan fries-crispy and Chicken flautas. So good! Ceasar salad had crispy and fresh lettuce but was not cold. Then a bacon cheeseburger, crispy bacon cooked to perfection, not dry at all. Grilled cheese, the cheese melted well. A hickory burger, meat cooked medium and was perfect. Then a frito pie burger. Chile tasted homemade, so Delicious. Finally a classic burger. This is a must stop for some good food and great atmosphere!!! read more

This place is awful, don't do it! Service is terrible, staff is not helpful or friendly. Waited over an hour and half for our order before we left without getting it, told the "kitchen was backed up" but we saw tables being served that came in after we did. dirty tables throughout, out of order bathrooms, wet floors inside from spillage....just gross. Railyard sucks. New management is ass. They have no cheese for my Mac. They have no doctors to the pepper and no flavored wings. I literally got butter sauce in it and their lemon pepper sauce taste like straight lemon juice with pepper on it. The server was great really saved the night. read more

Love this place ! Came in today ( even though the place was extremely packed ) and had EXCELLENT service. These are the type of servers who go above and beyond and make sure you're always a happy customer . Along with that, I tried a new option on the menu which was the grilled chicken sandwich , with avocado, lettuce, tomato, and cheese on a toasted bun. It came with sweet potato fries and all for under $10.00. If you want a good meal with great service ( and maybe a couple games of ping pong) I highly recommend this place ! read more

AWESOME restaurant! If you're looking for burgers, try this place out! Railyard has kind, personable, and accommodating servers, as well as DELICIOUS buns. I ordered the Chicken Cado Sandy. The chicken was extremely fresh and the buns were soft and fluffy. I would definitely go back for the food. I have a love for sweet potato fries in general and the sweet potato fries here were just the right amount of soft and crispy. However, I tried a few of my friend's regular fries, and it was so good. I, honestly, would recommend getting the regular fries. We also tried the Fried Wickles. This was my first experience with fried pickles and I enjoyed eating it. As other places were closing after nine, we chose Railyard since it's open later and we've enjoyed decent drinks and food there for a while. We tried the $2 happy hour house margaritas (one each frozen and rocks) and were surprised at how good they were. Decided to split a veggie stack and a smoking sandy (turkey, tomato, smoked Gouda, spicy mayo). He got a salad, I got onion rings. I love the salad wasn't iceberg, and the sesame ginger vinaigrette is great! This was his first time tasting their sandy and he was pretty impressed. Both ciabatta buns were soft, and the fillings weren't skimpy. Waitress was friendly, but we've had more attentive service here in the past. read more

Went to a football game and came in after with family to eat and drink, there was about 15 people in the place but we don't judge by that. We ordered our drinks (we drink, a lot lol) and was excited to try the cucumber margarita, after everyone at our table got their drinks and our appetizers even, the waitress finally is told from the bartender that they don't have cucumbers . Ok, it would have been nice to be told that 30 min ago and not when everyone else is already ready for another round.. so ordered something else. The drinks come served in cheap extremely thin plastic cups but hey it is what it is and the world is struggling so it's no biggie just a detail, I got my horrible overly poured 2nd drink of choice (a stiff drink is a plus but not when it's so strong you can't drink it, again we are drinkers so if I'm saying it's not drinkable, it's just a bad drink). We make the most of the random bad good music and atmosphere and enjoying ourselves within our group, 3 women, a teen and my husband, you know family friendly group, eating, dancing and laughing having a good times within ourselves no problems. Then this overly drunk young girl comes in and is falling everywhere and it's noticeable maybe because the lights are on and it's empty but she's just a drunk mess all over the place. Still don't care we are to ourselves. The drunk girl comes to our table and ask if my sister in law has a problem and states that she the drunk mess is an employee there and wants to know if we have a problem!?!?. The girl puts her fist back and starts trying to initiate a fight! WTH!? We naturally are shocked and confused about what's going on and don't want to antagonize a drunk person especially when we have a teen and my niece with us so we are in shock while this drunk is standing at our table with the staff watching her tell us off and keep cocking her arm back like she is going to swing at someone. She finally stumbles away and goes to the bartender and tells him who knows what and he does NOTHING but laughs, gropes all over her and they go to the back. She comes out later with his hat on and continues to make us, the paying customers feel uncomfortable as if we did anything. We left but not before letting our waitress Mia who has a lot to learn in waitressing but she handled us well, know what happened and how disgusted, disrespected and pissed off we were, not about the drunk employee slob that was running around, but the fact that she told the bartender who was sober and he saw it all happening and he did nothing to fix the problem. He KEPT SERVING her and our service stopped. Drunk and embarrassing is one thing and hey we all been there, but the fact that the establishment let's paying customers get disrespected by his employees and allows them to pick physical fights with FAMILIES and does NOTHING. A simple apology for her or cutting her off would have been all that was needed and what was expected. Disgusted and Hope the over served employee of his at least made it home safe without hurting herself or anyone else and from what the looks of it, hope she wasn't taken advantage of last night because obviously her employer does not look out for the best interest of his customers, business or employees. Took my sister and niece for a birthday and starting college celebration. Sat outside, even though the summer heat bore down. It was not that bad with some cool air coming from inside and the shaded area, but rather sit outside during this pandemic. Our server, Ernie, was on top of his game. Much better service here that made me happy to choose for lunch than the other place we had appetizers and couple of drinks. Our table decided on 4 different burgers - Hickory Burger, Frito Pie Burger, Buffalo Chicken and the De-Railer. We crushed all the burgers and dipped the excellent french fries in all the mess of the burgers. I had to eat my Frito Pie burger with a fork and knife since it was MESSY! My niece didn't want the fried jalapeno on her burger and Ernie suggested on the side (THANKS Ernie!!). Love poppers and glad I got to enjoy and will order as an appetizer next time. The wings looked good but I did not try them. The avocado chicken sandwich was good flavor but pretty much between between the dressing and the bun it was kinda messy and smooshy. if you're just looking for some good bar food this place should it but bring your own fork because they'll just serve you with a flimsy tiny plastic one. Came here with Mrs. R because we didn't eat until late and we wanted some place that we knew would be open. I'd been on the road all day and so knew that I wanted something a bit lighter than the road food I'd been eating and so went for a house salad with a sesame ginger vinaigrette. Mrs. R and I then got a Veggie Stack and Smoking Sandy (Turkey, tomato, smoked Gouda, and spicy mayo), and each had a half of the other's. The Veggie Stack is as good as it's been in the past. The cheese, mushrooms, and avocado blend nearly *perfectly.* Likewise, the smokeyness of the Gouda blends perfectly with the turkey and the brioche buns were nice and soft. We also each got a house margarita (because they were two dollars each); I went with frozen. It was good, but not the best I've had. Finally, the salad that I ordered with my sandwich was a*ma*zing. Seriously, the sesame ginger vinaigrette was a perfect combination of flavors that I never knew I'd been lacking on a sandwich. Nicely done. read more

The mojito was really good...and I'm a mojito snob so that's saying a lot. The stuffed shrimp wraps (stuffed jalapeño) was sooooo underwhelming. It was a shrimp they put inside of a plain jalapeño half and wrapped 1/4 of a piece of bacon around and grilled. It was supposed to be "stuffed" with various ingredients but there was maybe a drop of cream cheese inside...that's it. The guac, queso, and salsa were pretty good. For example, they don't know how to make a Bourbon Smash... and it's on their menu. We met our daughter and her boyfriend here on a quiet Monday. Only two severs, so service was pretty slow. Menu is typical and includes burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads. I went with the hickory burger, esposa with turkey burger, and daughter with veggie stack. All were nicely presented, fresh, and tasty. Daughter's sweet potato fries, esposa's Parmesan fries, and my onion rings were all freshly made, crisp, and perfect. Nothing soggy or greasy. "Parm fries" are now about 15 fries with a light dusting of shredded parmesan on top; no other seasoning and not enough cheese to even taste it. "Chorizo queso" was watered down cheese so liquid it didn't really stay on the chip and 2 little-tinier-than-your-pinky-nail pieces of beef in it. And that was our second one. We sent the first back as it had no chorizo at all thinking they accidentally left it out. Nope. Disappointing. Expensive. Not the quality it had a year ago and before. Not going back. Tucked away on an inconspicuous lot on Edward Gary Street next door to Ted Breihan Electric Company across from the Farmer's Market is a real gem of a place in Railyard Bar and Grill. I hadn't been to Railyard before this past week. For a long time, I didn't even know it existed. Then, I wound up here with friends on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for lunch. Call it "Hooked On a Feeling". A good feeling. Railyard is a built-from-scratch restaurant, with ample lot and street parking nearby, so, unlike many restaurants in San Marcos which build first and think about parking later, that's not an issue here. There are three sections: indoor, patio, and blue sky outdoor. The indoor section is connected to the outdoor areas by garage doors, and usually kept open-air. The patio has overhead fans and radiant heating panels to allow more all-season use. The outdoor area features a horseshoe pit, ping-pong, picnic tables, umbrellas, and propane heaters. Flat screen TVs are available in all areas, but definitely not obnoxious. The food is basic pub grub: appetizers, soup, salads, burgers, and sandwiches ("Sandys"). Wings are available and inexpensive at $4 per dozen. Vegetarian choices are limited but available. The draw is an emphasis on their fried accompaniments: parmesan fries, sweet potato fries, fried corn on the cob, fried onion rings, and fried "wickles" (pickles). A dessert menu and kids menu also add to the total menu package. There are daily off-menu specials posted on a colorful chalkboard stand-up sign as you walk in the door. I've yet to try their full service bar. Happy hour is from 3-7 daily, with $1 off mixed drinks and appetizers, and $0.50 off beer. There is always a happy hour when the train whistle blows, which, if you know anything about San Marcos, means it's always happy hour. Service is friendly, prompt and attentive in my experience. Drinks are refilled often and to go cups are offered. Separate checks are no problem, and frequently offered unless you ask the ticket be combined. Standard gratuity doesn't kick in until a party of 8, which is nice, although the service usually merits more than standard gratuity. I've enjoyed the De-railer burger twice, which is huge and comes with lots of cheese (queso and Jack) and fried jalapenos on a sweet bun. I've also tried the Cajun Hammy, which, while it isn't reminiscent of any Cajun food I've ever tasted, is loaded with delicious ham. The onion rings are thin and cooked perfectly in my opinion; they are the perfect companion to the enormous burger if you aren't out to gorge. The fried wickles are a real treat: bread-and-butter sweet pickle slices fried to a golden brown. The paremsan fries are also very good, although I'd have to give most of the credit to the fries; the parmesan topping just doesn't add much for me. I really recommend the candied walnut fudge pie with house whipped cream; the pie is light, not too fudgy, with plenty of walnuts. In short, I can't say enough good things about Railyard. Their burgers fall just short of my favorite in San Marcos at Chimy's, but, for the same price or less, you get full service instead of self-service. I see value in that, as well as a more relaxing atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown square. read more

My wife and I went for our date night yesterday, which was the first day they were open. We had read about this place while it was being put together, and were anxious to check it out, as it was looking like a really nice facility. The short review: good food, but still has some bugs to work out. When we walked in, there was no indication of whether we should seat ourselves or wait for someone to assign us a table. We asked one of the numerous people in the area wearing Railyard T-Shirts, and were told to sit anywhere. We found a table out back, and then waited for quite a while as waitresses tended to people at nearby tables, walking by several times without saying anything to us. I eventually got up and went to the door to the kitchen, where there were a solid half-dozen staff standing around and asked if someone would please take our order. To their credit, they were pretty attentive from there on out, apparently just needing to sort out their assign-waitstaff-to-a-table process. The outdoor area is as nice as we'd expected from a drive-by we did a month earlier. Horseshoes, washers, and (glory!) ping-pong vie for your attention near a mix of patio and courtyard seating. There are some neat cedar benches, and a fair bit of attention to detail in the outdoor areas. One problem is that the lights are hung low over the horseshoe pit, and we managed to promptly break a bulb. My wife, feeling guilty, told one of the owners who happened to be nearby, and he actually gave her a little bit of a hard time about it -- kind of disappointing, given that it seemed like such an obvious design flaw, and one he admitted he'd thought about. The indoor area had a bunch of tables, a decent bar, and a nice-looking stage, sadly unoccupied the night we went. Since we were eating outside, we didn't get as good a feel for what the experience was like there, but it looked reasonably pleasant. The management apparently has plans to put in more speakers and TVs outside, which seems like it would actually detract from the feel of the place. Booking live bands is clearly planned as well, which should be a nice addition. While the printed menus didn't quite match up to what was available from the kitchen (there were actually more choices than were listed), the food was really tasty. My lovely bride enjoyed a burger, and I a chicken sandwich, and we shared chips and salsa; all were quite flavorful. (A good chicken sandwich is surprisingly hard to come by in San Marcos, so this was especially welcome in my book!) There were also a few desserts that sounded outstanding, but we were simply too stuffed to sample. Another fun touch was that happy hour prices apply whenever a train goes by on the nearby tracks, which happened a couple of times while we were sitting there. (The beer prices seem a little high to begin with to make up for this, apparently.) Overall, this place has some good promise, and I think will do well. The crowd was surprisingly robust for an opening night, and the addition of live music and the ironing out of their operations will only serve to improve the place. I'm looking forward to seeing what it becomes in another couple months! read more

Service was almost non-existent. The place was not even 1/3 occupied, and yet my peeps had already had to flag down the server to be able to order. The dirty plates and empty glasses were still covering the table when I arrived. I was seated for over 20 minutes with no service at all, so I gave up and ordered directly from the bar: shrimp po'boy with their "fried Wickles" as my side... no special requests... around $10, with tax. 20-30 minutes later, the sandwich arrived. The long wait time must've been bc they were trying to find the last 5 pieces of shrimp in San Marcos... seriously. MY SO-CALLED BLACKENED SHRIMP PO'BOY CONTAINED ONLY 5 TASTELESS SHRIMPS. Wow, crazy. There were tons of the Wickles, however. These had that crappy food/high fructose corn syrup sweetness to them, without the spicy flavors to even them out. Oh, so the server guy eventually came by, and literally only asked the 2 males at the table if they needed anything (not the 4 of us females). HE NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED ME EVEN ONCE. Lastly, the place needs a good scrub-down... built up dirt on floors, dirty restroom with non-functional toilet in at least one stall. This place has potential bc of the setup (earning the 2 stars), but they handle so many of the basics so poorly, that I'll do my best to stay away. read more
